Hey guys. I finally traded up from an OG droid to a Galaxy S2 and can't seem to find an updated rooting tutorial. All of them have dead links or don't seem to work. I hope I don't get flamed for this but can someone please send me in the right direction? Thank you.

1st step: make sure what model Galaxy S2 you have (label under battery) as there are over a dozen different model phones called Galaxy S2. OG "Droid" is on Verizon, and Verizon doesn't carry ANY Galaxy S2 model. If you were on Verizon previously, that means you are in the US. If so, and you got a Galaxy S2 through a US carrier (ATT, Sprint, T-Mobile), I guarantee it is NOT the GT-I9100, which is the device this forum is for.
my phone is a gt-i9100. I live in alaska. I purchased it through a local phone company called GCI. I just feel overwhelmed with all the galaxy products out there. A little over saturated, but definitely a good phone. I just wanna root it like I did my Xoom and OG droid.

I had to ask. I'm in the US using a GT-I9100 as well, but the majority of US Galaxy S2 users are NOT on the GT-I9100.
You can root using a CF-Root kernel. Works perfectly fine, and installs CWM recovery for you as well. Just make sure to follow the instructions exactly.
Hey thanks. Honestly I like this phone so much I didn't really wanna root it, but my carrier will probably never officially support the ICS update and I miss having nandroid backups and tinkering around to get the most out of my phone. Thanks for the link.

I gotcha. Sorry for not searching as much as I could have. I have an issue, however. My kernel is 2.6.35.7-I9100XXKI3-CL577579 and the tutorial mentions KG1. Also, there's about a million files posted throughout the thread and I have no idea which is supposed to be for my device. I'm sorry if I'm asking for a handout. I just wish rooting was simpler like on my old phone. I'm sorry, and thanks again/

There's a "Help! Which file do I use ?" section in that thread. Sounds like you read that, since you mention the tutorial that mentions KG1. So you should be able to figure out which one to use based on that. I bolded the important part of your kernel version.

*sigh*... rule #1 again. This is a question that's been answered literally more times than I have posts. There are many ways.
EDIT: of course, if you flash an ICS ROM, chances are good you will have the triangle again, in which case, there is no point in getting rid of the triangle now.

Ha ha. Funny indeed. I know I had better start following the rules, and the yellow triangle isnt exactly a concern. This thread should probably be deleted due to my ignorance. For what it's worth, I'm extremely grateful for the help I've received. Lastly, anyone here on ICS or have a personal preference on what build to download? I'm kinda worried because I love EOS ICS on my xoom but gingerbread is so well optimized and I'm sure some apps won't work once I make the upgrade. So many more apps are compatible on my phone and I'm weighing out the risks.

Is rogue recovery compatible with the SGS2 or is there a way to configure CWM recovery to write a backup to the external card? Everything else is pretty much within my grasp. Alright everyone. I'll be more respectful of the rules and give thanks when its due but I have a dilemma because Ice sandwich doesn't give access to apn settings like previous incarnations and I feel really lost and worried that I'll mess my mobile internet up if I'm not careful.I also tried to research about making a nandroid backup straight to my external card without results. if this is the wrong place to ask can someone guide me in the right direction? You're saying you can't edit APNs on an ICS ROM? That's weird. The guy in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1554967) sure sounds like he could edit APNs on an ICS ROM.
No. Thats not what I meant. Ive only ever edited the apn of my old phone with apn backup and restore. Apps don't have access to apn settings in 3.0 and up from the research I've tried to do. I didn't know how else to edit them. My xoom is wifi and my og Droid never made it past gingerbread so this was never an issue in the past. What do you do when you update? Write everything down and key it in after the upgrade? I have no problem doing so. I was just asking if theres an easier option. My only other issue is figuring out how to make a nandroid backup straight to my external SD card. EDIT to add: I should say - what I linked above is ONLY relevant because I used him as an example of someone who was indicating it was possible to edit an APN on an ICS ROM. Which seems to contradict, and yet NOT contradict, what you were saying. See my confusion?

There are several apps in the play store that back up and restore APN settings. But you probably won't need them. If you do a reset to default in APN settings, it should query your carrier for their APN settings, and just work.

