[GUIDE][I9100G][GB] Root Samsung Galaxy S II GT-I9100G - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

--- DISCONTINUED ---
UPDATE (Please Read): This is a guide for Rooting GT-I9100G on Gingerbread (2.3.6). Please don't use it for I9100 or on any other version than GB 2.3.6. This guide was originally posted by me on 29th March 2012. So, it's bit old now and you may like to follow other updated guides and methods. Well, I've shared another guide below to help newbies. As of 2014, I've bought a new phone, the Samsung GALAXY S4, so,I'd like to discontinue this thread. Still, anyone who's confused about anything or need any kind of help can contact me or simply post here until Mods don't close this thread.
For Rooting your I9100G on any Android version, you may like to read this updated guide.
PS: Thanks everyone, especially XDA, for the support, suggestions and everything else. Love you all.
--- ORIGINAL POST ---
Hi, I'm Paras Lehana.
My friends always asked me how to root their Samsung Galaxy S II I9100G. Moreover, I'm not able to find any specified page for rooting this G variant here on XDA. So, I decided to make a thread to help anyone who wants to root their I9100G.

I'm not responsible for any damage done to your phone. There's no chance of bricking your G if you follow the steps carefully. Ask anywhere you have doubts or your heart says, "It's risky here, buddy". As known, your warranty is voided if you root your phone but it can be regained by unrooting it.
Be Cool....! It's not a tough process
The method I'm going to describe is the most common method (for other methods post below):
FLASHING ROOTED KERNEL
Advantages :
Fast method, CWM support directly assuming the rooted kernel supports it.
Applicable to almost all stock firmware even up to the latest so far.
Disadvantages :
A bit dangerous, soft bricked may or may not occurred.
Without USB jig, warranty will be voided as binary counter is increased and yellow triangle occurred. Without USB jig, only yellow triangle can be removed. Binary counter can only be reset with USB jig and only from old bootloader (KJ2 and lower)
Required Applications - Odin (File is attached)
How To:
Download one of the rooted kernel
Superatoms (version 2.1 is very stable and recommended)
MyGKernel (still stable but quite old and not updated so far)
Lucifr (currently on development and have some new features)
NOTE: Every kernel may have some other steps to follow. You can check them out in their respective threads. I'm only giving the basic and common flashing steps.
Go to Download Mode : Turn off phone. Hold vol down+home+turn on button. Release the on button after phone is turning on. After a few second, release all buttons. After that vol up.
Run Odin, connect phone with usb cable, yellow COMx will be shown in Odin
Re-partition should not be ticked (no pit file is required here)
Select PDA button, choose the downloaded kernel file (usually a .tar file)
Click Start, a PASS will be shown if succeed
RESULT: Rooted (Superuser) and CWM Recovery

Sorry to say that you are on thin ice... about warez sites where you can download apk's... Me nor xda doesn't want anything to do with those sites, like referring or mentioning (see xda rules). Paid apps must be paid for. Be fair.

Ya, since your phone is rooted you can easily crack them.
But due to XDA Forum Rules, I can't share any information regarding warez here.

[Q] GT-I9100G 2.3.6 CF-Root [Build XXLB1]

Hi
I got hold of a S2 and would like to know if there is a CF-Root option for this phone ... details of the updated phone:
Model: GT-9100G
Android:
2.3.6
Baseband:
I9100GXXKL4
Kernel:
2.6.35.7
[email protected] #2Build number:
GINGERBREAD.XXLB1
No. If you flash I9100 firmware (rom or kernel) on your I9100G you will brick it. Try this thread.

You mention your links ... but all I see there is:
GT-I9100G_DZKI1_insecure
GT-I9100G_ZCKHI4_insecure
How is this relevant to my version?
How would I know exactly what kernels are in that thread ? Have you read past the first page or searched the thread ? Thought not Have you bothered to search for yourself ? Again, I doubt it.

It's nice to blast when you have the answers ... the forum is for questions ... even in the last few pages in your thread (as this is one of the latest builds) ... people are asking the same question on the version with no answers from you ... so that is why I asked the question.
If you were looking for a version and didnt know where to find it ... Im sure you would love getting a response like this? ... And I have flashed and rooted my tablet and sgs1 ... for this specific build on the s2 I didnt see it ... so perhaps if its not the biggest amount of brain-drain for you ... please could you provide a link maybe? ... It would others find it fast too ... you do have an extensive number of posts ... and a 1st page find for a new version just helps people looking for it .... what you think?
Me provide a link after that little tanty ? Um, how about no ? Not going to happen.

I actually have been searching on the build number and have not found any answer on it. I wouldn't have asked the question if I found the answer. Previously I have found all the answers for my tablet and sgs1 here with no need to ask as I could fine relevant version to flash them and root them. If I don't need to talk to anyone about it I wouldnt ... just with so many versions of phones even the sgs1, it is a risk to get hold of the wrong versions.
Anyway .. too much tıme and effort wasted already just writing the comments on this question. Thanks for showing interest

Hi .. yes I got it sorted (but not wıth the help or direction from the guys above) ... I now have the g version rooted and flashed (althought I have the yellow triangle on boot - Im not worrıed about that, root more ımportant). If you have pre v 2.3.6 then you can root it without using odin. Odin causes the triangle. If you have not udpated to yet and are on 2.3.5 or earlier let me know as there is ways to root and get the Clockworkmod Recovery loaded without using Odin, thus not increasing the binary counter.
I also have the international version which was pre 2.3.6 so I got that rooted etc all fine this way and then flashed it (from the internal SD to ICS 4.0.3 without increasing the counter).

Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately my phone is brand new (1 day old) and I installed the latest Samsung OTA update already (stupid, I know) so I am on 2.3.6 with kernel 2.6.35.7 [email protected] #2 and build XXLB1.
I want to get an ICS ROM running ASAP but I'm only familiar with HTC phones and not Samsung root methods. I'm not sure if I can use SuperOneClick or if I have to use Odin (and which kernel to use?) ... there's a lot of info out there but it's really hard to find someone with my exact model/rev and I don't want to brick my new baby!
It sounds like I should use Odin, but could you explain what kernel you used when you rooted? Thanks very much!!
EDIT: Not sure this matters as far as which kernels I can flash, but my baseband is I9100GXXKL4.

Hi ... I had the same concerns ... 1 day old and how not to brick it ... In the end I just decided to go at it and get it sorted. I downloaded the following ROM to flash with ODIN (I9100GXWKJ2_I9100GODDKJ2_INU.zip) ... you can get it from hotfile.com (http://hotfile.com/dl/147046000/0697ece/I9100GXWKJ2_I9100GODDKJ2_INU.zip.html) ... I loaded it in Odin (phone in download mode) using the PDA option (if the zip has a password, just use the following as the password: samfirmware.com) ... completed and phone is back ... go back to download mode and get the following kernel (MyGKernelV1.1.1_CWM5 i9100G) from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1327509
Enjoy
just sharing on how we can remove the yellow triangle on boot of G s2..
>Assuming you have already rooted with any rooted kernel (ex: myGkernel/superatmos kernel)
>Run “HC-ktool”. Tap "Dump current kernel", then Tap "Reboot to Download Mode"
>When in Download Mode, start Odin, connect the phone and flash any stock Samsung kernel. Phone will reboot itself after that.
>Run “ktool” again Tap "Flash kernel from /sdcard/zImage" (zimage should be the zimage file of ur rooted kernel...copy this zImage in sdcard), then Tap "Reboot"...done
thanks for the info everyone, unfortunately i had issues with my gs2g (mp3 player skipping, gps not locking location well) and so i returned it. it's a beautiful phone but i thought it was too expensive for me to deal with any issues. now i'm hoping for the HTC one x soon! b
best wishes !

A few questions before rooting

I want to root my galaxy s2 badly but i got a few questions before i do that
1. My phone is still under warrenty, so is it good idea to root ?
2. Link me to the most stable ICS roms for galaxy s2.
3. Tutorial to root galaxy s2 running android 2.3.6 gingerbread (I.E : Running the most recent kies update).
Thank you very much
1. If you need to invoke the warranty, you un-root and reset flash counter. No problems there.
2. I use D4 rom (link in sig) - it's pretty amazing. Otherwise just search, flash, and find your favorite.
3. Flash a CF-root kernel. Read here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331784

Yes it is stable (based on CM9 - vanilla pure Android), with updates every few days or so. The dev is very responsive and quick to fix any bugs.

Thanks to you sir i have bricked my phone. The only access i have now is my damn download mode and lost access to recovery mode. What should i do now
If you can get into download mode your phone isn't bricked. How bout you take responsibility for your own actions ?
If you'd read the CFRoot thread completely & understood the bit that says (in bold red type ) "Help ! Which file do I use ?", you wouldn't be in the situation you're in.
Now, be a good lad, go back to the CFRoot thread, and read it. The whole first page. If you can manage that, you should be able to fix your phone fairly quickly.
(all this assumes you have an I9100/I9100T, of course)

Bricked 9100g ?

Hello all,
i've a strange problem with a galaxy s2 9100g
It was my mistake...i know that....i've flashed a ics cyanogenmod ICS on a 2.3.6 android with cwm.
And now I've a big problem with this phone....
I can't enter the download mode any more! 3 button trick doesn't work! I can only see a mobile phone a warning with a exclamation mark and a computer.
But the strange is that the windows pc is still detecting the phone as samsung mobile device. And ODIN shows a yellow device on com0.
Any Idea what I can do? How is it possible that ODIN detects the phone without download mode?
regards
MarcMarin

That mode you describe above where I bolded and underlined is a forced download mode, which is why Odin shows a connection. Just flash an i9100G firmware and you should be fine.

I don't have an i9100G, so I don't make a habit to read up on ROMs and how-to's for that model. I'd check the I9100G development sub-section if I were you.

ps- remember one thing do not use any rom or kernel meant for I9100 to flash on ur phone(I9100g) since u may potentially brick ur phone
also u have a seperate Q&A section meant for I9100g Here do post ur issue's there in the future

Actually, the Q&A is meant for all the i9100 models and their sub-variants. The i9100G sub-forum is meant for development only. Read the stickies in there, there's one stating that.

