I have read other posts on the forum but believe my problem is a bit different and quite weird (to me).
The symptoms are:
- sound through headphones is OK
- sound through the speaker when someone calls me on the phone is OK
- any other sound through the speaker is non-existent (ie ringtones, music, games)
I have tried rebooting, removing the battery, plugging/unplugging the headphones. I have tried the *#0*# code and pressed "speaker" but there's no sample sound heard (except through the headphones).
Does anyone else find it extremely odd that the speaker seems to work fine when someone is talking to me on the phone but nothing else? I'm guessing this means the problem is some kind of software or firmware issue. Correct?
Prior to the problem, I started with Android 2.3.3, rooted the phone, and flashed a stock ROM (KK2). I have upgraded to 2.3.6. Unfortunately I can't be sure the problem occured since 2.3.6 because I don't play music that much, and I play games without sound.
Should I (a) re-flash stock ROM, (b) factory reset, (c) call Samsung?
Grateful for any recommendations. (I'm not confident/competent with replacing the speaker myself)
regards.
Check sound settings first .
Factory reset.
Flash a stock rom .
Rooted so warranty void .
You will need to clear root with a stock rom flash and reset custom rom counter to zero with usb jig .

Receiving a call has a separate speaker, so your problem is with the back speaker which plays tones and other music, do a complete factory reset and check for sound if its still not playing, then it could be a hardware issue.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't realise there was a separate speaker.
I've performed a factory reset but no success.
I'll call Samsung today and arrange for the speaker to be replaced.
Thanks again
I've Had Success..
Hey guys..
I know this threads old, but I had success fixing an AU TELSTRA i9100T with the same Audio issues presented here. Runing GB 2.3.3 Totally Stock.. No root, nothing.
Every-time I increased the Speaker level to more that Half way, I'd hear a deep "CLICK" sound then no Audio any more through the Speaker..
When headphones are in, No problems at all..
Strange thing is, that once I turned it down below half way, and Blew air or puffed or even Talked Loudly into either of the 2 x Mics on the Top or Bottom of the phone, the sound would return OK.... but, again if I turned it up past Halfway ( sometime maybe one step over half way ) it would CLICK again and no Audio through the Speaker.
So, First I was thinking HW, then SW, tried Factory Reset.. no Help at all.. same issue..
Then, I flashed ROM to the latest Stock JB 4.1.2 XWLS8 Spanish ROM floating about the forums and This fixed it.. Perfect sound. No Hiccups.. :good:
Just wanted to share this..

