Need some serious help with unrooting please! Nothing is working :( - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Hey there I got a nook Tablet (v1.4.2) it was rooted with Albertwertz method. Anyways after that I flashed CM7. Everything works fine the only thing is, I cannot get my books on there anyways, I forgot to backup before I flashed CM7. Well now I can't unroot it to take it back to out-of-the-box state which I really want to do. I tried flashing AdamOutler Stock Firmare but it didn't work. I also tried running the Unroot APK but it would just reboot back to recovery and then it would tell me that the APK had to force close. I really need help. I'm losing my mind Please someone help

If your tablet is 16 GB model as i think it is then flash any of the 1.4.0 roms posted in development section. Albert and i have posted them.
But if you have 8Gb model then you need to download the official firmware from B&N web page, cant give you a link right now but first let us know what model you have, you need to be carefull about what to flash if you have 8GB model.

Ah some how I got the UnRoot Nook apk to work by unselecting to "remember" when giving superuser authority. Well what I originally wanted was to have my Tablet rooted so I could download games with the Android market but still be able to have it as a reading tablet but when I rooted it I had to go back and forth between ADW launcher and the nook home. Is there anyway to have books on the tablet when I root it so I don't have to keep switching between launchers

Yes, root your tablet then download the nook app. It what I'm doing on my nook. Also if you use this method to root your nook library will be a pre installed app as long as you don't chose to delete it while in the rooting process.

Alright so I unrooted my nook and re-rooted it. Now i'm trying to use the method in your video, but I'm having a small problem. When I look click on my desktop to create a folder it doesn't work. It just exists out and doesn't create a folder or shortcut or anything.

Once in the drawer press menu button then you should see the option at the bottom so create a folder that's all. BTW my video is based on GO Launcher but still should be similar if you're using ADW launcher.

The second download link in the root thread is for the tgps _launcher.apk
Open it and you can change the settings there.
This is also where you click development and turn on the two USB debugging boxes and uncheck automount
most problems can be solved by doing a factory restore and try the rooting process step by step with the video without doing anything else.
Factory restore can be achieved by turning off device, and then hold both the N and the power button for 6 -10 seconds while turning on the tablet.
I used the second download link.. It downloaded TGPS.... Are there two TGPS download links?

Hello all, I am having trouble rooting my NT. I've rooted it before only once but I found out I was missing something so I decided to un-root by using Indirect's One click unroot. It completed, but I have been having trouble getting Nook&Zergy to run. It detects my NT as a device with a string of letters/numbers, but when I enter "y" for yes, it just prints some stuff out and automatically exits. Any ideas? I just got mine today and was so pumped, but this is really starting to get to me T_T...

Manual Nooter Sort of Works on 1.4.1

I'm looking a bit more at rooting via manual nooter on OS 1.4.1.
As of now, the Android Market is not working
In my hands, the BN shop is also not working. Books cannot be downloaded. (The reader does work, though, so you can shop and then download to your PC, then push the files in manually if you like.)
Together, those two elements not working argue against rooting 1.4.1 for anything other than study and development, I think.
- 1.4.1 installs on a device which had already been rooted (this device is rooted but not overclocked.)
- boot from a manual nooter 4-5-18 disks works
- after applying MN 4.5.18 and the APK enabler, the device booted. Root was retained and SU works fine (I was able to use adb wireless)
- install via ADB works
Other things to be aware of:
- this is not a Gingerbread release for the NC.
- the home button behavior is changed a LOT. Home Catcher for the Nook Tablet will also work here, though.
- the device automagically snarfs Google contacts if it's registered to a gmail address, it seems. There is no warning on that. I think that behavior is a Big Effing Problem.
About to try hopefully it works. I know I couldnt install update on 1.3 with CWM going back to complete stock and then update and then MN.
Yes, if CWR is written to your boot, you cannot install BN updates.
It might be possible to use a flashable 1.3 installer to write only /boot, reboot, then update to 1.4.1. I know there is a flashable 1.3, but I do not know where it lives.

