Hello all XDA users,
Many apologies for the noobish questions, I am new to this forum and this is my first time posting. Although a first time smartphone owner, I decided to be brave and attempt to root and flash my phone, which worked fine under Gingerbread until I wanted to upgrade to ICS. I have a International GT-I9100 SGS2 purchased in Singapore. I rooted it by installing a custom kernel and flashed a new Lite'ning Rom V3.2 with Gingerbread.
In order to upgrade to ICS, I tried through KIES and the "Software Update" function to no avail. I then tried to do so manually but Odin would not complete the process with the original I9100XWLP3 rom I downloaded on this site. I left it running on my computer for 2 hours only to come back home with the progress incomplete.
My questions are:
1) I live in Taiwan now. My other friends who purchased their SGS2 locally here all have gotten ICS through KIES. Am I unable to do this because I purchased it from Singapore and must wait for the Singapore rom to be uploaded? Is there no way for me to flash to the local Taiwanese I9100ZSLPE rom?
2) How long does an ODIN flash take to complete? Should I be more patient and waited longer than 2 hours for it to finish?
3) Does KIES no longer recognize my phone because I rooted it? It always fails to download the driver whenever I plug in my phone. Do I need to unroot to an official ROM such as I9100XWLP3, and then download through KIES to get ICS, or is I9100XWLP3 already packed with ICS?
Again, many apologies if these questions are elementary in nature, and thanks in advance for the help. Attached you will find a picture of my phone's current firmware state.
[1) you must be on a stock rom as your friends had, since you have rooted and installed a custem rom, keis will not recognize your phone. you can flash it from ODIN also, if you really need official update from Kies, you want to flash the same stock ROM your friends had in their mobile at your region...
2) Maximum 5 minit, something wrong with your connection, it is strange finally you got installed after 2 hours waiting...
3) same answer as #1, + you dont need to unroot, mere rooting will not effect Keis update, XWLP3 is an ICS rom
Should I perform a full wipe before upgrading my rom?
Thanks for your response, all the way from Kuwait. I backed up most of my files via Titanium backup. Should I now perform a factory reset before upgrading to ICS? Wouldn't the factory reset also wipe out my Titanium backup, or is this somehow protected? Do I need to transport my backup to my pc first? I tried to backup via kies, but the driver issue prevented my phone from being recognized.

on which firmware are you currently?
it is always good idea to transport to PC your back-up, even wiping and factory reset will not touch your own stuffs on SD card, also while you are flashing a ROM from ODIN and CWM.
also take care when you restore your backup from tintanium, uncheck all the system data, it will mess up your phone, if you had made the backup from a GB Rom, install only user applications.
Your backed up data will be on the SD card a folder named Titanium backup, you only need to download the application titanium backup from market, after rooting your phone.
Edit : sorry I did not notice your picture uploaded, that means your attempt on ODIN did not do anythig and luckly it did not hurt phone too, I think your PC connection or driver is not proper....google more about usage of ODIN....

Yoo,
Ive rooted my sgs2 a few weeks ago, I tryed to make a backup with Titanium backup. Im able to make a backup from my apps but im not able to make a backup from all my systemdata.. This sucks since I cant upgrade to the next firmware update. Im not sure if I need a backup to update through kies or odin..
Got any advise for my problem?
Thx in advance!
What you mean you cant not upgrade to the next firmware update.
Offical update download Kies now or sometime soon so you have the latest build once installed connect fone via usb cable check for firmware.
Or download firmware links within this forum and upgrade via Odin.
Just make sure Kies is not running in the back ground if using Odin and you may also want to disbale firewalls/antivirus...
If you follow set info laid out when flasing you apps /photos etc contacts should still be fine
Well my question is, im rooted and I have a stock rom, probably exactly the same as before but its flashed.. and if I update through odin it will wipe all my data.. thats what I heard. But update through kies idk if thats possible since I have a stock rom and does it also wipe data?
, I just tested updating through kies but thats impossible, it doesnt recognize my phone. So the only way to update my firmware is through Odin, and ive heard it will wipe data.. and since I cant make a backup with Titanium backup im screwd o_o
Got any solutions?
Can someone confirm they have managed to successfully flash in Mobile Odin? Coming from GB are there issues to upgrade this way?
I have the firmware downloaded and unzipped on the INTERNAL memory, does it need to be in an external? Also... I have 3 files...
GT-I9100-MULTI-CSC-OXALPJ.tar
I9100_CODE_I9100XXLPJ_CL140368_REV02_user_low_ship.tar
MODEM_I9100XXLPJ_REV_02_CL1105553.tar
Im unsure of the process and where they should go. Ive heard of people flashing in multiple fields. Could someone please explain for my particular query? Thanks

