Have you tried the native file explorer? I always find external storage there.

I am having an issue with files not showing up on my PC, that are in root explorer. I search the directory on my PC and and it doesn't come up.
By default, GS2 connects in MTP mode which only shows/transfers media files (videos and pictures). You will need to connect as Mass Storage mode in order to show everything. Go to Settings->Wireless and networking->USB->Enabled USB Mass Storage before you connect the USB. Then you connec the USB and hit the button screen to enable the storage. This way, the phone storage will show up as a external drive.

Thanks I was able to view the files on the PC, I just can't see all the files. I am trying to access the directory. data/data/com.com.2us.HB3D to replace a comlib.dat file. I see this directory in root explorer, but on the PC I can only see /data/datacom.com.2us.HB3D and not any other files.

maybe I'm wrong but I didnt think you can see all your files on sdcard due to security reasons. Only files that are in the "sdcard" folder, or whatever its named now

Figured it out just now, a while ago when clicking SD card in root explorer, it would come up with "SD card not mounted". So what fox told me earlier did work! I transferred the file I needed to "USB Storage", then went to "SD Card" in root explorer and pasted the file over.
i guess i was wrong. glad to see you got it working, though.
My PC running windows7 mounts the Transformer Prime just fine and I can access its internal storage without Issue.
At work, we are forced to use Macs running OSX lion 10.72, however my Prime does not mount on the Mac's for some reason, and I cannot see the internal storage on the Mac's.
Did anyone else try mounting the TP internal storage on a Mac running 10.72?
Does it work for you? Does the prime use a standard EXT3 or NTFS partition?
Is it formatted in such a way that Mac's don't recognize or is something wrong?
The mac can however be accessed wirelessly by enabling SMB file sharing for windows.
File Manager HD now see's the mac just the same. I just can't seem to mount the TP storage with a physical connection to a MAC over usb... hmm
You need Android File Transfer installed on your Mac.

Thanks! - I will check this one out for sure-
so far, I have been using WiFi File Explorer pro v1.5x to transfer files wirelessly via HTTP and port 8000- and it has worked great...
I am planning to use wireless for most of my file transfers from PC's to the tablet, but I still mentally needed to know it works via USB hardwired.
Thanks for the tips!

Still want to mount as drive...
I like the File Transfer Manager on OSX, but I'd still like to mount it as a drive so I can create image backups of the internal storage without buying another 32 GB SD card...
Thoughts?

you can't mount it as a drive as it uses MTP not USB mass storage
if i recall the the way ICS works is the internal storage is mounted as MTP however external storage such as microsd is mounted via USB Mass Storage...thats the reason that the GNex has no usb mass storage support and only mtp, since the gnex has no external memory slot.

Ah. Not familiar with MTP. I just got this thing. Android file transfer doesn't always stay connected. It freezes on me on my Mac sometimes. When I try to start over and just rewrite over files I copied, it will give me **** about not being able to copy a file and drop off. Doesn't seem reliable. Could be the tablet though.
MTP can only transfer one file at a time which is why many people don't like it, to only advantage it has is that it transfers files faster but I would much rather have the ability to transfer more than transfer slightly faster

I'm not sure this is possible, but could you use an FTP client to send files to the tablet like FileZilla? Would that be faster / more reliable on a local network connection?

It's possible. You would need to install an FTP server on your tablet. There appear to be a number available on the market.
Hi everyone,
I attached my Xperia Tablet S to my PC using the USB Cable but cannot see the SD Card in the directory.
I think it should be called 'sdcard2' but it is not there! I wanted, using the PC, to transfer some files between the internal storage and the external SD card.
Off to search more about this but any advice appreciated!!
Ofiaich
Won't show i'm afraid.
Alternatives would be an SDCard reader, or transfer the files to your tablet, then using the file transfer app, move them over to the SDcard.
Hi SWFlyerUK,
thanks for your reply!
I understand those options but what I had hoped to do was to have two windows open on my PC, one with the Xperia Tablets internal memory, and one with the SD Cards content. I could then drag multiple files from one window to the other!
I use an Android App file manager as well as Astro File Manager and use those to copy and paste.
Thanks again,
Ofiaich

That sony 'File Transfer' app on the xperia tablet s sucks. There needs to be a direct way from the computer via a usb cable to access the external sdcard (sdcard2). Is this a dead end? Is anyone working on this? Maybe JellyBean will enable this? My Samsung can do it so I cant give up.
Hey, if writing out to the sdcard2 can be solved then I'm sure this can be as well. Sony told me that it was impossible to write to the sdcard2 by any means other than the 'File Transfer' app and that was definitely wrong. So maybe not ever seeing the sdcard2 from the pc via a usb cable is wrong as well.