It would be nice if some one conforms about Market
"It would be if some one conforms about Market"
Yeah, wouldn't it?
I'm figuring from the lack of screaming it's probably working.
Market is up. Some apps still missing. Having a bit of problem with Zeam launcher. Nook launcher is taking control.
Straight from my ICS i897 Sonic Screwdriver!!!!!
So from a rooted 1.3.1 you:
Use CWM to install a vanilla 1.3 ROM, then update to 1.4.1 via B&N download, then root using only 4.5.18? I seem to remember to root 1.3.1 you needed to root with 4.5.16 and then 4.5.18.
I have been able to use 4-5-18 without any problems on both 1.2 and 1.3.
You may not even need to install the vanilla ROM - you may well be able to install to a rooted device, so long as you have not meddled with /boot, either by installing a CWR boot internally or by overclocking.
My fast experiment this morning involved updating a rooted 1.3, then rooting that resulting 1.4.1.
Anyone check to see if it will still boot from an SD card, just want to confirm before update, but because it is still rootable I can always downgrade.
Edit: I am in the process of updating as I type this, I will post the results in case anyone else needs them.

In my case the Market runs but it's totally useless: I can't see my apps, it doesn't find most of what I want to install and when it does I can't install anything (it just goes back to the Apps menu). So it totally sucks since the B&N market is really lame!

For whatever reason, many Nook Colors that come stock with 1.3 installed just bootloop if rooted with 4.6.16, even if rooted first with 4.5.18. I can confirm this with a new NC purchased for my girlfriend's mom. Runs OK if just rooted with 4.5.18, except for it having the ancient market. Haven't been able to update the market yet, though gmail will update itself.
Updated to 1.4.1 (had to return to stock 1.3 to install the update, even without CWM flashed), using homecatcher to overcome the new "n" button "feature", but market is hit and miss. Was able to download and install Astro, but Titanium Backup doesn't want to download and install. I'll try sideloading it later.
What's the new n button feature? Is it possible to make a flashable update, like with 1.2 and 1.3?

If you press it once, it brings up the B&N "dock" that used to be at the bottom of the screen. If you press it twice, it brings up the B&N launcher.
Correction, I thought I was able to download Astro from market, but apparently I didn't. Now I've got no way to sideload apps, which makes this pretty useless...

I realize this, but this nook is a gift for my girlfriend's mom, who lives out of state, and I know there's no way she's going to sideload everything using ADB... I need to get her a working market, even if I've got to go back to 1.3 and disable the update.
Ended up using 4.5.18 on my stock 1.3 NC. ADB Sideloaded in the Kindle app and a couple others and used the Nook App Manager to drop icons out on the main stock launcher page. I was really looking to add teh Kindle app so I could read all my purchased books on a single device, so I'm quite content. I'd like to see better market, etc but it's not a dealbreaker for me.
Just in case someone follows this thread, rooted 1.4.1 is working well now. manualnooter-5-12-18.zip does it for ya.
Market works. You can add non-B&N apps to the B&N app and home screens using Nook Color App Manager. Putting the Kindle app on there is no problem. Netflix, HBO GO and Max GO work. Hulu Plus refuses to run on the device. B&N subscriptions download and update the dock. B&N enhanced content (e.g. Wired magazine) work fine.
If non-techie friends and family want an enhanced B&N Nook Walled Garden experience, this will do it!

