[Q] Rooting & Unlocking, a bit confused? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hello
I've recently purchased a Transformer Prime, and this is my first non-HTC device (I've had the HTC Desire, Desire HD and now EVO 3D), so I'm familiar with Android and such, just not with tablets or Asus.
My Prime came preinstalled with Honeycomb (Android-version 3.2.1) & Kernesystem 2.6.23.3 [email protected] #1 & Versionnummer HTK75.WW_epad-8.8.3.33-20111223.
And it currently has a system update available which I haven't installed.
I'd like to end up with being updated to ICS (4.0.3 is the newest I believe?) with the newest updates, while having root. I don't wish to put custom ROM's on my tablet, I would still like to have it rooted though, so I can use Titanium Backup, SetCPU, AdFree, RootExplorer and such other root applications.
I've read a bit around, and it seems that there is no way to root .21 update, so I'll have to root it first, then use OTA rootkeeper (don't know the program/app, just remember the name from another thread) and then update my Prime?
Will I be able to keep taking OTA's even if I have Root, just by using the OTA RootKeeper?
And finally, what is the difference between Root and an unlocked bootloader? What can't i do without unlocked bootloader?
I hope someone can help me with this

You can still take updates while being rooted. If you want the latest update to be rooted, I'd recommend rooting while you're on HC, downloading Voodoo OTA Root Keeper, backing up root by selecting "protect root" or something to that effect, downloading and installing the OTA update, opening the Root Keeper app and clicking "restore root." It's pretty painless.
Root = enhanced permissions to run the applications you listed off.
Unlocked = ability to put a custom recovery on your device (ClockworkMod) so you can flash ROMs.

Thank you a lot for the information, very helpful
I do have 2 follow-up questions.
1)
Will the Voodoo OTA Root Keeper also work when updating from my current HC -> ICS, and not just when updating from (for example) ICS 4.0.2 -> ICS 4.0.3 ?
2) Which root method would you recommend? I see a few different ones in the development forum, but some might be better than others

Rootkeeper should keep your root, and i used vipermod. I think thats what it's called

ViperMod seems pretty straight forward, so I'll try that
Did you root HC with that, or ICS?

I rooted ics But before .21 you may want to root on hc before doing the update because i think asus will send you the .21 update

Crap. I just got my Prime and let it update itself to 21. Something told me I should've read up on rooting first.

I personally used the manual version of Tacoroot as soon as it was released, where you have to type in all of the commands and junk lol. The methods seem to have gotten way easier, but I haven't tested them out myself. I've heard good things about both ViperMods and Tacoroots automated rooting methods though.

New Prime Question - protecting root from HC

Just received my Prime and I'm about to take it off its first charge.
I assume it will be on HC and will to start to update straight away.
Can I just check that if I get root in HC that will be preserved when I update to ICS with OTA Rootkeeper?
Will I need to apply a new root under ICS?
Thanks. Have looked for an answer but not yet found one and am worried because of the new OTA update
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Yes, you should root in HC as the first update you download will be firmware 9.4.2.11 and you cannot root that version yet. Once you are rooted download OTA rootkeeper and open the app and touch preserve root or whatever the option is. Then do the OTA update. Then go back into OTA rootkeeper and reapply the root.

Yes. It is an upgrade and not a fresh install.

Just make sure you download OTA Rootkeep and open it and preserve your root before updating to ICS and you are good to go.
When you say "can I apply the same root" You aren't really re-rooting it the same way you did the first time...you are simply restoring the root with the Rootkeeper app.
Thanks - root and rootkeeper applied - upgrading now!
Edit: have just updated and the new version is 9.4.2.7! Obviously the new update hasn't hit yet.

[Q] ics and ota rootkeeper

if ics is coming out soon i need to be prepared,i can't seem to find out if ota rootkeeper will save root on my razr xt912,also if it can save me do i do temp un root or just leave alone.......................i have been following threads that say to temp unroot ,is this just for people wanting ics early
With past OTAs I just used OTA root keeper to backup root, applied the OTA, then restored root through root keeper app. Should work the same way with the ICS update. I've never had to use the temp unroot function.

What to do with OTA update 1.3.418.en.US?

This morning my phone starts to pop up OTA update message to 1.3.418.en.US every 2 hours. I recently SBF'ed back to 2.3.4. That's probably the reason. HOwever, I am no pageplus, not on Verizon, not sure why I get this update though.
Regardless, should I update? will this screw up my root privilege? As a software developer myself, I am very reluctant to do any necessary update. I know how much bugs we generate with new code So is there a way to bypass/deactivate the update?
You should use Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper from the market on 2.3.4 to keep root and upgrade. It will alike for you to have the newest kernel.

Can I remove this APP after the upgrade?
I tried to have my phone rooted and use voodoo, however the update wouldn't install when I done that so I am now on 1.3.418 w/o root.
Just sbf back and try again.

Lost root after the last update from htc

Lost root with the latest update from htc that fixed Google Wallet. Anyone else?
I only want to root to have tethering but I don't want to flash custom roms.

rule of thumb is to never accept an ota if you want root
I wasn't planning on rooting when I accepted the update but now I do lol. Does anyone know how to root it after the update or at least when it will be made available?

