I've had a consistent issue with not being able to download a purchased kindle book onto my nook color. It continually fails to download the book ("download failed"). After several calls to amazon, they do not seem to have found the issue. The odd thing is that I am able to download the book onto my macbook pro, my work laptop (windows 7 32-bit), and my samsung vibrant without issue. Has anyone else had this issue, and has anyone found a way to resolve this???
Edit: this is with a bought, drm'ed kindle book (topaz, if anyone is wondering). Free books from the kindle store download without issue.
Had a similar problem. Wiped the cache, uninstalled the app, re-downloaded from the market. Problem was solved.

Tried that already, reinstalling the app.

If you're still having problems you can do a forceful add of the books...there are two ways to do this. One is to put the micro sd card into your computer drag the book file into the kindle folder on the sd card (if there is no kindle folder just create one). You can also bump them over when adb'd. I also wrote a guide for how to do this with non downloaded books. Which would work as well but requires drop box and root explorer...though as my app has no problems whispersyncing I'm not sure if you did it this way if the books would continue to update your additions to them.
1) take the .mobi file or .azw file you want in your kindle app and put (or copy) it in your drop box. (I use calibre to edit the metadata/ add a table of contents if they are not already present before I move them).
2)Open dropbox app and download ebook. Then exit dropbox.
3) Open root explorer then to /sdcard/dropbox. Hit menu then multi-select, select the book (or books) you want to move and hit move. Go back to parent folder.
4) Go to the kindle folder (should be in /sdcard/kindle) you have to use the kindle folder on the sd card.
5) Click paste and exit root explorer.
6) To get your kindle app to sync with your sd card you have to pop the sd card out and put it back in. I just press it twice.
7) Open up kindle app and your books should be there.
Obviously you can avoid doing this by using an sd card reader and just dragging the books, into the kindle directory straight from your computer but this is just a neat way to do it via wireless.

To my knowledge, bought kindle books are keyed to the specified device they are downloaded to. I am having issues with pushing a protected kindle book, not a non-drm'ed book. The free books on the amazon kindle store come down perfectly.
Have you tried using the "Manage Your Kindle" to send the book to that specific device/app? How about de-registering the device/app and re-registering it. Then send the book again.

Yes, Yes, and Yes. I've tried pretty much everything under the sun. I was able to get it to work for a time on my samsung vibrant, when I upgraded to the first release of bionix V. When I flashed eugene373's new kernel, the book wouldn't download. Based on this, I think the particular configuration of the kernel is a factor in this issue. But with little information, and the generic "unable to download" message, it is just a guess.
Ok, I've side-loaded a generic .APK file, into a sub-dir within the 1.0-GB
area. (Previously, I likewise side-loaded a movie file into this same area, and it plays great.)
As I read other posts asking this same type of question about procedures/rules
for installing side-loaded apps, I'm not yet clear on a few things, such as
whether I need to be 'rooted' to install them and whether I first need to
purchase/install separate SD-card and load such generic apps there instead.
My current state is:
(1) My Nook tablet is still at 1.4.0 (i.e. I have NOT yet received the 1.4.1
update that blocks installation of such APKs.)
(2) My NT is NOT yet rooted.
When I view/select the side-loaded generic app, see a red question-mark on the file, and tappin it, I get msg:
"This nook cannot read this file. It may be an unsupported format."
So, what should I try next, to allow this file-type of .APK to be
a supported type?
Is this your first non-B&N apk? If so, I believe you have to download and install at least one apk directly through the Tablet's browser to get the option changed to allow sideloaded apks.

Well, it WAS my first non-B/N app.
So, I installed an app, one named 'Skitch', from the BN app store.
But, that makes no difference at all...my original side-loaded APK file
still gives the same error msg that I mentioned in the base post.
So, your 'belief' seems to be incorrect.
Anyone else know what to do, to install side-loaded .APK files?
[This issue could end up being one more nail in the coffin...if I don't resolve this,
I'll have to strongly consider returning this device, and waiting for a 'true' Android
tablet this spring, with newer, more main-stream code (e.g. 'Ice Cream Sandwich')
in it.]
Hi cookdav,
CapsLockKey is correct about needing to download an apk through the browser in order to do what you would like.
I noticed this yesterday after playing with my NT for the first time. When you download an apk through the browser you will see a notification in the lower left hand corner that it is complete. You have to launch the apk from this notification in order for the file to be correctly recognized.
When I went to my downloaded files and tried clicking the apk file I got the same message you are seeing. It seems to me that the BN overlay does not natively recognize the apk file format, but the code responsible for the notifications does.
You should then be able to follow the directions for enabling ADB. After that you can use adb to install any apk file you would like.
I hope this helps and that it was clear.

What does installing an app from the B&N app store have to do with side loading an app from the browser or email? Have you bothered to read the "how to side load apps thread?"
How you can fix your face to say "your 'belief' seems to be incorrect." when you aren't following instructions is funny as hell.