I can access my external sd with CWM just fine. You have to mount it first though.

I still possible to make SGS2 unlock the phone as soon as i enter the right pin code on lock screen, without having to press the OK button down the bottom?
Doubt it, asthe ability to lock the sim card be too great. Example: you make a mistake on the last digit. 2 attempts left. You have taken a couple of beers. Ops. Sim Locked

I've been customizing my phone every day for who knows how long, little by little to get it just how i like it, and this 'OK' button is annoying. VERY annoying. Though, I need a PIN on my phone, and 99.99%of the apps on the market have horrible horrible designs. No offence, but I'd rather stay with the android look. All of the thread's I've found have either told someone to use a third-party app, or use CM10. Well, someone who has almost all of their information on their phone can't afford to install this, seeing as it wipes your entire phone, and for a PIN, that's unnecessary. I don't know what roms are, same with roms. I like the way the touchwiz UI looks on my E4GT(I have fk09 leak installed, recently got this phone, and barely had anything on it). I like the way JB looks with touchwiz way more than it did on ICS(looked horrid).
TL;DR
If someone can find a fix to this, without any third party launchers, or horrible-looking apps, that would be great. If you give a rom, explain how to install it. Thanks in advance.
The rom SlimBean has this feature which I use. It can be found in the lock screen settings.

Thanks for an answer, but AFAIK, FK09 has no recovery mod, which i didn't realize, and unless someone kniws of one that supports the build,pr whatever, I can't load any mods.. Also, links to specefic topics help a lot..
And you're unable to go to the Development section & look for the Slim Bean thread like everyone else here why exactly ? (using the XDA app on your phone & being too lazy don't count as valid answers).
Re: whatever you're running now that has no recovery, looks like you're going to have to flash something else; another rom that has CWRecovery or at the very least temporary CWRecovery (which will disappear after you reboot) if you want to flash Slim. I don't believe there's an Odin version.

No, I'm not being lazy, I simply dont know where to look. Not sure if you could tell, t I'm new here, and I'm not used to this. Did you expect me to just know where EVERYTHING is? I found this thread after wasting my entire evening looking for a solution, and found this thread. I signed up specefically for this purpose. I was trying to ask for a link without looking too unappreciative, but rhatbobvoliously didn't help. And I don't use an xda app, nor do I intend to.

My point was (is) I don't have a link. If I want to get you a link, I'd go to Development (by navigating the site; not exactly a new fandangled web thingy) & find the thread, come back here & post the link. You're perfectly capable of doing this yourself, yet you expect me to that ?
That speaks volumes about the people who seem to visit here these days. They want everything served up to them on a silver platter with a minimum or no effort on their own part.
Also, from his first post in this thread, he's an Epic 4g Touch user. Any ROM suggestions he gets here are likely to be i9100 ROMs.

I don't inderatand how it takes any more explaination that I DON'T KNOW where to look. Get around looking like a smart allic, and actually take the time to help people around. What are you, 14? Aren't they both Galaxy SII's? I would think they did the same, and these roms run the same.. Does that mean that there are no rom for the epic 4g touch? If not, is there a way around this without rom?

Clearly you don't know you're in the wrong place anyways.
Yes, they are both Galaxy SII's. They are different, however, since yours (Epic 4g Touch) is a phone designed to work on Sprint's CDMA network. That phone has a separate forum. There are plenty of ROMs for that device in its forum.
The device this forum is for (GT-I9100) is a GSM phone that won't even work on Sprint's network. So no, ROMs for this phone won't work on your phone.

1) can someone PLEASE give me Step-By-Step guide on rooting/unlocking my device?
2) what is the VERY 1st thing i should do with my phone before rooting?
--also i dont have any MicroSD--i dont use tons of App or anything so is there a problem me not having MicroSD?
--also i am Wi-Fi cover 100%, 99.99% of the times and NOT wanting to use ATT Data
once rooted--will my Internet work (must hav for myself).

Internet will work fine after rooting.
If you just got the phone, I would seriously recommend taking about 2 weeks to read up and figure out what you are doing. Everything is fairly simple once you know the terms and common lingo. Don't jump in and come out with a nice paper weight.

