MTP Initialisation taking forever to connect! - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, I've searched and searched for this issue and can't find the answer to this. My tab was running fine until a few days ago. I was transferring the Ubuntuv5 image to my tablet and I got an error which caused it to fail to transfer the file. Since then, I get "MTP initialisation" and my MTP won't connect unless I leave it overnight. It will connect if left overnight and I can move files around and all that like normal. Odin and adb recognize the tablet right away.
I'm running Task 14, pershoot's kernel.
Odin'd back to stock
uninstalled kies/samsung drivers and reinstalled them
usb debugging is off
tried on two different computers, 3 different usb cords.
I'm at a loss as to what to try next. Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!
Edit* Ok, media scanner is the issue. I've been trying to solve this for 3 days straight. Force stopping media storage will connect it immediately. Sorry for the useless post. (I'm kinda good at that).

Even when force stopping media storage, my PC will not detect. When I plug it in now, it acts as if it's only charging

as soon as I read task14, I knew already this was common.
something acts up on that, you may need to remove all drivers and reinstall them again, literally :\
That's the first step I can assume.
Then again, evo you should try out the same too.

No USB Notification at all

Hey,
I've had my Unlocked HTC Hero for nearly five months now with out any problems (official ROM only). Suddenly I'm having problems with the USB connection. When I plug in the USB cable I don't get any notification on the phone - at all. I don't get the option to select HTC Sync or to mount the SD card for transferring files.
Any ideas? I'd be happy to reflash, but don't have the USB connectivity!
thanks
Ugh - Just did a hard reset which wiped all the data, but did not bring back my usb connectivity. I've also tried multiple USB cables and several computers.
Hmm....
Now, I've got it to connect a couple of times. Using either a hard reset or flash the rom, then download some apps, and then the USB is recognized (but only once).
Might be worth trying a different cable if you can?
Adam
I really don't get this. Every now and then (like 1 in 50 tries) I get the notification to pop up, but most of the time it doesn't. Any one with any ideas?
Same problem here
Hello,
I have the same problem, it started happening after the Android 2.1.-update. Suddenly nothing works, i suspect is an OS problem. If you have any solution please get back on this thread. Cheers!
Did you look at the dates on this? He clearly wasn't using the 2.1 update as it was all the way back in February. I suspect you've broken the connection somehow, either the connection in your phone or in the cable.
Trust me I've searched the problem, many people have reported this in 2.1-update 1. I've tried with several computers both Windows and OS X, different cables ... etc.
i got this problem to! i cant do anything because i cant connect to my computer
I have the same problem, did you find a solution?

[Q] (ANOTHER) Vibrant Not Recognized by PC

Sorry but, believe me, I've been dealing with this all week and I have read every post possibly pertaining to this subject, but I can't find a fix.
Went to flash the latest Bionix and PC (Windows XP-32/64-Bit HP) won't recognize my Vibrant. It's the only machine I've ever used with this phone. I plug in and get the USB icon and the Android Debug icon in the menu bar. Pull it down and it says "USB Debugging Connected" & "USB Connected". I can "Connect USB Storage" if I like, and it says "connected", but it's never recognized by the PC no matter what.
I can go into "Media Player" mode and "KIES" and same thing, it's just the USB icon instead of the Green Android. I've changed cords. I've used all the ports, front & back. Flashed back to Nero-5. I've gone into download mode and ODIN doesn't pick it up either.
32-Bit drivers are updated, but I've been doing a lot of install/reinstalls. The last thing I did on this device was flash Bionix-V. A couple weeks later I updated my wife's stock Vibrant via KIES.
What the hell can I do now? Thanks
edit...nevermind, sorry...at least i bumped you!!
Ha! Thanks TS10. And Mounting was certainly part of the problem. I could connect the USB storage and, in fact, it would say “connect” on the phone (“You can now transfer files between your SD card and PC” or something close to that), but it would still not show up on the PC. That’s what was driving me CRAZY.
But get this… Late last night, out of total frustration, I plugged the cable into a USB hub, that was connected to a removable HDD, and suddenly the Vibrant was recognized. I couldn’t believe it. I had plugged directly into that same USB port, on the back of the machine, at least 6x. Why the hell would it connect through a USB hub?!
I have no friggin’ explanation. But I’m running the latest Bionix now! At least I though that until I just check in here.