After rooting and setting up my NT the way I liked (adding ADW Launcher, etc.), the Hulu app still ran, but it wouldn't let me log in (got some error about my device having "connectivity issues"). My solution? I used Titanium Backup to backup the Hulu app, and then I uninstalled it. Then I went onto the Android Market and downloaded/installed it (if it doesn't show up in the Market for you, know that I changed my build.prop to look like the DROID3). After that, everything ran smoothly. Hope this solution helps your slightly-different problem.
Nunspa, I think your right about having to unroot and start over again with rooting and not debloating. However, when I originally rooted I was watching the football game and missed a step. So I unrooted. But then my computer wouldn't recognize my NT. I spent days trying to get it to recognize it. I don't know if it was my dinosaur of a notebook. I eventually went to the second computer in my house and rooted it fine. I am afraid to unroot again for fear that that second notebook won't recognize my NT. But I am paying for Hulu Plus on my TV and it sucks that I can't see it on my NT. I was able to before I rooted.
Mattman1983, thank you for your suggestion. I did what you suggested and backed up with TB. But Hulu Plus doesn't show up in the market for me and I don't know how to change the build.prop and don't know the consequences of such a procedure.
I may eventually unroot again and start over if no one suggests a different way.
erpman,
The USB connectivity issue is tied to conflicting drivers, Thus the computer you preformed your root on should be able to re-root without any issues.
I have been considering re-rooting, and besides I'm eyeing the 1.4.1 rooting presented by DeanGibson..
Just have to back up my apps with TBA and I should be good to go, besides It's not like I have any "irreplaceable" items.. ya it's a pain, but may be worth it.
Nunspa, are you saying that I can reroot without unrooting first? I'm thinking that I have to unroot using indirect's unrooter which brings the nt back to stock 1.4 including the huluplus app. Rerooting without unrooting wouldn't bring me back to stock. Sorry if I'm not making sense. What's the benefit of the 1.4.1 root?
One method might be to use the 3 hulu+ titanium backup files from another device and restore them. This is how I got hulu+ to work on my Xoom. If someone wants to try that, here's a guide on how to do it.

Nooo you need to unroot, revert back to 1.4.0 and do it all over again..
you mentioned that you had issues with one of your computers recognizing your NT, that was due to conflicting drivers...
Titanium Backup method
So I used Indirect's method to root my gf's Nook tablet thus Hulu Plus remained. I have hence backed up the app and am attaching the 3 files from the backup. All you would need to do is place these 3 files in your titanium backup folder and then go into titanium backup and restore the app. You may need to restore app + data but I'm not sure.
If someone who used the full debloat root method could try this out and let me know how it goes, I'd appreciate it.

the power button function in buttonsavior is to lock the screen which for me its better

The lockscreen (which looks like a power button) doesn't work for me. When I try to activate it in the button savior settings, it force closes. I'm not exactly sure what a lockscreen function is. I just know the settings forcecloses when I try to acitvate it. I should probably stop these questions on this thread.

Meh , there is no option to activate lockscreen in button savior, by default locks the screen so you don't have press power button or wait 2minutes min to lock it. I moved the app to /system/app and have no problem.

Here's some steps I posted on someone elses topic. I know you said you did the reset but give it a shot:
If it comes to it, power down, hold power and 'n' and it'll turn on, then come to the black background with the n logo then power off. Release just the power button and press and hold again for 7 more times.
On the 9th time just use the power button to turn it on and it'll prompt you with some warnings. Follow through with the continue and it will perform the steps.
BE WARNED: this will perform a complete factory restore so any installed apps will be gone but it won't touch your SD card.

Use this method.
Just turn off the nook tablet, and start it by holding the power and N button. Continue to hold and you will note that the tablet turns on then off. Do this 8 times, and you will be promped for a full factory reset.

I was having difficulty following either method, but I came across the following link:

I followed these instructions which differ slightly, but was able to get a complete factory reset(re-image)...
I will now proceed to re-root my NT & hopefully won't run into any major issues...

Loglud/dodgepot - Thank you very much for your input...Much appreciated...
I was having difficulty following either method, but I came across the following link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19546639&postcount=13
I followed these instructions which differ slightly, but was able to get a complete factory reset(re-image)...
I will now proceed to re-root my NT & hopefully won't run into any major issues...
Will return if I do and/or have any questions...Thank you again...

Good luck in your adventures and don't be a stranger!
I posted the [How-to] Quick Access to Nook Tablet's FACTORY RESET Screen in both the General and Development sections of these forums just for these types of situations... a search would have netted you the link. Following that guide will get you back to stock.
Good luck.
O.K., I'm back to square one...I re-rooted my NT for the 4th time(followed Indirect instr. videos 1 & 2) and installed Honeycomb Launcher...After re-rooting I no longer have access to B&N's launcher...According to the video I should be able to flip-flop between B&N's launcher & Honeycomb Launcher by pressing the"n' button twice...If I open Apps. I can see the Apps. that came with my NT...From time to time I get the following error msg.: "The application Honeycomb Launcher (process mobi.SyndicateApps.HCL) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again"...
Any idea as to what is causing the above msg. and why pressing the "n" button is not allowing me to switch launchers?...I have other questions(e.g.; weather widget not working, how to move files around from-to SD card, etc..,..), but wanted to get past this issue first...Your help is greatly appreciated...
(I'm counting on dodgepot and/or Loglud to come thru again , or anyone for that matter...Again, much appreciate the help)...