I flashed LPQ using mobile Odin, but needed to do a wipe after the fact to stop a bootloop.
If you just load the files into Mobile Odin it'll put them where they're supposed to go, IIRC (I used the single file ROM, and it just filled everything in).
make sure you want to upgrade/flash xxlpq. i did and it works fine, but:
when charging, no flashing of lightning bolt in batt icon, drive and walk gone, voice search gone, touch screen not as responsive as with 2.3.4/5, it seems as if the phone slower and sluggish.
Flashing Upgrade
Hi. I'm a beginner. But I've flashed a few times some custom ROMs on my Galaxy S2 and every time they were successful. I always follow the instructions properly.
My question is : Can I flash the ICS XXLPQ (on top of Gingerbread 2.3.6 XWKL1 baseband DDKL1, kernel 2.6.35.7-i9100XWKL1-CL809037 [email protected] #2) , and keep all my old apps that I already have installed, just like it hapens if you update the firmware through Kies?
I don't want to backup anything using any tools to backup apps. Just want to mimic the Kies update, where you don't have to backup your apps manually and you still wouldn't lose them during the upgrade (if nothing odd happens!).
Thank you for your help.

flashed my sister's phone using odin and DXLP7 from DXKL3, and worked great, didn't even wipe data.
i did however wipe data on mine, since im using a MIUI. (flash using mobile ODIN)
GB 2.3.6 to ICS with Mobile Odin not successful
Hi, my SGS2 is currently on I9100DXKL3 (flashed via mobile odin) and rooted.
I downloaded I9100DXLP9 and used the usual way I did before in mobile odin (v 2.35) to flash i.e. Picked the file from internal memory, ticked on Everyroot, Inject etc...all the check box and clicked flashed. Mobile Odin ran the verification check file and than it just stops, it didnt hang, it just stops after running everything but it's didnt boot into recovery.
Is there anything I did wrong ?
Hi all,
Complete noob question warning, I've searched but not found the answer. I installed the latest official firmware from Samsung using Kies and it appeared to work but the phone is now buggy. It crashes to black screen and drops service, then reconnects to the network and scans the SD card again, and has done this mid call. Is there any way of rolling back or re-installing the firmware without rooting etc? Kies just says the latest firmware is installed.
Thanks
Neil
Odin is the program you need to Flash stock samsung roms, samfirmware is the place where you get them.
Look through the post tutorial on how to use Odin for ace in this very Forum, I don't know if there is a way of flashing the desired firmware with kies.
You don't need root to do it, but its recommended because flashing with Odin WILL WIPE YOUR STUFF, so having root and a backup with Titanium backup is very handy.
Pd: root it, I don't know anyone who's sorry after rooting.
You could go into recovery Mode.
Reboot and hold the middle button.
Then wipe data factory settings (It will deleted everything) Exept SD. and its like it was installed for the first time.
When I first got my S2 I rooted it to remove some bloatware like orange backup and maps. I was looking to also remove the orange startup and shutdown logos but never found how to do this. Now I want to undo all I've done (not much really) and put it all back the way it was.
Having searched the webs I find all the results about flashing using Odin to a new custom ROM, but I'm sure this is not what I want to do.
I am sure I made a backup of the original files but I can't find them anywhere on my computer. However, I have managed to find some files I must have originally used to root/flash.
Odin
S2Root 1.4.3
GT-I9100_XXKG3_insecure
GT-I9100_XXKG3_original
I have rebuilt my computer since I originally rooted my handset, so when I needed the drivers and installed Samsung Kies it told me I had an update to ICS. I've completed this but Sky Go is still saying my device is rooted and will not work. I've downloaded and tried superoneclick (latest version) but this crashes every time. Opening S2Root, which I'm assuming I used originally, and trying to Unroot it tells me my device is not rooted and aborts the operation.
How can I fix this now?
Thanks in advance

Hi there,
The best way to get your phone back to stock is to wipe cache and dalvik cache and do a factory reset.
This will bring everything back to how it was and you will lose root you can use Astro to back up all your apps and take screenshots of home screens so you can get it back to how it was.
I see you have the Original Kernel file still XXKG3, you can simply flash this through odin back to your phone and you will lose root access and be back to how it was before root. Just open Odin and flash this file in the PDA section of Odin and hit start
Or you can flash an official stock Samsung ROM using Odin..
If you let me know where abouts you are I can send you a link for the appropriate firmware ie Orange carrier branded official firmware, as released by Orange
Also is it Gingerbread or ICS you were wanting to revert to?

