[Q] Seeking recommendations or advice - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am an AT&T wireless user and I am trying to decide which android phone to go with. I am a former Verizon user and was quite fond of the Motorola line of Droids... I had the Droid 2, Droid X and finally the Droid Bionic. Price is not an issue for me at the moment and I am seeing a phone that has decent battery life, a wide variety of customizability and ease of use when it comes to rooting and installing roms. Basically I am looking for a phone that can handle my desire to tweak the most out of it and yet is nearly unbrickable and has a good pool of developers working with said devices. These are the phones I am considering, please share your opinions and advice in regards to these devices.
Motorola Atrix 2
Samsung Galaxy S II
HTC Vivid
Thank you for any and all input and I hope I have posted this in the right forum.

I wouldnt go for the HTC, it seems (just from browsing through forums), that they are quite hard to mod, with their locked NAND partitions and bootloaders that must be downgraded in order to flash new roms. (correct me if im wrong someone). I would go with the s2, i have a samsung and they are seriously easy to mod, plus the s2 should have a ton of devs working with it and lots of mods/roms, concidering its popularity everywhere.

New Motoskin on Atrix

Hi all,
A question all to you!
I sell cellphones as a part time job (Fry's..meh) and when I was setting up a customers phone (Droid 3 actually) I was amazed at how fluid and nice the new UI looked. I compared it to my Atrix's motoblur/skin which obviously has its differences.
I was wondering if there was a way to get the "new" motoblur/motoskin that currently exists on Motorola devices such as the Atrix 2, Bionic, Razr, Droid 3 etc.
My Atrix is rooted and unlocked.
Any answers are welcomed.
That would require a full port of the new Motoblur framework wouldn't it? Is that even possible?

[Q] Recommend reliable Android phone ?

Hello,
could somebody recommend me a good Android phone with a decent battery and eventually a good support concerning custom ROM on xda?
I plan to buy one for my wife -she currently has a customized HTC HD2 with Android (NAND), but due to bad battery life and some reliability problems (FCs, drop of data connection, etc.) she wish for herself a "stock Android" phone. I intend to buy her this phone as a Christmas present, so it should fulfill as much as possible the baterry and reliability requirements (the requirement of good custom ROM support is just "nice to have").
Thank you very much in advance for any advice / recommendation.

google nexus one/s motorola droid lg optimus 2 samsung galaxy s
wait for the galaxy nexus, everybody seems to be. who is your phone carrier?
Google's Nexus Lineup.
One, S and Galaxy
choosing a phone....
Ive had an HD2 running NAND roms (cmylxgo,hyperdroid...) and really liked it. Touch screen went out (i ordered a new one to try and save it).
Just bought Galaxy s2 for wife and Sensation 4G for me-tmobile 14 day trial will allow me to exchange the one I like the least.
Heres the problem.
My rooted HD2 seemed FASTER internet, CLEARER video streaming, better BATTERY (Yes, I said it!) and overall better than Galaxy 2s and Sensation 4g!
**Is it possible that the rooted ROMS are that much better than the stock roms on the newer phones?
a post above also states the Amaze is probably the better choice than the Sensation anyway? True???
Ive got 9 days left!!!!!!! Am I crazy? or, once I remove all the clutter by rooting the new phones, they will crush all others???

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 VS Motorola RAZR

Hi,
I am about to get a new phone and I have a choice between Samsung Galaxy S2 or Motorola RAZR
Which one should I get? I am leaning towards the RAZR as I am currently using the Motorola Atrix 4G and very happy
I'll be happy to get any tips and advice
Thanks!
The RAZR has a locked bootloader (unless you get the developer version) and the S2 has a pretty active development community.
Should have mentioned it before: I will be getting this phone from the company I work in, from the local network operator (Orange) so I probably won't even root the device not to mention unlocking the bootloader.
Which is better out of the box? Price is not an issue obviously

What will be you main use of the fone?
Checkout each fones details and judge for yourself..
I'll be using it for everything, like my Atrix now
Communication, Calendar, Emails, Games, GPS, Camera
I compared the specs and they are almost the same.
RAZR has BT 4 VS BT 3 on SG2
SG2 has Gyro and RAZR does not
RAZR battery cannot be replace unless you take it apart and I read the battery life is not great but it does have a better screen and I do like motoblue better than touchwiz
I am really not sure which one to get which is why I asked for advice
Will be happy to get tips if anyone got a chance to use both and can give real life experience rather than a "dry" specs comparison or unboxing reviews which are quite useless...
How about the RAZR MAXX, that has a huge battery?
Also, how are they both price wise at your place?
Price is not an issue but I can only choose between the RAZR and S2. These are the 2 devices that were offered, If I could I would go for the maxx
I have a GS2 and its nice but the Razr is pretty slick in design. If you want to mod the phone go for the GS2 if you like stock go with the Razr.
Samsung SII vs Motorola Razr
I personally think both are good phones but if it was my choice I would find myself leaning more toward the Galaxy SII mainly because it is a bit easier on my eyes, nicer screen, a very active community out there and being able to access and upgrade or change the battery when ever i need were on the Razr you can’t do the same. There is no battery door on the Razr granted this allows you a bigger battery but it limits your options when it comes to system and battery troubleshooting.
I think either way generally you will be happy.... Good luck

Choosing a low budget androphone: Wildfire S, Motorola Defy or Acer Liquid Metal?

