why you want that, better speed? or more memory? i don't think that is "possible"

My phone is having 478mb ram to i just wanna increase it to 512mb.

No, RAM size is fixed in the RAM chip. There's nothing like a Linux swap partition/Windows ReadyBoost to help with this.

No not possible, but if you install cyanogen mod you can make it compress the ram, that you basically have more free ram than before. That is what i do.

Update My rom
Hello everybody
I have galaxy s4 clone I would like to update my rom :
Model Number : GT-I9500
Android 4.2.2
Baseband Version : I9500XXUAMDE
Kernel version 3.4.5-I9500ZSKJ6-CL679970 Sat Aug 10 19:17:34 CST 2013
Build number :GINGERBREAD.ZSKJ6
Custom build version galaxy.20130810.F.V015
internal storage : 344 Mb
Ram : 311 Mb
Please Help Me

Use swap file. Just google it. Even though it's slow it's worth a try.

Yeah @aymenmeer ,you have been helped by me
From my s4 Powered by
Prism barebone v15
VoLTaqe Kernel.

You won't be able to add more RAM but you can add swap to your SD card storage to be treated like RAM but it will wear out that SD Card in a certain amount of time. It's also slower than regular RAM but Class 10 SD Cards are still a nice way to add swap to be used like RAM if you need it.
I used ROHESOFT Ram Expander for that reason (got the free version since I wouldn't pay an absurd price) but I was able to use an extra 1GB SWAP treated as RAM or 500MB on my S3 mini. I did have to change swap parameters to speed it up though and best experience. It was actually fairly smooth for the most part but not always recommended.
Greenify I used to reduce background processes from using RAM as well.
Other option includes zRAM or zSwap from kernel adiutor and custom ROMs for less RAM usage. Another way is this Xposed Module called Low Ram Device which you can force your device to act as a low RAM device , which makes applications use less RAM and significantly free up RAM space.
However for a device with less than a GB of Ram or 1GB, I'd say use Low Ram device Xposed Module , reduce background processes and importantly, add swap to your class10 (class6 or above is fine too sometimes) SD Card to be treated as extra RAM . It may feel slower but not too slow and the difference is less noticeable with faster SD cards .
As for overclocking RAM Speed, I don't believe that's actually possible on even a custom kernel yet but I'm not so certain. I found this thread by Google search Overclock android ram speed.

overclock ram is different overMEMORY. ram have bus clock (amount data can transmitted) overclock ram mean make ram faster when transmit data, does not help improve memory shortage.

[Q] Real RAM size

Hello, as we know, Galaxy S1 was advertised with 512MB ram, but in real there was only ~340MB of usable RAM! So i want to ask, how much ram is usable for applications and how much is free after fresh boot? Can someone check this? You can see this informations in task manager.
I think its about 800-850 RAM.
The original SGS had 512mb of ram as advertised. For some reason people assume that their phone behaves different than their computer. The operating system and everything like that needs to use the ram as well.
AS stated though I understand the SGS2 to have approximately 850MB of ram free after running the OS etc.
If I continually hit advanced task killer it will give me about 445MB free. In the standard task manager it says /833MB.
I don't really think this is all too relevant. You will never have anywhere near the maximum amount available just as you won't in a modern PC either and with phone OS's getting more power hungry and complex this is unlikely to change.
If the amount of ram bothers you check the video of the guy doing heavy multitasking on the phone and that will clear your mind.

Thank you for usefull information. I'm just interested in real numbers, because HTC phones have all advertised ram available to system, instead of samsung, which is cheating about this. Yes the OS is using ram... but from 833MB, not from 1gig. How can system use ram which is not visible to system? Android is linux, you can easily see how much ram is available and usable for system... it's 833 not 1gig. I believe that there is 1GB ram chip, but some memory is dedicated to other components. However 833 MB is really enough for mobile phone.

It did have 512MB of ram in hardware, but a pretty big part of the 512mb was actually dedicated video memory for 3d and movies. The Galaxy Tab 7" which was advertised with 512MB actually had ~600MB of ram in hardware, with extra ram outside the 512MB being for the dedicated video.
With the SGS2 it seems to be as the original SGS with dedicated video ram being taken out of the 1GB. It's easy enough to check by looking at the kernel config files. (And you can even tweak the numbers a bit to get a bit more free ram, as was done in the SGS)
Hope we're not heading down the old line of trying to run with loads of free RAM... I'm of the philosophy that if you have the RAM available, you should use it, rather than have to load things up from storage due to removing it to make a number bigger on a task manager...

Htc does/did this as well. My Legend is advertised with 384mb ram, but only 290 is available to the system.

Your philosophy is absolutely correct. In Windows that might be a good thing, because it starts buffering to the HD when you run out. But Android will just close some background processes automatically to clear ram as needed.

Unfortunately people these days only know about ram management from that poor excuse of an OS called Windows.... excluding 7.

Agreed, as long as there is a big line between FREE RAM and TOTAL RAM. More total RAM is always a very very good thing regardless of how good the ram management is.
This thread is about total RAM available to Linux/Android, so it's good imho.

[Q] Android RAM

Hi people, just a simple question that hope has not been made, do you think, in a short time (few months) 2 GB of RAM will be required for our devices to work well?
The most important is smooth and stable, higher RAM is not neccesary.
Probably as tech gets higher, more ram will be required for later games and applications.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Xparent SkyBlue Tapatalk 2
Cellphones today are the same as computer is... the higher hardware it would only be required to those who uses heavy features, like games and developing programs.
So, if you want a device just to basic use, you'll not need high spec cellphones.
It really depends on the usage, but there will be a lot of resource-consuming games released soon.
Some custom roms like miui also take a lot of memory! 1GB is getting short...

