[Q] 9.4.2.21 update??? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I am new to the Prime forum, however, I am not new to Android Devices or XDA. I currently have an EVO 4G and an EVO 3D on Sprint and I know it is a big no, no to take an OTA with phones.
However, after doing a bit of reading on this forum, I discovered that is actually WORSE to accept the OTA on this tablet (results in hard-brick).
Now, my question is will someone be releasing a fully STOCK ROM based on the 9.4.2.21 update with nothing removed or added (except possibly SU and Busybox). I haven't seen any mention of this on the forums which is why I am asking. Excited to get the update but don't want to brick it.
Will donate big to the first person who makes a fully stock ROM with this update.....

OTA will not brick your tablet. OTA updates are fine. Unless you have unlocked the boot loader. If you are rooted still not a problem, just backup root first. And if it does hard brick and you didn't screw it up, RMA.
Apparently this forum is full of people with a little bit of knowledge and a lot of squeaky wheels.
BTW thanks for the cash incentive for a stock rom, big spender.

^What he said.
OTA updates are perfectly safe, I've done 3 already!
Just be sure to root before you update to .21 and use OTA Rootkeeper to keep root after you update
Goodluck!

Virtuous ROM is pretty much totally stock with a few tweaks here and there. Nothing major though. Also the installer that Virtuous team are using allows you to have 3 different installation experiences.
FULL: Which removes nothing whatsoever from the stock ROM
TYPICAL: Which removes a few ASUS apps that most people probably do not use or miss.
MINIMAL (I think that it what is't called): Which removes almost all ASUS apps.
You should give it a try.

So I have a transformer prime with the root can do the updating ota without any danger?

As long as your bootloader isn't unlocked and you haven't tampered with any system apps, you should be fine.

I'm new to the forum and to the transformer prime, i had it rooted but updated the firmware to 9.4.2.21 before finding out about rootkeeper, i know big mistake, now im no longer rooted. Is there or will there be a way for me to root my tablet again?
Thanks in advance

"Add space" feature missing from Android keyboard
The "add space" feature is missing from the Android keyboard. As anyone else noticed this. I actually liked the feature as it made typing faster.
Thanks,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe the easiest way is to flash a new ROM.
As Doktaphex has said you can use the Virtuous ROM.

Also I'm waiting for an exploit to root my TFP. I'm just not willing to bork my warranty by unlocking the bootloader yet.

New Firmware Upgrade! (Feb 24th)

there is a new FW update available, installig now I will report later. I'm in mexico.
UPDATE
is official version 9.4.2.15. update was without problems, GPS seems to be the same (useless in door) everything else works fine, I will continue testing.
If anyone can find me the zip file of this firmware ...
Need it since I can't OTA because it reboots before finishing the "First configuration" steps
Thank you
Here we go again...lol. I'm always one of the first on these posts..ill check now. I was running the beta .15 build. Time for the official one now
Edit: says no update available yet. Might not have hit east coast yet. Post a screenshot of your about tablet of info. Or post what version it says you on now.
No Issues So Far (fingers crossed)
Installed without issue. Lost root restored with OTA RootKeeper.
EDIT: I've seen at least one "helpful" response to my post so I wanted to clarify the I lost root doing the update BUT I restored it with OTA RootKeeper.
UPDATE: No discernible improvement in GPS. Still nonexistent since .13. Everything else seems fine.
UPDATE 02/25/12: Maybe it was the weather yesterday but this morning I picked up 11 sats in my den and locked on 4. Woohoo!
Can confirm it. USA, NY. OTA update, Build #epad-9.4.2.15-20120221

Be careful! We had a few people brick their prime after trying to flash an official Asus rom/update after unlocking. Plenty of threads on it. I would just wait til virtuous rom updates. Check out the other threads on issue. You don't want to risk bricking your device.

I wonder I'd the people who running beta .15 build will even get this update. It looks like exact same build number. So if nothing else changed then we already on latest build. Can someone who received official OTA post a screenshot to see if anything has changed? Or if someone was running the beta build post if you still received the new OTA.
Can someone post a list of the driver versions so we can see what changed? I think this is just a continuation of the random-reboot fixes, but I'd like to know if any of the wireless drivers were updated.
..so what do we do now?
Reset by clearing just data and apps, or using the "magic hole" and make a complete reset?
A link to this 15 fw would be nice when possible.
Great! just updated, looked like it is going smoother!
Just ran Quadrant benchmark to test if it goes a bit faster or slower
score is : 3834, is it me or has it gotten slower?
Got the .15 installing now in St Louis...
Only just found out this morning that, while my GPS works most of the time, and wireless works fantastically, BT doesn't see anything at all... maybe I'll get lucky and this will fix that.