I suppose my previous post was less than helpful. 'pologies.
1) There is a thread that will give you step by step instructions for rooting your phone. "Zedomax" has videos available as well. Check out galaxys2root.com under the AT&T section. Yoderk's post will prove helpful, should you read it.
2) The first thing you should do is turn the phone on Kidding. Backup your apps and data, just in case. Backing things up is usually a good first option no matter what you're doing with your phone.
-- No MicroSD card, no problem. Your phone has a few gigs of memory built into it. Just buy one if you need more storage space on your phone.
-- Internet will work just fine if you root successfully. Same goes for Wifi.
3) The best ROM is the one you like the most. Try them out and see for yourself.
4) I'm not sure what you're asking with this one.

I wouldn't recommend using that method, I would flash entropy's stock package that includes root and cwm via odin.

I would suggest using it stock for a week, see if it does everything you need it to.
If it does, then just run stock.
That way there's no risk.
If you do decide to flash then like everyone else is saying, read and reread. Spend some time, several days just reading because there might be some little bit of information that you might miss, but is critical to a successful flash.

Well you can get the free version but I highly recommend getting the pay version as it saves time hand over foot as it will bulk install all of your apps. As far as apps, maybe sms if you need them that's all I do. Just a word of advise with TB never restore system apps to a different rom, it'll give you a headache.
So... I rooted My Att Galaxy SII. But... this jerk who made the video forgot to say NOT to use it if you have the latest version. (Which is just dumb)
So my wifi is broke, can't be turned on for more than a few seconds.
Crap.
Now what do I do? Factory resetting is out of the question as I've spent far too many hours customizing this bad boy to loose it all because some fool didn't think about warning anyone. :/

Wrong forum for ATT Galaxy S2.
#1, you're in the wrong galaxy s2 forum. There's one for the the skyrocket and one for the hspa version. If you flash a kernel from the correct version I believe you should be OK. No guarantees though

If a Rooting Process will cause issues on a specific version. THAT needs to be stated in the information. Even if I was an expert I would not of know because it said nothing referring to versions or cautions.
That's like saying it's the users fault if he tried a custom rom damaging said device, because the creator of the rom didn't post information that he knew.

FWIW all the modifications are done at user's discretion so it's never anyone's fault but yourself unless you get someone else to do it.
On topic though, try flashing a full firmware from ODIN which includes the modem, pda and csc files. Don't forget though that you should get this file from the right forum, or else you'll be stuck with a non working phone period.
Also, really, a valid question is, where did you get the rooting method you were trying to use? After all, you DID post this very post asking for help with your SGH-I777 in the i9100 forums. So if you got the method from a forum meant for a device that isn't yours, can you really legitimately blame the poster, just because you used it on YOUR device? I don't think that's fair.
EDIT: or do you have a Skyrocket, which is an SGH-I727?
I'm saying, if I myself, was posting information or a Rom/Kernel, if I know it doesn't work with a specific version of a device, and that users should NOT use it. It is my responsibility to tell them first as a warning, that's all I am saying.
And what I'm saying, is if you got the method from a forum meant for i9100 phones, and NOT for ATT Galaxy S2 (which is the SGH-I777), how is that the other guy's fault that you used something not meant for your phone, just because you happened to find the information? C'mon, man. Take some responsibility.
Couldn't you just get titanium backup then back up everything? Then unroot to 2.3.4 the root your phone so wifi works then restore with titanium backup. I did something very similar to this to fix my phone and I've had a couple problems restoring but that's probably just cause I am a newb. Overall it worked pretty good though.
Something is wrong at the kernel level. Titanium backup won't help.

I rooted mine using mashi's method (a rooted AT&T rom) and it made my phone incredibly laggy with respect to the capacitive buttons. However, a friend of mine also rooted his using a different method and I haven't heard him complain at all. The method he used to root is a little more complex than some of the others available.
In either case, if you do decide to take the plunge, I've made stocks files of the Bell Galaxy Note that you can flash and get back to normal. You can find them at this thread.
And what wish777 said is good advice. Read up on it before you do. Be sure you're comfortable with it.