Factory reset and wipe cache will never remove root
There are many ways, but for a complete reset to stock, only way is format /system, wipe data and cache, then flash a stock rom in odin. Before, use triangle away to reset counter if needed

Thanks for the replies guys.
I have flashed using kies with the latest orange update so this is what I would like to keep. I want to go back to keeping it original as possible (couple more months and I'm due an upgrade and will be selling this)
Ok so going by Phil's process I need to format system? How do I do this?
Wipe data and Cache I think these two are options in Odin right?
Flash a stock ROM? I have that GT-I9100_XXKG3_original that I must have downloaded when I rooted it, will this do or do I need a different ROM?
If you can fully explain this in a step by step guide with using the ROM I already have, then I can simply connect kies and let it update to latest firmware?
Also, what is triangle away and will I need that? I thought if I flashed to original ROM in the steps said above I shouldn't get that yellow triangle?
Why would I need to reset counter?
I am a complete noob at this and appreciate all the help you are giving me.
Thank you
PS. Obagleyfreer can you post a link to the latest Orange ICS firmware just in case I need that too? Thanks
Having done some more googling I found the clear data and cache is when you put the phone in download mode (volume down+home+power buttons). This is also where I can factory reset the phone. I found this on youtube and the video didn't clearly show what options and folders to select if any. So, can you tell me exactly what options and folders to select please?
I'm assuming the above is my first step, then flashing a new stock ROM. Can you post a link to this please?
The video on youtube showed the yellow triangle went away after doing the flash, but he also had a little usb stick which reset the counter. Is there a way I can do this without that usb thing-ma-jig?
What's the best way to backup all my contacts?
Just do what Phil says.Triangle away is an app to remove traces that the phone has been tampered with,as that can invalidate warranty. You need to learn about cwm and Odin.

I don't know all the steps and exactly what to do, otherwise I would give it a ago. If there is a step by step guide to this, then I'd be more than happy to try it on my own without any questions.
Telling me to format system and flash I don't fully understand some points about this process, hence why I asked for more details, like what options do I chose and what folders do I select? You're asking me to go do something without giving me all the variables, would be like you giving a kid your bank card with pin and asking him/her to take some money out. If you don't tell the person the amount, then what's to stop the kid from completely emptying your account? Same principle applies to my situation, you have told me what to do but not given me all the details I need, so I could simply go and format the entire phone and go through every option and selection without knowing what's its doing and if it's the correct thing to do.
Before you telling me the triangle away is an app, I thought Phil was just telling me to get rid of the Triangle I never knew it is an app, so you see, you provided a final bit of information and now I know what this is, I can go and look for it (google ofcourse), once found I will try it, but post back if I have any questions. Such as, do I use this app first or is it the last thing I do.
I am a complete noob at this and details matter loads to me. Being a computer enthusiast building my own computers, I know every little detail counts when it comes to software/firmware settings. So, try to understand all your help is really appreciated and much needed information before I can start off on my own.
Thanks for the read.
Wipe data and cache is done in stock recovery options as you found, not in download mode
Format /system needs cwm. You can get it flashing a cf root kernel in odin. Another way is to get a temporary cwm like in the link in method 1 from my signature. Once in cwm, go to advanced or partition settings and you find the format /system.
Triangle Away is an app that needs root to run

