Hello,
Since Google Maps and its navigation is still the best solution for walking navigation, it can sometimes be very hard to use it abroad since the user has to search for free Wi-Fi spots and must stay on the route. The pre-caching of the maps is only for the map-view and can be used for general orientation.
When I travel in Europe I sometimes need GPS navigation for walking that is 100% offline to avoid roaming charges.
Is there an app that can provide this other then Google Maps that needs data?
Can this thread please be moved to "Android General" or some other relevant forum?
I was unaware of the fact that this forum is for user-made apps.

Hey Gang,
Is there a plugin/overlay for google maps that will map where I have been. Be great when I am in the woods on my ATV
Hi There
Almost any/every gps application can record you route which you just then import into google earth.... It's just a matter of finding which one you prefer from the many hundreds of apps available.

I've used trackme and really like it. There are threads on here of his. Here's his website. You can download trips or make your own server and view it there.

You may also want to have a look at NaviComputer, in this same forum.
I agree
I have to agree that Navicomputer is the best general tracker. It may lack some of the more advanced features but is very quick and creating maps for it is very simple. Also you can create Open Street Maps and Virtual Earth Satellite maps. Out of all the programs I've tried, and I've tried a few (GPS Tuner, Navicomputer, Pathway) this is the best.
I have tried this one and it generates the kml for google earth

Try this BackCountry Navigator :good:
Since when does/can a unit based on Windows Mobile run an Android app, as this is the case with BackCountry Navigator ???
Hi,
I write on a little gps/google maps tool which I use for my running sport (something like MyTracks). Today Google anounced that the usage of the Google Maps API will cost when you are above a daily limit -> http://googlegeodevelopers.blogspot.com/2011/10/introduction-of-usage-limits-to-maps.html
In this blog and in the faq they are writing of websites and applications. Are applications = android applications? If this is true than it will be difficult to write a freeware app which uses Google Maps because the more users will be using this app the more you will pay. Even with a paid app you cant cover all the costs because you only get a one time a payment from a user but if your app exceeds the limits you have to pay google on a daily basis.
I hope I just missunderstood this blog post or the Google Maps API within Android isn't affected.
What do you think?
Seems unlikely that an Android app (assuming counted by a single app usage, not by everyone using the app at any given time) could exceed 25,000 map loads per day, but then I've never counted map loads... if that is a possiblity, then this is really going to suck the wind out of google maps!
Then again, I've always wondered when Google was going to start charging for services that have become exceedingly popular.

Huh lufc,
why do you move this thread? The normal user don't have a problem if the developer have to pay or not. It's only a developer thing/problem, imho. But ok, it's your decision.
I have been searching for gps/navigation applications that support offline usage, aka installing maps on the device where no internet is required for the application to work..
I found NavFree USA, which apparently supports offline mode.
Is this a good GPS application?
If you have any other you think is good/better, please list them. Paid applications or not. NavFree USA does not require a payment to install; it is free.
Please comment the GPS/navigation applications you have had experiences with.
Thank you,

Never tried NavFree, but you could take a look at this, too:

It has a pretty good rating
I have tried NavFree for many months now, and I find it to be very good
I can highly recommend it to anyone who wants a offline GPS Navigation system.
Thanks, I'm on holiday now in the USA and this is going to very very handy, thought Google navigation would work with the maps cached but unfortunately not, still need a data connection for that.
Going to test Navfree today, hopefully won't get lost anymore!

Ever since Google started allowing offline maps (both in the old Google Maps incarnation, and in the current one), I have found that when I download a map section for offline viewing, often there are many details missing (small street names, for example).
Does anyone know if there's any way to make Google maps download map tiles to their maximum level of detail (the level you could get if you zoomed in all the way), including all street names? You'd think this would be a given, but it seems not to be.
Searching around for discussions of this, most articles and forum threads are just about tile caching in general, not level of detailed cached.

Hello Tim,when i travel long distances i use an app called locus,it has many options plus offline maps with details.
I want my phone to use cell towers (and GPS when I turn it on) to keep track of me so that if I give someone a URL, they will always be able to see where I am (approximately) on a Google Map.
It seems that Real Time GPS Tracker *kind of* does this, but it requires GPS to be on and not just cell towers. It also renders it on it's own iframed map, not a stand-alone Google Map.

Look up "Glympse" in the google play store.
Who do you want to share this with? If you trust them on your google account, google does it automatically.

I used Instamapper for years until it shut down. I *believe* this is a "rebirth" of the same service and app, but I am not 100% sure.
Was a great app, haven't tried the new one.