For what it's worth, there is a LOT of information on these forums, some of it conflicting, a lot of it vague, and sometimes it's not easy to tell how it all ties together. I found that to an extent, the more I read, the more confused I got. But you gotta start somewhere. Merely reading and practical experience are two very different things. You can use Mashi's method. Personally, I used Da_G's method and found it fairly easy and "idiot-proof" but it will trip your flash counter. And I can personally vouch for MrJoran's method for returning to Bell stock (including a flash counter reset as provided by Braway). See? So many different ways of going about it! Good luck!

I have to agree. Best to sift through it and find out what the general consensus is. Lot's of trial and error though. I would advise against using mashi's rooted ROM though because of the lag it caused. It's based of the AT&T ROM and does not play nice with the Bell kernel is my guess. There is a good root method here that I know has been used successfully and doesn't change the ROM you're using. And from what I understand, Da_G's method shouldn't change your ROM either but it does load an AT&T kernel I believe. Pros and cons to all the methods of course. Best of luck and don't hesitate to ask. That's how we learn.
I'm still waiting for a pure mac osx root method...

I completely agree that the sheer volume of information in this particular forum is overwhelming and, in many cases, unclear and not (necessarily) relevant to the Canadian Note handhelds (Rogers, Bell or Telus).
I'm looking for information specific to rooting and unrooting my Rogers Note I717R with my Bell service and it's been a frustrating couple of days, with a handful of fruitless attempts to unroot, resulting in a re-flash to stock.
Oh well...I'll keep digging and doing this research. It seems that it was so much easier on my Moto Atrix, but I digress

However, it seems like every device has it's own quirks so I can't guarantee that rooting won't affect anything on your specific device.

This method is easy and very similar to the one I used. But I'm fairly certain it will trip the flash counter. Just be sure to reset it if you need any warranty work.

Same one I linked in my previous post. Haven't used it personally but I know people who have and it worked for them. Added bonus of not replacing your stock ROM, which is a big plus for us Canadian users who don't want AT&T crap.

Mine is a I717M, are you sure it'll work without causing lag?! Thank you very much for the help!! I might try to root it tonight (if I ever find a tutorial on how to backup my Note), I'll report back after here

Finally, a tutorial that seems to be trustable, great! Oh and, what do you mean by ROM? Firmware/OS? If yes, then this method will simply like "inject" the "hack" in the phone? So is it going to be easier to return to stock in case my device gets slow?

I rooted using Da_G method. Easy to follow install guide. Haven't had any problems whatsoever. But I do agree with previous posters, the info can be very overwhelming. Some devs provide good step by step info while others are vague or don't consider others level of experience when writing instructions. Read, read, read and only venture into the unknown when you are reasonably comfortable.

No need to make backup unless you what to make a NANDROID using CWM. Otherwise, you can use the stock stuff I made for the Bell Note already.
Flash counter tripping is no big deal. Don't worry about it.
ROM is the operating system of the phone. And yes, this method does seem to just add what is needed to your stock ROM. But again, easy to return to stock using the files I've posted.

Ok so if I'm right, a nandroid backup is a backup of the ROM with all the user settings/data that you can use to go back to the previous settings in case you don't like the new ROM you've flashed onto your device?
One last question, is it 100% sure that the files you uploaded are going to work my I717M? I bought it in montreal, if that can help you determining if it will work or not... And once again, thank you very much for the information!

You're correct on the NANDROID. And as I understand it, all the i717M are the same. I have the same i717M as you and that's where the files are from. And Naughty Bot also has an i717M and has used the files to go back to stock. The only thing that may be different on yours (and I doubt this) is there may be some French specific stuff because you bought it in Quebec but you can confirm that for us. Even if there is a long as you don't mind losing that stuff then you're good to go.