You never accept an update If you are rooted or ever plan to root.
You cannot gain s-off with the newest update, but can still do HTC dev
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Thankfully, with HTC Dev, we'll pretty much always have the option of rooting regardless of update.
Yes, but I believe with the new hboot 1.15 there's no more flashing kernals, radios, or splash screens........ouch
My EVO Ways
the only thing u cant do if u took the update is u cant get s-off at this time.. u can still use all the other root tools... :good:

Radios and splash screens.. oh well. Not a big deal.
And kernels.. well, my views on kernels aren't popular so I will keep them to myself.
I really dont care to have S-OFF. I just want root access for tethering. I had the Old Evo 4G and I spent hours and days flashing roms and it was addictive! I just dont want to teak this LTE. To me ICS is working fine and I dont want to be hooked again of flashing, Nand backups and such.
I just want a safe way to re gain root, for Tethering. again I dont care about Bootloader or S-OFF.
Any input will be appreciated.
I made a topic on why you root and it got closed.. same reasoning I'm hearing about is why I wanted people to fully be aware this isn't the evo og and rooting could be bad this time

HTC Dev
Question guys, you can use HTC Dev for the Evo but you won't get S-OFF, what does that mean.
Can I still flash Radios, Modems, and can I tweak with msl reader like the old EVO.
Also has anyone found a root method post Google Wallet Update from July 11th. I decided to update because I was not rooted yet, but now I want to root.
Aw man, I'm a new member at xda, just got on the forums when I got my EVO LTE. I've been trying to lurk and read up but unfortunately never came across somebody saying I shouldn't accept OTAs... I was gonna wait until cm9 or aokp got a bit more stable to root and flash. What have I lost the ability to do by accepting this update?
Edit: nevermind, looks like I'll have to wait until root methods are updated, and possibly wait for another s-off exploit if if comes. Can't flash radios or kernels... Damn...

I'd imagine that it won't be long before someone comes out with an updated root method. Be patient, read and ask questions in the meantime.
If you are S-ON and rooted then you update with the new OTA can you still root the phone again?
I was rooted only and accepted the update. No longer have root access. I saved w voodoo root keeper, but it couldn't restore root after update. Figured that would happen just wanted to try it.
Also after the update, my clock speed only throttles down to 1ghz. Anyone else noticing this? Talk about a battery killer!
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
Edit: Scratch that 1ghz thing. Think maybe my widget was freaking out. Seems to be fine now. I was pissed at first too!
First rule of XDA is you don't accept OTA updates for any reason.
Just my 2 cents...I made the mistake with my OG EVO and had to wait for unrEVOked to be updated.

Is it possible to use someone else backup 1.31 the previous build when being rooted. I want revert back to the previous build. I'm on the latest update. The reason why i ask this is I want to go back to stock using Ruu.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Here man....it's a super quick process. Just copied and pasted from another thread....
I took the OTA and I'm rooted again.... It's not even that difficult.
I wanted google wallet and I wanted it bad! So I ran thru the hastle of hacking Google wallet so I could get into settings and clear it. Then HTC re-locked my phone. Ran the RUU, then accepted the OTA.
After you've updated...
Run the HTC unlock. Instructions at HTCdev website.
Then flash TWRP (I used adb fastboot method):
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/98
Once that's installed you can flash supersu via this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1538053
Find: CWM installable ZIP in the OPs sig block (it works fine with TWRP on 1.22 software)
From there I just installed busybox (by Stepen) via the market. Grabbed Titanium Backup, and here I am. Rooted phone with 1.22 stock ROM.
Not all of the old mods work anymore though. My favorite, which was the battery mods, don't work. They don't even come close to working, so make sure you nandroid backup before you start tinkering..
I'm rooted but my phone is acting weird after using the HTC unlock method with the latest update

[NOTICE] To Prime Users about JB root

Just a heads up that from looking around it seems there is no root method on the new Jellybean Firmware that does not require a bootloader unlock, so if you are a user that does Not want to unlock their BL and still keep root, don't take the OTA.
The update broke the symlinking method found by Wolf, and I think that was the only working one. Correct me if I am wrong c:
Also, Can someone (Preferably one who doesn't care about bootloader unlocking) please confirm if the OTA rootkeeper works? (Voodoo)
ToD
Also posted in TF300t fora.
Are there any ways to root the latest JB?

If you unlock bootloader yes.
Upgrading from ICS to Jellybean, even while using Voodoo OTA rootkeeper, broke my root.
Although I might have done something wrong, I thought I had done it right, as I had used Voodoo when applying an upgrade to ICS at somepoint in time. That time worked flawlessly.
Since then, I have unlocked my bootloader and cannot be happier! There's work by great people on this forum into custom roms & kernels. Even some very close progress to a fully functional ARM linux, which I am especially excited for; I tried some of the original versions and it was quite impressive. Recovery projects (Im using TWRP) are also very, very, handy to have!
If you're in doubts, here's one anecdote to going beyond root, and unlocking your bootloader. It was worth it for me!
Did the OTA update to JB couple weeks ago and lost root (and rootkeeper backup as well). Now unlocked the BL and using energy rom. glad I did the unlock.
I rooted all the way back on Honeycomb, now on the latest stock (4.1.1), not unlocked, and still rooted (via Voodoo OTA RootKeeper)
At the time, OTA rootkeeper was able to restore my root when upgrading from ICS to JB (since then I've ROMed up).
Perhaps it was because just before the update I deleted the rootkeeper backup and re-created it.