Really? when you say 'everything', could you elaborate please?
1- can you write to external sdcard2 from any type of app on the tablet, rooted or not?
2- can you see and read/write/transfer files to/from the external sdcard2 from a pc via usb cable, rooted or not?
Those two things would be huge to me......any corroboration from others on this? Thanks

You can write media files to sdcard2
1- some apps are blocked to write to sdcsard2
2-from pc i can write to/from the external sdcard2
but when you use this option
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050126
the tablet has rooted and firmware 6b
OK, sorry if my terminology is incorrect but you should get the gist of what I'm asking.
Let's get this out of the way though, because of how I use my N9 I absolutely *CANNOT* root it, too many apps that I use daily will not work on a rooted device!
OK, so what I want to know is what is the best file browser for USB OTG support and is there a way that a USB OTG drive can be auto-mounted so that applications, e.g. VPlayer, Comic Rack, can see it as a drive and read the contents?
I have tried Antek Explorer Ex and File Commander and they don't appear to see the USB drive. ES File Explorer can see the drive but I'm not a big fan of the interface.
I know there is Nexus Media Importer but is that a "normal" file explorer too? Will it also automount the drive into something readable by other app? (I don't mind paying for apps if they do what I want)
Thanks
not rooted. most apps won't end up showing whats on the drive. Stock android doesn't mount drives (trust me I wish they did - similar to how samsung does) not sure if you need root for Nexus Media Importer but that would be your other option
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.homeysoft.nexususb.importer&hl=en
I think StickMount can manually mount HDDs and flash drives for other apps to see without root.
The automount option requires root privileges though.
ES file Explorer works well. They updated it for lollipop sometime last week!
file expert also works well...
Thanks for all the advice.
Stick mount doesn't work on a non-rooted tablet, it FC's
I've settled on using ES File Explorer for the moment,

How did that work? I've been trying to get ES File Explorer to recognize my Meenova for the whole day. I have a 64GB FAT32 microSDXC plugged in through Meenova. ES recognizes that something is plugged in, it just freezes when trying to open it. The only app successfully opening it up it Nexus Media Importer.

Never heard of a Meenova before but it looks nice, I've only used a thumb drive with 64gb sdcard plugged in via a USB OTG cable and that has worked fine.
Hi!
I just got a USB stick with both a microUSB and type A connector that work flawless with my Nexus 9.
But I find it unpleasant to save files unencrypted on it from my Nexus 9, imagine that I drop it somewhere or whatever.
I've tried some apps that I don't remember the name of that should encrypt the storage or separate files but these seems only be able to encrypt files in the Nexus 9 internal memory.
It don't have to be compatible with a computer(Linux), but it would be nice if I also was able to decrypt the stored files on another Android device even though it's not a showstopper if that doesn't work.
Note that my devices isn't rooted due to security reasons, so if you know any solution for a non rooted device I will be very greatful.
Thanks for your time!
Was curious about this from your post!
11. Create an encrypted files with password protection
If you have sensitive data in your android, that you don’t want other to see, For instance a private video or images. then the best approach is to encrypt it, with password protecting. right ?
Well look no further, because using ES file manager you can encrypt any files, with password protection. And once you that the content will automatically be hidden from your gallery as well.

Edit note: Needs a rooted Nexus 9 and the Stickmount App.
Can encrypt files on usb stick, they need to be encrypted and then decrypted to view.
Don't forget to encrypted them again after viewing or editing.
Don't know about viewing them on another PC, but i guess if you have ES File Manager on another android device it should be able to decrypt them as well.

Hi,
I'm sorry to tell you that I'm only able to encrypt files with ES File Explorer on the "internal SD-card". I'm not able to do that on the USB stick.

It worked for me on a rooted device. Is your device rooted?
Also use the app stickmount to mount the usb stick!
Edit: Tested again and If you use ES File Explorer to mount the stick, you can not encrypt/decrypt files on OTG.
The stickmount app mounts external usb to an internal path
Also installed ES File Explorer on my not rooted xperia z1, and was also able to encrypt a file. + Decrypt it again on the Nexus 9.

Hi,
No my device is intentionally not rooted due to security reasons. Will update OP that this request is for non rooted devices.
Has there been a solution on this topic?
