S2 great baseband but no GPS - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a new S2, already running the latest CM9. I've changed the radio to XXKE7 and got great results in both reception and battery life. However GPS isn't working for me (as far as I can tell with the Waze app).
I really don't want to change the modem. Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot?
Thanks.

Same modem?

Have a look at the AGPS patch thread link in my sig. Worked well for me before GPS was fixed in CM9 recently.

I don't get it. Does the modem/baseband has anything to do with the GPS?

Good question.
Most of what I've read on here/elsewhere suggests GPS is affected by modem. However, I'd love to have confirmation of that/explanation of why it does or doesn't from a dev. I did manage to find a post or two on various Android forums suggesting modem doesn't affect GPS performance as well.
TBH, whenever I've tested modems, my focus has always been on data speeds & signal strength. I've never tested how well (or not) GPS works when I've tested modems.

Just tried it, couldn't get it to work for me.
What do you mean by "GPS was fixed in CM9 recently"? I'm running the 26/03/2012 version, and on GPS Status I see one sat in view, and it's not in use.

Try the Codeworkx build from 31 March on the first page of the CM9 discussion thread. He fixed it in his build (not the nightly) from 30 March (which I'm running), GPS works flawlessly inside & out. Not sure if the fix is included in the official 30 March build on CM website (probably not) but if you run that Codeworkx build from 31st, be prepared to be pleasantly surprised (video recording fixed too).

Which ICS ROMs work with Onavo?

I learned about the Onavo app which is supposed to compress data, thereby increasing the amount of data we can use in a data plan. But it doesn't work with my Serendipity 9.4 ROM.
Has anyone successfully used Onavo with any of the ICS ROMs available?
Mystic's Glory
Shostock
Shishir
Phone-Bricker

Thanks!

While I have you, do you find Shostock stable? Any bugs? I read something about a GPS issue.
BTW, what will be interesting?
Thanks for the feedback.

I use it on Shostock. Works great.
AFA the GPS issue. It's sort of a non-issue. For most it works. For some it's fixed by swapping modems. For some it's fixed by swapping kernels. For some it's fixed by installing a fix posted by nosferatu. But like I said for most people GPS works great.
Other than that, pretty much zero issues on 3.1.2. Awesome ROM. I can get 3 days standby time or be at about 40%ish battery at the end of the day with about 3hrs of screen time.
I'd suggest the usual when installing.... Wipe(if coming from different ROM or below 3.x.x), Clear cache, davlik, jivy kernel cleaner, fix permissions in that order.
Useless post here: I use Onavo on my iPhone. Lol

I'm interested in Onavo Extend as it is supposed to enable you to get much more data out of your data plan due to data compression.
I tried using Onavo on Shostock and several other ICS ROMs and it didn't work on any of them. I need to do some research to figure out why.

Any daily driver other than Froyo?

Hi,
I'm using TeamWhiskey Froyo Rom and wondered if there is a later version that is recommended as daily driver. I see there are plenty of 4.x roms, but anyone is stable and good enough to replace the Froyo?
Thx.

Pick anyone, it's better for sure. I use Kingsoft Miui on Semaphore kernel, I know it's way better than Bionix 1.3.1 or Biwinning or no matter what Froyo you can think of. Go ahead, it's time to upgrade.
+1, all of the 4.1.2 ROMs , IMO, are stable. There has been great progress with GPS in these ROMs as well. Upgrade, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
I am Jack's smirking revenge.
Thx guys, I'll try to upgrade, got bored already with Froyo...

Ok, so I installed Slim Bean, really like it so far! Can't believe it's the same phone... Though I have some battery issues, need to check that, seems to be draining fast, I suspect the gps is keeping the system awake all the time, I remember it was an issue on ics roms...

And also uninstalled the GPS Status app I had, it seemed to be interrupting the gps from working well. That's it, hope all problems are gone now...

Be warned that gps fixes that replace blobs can mix badly with emergency dialing and can cause intermittent (and in at least one case constant) RIL crashes when dialing an emergency number.

Also intermittent means it could work 90% but crash 10% of the time, so one test may not be conclusive. But frankly, I'm not sure if SlimBean uses the right libraries in the first place. prbassplayer/kravind can correct me if I'm wrong though.
How a 911 call is different from a regular call anyway? Why if regular numbers are working 911 won't?

