Hey, running into a bit of an issue with my s2. I am running CM7.1, and it has only started fairly recently. Does not matter if I'm using the phone, it's sleeping (although less common) or even when it's booting, sometimes it'll just completely shut down, as if you just ripped the battery out of it. No warnings, anything. Sometimes after this happens, getting it to turn on again is tricky. Sometimes it'll let you press the power button, sometimes you have to remove the battery, and sometimes you even have to connect it to the charger.
I'm really not sure if this is a software or hardware issue. The fact it sometimes has problems restarting afterwards kind of points to hardware. Maybe my battery is dead and the protection circuitry is kicking in?
Anyone else have this issue/any ideas?
Cheers,
Dan
Try going back to stock firmware & see if you can reproduce the problem.
how long do u have ur phone? and are u using stock battery?
i would try another battery at first
otherwise like said before go back to stock or reflash cm7 with full wipe

Just rooted, overclocked, now when i power off it simply turns on 2 sec after.
How come? Anyone know?
Reflash your kernel, see if it continues.

Just did with odin and tried to power off again, it turns on.
Any other ideas?
Pulled my battery to shut it off.
Started the phone, shut it off, and it stayed off. Weird!
Thanks for your help.
its not off, it's underclocked so low it can't even wake up the screen, higher your min clock speed to 600 and see if it still happens, of try removing setcpu or that other one that starts with a T.. whichever you use

I have the same problem, instead of switching off it just reboots, even if I power off from recovery.
What kernel are you using. I'm using Ninphetamine 2.0.5, with VillainROM 2.4.2, with Black Android Theme.
I'd rather not pull the battery, after seeing how flimsy the battery cover when I put it on first, I decided I'd try to avoid fiddling with it if at all possible

I was a bit shocked by the battery cover when I first got it, but look how wrong we were...

Well let me tell you about a little secret: if you hold the power button for 10 seconds the phone will shutdown instantly no matter what.
I have the same problem too, it's very frustrating...

Doesn't work: it turns off, stays off for 2 seconds en boots up again.
I got same problem. Never flashed, never rooted. Got original 2.3.3.
I think I#ll try to flash it to fix it.
got a similar problem. probably not related. after unplugging it from a full charge, the phone kept making the "USB connected" sound. when turned off, it would do one of two things: display the big battery charging indicator while flashing the overheat indicator or turn itself back on.
while powered on, the battery icon will change from charging to not charging. I checked the USB socket and doesn't seem to be malfunctioning and there isn't anything shorting out the contacts. so far now, the battery level is at 87 percent after 48 minutes not in use. and now it's not making the sound anymore. I suppose the battery is malfunctioning.

I got a mixed-up thing of the issues on this topic..
When I take off the power socket, the symbol that shows "charging" remains there, and also, it is completely impossible to turn off the phone..
Whenever I turn it off, hard, or standard mode, it turns on again after 2 seconds..
And even if I remove the battery, I put it on again, and then it's back on in 3 sec....
Uh, and when I plug the charger in, when the battery is completely discharged, I have to take it out and back in , several times, before anything appears on screen, and even when it does, there is a temperature warning sign , and a yellow one which usually appear...
I'm getting very frustrated since I just paid 5000 nok (920 USD) for this phone..
And while I really begun to like Android, I guess I'll have to switch back to iPhone with a 4S, or to some better android device, since yes, the gs2 is cool , but I can't stand such issues, since I do run business things, and the phone is of vital importance for me, and not just a console/browsing crap.
Has anyone got any solution on this issue?
It would be crap if I had to send it to service, since it would take a lot of time, and I would have then to buy another temporary phone in the meanwhile...
PLEASE, HELP!
I had this problem, i cleaned the USB port out but that didn't stop it, but i think it helped. I then drained the battery to nothing and it has now stoppped. It's a battery problem, as it didn't switch off like it does when it hits low battery it just died. The battery readings were also inacurrate and every now and then it would do a weird thing like flashing it was charging, but it wasn't. I tried software etc.. and clean wipe before i tried the hardware, so it wasn't the rom i was running. I think the battery is on it's way out, so I've bought a new one.

Did this actually help? I had all the symptoms everyone has been describing and sent it to Samsung for repair. Their response was that the phone was stuck trying to download a PRL update, but as soon as I got the phone back from them and charged my battery to 100%, removing the phone from the charger caused everything to start again. I'm not entirely sure it is the battery, but have no other ideas.
USB charging port is dead.
Buy a new one on ebay and replace it.