[Q] help needed with bricked phone

first of all sorry if this is a repeated thread, very new to this site and no offense intended. please point me in the right direction if this is the case.
phone is very unresponsive with either a battery symbol (with circle inside - frozen) or galaxy s2 load up screen with triangle. I have previously rooted the phone with a litening rom through odin v 1.85. i was running a version of ICS on it and this morning i tried to upgrade to jellybean as a forum on this site had said it was possible. firstly in clockwork mod (holding power, vol up and home button) somewhere through the process of putting the file on the phone (instructions said to carry out the process through the clockwork mod) i have made a grave error. If I was able to get the phone to be recognised by the laptop I would be able to flash another stock kernel through odin to at least get me back functional and worry about tweaking later. Currently the phone won't recognise as a drive to the laptop though. Any advice people? Perhaps a suggestion also of a location of stock kernel for australian samsung galaxy s2 (using the virgin network).
That's just a soft brick, don't worry about it .
We got plenty of threads about phone not being recognized by PCs.
Checked the pistachio thread?

Hi (newb alert)
First of all thanks for all the info - followed the pistacchio thread to regenerate phone, that worked great. however, now once the phone is going again, repeatedly getting an overvoltage error message (did not have before) and the battery dying very quickly. I also cannot access the 3G network, but wifi is fine.
Can you recommend a course of action for this, not sure if i have flashed back to a complete stock rom or not, does that mean that the phone is still rooted? I would like to flash another rom if possible, but am not asking what one to use (have seen the rules of the site Sometimes the battery is even flashing . kernel version is 3.0.15-I9100XXLPH-CL118559 and build number is IML74K.XXLPH.
Any more info needed I am happy to provide. I was really happy with the slim ICS rom and would like to stick with that in the jellybean option if possible.
thanks
Go as stock as possible before going custom again.
See if issues persists.
Make sure you flash the right ROM for your device, noticed you're on I9100 ROM and you've only stated you own an "s II" , so, I cannot recommend any specific ROM because of the variants.

If you have a galaxy s3 I9300 just flash the Siyah kernel. It will Root your device and you can make some nice adjustments in the STweaks App. Why it didn`t work with the chainfire Kernel I don`t know. What did Odin say exactly?
You could try to flash it with Odin 1.85, It`s the most common used one.

help me rooting please , and what does syiah gives me and CF auto root doesnt ?
This is not a help forum. Stop failing to search and read what you're going to do. Read and read some more.

Siyah gives you more control over the Kernel, so that you can make several adjustments (like over or underclocking of the cpu, so you have better batterylife), while CF auto Root sticks to the Stock Kernel with just Root enabled.
Did you enable USB Debugging before flashing with Odin?
Yes usb debugging is on
Status normal does not necessarily mean you're not rooted.
Try and install a root app. E.g..titanium backup...

Try Odin 1.85, I have read several cases where people had problems with Odin 3.x and it worked with 1.85

He said that Odin failed to flash CF Auto Root, so I don`t think he is rooted, if it failed to flash.
Just out of interest, which device do you have?

Are you sure you have the right file for your phone, and did you read and follow instructions of what to do if the root doesn't "take" first time (re-flash auto reboot unchecked/reboot recovery to trigger installation)?

Its not obvious that's why the question was asked . Enough numptys on here with the wrong phone who flash the wrong files as they don't bother reading .
Why don't you start at the beginning and read the basic faqs and guides instead of rushing straight to bricking your phone >>First question why do you want root ???

First you have to earn respect second respect the forum rules .
Repeat its not obvious judged by your posts and users are trying to prevent you doing something bad for your phone .That is why the questions are asked to prevent someone who judged by the post above knows nothing from bricking the phone .

Ok no one is rude here, but if you were familiar with the XDA Forum then you would know that there are many guys who ask questions like you do and some of them just flash random stuff that is not even intended for their phone and then come asking for help. You are not special and no one knows what experience you have with flashing something on your phone or if you even read the Chainfire thread.
Then second it`s CyanogenMod and not Cyangene mode
third: I already explained to you the difference between CF Auto Root and the Siyah kernel and if you want a kernel that saves battery then flash the Siyah kernel and make adjustments to your CPU/GPU, there are enough tutorials in here on how to achieve greater battery life with a kernel that supports adjustments like underclocking. There are also other Kernels like Perseus that enable high customization to the Kernel that you just don`t have with a Kernel that is fully Stock.
Also did you try all the tips that we gave you?
- Turn everything off that has to do with Kies
- Download Odin 1.85 and use it instead of Odin 3.07
- make sure you have USB Debugging on

If you want help I suggest you answer the questions I placed in this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40429120
Secondly, as already stated, nothing is obvious....if you want people like me to help you then I suggest you just answer the questions so I can eliminate potential problems
In this forum I have seen 3 cases of wrong kernel flashes in the last 48 hours alone
If you can't help me to eliminate potential problems for you then I won't bother to help, simple.......so please answer the two questions that I posted