Samsung won't connect to computer

Today I deleted some programs off my SGS2 that were in the list in the SGS2 General Forum. My phone was able to connect to the PC before that. After I uninstalled the applications on my phone, it no longer tries to talk to my computer. I have reinstalled the drivers, restarted both my computer and phone, and still nothing. I am worried it was something I uninstalled but I doubt it. I was quite careful removing the programs using Titanium Backup and they were completely unrelated in my opinion. I have a feeling it is only coincidental.
Anyhow can you please help me troubleshoot what has happened? Thanks.
Perhaps it wasn't related. I figured out how to do it with USB debugging ticked. I never had to do that before. Originally it would connect automatically with USB debugging unticked. Now it only connects with USB debugging ticked and after I say that it is 'OK' pretty much.
Still, if anyone can shed some light on what I may have uninstalled let me know. Thanks.
may not apply to you since im guessing you tried it both times on the same comp with the same OS. i find that kies hates 64 bit OS. it just wouldn't connect on my desktop running win 7 ultimate 64bit but connects just fine on my laptop running win 7 enterprise 32bit. anyway... i usually have debugging mode on anyway, much easier for me to access the phone and sd card using explorer instead of stupid kies. kies i only use for firmware updates or atleast until i've rooted this thing.
Sorry I should have mentioned that I am using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Thanks, shabs52. Good to know it could be my OS that is fumbling. I would have to agree as well, Kies stinks. I can't wait until I can get a stock OS without any crapware.
Anyhow it is strange how it worked for awhile and just stopped, but debug mode is better anyway.
Win 7 x64 Kies failed always .
Wiped drive brand new Win 7 x64 install Kies no problems = bad driver install or conflicts on original setup .
jje
I'm having this problem too
Despite my Win7 64bits, Kies always connected automatically, both with SGS2 and my previous SGS. Yesterday my SGS2 started to behave strange: when I plug the USB cable it doesn't recognizes automatically (takes a few seconds), and only starts charging the battery, but the data link is not stablished (Kies won't even recognize there is a device connected). When I remove the USB cable the charging indicator continues to show as if it still was connected (again, for a few seconds). The same with the power cord. Since the symptoms were the same in my notebook (also Win 7 64) I tried it on a Win XP 32 - same thing (different USB cables). This makes me think the problem is with the device itself. Anyone have seen this?
Try deleting the drivers on your pc for samsung usb while the phone is unplugged. Then plug back the phone and windows 7 should automatically search and install the required files...worked for me with w7 64
I already did that, but the problem persists. Today some new symptoms "arrived", which led me to this other thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1151863). The phone eventually enters car mode, or beeps and shows the charging indicator (even though it's not plugged). Weird. Will take to service tomorrow.
Im having this same problem with my epic touch. Was just wondering if anyone found a way to fix it.

USB to PC: keeps disconnecting when accessing memory

Hi mates,
since this evening, my Galaxy S2 (unbranded, unrooted, with stock firmware) was connecting fine with my PC in the "kies mode". I could use kies flawlessy, and I could regularly see my phone in my windows 7 (x86) explorer, and use explorer to read and write files from and to its memory.
Then, this evening, I got a notification, from kies, that an update (of kies) was available (2.0.2.11071.182.2), and I gave my consent to the updater. It did all its dirty job but after the installation of the new version, despite the phone connects via USB, every time I try to access the phone's memory from the PC, the connection drops. It restores backafer one second or two, but then again, if I try to access the phone's memory, it drops agains. The problem appears indifferently when accessing phone's memory from kies, and when doing it from windows' explorer, and this makes me suspect of the drivers, that the new version of kies brought along.
The phone connects correctly to the PC in the direct USB mode, and I can access its memory with no problem, and this also suggests that the problem should be the drivers.
So I uninstalled everything (new kies and drivers), and rebooted the PC, then I dowloaded what I believe is the previous version of kies: 2.0.1.11053.99.3, and launched its installation. After the end of the process, I rebooted the PC, just to be safe. According to the list of the installed software in my PC (in "Control Panel > Uninstall a program"), the drivers have rolled back, as expected, to version 1.3.2410.0 (before they were 1.4.something).
At the first connection of the phone to the PC after the reboot, I got notification from windows that the device installed correctly and it is ready to use (all the tree drivers are indeed reported as installed correctly)...
The point is that all this did not solve the problem at all, and USB connection still behaves exactly as badly as before.
I tried again uninstalling and reinstalling everything, also adding a manual clean up of the windows' registry from any entry related to "samsung", checking that the phone was not set in "USB debugging" mode, and disabling the antivirus, but despite everything appears to be fine, the phone regularly keeps on refusing to maintain USB connection alive everytime I try to access its memory.
What drives me mad is the fact that until this evening, everything was working flawlessly!
What else can I try????
I've just made a test on another PC running windows XP, with latest Kies 2.0.2.11071_128 installed. It's my office PC, and although I'm not 100% sure, I seem to remember that, until yesterday, my phone was connecting fine with it, and with that version of kies. But now, all of a sudden, I have the same problem also with this PC...
So, likely, it is a problem of the phone... the MTP application restarts everytime I try to access the phone from the PC, so... what can I try on the phone, to see if I can fix this annoying issue? I DON'T WANT TO FACTORY RESET MY PHONE, PLEASE!!!!
If any of you has any suggestion, I would be more than grateful...