Unlocked ? Your device is not an Asus device anymore!
You agreed this when unlocking your device! Didn't you read the agreement ?
You can't install any ASUS firmware update anymore: OTA, manually, or any other method you could imagine !
The only way is to have a system dump, or uncompress/extract the blob file, pick the modified files and include them in a ROM or make an update zip for unlocked devices I guess. I don't have skills for that perhaps someone will do that.
Here is my screenshot from beta .15 build I installed last night. Looks identical to screenshot of new OTA update.

is there any way to root with .21?

YES I KNOW THAT OTA ROOTKEEPER SHOULD WORK
but many people like myself had the dead android with the red exclamation mark in him and had to put .15 on the root of the sd card to get this thing to update. somehow that seems to prevent ota rootkeeper from working. it may have worked had i remembered to establish root again before updating to .21 after rolling back to .15 but i did not.
thus far i can't find a root method that will work, has anyone found a way to root on .21?
man, i can't believe how much this sucks unrooted. all the ads...boo.
The update just dropped today... chances are you're gonna have to wait for a new exploit if the old one was patched
** Sparky just posted this in Development

Thanks for the info, I looked through some of the new asus backup code and it looks like they stopped using the busybox native file (as well as the asus-backup native file). It looks like the only reason mine was still working was because the update did not remove the file, but if you never had the file (new device or after a wipe) you would not see it.
Either way, even if the file is there it is not executed so it does not perform the rooting.
---------- Post added at 06:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:56 PM ----------
If you are pre .21 then you can root using this tool (you don't have to unlock). To keep the root after the ota, u must install rootkeeper since all known root methods have been broken with the .21 update.

Yes, I'm rooted. Yes, I buy apps. No, I don't block ad sites (though I ought to for privacy concerns).
I am so lucky that I saw people had issues with root on .21 before I updated.
I quickly installed Rootkeeper and everything is safe for me.
Lucky for me I just got my Prime in the mail today. I immediately tethered it to my phone to download the updates before going to work.
Then I come sit down ready to root after a long day of work only to find this. Such a joy.

Yeah I used OTA Root keeper to backup my root too as always in the past and after the .21 update simply used OTA Root keeper to restore my root and it alaways works flawsessly.

Basically, you unlock your bootloader, flash CWM, and then flash a custom ROM with root.
That is the exact method that I used. Unlock, install CWM, nandroid, flash a custom ROM (virtuous prime is pretty good, but I prefer aokp)

It's to stop exactly what you are trying to do. If you read the big sticky in Dev Section that says "READ ME 1st" you would have seen this.
"If any mod, including myself, continue to find new threads about topics that have threads already existing or [Q] questions in the development forums!
The thread will be locked with no notice and/or up to a temp BAN!!."
Not having a go, just explaining
Not to bash the OP, but I spent many hours if not days researching how to root my prime .21, so my question to you is why should someone else post links, do the research for you?
I started with what the benefits, and negatives would be by rooting my prime. That took at least a day, then I researched the likely hood of me bricking my prime.
After I found "good cause" to root it, only then did I find a solution.....But nobody did this for me.
Let me know how it works for you to disrespect the rules up front, then ask for help to root your prime.
Back to doing the work for you....

Hey Sam,
Is there any disadvantage to unlocking and installing a custom rom vs downgrading and rooting then upgrading?
or does the voodoo rootkeeper not unlock the device so warranty still intact?

to downgrade do you need to unlock?
can you even downgrade with asus blob?
i thought it'll just tell you, you have the latest firmware and can't excute the firmware(.15) you want it to do
correct me if i'm wrong, =D
please tell me that i'm wrong as i needed to send my tab to RMA
so no more root ;-;
My understanding is you can't downgrade the firmware without unlocking. So for those of us who are on .21 who want root without unlocking it isn't currently possible. Correct me if I'm wrong.
No need to unlock
You just need to download .15 firmware and rename it as .21 and put in on sdcard
follow this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492887
One downloaded root and keep root using voodoo rootkeepr...do not unlock