From what I've learned so far, there's no way to back up ALL your data and user settings until AFTER you've rooted the phone (using NANDROID or something like Titanium Backup). If you have a Google account and store your contacts and email in Gmail, that should be all be stored on Google's servers. You can use something like MyBackup Pro to back up some of your stuff but in most cases, you can't back up app data (like game saves and stuff) until after the phone is rooted. Android just won't let you get at it. However, most rooting methods don't usually touch your data, just make sure to follow the instructions closely and also make sure that the root method has been tested on your particular version of the phone. Take note that, if you unroot the phone, all your NANDROID/Titanium restore data becomes useless (phone needs to be rooted to restore it, pretty sure).
As for the flash counter, it used to be a big deal but not so much anymore. The phone has a counter that records how many times the phone has been flashed with a custom (non-stock) ROM. If you ever had to return your phone for warranty work and the counter was greater than one, Sammy had grounds to refuse to honour the warranty. You could unroot the phone but that didn't reset the flash counter. Braway came up with a method a few weeks ago but the problem was that it wasn't specifically for Canadian phones. Then MrJoran managed to obtain the stock Android components (with some help from willing friends) for the Bell Note and assembled a method of unrooting the Bell Note with provisions for resetting the flash counter. Now the only thing you have to worry about is if you brick the phone in such a way that you can't flash stock ROMs back to it. Of course, in that case Samsung probably wouldn't be able to see what you've done anyway (most likely). But once the warranty is expired, flash away. Go nuts, no warranty, doesn't matter.
I stand to be corrected on any/all of this. And what MrJoran said about the French stuff.

Awesome! That's all I needed to know by the way, these are the only apps that might not be included in your files, I'm not sure though and I don't care if I loose them I think I can easily get them back on Bell's site, I will confirm that in a day or two, once I convinced myself to root the Note!

Yeah you're right, the phone has to be rooted to be restored and thanks for explaining the flash counter thing in dept, it's much more clear now! I was just a bit afraid to root it since I've been experiencing a weird bug on the phone and I might have to bring it to Bell to have it checked up or something but now, it's all good!
ok..so here's the problem i have a Samsung galaxy s2 i777 from track-phone/straight talk (im not sure what it is...) it was sold to me online i reset the whole phone and this cyangenMod thing keeps coming up when it boots up after the factory reset I don't want it on the phone but i have no idea how to uninstall it or get rid of it. i just want to get the phone back to how it came out of the box like a new phone but i'm at a lost i've tried the oden program and the phone wont connect to it. i don't know what files it needs or what i have to do i'm at a complete and total loss...
if someone could help me out with this it would be a REALLY big help to me thank you to anyone who reads this and an even bigger thank you to the person(s) who help.
Why would you want to get rid of CyanogenMod? It's quite possibly the best thing to ever happen to phones.
Especially if you're running cm10.1, it's 4.2.2

I want to get rid of it cuz I have no idea what is what it can do or why it's even there I'm not a big fan of mods and if I were to mod anything i would do an extreme amount of research of how to install and uninstall with cm I have no idea what's going on

You want to get rid of it? Easy
Option 1: return it to seller, demand s/he send you another one with pure stock firmware on it, not a custom one or request for the refund.
Option 2: reverse back to stock (from CM) yourself. Since you're here, you should have read anyway, so read up those threads especially the stickies and DIY.

The other posters Actually have given you good advice, and it appears that they have pointed you to the place to answer your question! Really!
It sounds like you have a modified Straight Talk phone (please note that the ATT version is I777 and the ST version is S959G. It would be interesting to know whether you have an I777s or S959G).
IF you have an S959G, then your best bet is to check the thread posted down below as Phalanx and the others have mentioned --it's literally below the post you created (several posts below now, just look for the title "Straight Talk SGS2- SGH-S959G" (<- or click on these "straight talk" words)
It may seem frustrating to get a phone that is customized, and right now you just want a phone; However, you actually have one of the nicest and newest roms available for this type of phone!
IF your phone boots CM10.1 and you have the normal android screens, then you have everything that the ST or AT&T company would provide on a "normal" phone, but without some of the junk and advertising that often infects our phones! Try it out! The interface is not that much different from "stock."
Still, if you don't like your phone that way, YOU can fix it and it is not really hard, but just takes some reading and patience to gain understanding of the techniques and processes (learning the principles also is interesting! :laugh
But it will take you at least a few hours of reading, and a bit patience to scan through the Straight Talk links and pages. If you do that you'll see others who have your issue, and also others who turned the issue around to make it a plus!
A modified phone is more of a commitment than a stock phone -but it returns more to the user! Especially if you want to adjust it, enhance it, or appreciate it, you have to put in time.
If that's not for you -perhaps turn it around on ebay. But a working CM10.1 on a Galaxy S2 is a good machine!