I had the same problem the other day and I could not find a way to fix it, in the end I did a factory reset from Settings/Privacy and its ok now, just wiping cache did not fix it, factory reset was needed.
Dear Odia, thank you very much for replying and giving me a clue.
So... it appears that there's nothing else to do, is there? Buhahhaa!!! I want to cry!!!! I haven't made a backup and resetting the phone will be really painful... I'm already starting to feel the pain in my ass!!!
By chance, do you happen to know if I will have to buy again the apps I have already bought from the market? I have always kept both "Backup personal data" and "Automatic restore" ticked in "Settings>Privacy"... Could this be of any help?

You can always make a backup now before the reset and you will not have to buy paid apps again.
Yes but how can I backup my phone if kies will loose the connection with the phone as soon as it tries to access its memory?
Oh wait a moment, Perhaps I could use Kies air? Deos it allow to backup the phone? 'cause I can't test it now in my office, there's no wifi here...
From what I can tell, its the amount of the power that is supplied to the USB port itself that is the issue. I have the same problem when I put my i9100 on certain computers. Same thing happens to my WD MyPassport. Certain computers it works fine, and some it will power it for a bit, but once the device starts to draw too much current, it just disconnects.
This is why I try to do all my modding and flashing on a laptop, since, for me, they seem to be the most reliable in keeping devices powered up properly.
This is certainly a good point, but in my particular case, USB connection used to work up until yesterday with all the PCs I have (2 laptops and a desktop PC), whereas since yesterday, it works with none (with and without using the same USB ports). In addition if I use straight USB connection (hence not through the MTP app used by kies), it works fine.
Anyway what you have just mentioned is actually what scares me, because it would mean a hardware fault. But I'm crossing my fingers, hopefully it's (just) a software related issue and a factory reset will solve it. After all, straight connection works, so it would be really surprising if it were a hardware fault.
I will try resetting everything when I get home. Another "nice" busy evening to account to Samsung!
I guess if all samsung customers were honestly paid for every hour spent mending/fixing the issues of samsung products, the company would declare bankrupt in a matter of a few days!
Ok, I solved the issue with a drastic factory reset.
Thanks Odia for helping.
I spent 8 hours backing up and restoring everything included all the settings and personalisations. I went to bed at 3 am, eating only a quick sandwich in front of the bloody phone.
THANK YOU SAMSUNG, I wish to electrocute all your ****ing managers.
I hate when something in a device screws up all of a sudden and noboby knows why. It could happen again any time, and again I would have to spend hours mending a stupid phone instead of enjoying my life.
By the way, does anybody knows exactly what data is automatically backed up and restored on google servers by these functions?
"Settings>Privacy>Backup of personal data"
"Settings>Privacy>Automatic restore"
I always had both tiched, and I noticed that almost all the applications downloaded from the market that were installed on the phone, were automatically re-downloaded and restored on the phone at first boot after reset, but I'm not too shure I have understood what else was automatically restored.
I just read this thread for the first time, and was sympathetic to your issue when I started reading. I could see that there had been problems, but suggestions had been made and you seemed to be making good progress.
I was getting ready for offering advice and wishing you well with your problem.
Then suddenly you start to wish physical harm on Samsung employees.
Bye.

This is a simple solution try it and it will work for you the next time you face it most of the time it is a hardware issue i have been facing the same issue and nothing helped neither the factory reset nor the *#7284# procedure.
Take a pointy object like a pin or a paper and then clean your usb slot of the phone properly cuz most of the times usb pin points gets connected with each other due to the atmosphere and metal reaction. After that it will work like a charm for you. Before commenting anything negative i would appreciate if those who are facing this issue for a long time try this and then comment
Had the same problem, solved it by upgrading the phone software.
Setting > About Phone > Software update.
No need to afraid losing files. Hope that helps.
i faced the same problem on the GalaxyS sometime back. i did factory reset too. I got the same problem again. but i remembered it working on my LG TV so i did not go for factory reset. I went for re-install of samsung's USB driver for Windows. now it is working fine.
I fully agree that Samsung needs to be more responsible and responsive in resolving the such problems without causing data losses.