Thanks for the quick reply, so If I want to unroot I can use Viper too and will i be back to stock if I wanted to return? and I saw in the viper post about recovery is that reversible if I do a firmware reset?
EDIT: just worked out you can only install CWM after unlocking so I'm not going to that stage just yet and once unlocked there is no going back so makes the recovery restore question obsolete.
No patience?? theres only one way
Whats the big deal about unlocking....
If you want your device rooted, unlock...install cwm.....flash prerooted rom....
Why so many people trying strange methods, i dont understand.
You would rather risk BRICKing your device trying to bypass the UNLOCK??
I just thinks people are odd, why not just unlock to get a root.....
or
WAIT till a root method is developed for .21....
Not everyone wants to unlock.. perfectly fine here using stock rom instead of hacked roms keep in mind if you do unlock instead of wait for a new exploit you WILL lose the ability to OTA (so then theres no need for rootkeeper obviously), so all your future updates youll have to do yourself thru CWM, not to mention your warranty

TF201, upgrade to .21 after rooting by downgrade: no update by OTA?

Hi,
I've finally been able to root my TF201 (unlocked) by the downgrading method but now I'm stuck on build v.15 and OTA says there is no update for me?
I tried to stop/clear CMclient and DM client, cold reboot..; but no way. I know that upgrading by adb will kill the rootkeeper.
Did I miss something? no OTA update for the last 24 hrs. On ASUS device tracker, my device is upgraded to .21 maybe the problem come from here.

You've obviously researched the subject. Is there some reason why downloading the .21 update from Asus support pages and unzipping it 1 level to place the extracted zip file in the root of a micro SD card and rebooting won't update?
Hi,
It will update but the rooting will be lost. Even with Root keeper. (well, I did not try the SD card way)
If your unlocked you should not get official ota updates.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2
This is what I understand. Will root be lost even if I update by the zip on /sdcard?
I may give a try to CM9...
If you are unlocked you will not loose root when you flash a zip (CM9) through recovery to a new ROM.

so i thought that i could upgrade from .15 to .21 after unlocking my device, but found out that it was impossible. correct me please if i'm wrong...
i had no choice but to just leave it like that (.15) then install AOKP..
Are there any downside of being stock in .15? or is it still possible to do OTA update in a very safe possible way in the future?
Thanks....
If you downgraded to .15 make sure that you put the right blob on your prime so that you will be able to get the ota back to .21. If you use the wrong blob file than you will not get the ota.

skarfreak: you can upgrade manually to .21 but root will be lost.
I'm back to stock .15 rooted. I tried CM9 but so far not totally stable (crash of desktop?, drop wifi in standby...., no isp mode, not mouting sd card or usb stick etc..) . Hoping some progress both from CM9 and root for stock.

havent you tried AOKP? i think i'll stick to AOKP atm, improves my tab a lot, can play GAMELOT games now.. quick boot.., but i think theres a little wifi issue.. anyway, there will be greater tweaks in the near future..
To emphasise - if you unlocked (as in bootloader unlocked) then you must never attempt to install the official ASUS firmware (either by OTA or other means). If you try, you will brick your prime.
Once unlocked, updates need to be by community ROMs only.
Please be specific about the distinction between rooted and unlocked, and be careful when giving advice that might brick someone's device unless you are sure you understand the advice you are giving.

My question is, is if i have to re root, then what is the easiest way to root with 4.1.1? thanks in advance
anyone?
Me too. I was rooted and had Voodoo installed but after 4.1 I lost it all. Not even partial.
Currently no way to root once on JB, not without unlocking; which voids your warrantee. Can't downgrade back to ICS either to root.

Unfortunately there is no way so far to root JB. (I know. Is this the future of Android? No root? No unlocked bootloaders? That is a discussion for another day.)
But... If you were rooted before and used Voodoo Root Keeper, there may still be hope. Check out this thread. As I have posted before, try and follow the conversation between thenrz and myself starting here and see if this helps.
Hopefully you have a copy of the su binary lurking on your Prime. With that you can, with luck, restore root. Read the conversation a few times to get the jest. I'm sure most of you are smart enough to read between the lines to get it figured out.