Hello, I am a new user here.
I have a strange problem with my Bolt where at times the rear speaker plays all streams (alarm, notification, ringtone, media, etc.) so quietly that I have to put my ear directly next to the speaker to hear anything. At random times the speaker decides to play at normal volume again. I do not really hear a crackling sound so it seems the speaker is not blown.
The issue occurred when I was using SynergyROM for Thunderbolt r264, but the issue still occurs when I do a nandroid restore to a ROM I flashed previously when the problem did not occur. I am now using CyanogenMod 7.1.1 for Thunderbolt and yes, I am rooted.
The headphone jack works fine, so I'm guessing it has nothing to do with the system volume control. However, the problem sometimes occurs as soon as I plug in my headphones and then unplug them.
Does anyone know what I can do besides taking my phone to Verizon (my carrier) or a phone repair shop to fix this?
I have this same problem. I would also like to know what the cause is. It is very annoying because most of the time, I cannot hear my phone ring.
I think this may have something to do with the system thinking that headphones are still plugged in. I am running a Theoryrom based off of CM7 and if I go into the CyanogenMod settings in the sound menu and check the boxes for notifications, ring tones, and alarms to always play on speaker, all of a sudden the speaker volume seems to have improved. Something you may try. If it happens again on mine (which it will) I will see if I can figure out what the problem is.
Nevermind, it went back to being quiet, and that doesn't seem to fix it. Must have been a fluke.
It seems like there is no indication of when it will happen. Is it a hardware issue or an issue with the Android system and plugging in a headset?
My initial guess would be that it is a hardware issue. I have tried flashing new and different ROMs ranging from Sense base DasBAMF roms to AOSP based liquid roms and the problem persists even after a flash, which to me would indicate that it is not an issue with the Android system.
The last time it came and went for me had nothing to do with plugging or unplgging a headset. I have no idea what is going on.
Ok, so my speaker came back this morning, and I did notice one potentially related thing when it happened. Just before it came back, the DSPManager application force closed. I wonder if something is wonky with that program. If you are still having issues, could you try to force close, uninstall, or freeze (using Titanium) the DSPManager application to see if your speaker volume comes back?
Update: Nope, not it. Must be hardware.
The strange part about this problem is that nothing wrong seems to be happening with the software when the sound comes back on. Also, I have to play music constantly in order for the sound to come back on. It doesn't seem like the speaker is blown out... there is no crackling sound. The sound is just really really quiet.
Alright, I finally decided to replace the speaker unit inside my phone because it would no longer go back to the original volume. It seems my hunch was right. The new speaker is working perfectly now.
Hi to all members of the forum, I have a galaxy vibrant sgh-959 and the problem is that, there's no sound at all, can't hear incoming calls or people can't hear me either, no sound for ring tones, or anything that comes out the speaker or the phone, it seems that all the files are there but no sound, thank you for your help.
It would help to know what rom you are using
Maybe a bad installation, you need to share more info.
Hob0dan-T959
I'm sorry for not put in all the information, sgh-t959 firmware version 2.2, baseband ver t959uvkb5 kernel version 2.6.32.9 build number froyo.uvkb5
So you're running stock; wow. It might be a hardware issue. You can try to reflash the stock rom of just open the dial pad on your phone and type *2767*3855# which will do a factory reset on your phone
I just did a factory reset and still the same, no sound from anywhere, could be that speaker is bad? One thing I forgot to mention is that if I used the Bluetooth in the car it worked, (phone rings, pandora works,) but out of the car nothing works, you can feel the vibration on incoming calls and you can call, but no sound either from callers or from my side
For my thinking it could be some bad drivers, or the speaker is defective.
Hob0dan-T959
What type of drivers, I just downgrade back to stock like when it was new and still the same
Hmm probarly is the speaker.
Hob0dan-T959
I installed new kernel, and have no sound from S3 back speakers(next to camera). Then I reverted all back to stock rom and kernel, but still no sound.
If I place my phone near to my ear - seems sound us still working but with tiny volume. In headphones - sound working fine and front speaker working well when i answer calls.
I already did full wipe, format and stock again but with no effect. I'm very sure my phone is not in silent mode, all volumes are opened to maximum. I searched at other threads but no solution was reported.
Anyone had encountered this situation before and can anyone help me please??
If you've returned it to stock unrooted and the issue still exists,.it'll be a hardware issue

Hello,
I know this topic may sound similar to people around, although after long search I haven't found solution to my problem, which persists. Two weeks ago my bottom mic stopped working out of nothing and I have no idea why. I am currently running Cyanogenmod 11- M5 snapshot. Here is what I tried:
- Different ROM (Omni)
- hawkerscripts to full wipe
- take out / enlarge the hole of rubber covering the bottom mic inside
- amplify the gain through several applications
- disable noise reduction
Problem is it seems software related, because after a reflashing of cyanogen this evening, during first call the other side could hear me normally, but after a while of idleness (an hour) the mic stopped working again (e.g. I cant record sound in app or call). Only top speaker works which sucks.
Thank you for your advices
Flash stock firmware with Odin and test. Get stock firmware from sammobile.com
Stock rom try
Yeah tried stock 4.1.2 rom, same results. Mic works like for an hour, than its so quiet, that i would have to shout like horny oranguntan for the other side to hear me
I've had a very strange issue crop up yesterday. My external speaker (the one on the back of the phone) volume has suddenly become very very low, you have to hold it to your ear to hear anything. The headphones and all are working fine
OS: CM11 M8 - been using this for over a week now
Stuff I've tried
1. I don't think I installed any app or made any update that would make the speaker behave this way.
2. I've checked the volume panel and all are at full. I've tried using multiple music players/alarms etc to see if it works and the volume is extremely low in all of them.
3. I've tried rebooting the phone.
Please help
Edit: a couple of forums say that it might be due to the headphone jack not recognizing that headphones have been removed. Seems possible since my speaker is not crackling/buzzing and gives clear sound but at a very very low volume level. Any suggestions on how I can fix this?
Help ... tried cleaning the headphone jack, removing the battery and restarting the phone. Not willing to do a factory reset if it's a hardware fault
What do you suggest ?
Got it solved, and in a very strange way
Restored my orignal 4.0 rom with twrp image. That suddenly caused all my speakers to start working. Moved back to the CM image and everything still works fine
Weird but true, mods can you add solved to the title