You could have saved a lot of hassle by installing a custom Rom and Kernel. I hate MTP mode! Mass storage mode is much better, I never had any problems with that....
Workaround - Power Management
This may be fixed, for now. However, in the future, there is a small workaround that you can use so that you're not required to wipe your phone every time this happens.
Here's what I do:
Since the device's connection is severed after the use of a certain amount of power, we can control the power management of the port that the device is connected to.
On WinXP:
Enter "Control Panel" > "System"
Click on "Hardware"
Click on "Device Manager"
Find the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" section
Click the "+" next to that, and find the "USB Root Hub" that the device is connected to.
Right-click on the Hub, then select "Properties"
Click on the "Power Management" tab
Then, UNcheck the box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
This will prevent the connection from resetting. It's a quick workaround that works pretty well for me.
However, I ought to note that the changes should be undone after you're done with syncing the device, ESPECIALLY if you're on a laptop. Otherwise, you could risk a lot of battery/power usage within a short time, even if there is no device connected to that port.
Good luck, I hope this helps.
Cheers!

Please don't bail out because of that comment, i have been having this issue for a month and AT&T almost sold me another phone telling me it was the USB PORT.
I changed my phone setup dialing *#7284# and changed the UART to : PDA from Modem and same for USB (to PDA) modes. This helped get connected as before it would not even recognize the phone (computer would not do so).
I was am not sure if it is not the battery or charging circuitry, as others also reported, but my charging circuit is working fine and my battery charges 100% and last all day as normal. I can connect to the USB port and see my phone for a short while but it will suddenly disconnect.
But same as before it suddenly disconnects and will reconnect cycling continuously. I also believe it is the charge circuit because when it is charging, i hear the phone constanlty beeping from turning the schreen on/off. Same as when it is plugged into the usb port on computer.
Am tempted to buy a battery, but is can run the phone on the USB port without a battery in the phone. Problem continues without a battery...disconnecting and connecting to the computer.

I was plagued with this same problem, until I tried the above fix, and it works brilliantly! No more disconnects, great stuff.
It's pretty old topic but maybe someone has same issue and doesn't want to loose data. I had similar problem (couldn't connect to device, also couldn't install/uninstall any stuff because of no-space-available error).
I managed to download all pictures/documents via adb - worked pretty well. A sample command to retrieve all camera pictures:
adb pull /mnt/sdcard/DCIM

[Q] Transferring files over USB - "device has stopped responding"

So I've been trying all night to transfer a handful of CBR files to my ATP through its USB connection. I'm doing this from my desktop which is running windows 7. (in case any or all of those details might help anyone)
At first, I was trying to transfer with the prime plugged into my keyboard dock with USB debugging enabled. Then I disabled USB debugging. Then I tried, with debugging disabled, when connecting to the tablet directly. Finally I tried connected directly to the tablet, but with USB debugging enabled.
At every step in the process I will get through one folder or so, and then get an error on my desktop that says the device has stopped responding or has disconnected, and the transfer will fail.
With a bit more trial and error it seems to be that any time I interact with the prime in any way while it is transferring (even something as simple as scrolling back and forth a little on the home screen to keep it from going to sleep) it fails.
I'm not rooted, I'm on the standard firmware (.21 - latest as of now), and I've tried restarting the prime.
I can not make these files transfer and it's driving me insane. Anyone have any suggestions or theories on how to fix this?
I was hoping that there would be a response, esplanation, or solution to your post.
I am experiencing the same thing when I try to transfer a Titanium Backup Folder back on to the Tablet, be it to the internal SD Card or the External SD Card.
I've also tried all the options you mention (Debugging ON/OFF, etc.)
Are we the only two people experiencing this?

File transfers
Hi,
I was having the same problems, then gave up and fully charged it,
the next day I adb'd the same blob file and it did it in 5 min, the
night before when it was about a quarter charged it was taking a half
hour and would fail. I had it in CWM recovery. So try fully charging it, I have
also had better luck on a xp machine, then my win7 machine.
I had the same problem on .21 not unlocked nor rooted.
I did full wipe data after upgrading to .21 then connected as MTP and copied files successfully. Hope this help.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda premium
not to put you off trying to use usb, i had the same issue transferring 5GB from the prime to PC.
i found using Total Commander 1.0 rc5 for Android with the network addon i could transfer it faster via wireless (only due to the poor performance i had with usb)
so just share the content and drag it across the wifi.
Total commander *www*.*ghisler*.*com/android.htm
Plugins *ghisler*.*com*/androidplugins/
(remove the *, i cant post links yet )
one thing you could try if you haven't is plug it into one of the ports on the back of your computer instead of the front/top/side, sometimes these ports are under powered.
I have this error when i'm trying copy file more than 4Gb to sd card formatted FAT32
might be silly to ask but when you connect did you make sure your on media transfer not the camera one?
This might be the reason. I hate it when this happens when I'm transferring files and I cant change or play with the tablet till its done. Its becoming more of a singletask device. I'm starting to lose faith in Asus tbh.