Hi all.
Had similar problems about one month after getting my s2. I have unlocked sim card, rooted it and flashed some kernel, shyah i think. And left it with stock rom (Android 4.0). As it was under warranty i reverted completely to stock and took it to the carrier. After one day got it back but they said it had no problem. The fact is that i could in fact turn it off again. After a few days it was back so i flashed a custom rom (resurrection remix at that time) and never had it again.
Now I'm with alliancerom and apolo kernel for a few months and never had it again.
Hey,
Every now and then, my hero just crashes, like the power would've been plugged. When I turn it on again instantly afterwards, it won't even boot if I don't let it charge. When I charge it, battery level says 0%, which seems kind of strange since it's mostly a lot higher before the crash.
If I do a reboot, the battery level suddenly seems to be where it should be.
I'm running Elelinux-7.1.0-RC1-Hero-v3.5 with radio 63.18.55.06JU_6.35.09.26.
I tried another rom, another radio Problem persists. So I guess that means it's a hardware issue? Is there a way I can be 100% sure?
Another issue is that after a few weeks of using the same radio, the sound when calling gets distorted. Reflashing the radio seems to fix this. Is there a permanent solution for this?
I had a similar issue and it turns out my charging cable was a bit broken. I think it was charging but really really really slowly. It confused my Hero a bit.
So try using a different cable (if you have one) and see if that makes a difference.
Well, it doesn't happen while charging. That's when it does NOT happen. It happes while using it on battery.
Anyway, I charge with different cables depending where I am, in my car, office, home...
Hello all, i have searched the forum for the past weeks now for a solution of the SOD (sleep of death), all i can find is new problems but no actual solution. But i think my GS2 is having more than just a sleep of death. It just doesnt tolerate my screen going of. From what i could find, most people have SOD when their device go into DEEP SLEEP. With mine, anything that causes the screen to go dark (e.g power saving during a call) crashes the phone. And it doesnt end at that, Getting the phone to reboot might take me up to 2hrs!!!! when i remove the battery and turn on the phone, its goes directly to CWM and selecting reboot, the screen stays dark and i have to repeat the process all over again till i get lucky (after about 2 hrs) for the phone to reboot (From CWM). Yes, i clear cache.
when the battery is below 30% the phone isnt such a diva, it still have this screen off pain in the a** thing, but rebooting isnt such a pain as when it goes dark and i have to reboot when the battery is at about 80-100%
-Am running CM9 along with the kernel it came with
-flashed different roms but all came with the same problem
-even unrooted and went back to original rom, but still had the same problem
-The phone was once repaired from water damaage. Including a battery change
-Since i started running CM9, while charging the phone, it doesnt get insanely HOT as when it was running original rom or any custom rom
-Downloaded wake lock to keep my phone always on, 24/7 so i kinda feel sorry for the phone as it is always on... and i miss my lock screen
please all u android gurus, help me out with this problem. I totally love this phone and its my first android.
All I can suggest is flash stock ROM, get rid of triangle on boot if you have it and go to service center.

Well thx for the reply. As I mentioned, the phone had water damage before so the warranty is void as they can link any single fault to the water damage. I Also found a spartanian way to solve my problem. I play music on the background and take out the volume. So now my music is on an infinite loop!!! Now I can put my phone to sleep and the battery last way longer than leaving the screen on all the time.
But still, any other suggestions are welcomed.

I have exactly the same problem as you.
I replaced usb port and battery, but still the problem.
For me it works better when the battery is low, than i'm able to send phone in to sleep and wake it up again, but while charging of with the 2000mAh Samsung batterie, the phone freezes in standby and i often can't get it running for a while. I also had your problem, that the phone boots into cwm sometimes.
Could you find a Solution? I also have no warranty and don't want to buy a new mainboard, it's to expensive.

If water damage happened recently (in the past month) I think your problem is water damage, because i think that when you took the phone on repair, they missed some spot cleaning the liquid on the board/under IC's (in the BGA), and now it started messing the circuitry. It has nothing to do with software, but there is one last thing you could try - JTAG... And i work in a service for repairing mobile phones .
Sorry if my English is bad.
Whenever a device goes to cwm upon reboot, software is misbehaving.
Keep on stock, plain stock.
If you like, you can use a nuke script to clean the device for custom ROMs leftovers.

Secuence of events that happened BEFORE the problem started:
1-Had a working rom of CM7.2
2-Battery was going out too quickly (7 hours or so) therefore I tried wiping battery data
3-Charged the phone
4- Unplugged it, took a picture
Problem:
One hour later I realised it was turned off...
I turned it on again, it turned off soon afterwards
for a moment it had a problem turning on (it wouldn't go past the cm logo)
afterwards it was even worse; it turned off before even passing the first logo, I couldn't even get it to recovery mode.
Solution Attempt no.1
Tried to get it to stock rom with Odin.
I was able too... but the problem persisted in the new Rom.
Solution Attempt no.2
Tried to get another rom
My situation NOW
I'm back on stock Rom. If I leave my phone alone for like an hour or so it works for 20/30 secs before turning off... After that the problem gets worse till I cannot boot.
Any ideas guys?
How old is the battery? There are apps on playstore to check your battery, thats where I would start. It doesn't sound like a Rom problem, sounds like hardware.ie battery first. Gluck.

Can't have the phone on for 1 minute, forget about downloading and using an app from the store...
I don't know if it's a hardware problem since it happen really suddenly...and just the day after I resetted the battery stats ..... Maybe it is a hardware issue but I want to be sure I tested everything first
Hey, maybe you moved on but I was having the same issue on every ROM.. stock or not. being the detective I am I investigated and inspected.
One of my battery connecting pins is loose even though it's pressed tightly in the case any moderate amount of force or impact loosens it from the contacts.
My temp solution for you would be to add something to the back cover to apply enough pressure to keep the battery still or resolder the copper connectors. The first being easier.
Hit thanks if that helps.
Invest in a new battery. Simple solution.

Recently I notice my I717 is shutting down randomly, and experiencing battery issues. For example I can be running any app or browsing the web or whatever and the phone fully shut down without notice. In the past I recalled the phone least prompting me with a message a saying phone powering off. It also take 2-3 tries of holding power button phone vibrate before come back on. when I finally get phone to power on it say 15% battery life. This where it get strange, reboot phone again, and it now say 87% charge. WTF is what I'm thinking, it jump 72% battery life after reboot. Also its not my ROM cause I try 3 different 4.2.2 custom roms, and went back to an 4.0.4 custom rom. Still same problem, any insight would be helpful thanks in advance.
I think I may have gave her Whiplash the way I pulled my Big Black.........GALAXY NOTE out!
Signature is uncalled for ........but maybe try wiping your phone completely ...internal and android secure ....and do a CLEAN install

Battery dead.
Remove your battery and check if it´s deformed, like thicker than the original battery.
Replace it and your good. You don't need to waste your time on clean install etc.
I have had same problem in two differet phones. In both occasions the reason was dead battery.