there have been reports of honeycomb launcher force closing a lot. that is according to reviews from the android market...
the only suggestion i can give you is to move the honeycomb launcher apk to system/app if it is not there already
after that go to the tgps launcher and manage apps, try clearing data and cache for honeycomb launcher and reboot. hopefully after that you won't experience any more force closes for a while.
+1 I tried hcl a little and experienced issues so went to adw launcher ex. Much better, imho.

Do you know if you're using a modified SystemUI.apk? It sounds like you might be. There is one (that was not made when those videos were made) that removes the little B&N popup menu entirely. If you want that, you might need to revert to the stock SystemUI.apk.
The Home Switcher app will allow you to change your home button functionality as you like.
ENJOY!
Thank you all for your quick response...Much appreciate it...I apologize, but being a nubie & not that familiar with the terminologies I need some direction...
I recall that the last question during the rooting process had a reference to the
SystemUI.apk & required a Y or N response...I don't recall what I replied(Y or N)...Getting a little confused with the different options...
1- How do u move the HCL apk -> system/app?...
2- Why move the HCL apk -> system/app?...
3- How to access tgps launcher and manage apps, clearing data and cache for
HCL...
4- Should the HCL be uninstalled after performing the above followed by the
ADW Launcher EX install?...
5- Can I download(install) the ADW Launcher EX from the Android market?...
6. Once the ADW Launcher EX is installed how do I flip-flop between B&N
& ADW launcher?...
I read somewhere that to get rid of Honeycomb Launcher u can go to the Android Market > My Apps and click on HCL Launcher and then Uninstall...
And something about moving it 1st to /system/app rather than /data/app(???)...With all the choices getting confused with the proper course of action...Again, I would appreciate instructions for the best/quickest(safest) approach to correct this issue...
I really appreciate your willingness to help, not to mention that this is a learning experience for me and(hopefully) I will be able to help others as a result...
Many thanks...

Sounds like you entered Y. If you want to be able to switch between the B&N launcher and a custom launcher, you are going to need the stock SystemUI.apk.

You should be able to find it in /data/app. Move it to /system/app, and reinstall (and maybe reboot).

I think some believe this improves stability. However it prevents the market from updating the app. I use ADW EX and have not moved it and don't have any issues. I think HCL is pretty buggy (as has been stated above).

Use NT Hidden settings (look in dev forum) to manage applications. Select HCL from the application list and clear data/cache.

You don't have to, but you can if you want to.

Yes. EX is the paid version (well worth it IMO). There is a free version, but it hasn't been updated in a LONG time (in internet time).

Yes, you can do that.
Hit the THANKS button for those that have helped you [there are a few here] and to be honest, you're making this whole thing way more complicated than it needs to be. You really should learn how to use the XDA Forum SEARCH function more effectively so that you get better results for what it is that you're trying to do. As well, don't just hop on the first thing you find and try it without reading as much as possible about what it is that you're attempting to do. Also try to find corroborating information for that which you are attempting before attempting. Since you're new here, it can be a bit daunting but if you put a little effort into it, you'll find a lot of info and many people that will help you accordingly.
And Welcome to XDA Forums!
ckevinwelch - Many thanks for the quick & detailed response...
I've decided that I will unroot/re-root my NT & select ADW from the list of launchers...I will also pay closer attention to the question regarding SystemUI.apk at the end of the rooting process...If I understood u correctly, my response should enable the install of the SystemUI.apk, correct?...
After rebooting I should be able to switch between launchers(B&N - ADW) since the SystemUI.apk would have been installed, correct?...(I'm assuming this is done by double-clicking the "n" button)...
I'll also head over to the DEV Forum to read about accessing NT's hidden settings in order to access tgps launcher and manage apps, clearing data and cache, etc...
I'll post back here with the results...Thank you very much for your time and all the help...