You don't really NEED 2GB of RAM, but does help. Better multitasking, mostly.

me personally i don't think that phones really need 2gb like gagdude said. I think if you have a kernel that makes the phone run faster then not necessarily 2gb is needed but helps alot.
Seeing phones like the new Nexus or the Galaxy S3 Alpha are coming out with two GB... I dont know if there will be apps or tweaks like that new one on the S3 Alpha that will not work well in our 1 GB phones soon.
i have a htc desire with cm10 4.1.2, it only has 576mb ram, but still kind of smooth, so 2gb is not necessary, but still more is better, because it will be more smooth, espicially when you playing games.
I don't think it's necessary and yeah you guys are right phones are like computers.
HD Screen
Quad Core
2GB Ram
Powerful gpus
If cpus would be x86 and with a mouse and keyboard you could get a fully working windows 7 on your phone. Even most of the computers at schools and libraries are not quad core.
I think ubuntu realized that and they are developing a fully functional ubuntu for phones with two and more cores.

Personally, I feel that 2gb ram is needed. Reason being that stock s3 uses around 700 - 900mb of ram. Of course, you may still say that you can install custom rom and decrease its usage to maybe 500 - 600mb. But if you run a lot of apps, it will eventually use more than 1gb of ram and the remaining usage will be send to and forth the swap(slower access).
Despite having zram which improves performance for devices with low rams, but ram is still faster than zram so having more ram is indeed better.
With a device that has to swap to and forth the swap and ram, battery life will be reduced and the performance will not be that good as the instructions of the code inside the ram has to be done then only it can be swapped with the instructions inside the swap and so it reduces the performance(in theory, you may not feel it unless you run something i/o intensive)
Go read up more on ram, zram and swap and you'll get it why I'd said to get a device with more ram.
Platform fragmentation on android will surely slow down this process. Also the maximum heap space available for a Java application (opengl textures and native code are excluded from this limitation) doesn't make extra RAM so important for many apps.
But for sure I wouldn't complain if my phone had more RAM.
1GB is enough. 2GB? You will play Asphalt 7 & Modern Combat 3 at the same time?

Reducing shared graphics memory

Hi
I have a device with 256mb RAM but it only shows 111mb user accessible and the rest is hidden (probably)
with usually on 30-40mb cached and 2-5mb free ram its difficult multitasking properly or using any app properly for that matter.
How can I reduce the shared graphics memory from the kernel to get more user ram?
Thank you
i got same problem. my device have 512mb but free ram is max. 210 RAM.
++bump++
Although I'm not sure...here's my idea of what you would need to do...
Get the kernel source, find the files/drivers related to graphics...edit the amount of dedicated memory
I don't suggest doing this as it will likely cause the system to become unstable due to lack of dedicated ram...I wouldn't expect much multi tasking ability from any device that has under 500mb of ram total...

FullHD Screen Per App RAM Eating

I had Galaxy s2 with 821MB of RAM and i know that every app (not game) was eats about 20-50MB of RAM
I was sure that xperia z2 with 3GB of RAM it's more than enough but the reality is different
I see that any app in my Z2 is eats about 80-120MB! But why?
OK, maybe i know, because of tha resolution difference (in s2 800X480)
Anyone have any additional ideas for the increased RAM eating?
It uses more RAM because it can. In your S2, the OS had to ration what ram the device had between what the OS needed and what each app wanted, plus saved a bit for cached processes so overall everything would feel snappy. With 3GB of RAM, the OS has a lot more room to spread out, so it does.
Think of it like this, if your family lived in a 2 bedroom apartment, then moved into a 4 bedroom house, you wouldn't leave 2 rooms empty. Either people that didn't have a room to themselves would use them, or you would find other uses for them. Android is doing the same thing with the RAM.
You have 3GB, don't worry about how much RAM is being used, ignore it and enjoy your phone
Dont worry about ram at all, when ram is needed the kernel will free some ram up
Usualy you only actualy have 14mb free, your ram in your settings or most apps show freeable ram

I'm looking for a more accurate explanation for this fact
I'm from these users them uninstalling system apps and care to run with minimal battery drainage.
So, not received exact reason for eating the amount of memory unlike in galaxy s2

I was run with galaxy s2 on 400MB of free RAM and maybe 250 when running browser+gps+poweramp
This is not windows xp, its android and its healthy to have ram used rather than being free.

More Free ram on nougat custom roms?

I was on miui8, where i used to get 1.3 to 1.7 Gb of ram free on my redmi note 4 mido 3gb ram phone. But on every los14 based rom i get only 700 to 900 mb ram free. Does anyone knoe how can i get more free ram on custom roms?? Is there any app or tweak which can free ram, please tell.

Why do you think more free RAM improves anything?
Free ram = wasted ram.

Exactly the same question I was going to ask. Forget free RAM. Forget RAM management apps. Forget closing apps to free up more RAM. Linux memory management is already quite efficient. Your utilities are not going to improve it (either at all, or by any significant amount).
That's it. Free RAM is unused RAM. It's useless until it is used... Any device has inbuilt memory management that cares about the memory needs of running processes. If your device shows free RAM of 1GB all the time than your device has 1GB more RAM than it needs.
Why you want more free ram? You bought a phone with 3GBs of ram just to use half of it, why?
They think its windows, when you dont have free ram anymore it will lags or out of memory lol...