Hi everybody!
As the title implies, i'm looking for advice on low-end android devices.
EDIT:
decided to exclude the LG optimus one (3MP camera kills it for me), and the Galaxy Ace (278Mo of ram as opposed to 512mo on the Wildfire S)
But here come new challengers, as i've read marvelous comment on them:
The Motorola Defy, and the ZTE Blade S/Orange San Francisco II.
EDIT: removed the ZTE Blade S (hard to get and no support for adobe flash)
Added the Acer Liquid Metal (cheaper than i expected!)
After quite a lot of research, including here at XDA, it came down to those 3 devices, in that order:
1)Motorola Defy
2)HTC Wildfire S
3)Acer Liquid Metal
All three have:
- 512mo of ram,
- a 800+mhz CPU (well, actually, the Wildfire S has a 600mhz cpu, but it seems to be on-par with other 800mhz proc, performance-wise),
- Gingerbread
- a 5MP camera,
which are all important to me.
Oh, and i'd like the mobile to be able to turn into a wifi hotspot, i know the wildfire s does, but i guess all 3 mobiles do?
*Ideally, it should be a device i can reliably find around 200$ or less online or in brick and mortar stores.
I'm looking for the budget device that can be the (combination of) best/fastest/most stable with Root/kernels/roms/OC and the such, as this is what i'm willing to do. (plus, it's quite fun)
I'm not looking for the absolute fastest/most powerful, but rather more for the phone that benefits the most from a stable, bug-free rom.
*I already have a HTC Wildfire S, but after many, many, many tries, i didn't manage to root it.
(I'm stuck with a 0.9 HBoot that prevents me from getting the root, from what i have gathered, a problem on some HTC Wildfire S devices. Guess i'm just unlucky )
However, i guess i could find a store that could XTC Clip it for me.
(XTC clip works with ANY HTC wildfire S with a 100% success rate, right?)
Or maybe sell it, and buy another, already-rooted, one.
And it seems a rooted HTC Wildfire S could go a long way as far as getting a good device goes.
(Given the info on Cyanogenmod's site, the S can't benefit from Cyanogenmod 7 while the classical wildfire can. The other two can)
*EDIT:
after some research, regarding flash support:
- Defy and Liquid Metal both support full adoble flash
- Wildfire S supports only flashlite
Looks like the skyfire browser can help with flash support to some extent, but i must confess i really like Opera mobile.
Oh, and i'm perfectly aware that a phone around that price won't skyrocket to SII or Iphone 4 levels of performance, but that's not what i'm looking for.
Thanks a lot for your answers!

Ideally, it should be a device i can reliably find at 150$ or less online.
I'm definitely looking at the budget device that can be the (combination of) best/fastest/most stable with Root/kernels/roms/OC and the such, as this is what i'm willing to do. (plus, it's quite fun)

(I live near Ottawa, Canada, and i'm pretty new there, so if you're willing to share a good store's adress regarding XTC Clip, i'd be grateful)
Or maybe sell it, and buy another, already-rooted, one.
And, apparently, a rooted HTC Wildfire S could go a long way as far as getting a good device goes.
(Given the info on Cyanogenmod's site, the S can't benefit from Cyanogenmod 7 while the classical wildfire can? Am i right on this?)
*Samsung galaxy ace is pretty hard to get at 150$ apparently (it's more like 200$), and i like the fact that the Wildfire S comes with more ram. Maybe it's irrelevant?
*As far as the LG Optimus goes, i've read very mixed reviews. Some claim it is a best budget phone, others tell you not to buy it at all.
Would that phone really benefit from rooting as far as performance goes? Is it easy?
I've also read great things about Huawei Ideos, ZTE Blade and Acer Liquidmini, but those are fairly hard to come by used and unlocked, as compared to the 3 phones above.
I could however use some feedback on them, or others i might have missed for that matter (easy to hack? really benefit from being hacked?)
Oh, and i'm perfectly aware that a phone around that price won't skyrocket to SII or Iphone 4 levels of performance, but that's not what i'm looking for.
Thanks a lot for your answers!

Suggestion...
If you are in the silicon valley (i know its a long shot...WWW is a global phenomenon ;-) I would check out some meetups and try to find one that is giving away free device to developers that attend those meetups...I can say that I have received around 3 brand new devices and they are worked out great for development purposes... plus you will save money!
I would go with the LG if I'm not mistaken it already has a almost fully functional CM9 only camera doesn't work i think.