Hi,
Firstly I apologise if this has been covered before but I have searched and searched and still not found what I am looking for.
I received the OTA update for my Galaxy S3 I-9300 ( UK Version on O2 Carrier, Stock ROM), phone downloaded automatically (all good), clicked install when prompted (i believe this was a relatively small update file). I presume the phone was running 4.2 when I decided to update and this was the update to 4.3 (not sure). The phone started the firmware upgrade process all went well, the % got to 100 and the phone went to reboot. But when the phone went to reboot it stuck on the blue Samsung logo screen. Left it for a couple of hours just in case, no joy.
Having not backed up all before doing the update (as usual presumed it would be fine) I now am in the situation where I may well lose all my data, this at the minute is my LAST option. Have a few fairly valuable things on this eg. notes from meetings etc. and some photos I would like. So a factory reset from recovery mode isn't what I want to do at the minute.
I have tried to recover the phone using Samsung Kies, no joy again. With the state the phone is in it wont recognise the device and keeps bringing up an error with the USB MTP driver (have tried reinstalling the driver many times). When i put the phone into download mode (volume down, home and power) it says on Kies it is connecting, but again fails to connect. It seems the last option I am left with is to use the 'update via external storage' mode when in recovery or the 'update via ADB'? I have also tried contacting both O2 and samsung to see if they can provide me with the firmware update file that I can download and put on an SD card, but they both keep sayin each other is responsible for the firmware etc etc. I have since downloaded a rom from Sammobile.com and found a UK 4.3 rom to be installed via ODIN (not sure if this will work?)
So, I am wondering if there is any way I can recover the data from the device without losing both app data and photos/videos etc that I have not yet tried? or if anyone can guide me as to where I could get the update file to use via external storage? (and if this will work) or if using the ADB function is a possibility (dont know what it is even) Any help is much appreciated as I seem to keep going round in circles, and apologies if I have not given vital information.
Thanks,
jjohnston890
If you don't mind losing warranty you can flash a custom recovery using odin, I'd recommend Philz, then use that to access the aroma file manager. You can then transfer all your data to the external sd.
Read philz thread for instructions.

Not really bothered about warranty as it seems that is the only way to get the data back. Although using aroma file manager am I able to get app data back? ie. when I restore the app do I have the option to do so with data? as its particularly a few notes in colournote app that I have.
Had a look for Philz Recovery, looks like it'll do the trick thanks, but could you link me just in case I've the wrong one please?

That is the Philz thread. Aroma file manager only moves files -it won't backup or restore anything. You will have to know which files to look for.

Ok, so I will want to move all files to the SD card and look for the app data files etc I need? how would I go about getting all my contacts aswell, can this be done through Aroma? Is this just a matter of searching through all files?
After installing custom recovery (philz) would I be able to flash the generic ROM (through ODIN) without wiping the phone? Or what are the chances this will brick the phone? Ideally it would be good if I could get the phone to the same state as it were in before the update, but I cant find if this is ROM is non wipe?? I would like to stick with the generic rom but if I had to re-flash after flashing a non wipe I could?
Again, apologies for the amount of questions but you seem to know your stuff :good: much appreciated
Contacts should be saved on your Google account, you will just have to search for anything else you need.
You can flash what ever you choose with odin, it's just highly unlikely to boot without a factory reset. First try the exact same firmware you had before the wipe, if you know it.
I'd advise you backup the efs folder in philz before you flash anything. If the dirty flash doesn't work then flash the latest BTU 4.3 firmware and factory reset.
I don't think a flash through Odin will wipe your internal SD. I believe it only wipes the data partition which stores thr app data and stuff. Pics and vids etc are safe. Changing CSC will wipe it though.

Contacts aren't saved on my google account, have them mostly saved on my phone just, so il have to have a good search through with aroma.
I found a post that said flashing the firmware I had before the update wouldn't work but the latest or a later version might...
Samsung are to get back to me in relation to giving me a downloaded version of the incremental update file, would anyone on here be able to provide a version of this do you think? in order to apply the offical update again via external storage.

So if i go from a stock rom with o2 branding to a non branded generic rom from samsung you think this will wipe it? (as this is a change of CSC?) is there any way to flash through ODIN and not wipe data partition either or is this the way it always happens?
Help/Advice
Was going to bite the bullet and flash custom recovery and flash the stock Samsung ROM through ODIN tonight, but it seems that if I do, it will change my CSC code? This as been told on here will wipe me phone. I am unable to get a stock O2 4.3 ROM at the minute but I can get a 4.1.2 ROM? Will this work is it worth waiting to see if I can get a 4.3 ROM soon and then if I flash this wont (hopefully :fingers-crossed wipe my phone?
Any advice appreciated. As stated before I cannot really afford to lose the data on phone (app data included )
Thanks

Your o2 4.3 rom is here, you will need to register to download, you can flash direct with Odin without a custom recovery, it wont wipe your phone, SAMMOBILE
If you want a generic one without o2 bloatware then use this one HERE

With custom recovery I tried to install but get the error message-
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Any ideas? Tried 2 different SD cards but didnt make a difference, although neither of these have been in the phone before?

If you downloaded a firmware from Sammobile.com then it will not be flashed with a custom recovery, go read the sticky guides in general on how to use odin.
You will still need to factory reset before the new firmware will boot, so use philz to remove all your files before you flash.