The operative word there is 'seems'.
And, yes, I did read that thread, but obviously now, I missed something.
I guess I missed the distinction, between installing an app via 'shop'
and installing an app via the browser. So, shoot me.
[That said, I'm still a bit confused. But, reading-between-the-lines has always
been problematic for some of us newbies.
I'll go back and re-read everything 3 times again,
and I'm sure that these distinctions will eventually become clear to me.]
Thanks for clarifying.
Ok, did one thru the browser, but still no-go...
Ok. I installed 'golauncher', via the browser.
Sigh. But, once again, after that, when I go back and try to install
the earlier-mentioned .APK, it still says what it has been saying all along.
Hmm..a new possibility has occurred to me: Maybe I'm so immersed in
Linux and Windows-XP and Win-7, that that has made me too stupid
to follow directions and learn this new 'tablet-way' of doing things.
[Whoever said "The devil is in the details" must have been an Android user.]
Clearly, I've STILL missed something, after re-reading. Anyone got
any more ideas/guesses of what I might still be missing?
"this nook cannot read this file" although I do sideload apks
I got a similar problem with Nook Tablet wit 1.4.0
I have managed to download an app so that my settings have been changed to accept those apps
If i go to another app market, I do install apps.
But for some reason I am limited (Amazon Apps refuses to work because I am not in the US and others have limitations which I dont understand, as on a chinese android pc they work, however)
SO I d like to install from sd card
And i get this message "this nook cannot read this file"
If I mail to gmail, in nook mail I cant open attachment (nor any others)
Any workaround?
Thanks
Agnes

I don't think you can install apk's through the native file browser. You will need a different file browser to install your apk's.
if you are downloading directly from the internet browser, then the installation process is the same as installing the tgps launcher or in your case go launcher.
However, if you are sideloading your apk's through something like dropbox or an sd card, you will need a file browser.
I recommend Root Explorer (paid), but if you need a free one you can download es file explorer.
es file explorer can be found in the must have apps thread located in the themes and apps section of the NT forums. Just go to that page on your NT internet browser and click the download link. You will be redirected to a download page, and there should be something that says "remove this frame". Tap on that and your download should start.
hope this helps
First off I will start off that I am new but I did try searching this forum and google as well. Everytime I download something either from a torrent or something from the internet, it says open file failed. Here recently i was tring to download some movies and I tried downloading bit torrent but I cant even open up the bit torrent to help me download other things. Has anyone ran into this yet?
open file failed could mean several things.
First, it could mean you dont have an application installed that is taking control of that filetype, the prime has no idea what applicaiton to open that file with.
The second is the file is corrupted and unreadable
Third it could be in use by something else and read protected
It could be several other things but unfortunately you have given us very little to go on.
What files specifically are you trying to open? .torrent files would need a torrent downloader capable of opening these files. Movies should easially open with the stock video player or MX player is what i use. If you are trying to install a .exe file you need to do some reading on differences between android and windows.
Hopefully this helps.
hi all,
my un-rooted GS3 died after 18 months during OTA update and Samsung wouldn't help me out. therefore, i hate Samsung, but when i decided to go with freedompop, the GS4 was my best option.
so here i am with a stock FreedomPop GS4 running 4.4.2. it is brand new and it won't write to internal memory with any downloaded apps. and since Kit Kat won't write to external memory, i am basically screwed with this phone unless i can fix internal write.
yes, i have tried a FACTORY RESET and nothing changed. yes, i have tried writing to multiple folders on both internal and external storage in a wide variety of areas on the drives with multiple third party apps. stock apps can write fine.
here are examples of the problem of posting to internal storage:
ES Explorer - cannot copy, move, or create any files. error: "copy task failed" and "[path here/filename.png open failed: EACCES (Permission Denied)"
Jota + text editor - could not save any files until i installed the Jota Google Drive accessory app. error: "Can't Save File"
Yelp - cannot post any photos. i believe this is due to Yelp wanting to copy the photo to its own directory to prep the file (resize/crop) before posting. error: "Sorry, there seems to have been an error retrieving your photo"
Swiftkey keyboard - the word prediction areas remain empty when typing due to errors installing the English Language Pack. the pack downloads fine, but is unable to be saved. errors: "unable to save language pack to storage" and "unable to load language packs"
because FreedomPop does not have it together and their snotty customer service totally sucks, i waited about a month for this phone from the date of order. i am dreading having to wait for a replacement, so i REALLY hope this is something i can fix.
anybody??
bump?
Hi I've been downloading torrent files for years and never had this problem. When I tried to download one yesterday I got a message saying "cannot be opened (torrent name) Torrent is a unknown film." I use utorrent pro and also tried flud but still get same message. Also I have tried different browsers but all the same. I also tried going into file manager and opening that way but I just get a list Text, audio, Image and Video.
Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place. Not been on here for ages.
Thanks in advance.