Samsung used a special RIL request code for emergency numbers, so when we detect an emergency number, we use that code. When it does an emergency call it uses a command related to GPS and if the GPS libraries are out of whack, then the RIL can crash or receive corrupt GPS readings.
And also, 911 has to work even if no SIM card is present.

Ahhhhh, seems like the wake lock problem haven't gone away... It depends on how I reboot my phone, also I'm still unable to get a GPS fix.
I think this is the last Samsung device I'll bought, instead of making new devices every 3 weeks it would be better if they actually supported their devices by updating the os for instance...geeee.

Try CM10 nighty, and activate GPS for a minute right after boot if you want GPS after deep sleep.
Hi,
I could get a fix with my Nexus 7 device, is there a way to copy that "fix data" to my Vibrant device? maybe this will help it get a lock?
Thx!

I don't think that's possible since you change your location.
You can use an external GPS which will surely provide a better lock than the internal GPS.

You're using a Vibrant 4G / Galaxy S 4G not a Vibrant. The V at the end of the model number shows that.

To funny cuz if you go to the cyanogenmod website and click the Vibrant it shows cm10 stable rom that i linked... And FYi i have a vibrant as well... Just sayin browski. Because rhe sgs4g and vibrant are two similar devices but different flavor. The sgs4g doesn't even have the support the Vibrant has when it comes to Cyanogenmod.

[Q] gps on CM10.1-20130105-nightly-vibrantmtd on T-Mobile SGH-T959

Hello,
I am loving my phone now in every way except 1.... gps is not working. I tried everything I could think of...
installing and configuring for ntp, installing the gps patch "agps.patch.google.build.cwm.v3.1.zip", but I never get a lock.
I read on some forum that nightlies may not even have the gps driver configured. Is that true for cm10.1? How can I tell?
I have looked through the changelog of nightlies since mine but none mention anything about gps.
Can anyone tell me how to get the gps to work?
Thanks for your help,

gps question for those running cm10 1-13-13 nightly or stable build

simple question for anyone running the stable build or the newest nightly of cm10...does gps (navigation work). i had jellybam and it was fantastic for me, but when i tried navigation it would work for 1 minute, then freeze and crash (same thing happened with telenav). so i had to come to sense, but sense is annoying me because every time you switch between apps, it has to reload the app when you open it back up.
so if your navigation is working for you, please let me know, im interested in running cm10 as my daily driver.

I'm not currently running it, but I was and had no issues with gps which I use regularly.. From what I understand if u have any issues all u have to do is back up cm10, flash a sense rom and make sure u have a good gps lock, restore cm10 backup and should be good to go.. Good luck and enjoy your super speedy rom..

Did you try clearing the GPS settings through the dialer on a sense rom?
You'll need your msl # to do it. I'm also not sure of the dialer code. You'd have to look it up.

Need Help: CM 10.2 w/WIFI & LTE issues

I'd like to first of all thank the CM guys for a great ROM - I'm a skeptic, but I really like it, nice work.
So far everything works on this ROM except I have two nagging issues:
1) My WIFI constantly cycles on and off - that's a deal breaker, I use my DNA alot online for work.
&
2) My LTE signal is much weaker now. Instead of the usual 4 bars at the office, I get 2.
Any help would be fantastic.
The CM 10.2 that I've loaded is: 10.2-20131014-NIGHTLY-dlx
Thanks so much.
CM reports false radio info. It should be the same as long as recent radio's are installed..
I spent a lot of time researching - and taking pot shots from some of the devs about not installing NIGHTLY ROMs on my daily phone.... and finally decided to go with a prime time ready ROM. So I installed ViperDNA, it's perfect so far.
Thanks for the help folks.

I've had similar problems with the radio and WiFi in CM10.2 nightlies. Ended up installing Viper Sense 5 just to get to 4.2. Sense 5 is horrible but I don't want to go back to 4.1 so I can't wait to see a working AOSP ROM.

Still on ViperDNA. I really like this ROM, only have the one Skype audio issue right now, other than that it's 100% (okay, so it's 99%) lol.

2. What can I do to have the actionable email notification, i.e. the ability to delete email when I pull down the notification bar?