If you want to keep the stock behavior (i.e. the little popup menu that would allow you to access the stock home), DO NOT let N&Z install a new SystemUI.apk. You want the stock one.
sounds like you are on barnes and noble home screen and cant change back. you can install anycut to access menu again to force change between launcher, or download a new launcher from the internet and this will force the choice again... or download the hijack adb app and use it to patch with nook zergy to install a new launcher... or download my sd card image file and it has all the apps there to install from... got videos on many of these things on my you tube channel... however, if you have removed the N menu and set barnes and noble home screen to your default launcher, you may not have access to a method to install another launcher except to manualy push it over using ADB and a usb cable. If you ar at this point and not comfortable with command prompts, then I would just do 8 factory restore and start over with the SD card I made... I even made a video of how to recover a failed root process with the sd card. it has all the files you need so you dont have to go all over looking for them.

Thank you albertwertz for the feedback...I decided to unroot/re-root and followed ckevinwelch' suggestion, i.e., did *NOT* let N&Z install a new SystemUI.apk. & keep the stock behavior...After rebooting my NT & selecting HomeCatcher & ADW launcher as default I can now bring up B&N's stock menu...I also got the weather widget to work properly(failing when running with HoneyComb launcher)...I really appreciate the time+patience you've put into helping me along...
I've also launched tgps_launcher to familiarize myself with the settings...One thing I noticed is that Auto Mount is flagged under Development, should it be(I recall I had to un-check it during the rooting process)?...
I did some navigating to familiarize myself with the settings, options,etc.,..
I also downloaded/installed/opened a game(Solitaire) to gauge the size of mem/storage utilized...I went back to tgps_launcher to get a list of the running Apps...I noticed that the Solitaire game was listed under the "On SD card" tab, however I didn't have an SD card installed at the time(box to the right was unchecked)?????????...
I stopped Solitaire, went back to my list of Apps & noticed that the Solitaire icon switched to the android icon...I tried opening it, but got some sort of error stating that it couldn't be opened so I ended up un-installing/re-installing...How do I determine if an Apps. is closed(not running) and what's the correct way to stop it and re-claim used memory/storage?...How do I move stuff around between data <-> system files?...
Again, many thanks(trying to get all my questions in as I learn more about this conversion)...

newbie question: how to load android apps on 8GB 1.4.2

I just purchases a Nook Tablet 8 GB with software version 1.4.2 I would like to load the Adobe Reader android app onto it. Since this is all I want to do, I imagine I would only have to root it, right? I have a linux box running adb so I would simply download the .apk and push it onto the rooted Nook, right? Is it this simple? Sorry for the noob question, I have a Droid X so I'm not new to Android, however, I've never worked with the Nook Tablet before.
EDIT:
I did some reading and found this thread... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529553 It looks like it is the only method available currently, right? The video example shows the OP using Go launcher ex as the launcher. The thing is, my wife likes the standard Nook interface so I'm hoping this can be kept. Also, this Nook is registered to my wifes Barnes and Nobel account. Will rooting deregister it? Thanks.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826 load cm7 on an sd card and go that route
edit: lemme explain a bit more.. you get the android system with no changes to your actual device so no warranty issues.. wanna go back to stock nook.. take out SD card and bam back to stock
For stock you will need to root to have access to Google play a.k.a "android market" and for sideload apps once you're rooted you need to download NT hidden settings (download from Google Play)and go to hack settings and hit Unknown Sources after that you will be able to open apps you download in your Nook Tablet or apps you have copied to your sdcard.

Thanks for the replies. Please excuse my delay in responding. I actually followed jichuan89 post in the link in my OP. It worked very well. It installed the market/google play and I was able to load apps. I kept the stock nook interface since my wife prefers it. The only downside I've noticed is that the apps installed from google play don't show up in the stock apps menu. You have to search for them. It's really no big deal, just thought I'd mention it. Anyway it's working great now.
@ lavero.burgos
I did not download the NT hidden settings that I noticed and I did not see any option for Unknown Sources. Maybe they installed with jichuan89's root method? I will check as soon as I can get the NT back from my wife . Also, I'm concerned about OTA updated from Barnes & Nobel. How can I disable this? Is that in the NT hidden settings somewhere? Thanks.