I'm not sure about Canada, but in the US you can find high end phones (Galaxy S2) for under $200 (with contract agreement) at authorized dealer locations such as Best Buy.
use craigslist or kijiji and get an lg optimus 2x. Good battery life, excellent camera and dual core 1ghz, plus it has HUGE rom dev and ics :-D. U can get one for around $100.
Hi guys!
Thanks a lot for the answers!
@Leo.o: a trip to Silicone valley would cost me a lot more than 150$.
@Nerot: interesting, i'll check that, even if the camera not working is kind of a big letdown.
@Towle: i'm already under contract agreement (that's how i got the HTC Wildfire S i didn't manage to root)
@Icenight89: I'll check that phone, thanks for the suggestion. Edit: checked, and the phone is more around 250$+ for an unlocked one.
Sidenote:
All in all, is it worth the trouble to root my current HTC Wildfire S?
Would it be a very good phone once rooted?
Also, is XTC Clip garantueed a 100% success rate, as i didn't manage to unlock the bootlader using the tools at HTC dev?
I apparently found a shop in Ottawa that could do it for 30$, but i don't want to waste those 30$ for it not to work.
Edit: i've also read great things about the Motorola Defy, anyone got feedback on it?
(not that i really care about the "indestructible" aspect, but if the phone can be greatly optimized and last a few years, spec-wise, the fact that it's highly resistant is a plus)
I have a Samsung galaxy gio, and my mom has the ace. They are both great phones, but i like the gio much better. Its just an awesome phone for the price. My sister has an HTC wildfire s, and i personally HATE it. It has almost no room to install apps, and i find it impossible to type on it. It doesnt seem to be able to keep up with me.
@AlwaysDroid: the galaxy Gio is really light, spec-wise, in my opinion.
But feedback is always appreciated, so thanks a lot!
Went with further research, and decided to eliminate the LG optimus one (3MP camera kills it for me), and the Samsung Galaxy Ace (278mo of Ram kills it for me, i must confess i love having 512mo of Ram).
So, now the competitors are: HTC Wildfire S, Motorola Defy+, and, the ZTE Blade S/Orange San Francisco II.
I'll edit the first post.
Eliminated the ZTE Blade S (hard to get and doesn't support flash)
Added the Acer Liquid Metal (cheaper than i expected!)
Edited the 1st post.
Still looking for advice/feedback, thanks a lot guys!
well...did u choosed anything ???

Best Manufacturer

What was that phone where you had absolutely no problems with the phone?
Bootloader was unlocked, the phone was powerful, there was timely software updates, and the manufacturer communicated well with its customers.

Galaxy S II. And, of course, the HD2, but that's a once in a lifetime thing.
Also the Nexus One.
If we're stretching beyond phones, the ASUS Transformer trumps them all.

Yeah I've heard really good things about the SG2, unfortunately this is my first smart phone. It turned me into an android enthusiast right away!
Sent from my DROID RAZR
I've only owned 4 android phones: HTC Desire Z (built quality was ****, the keyboard was loose so I sold it right away and the screen was awful), ZTE Blade (best phone for it's price, not the best hardware but for the price 99€ it was a bargain, full of custom rom's etc) Samsung Galaxy S (probably the one I was most satisfied with but also here the built quality was awful and 512mb ram is simply not enough anymore, many custom roms and great community) and now the RAZR. If the RAZR get's unlocked bootloader, it will be a beast. I like everything about it, the thickness, camera, no problems with the screen etc. Only missing is the unlocked BL and more custom roms which I suppose will follow when we can run unsigned kernels.
So to summarize it: Both SGS and ZTE Blade was the phones I was most satisfied with, but the RAZR is the best phone I have owned both built quality wise and hardware wise. Just missing the ICS and unlocked BL.
The best experience I've had has been with the Xoom. Trouble free (never had so much as a reboot and I use it daily), first up for Android updates, rock solid built quality, unprecedented port selection, and tremendous battery life.
Runner up is my old HTC Incredible, which I kept for the entire contract duration before moving on. For its time, the hardware was great, the screen was crisp (I had the original AMOLED model), and the community was strong. It had some issues with very limited app space (and its error handling system for that was impossibly vague) and the battery life was crap, but I dealt with it.
The worst experiences I've had have been with Samsungs, particularly the Charge. It's the main reason I took a pass on the Galaxy Nexus despite the appearance of being an excellent phone on paper. YMMV.
My HTC evo was arguably the best phone I have owned as far as being 100% free. Great development. Couldn't brick the thing lol.
My razr. The locked bootloader isn't that important to me. Motos build quality can't be matched. I have had Motorola phones since the OG droid and have never had a serious issue with any of them.
To date my razr is the bedt phone ive ever had , no question.

The best so far for me is Motorola with my razr maxx and the OG droid.
Next would be Acer with the acer aspire laptop i got from the a few years back and now the A500.
And lastly HTC. Not bad quality, the Sensation just feels not as ... solid.
Having had close to 30 phones in the past 11 years I can BEST MANLUFACTURER DOES NOT EXIST.

Loved my evo. Might terminate my contract so I can go back to sprint for the next evo. Looks amazing!

Having owned all the big name brands, HTC, Samsung, and Moto I have to say, regardless of the locked BL's that Moto has the best radios and build quality. Their phones also feel the most robust.
ZTE Blade was the phone with best price/performance ratio I ever owned. If it had a faster processor, I'd still be using it. Just an awesome phone.
