hi, i just a bought a motorola Photon for my CDMA number .
im a long time user of Blackberry, and iPhone
i still use my Blackberry 9900 for my GSM number
and traded my iPhone for an iPad
anyway, this is my first ever android device.
so can you guys tell me what should i do with it to make my experience with this platform be better ?
eg:
how to upgrade to latest firmware or software
hot to maximize the phone capabilities
and how to install games and apps ?
please pardon me as i never use any android device before so i'm quite "blind" here
but I'm into tweaking the phone that i had
i've jailbreaked my iPhone and my iPad and i've upgraded my Blackberrys several time over the years , so i guess I'm not so novice in this gadgets world.
i just need some guidance
thank you so much
check out thils link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1393519
also when i first got started i watched some of qbking77's videos on youtube. they can help you out a lot. he has videos on unlocking the bootloader, rooting, and even rom reviews. check it out
Mm I highly suggest you download these apps and youll love ur phone 10 times more, go to the market download 4shared mobile, tjen open 4shared mobile and register, in 4shared search adw ex and download it, it may be under adw ex launcher. Then in 4shared search chompsms and download that, 4shared is like limewire but for apks on android(make sure is .apk). A launcher is what handles your home screen and app drawer, adw ex is very costumizable, chompsms is my favorite app for costumizing my text messaging app, but you will have to disable your stock text app in the apps settings so you wont get two notifications for every text. Dolphin browser hd is free in google play, good browser. Also in 4shared for better widgets download beautiful widgets, and for costumizable trigger widgets download widgetsoid from 4shared(i use this widget constantly to turn off 3g, gps, wifi, my led flashlight, screen rotation, all from my homescreen. Themes for adw launcher are in google play.
Granted others my suggest a different launcher sms etc, but these are GREAT apps with very few flaws and give you a much more customizable phone and see some of what android is all about
For games, in 4shared download hyperjump or radiant hd or guns n glory theyre all pretty good games to get ya started! this all may seem like a lot to do but its worth it I promise! Hope I helped give you a running start into the android world its a pretty vast one.
PS: widgetlocker is a great app for costumizing your lock screen! (4shared not googleplay)

My suggestion would be to first get comfortable playing around with settings and apps on the stock (normal, no-root) version of Android.
Then, if you're still "hungry for more" or curious (and not too worried about warranty issues), look at rooting the stock version. What this can add is user-controlled underclocking (power savings), app backup/bloatware removal capabilities, and some other nifty things. It's worth checking out the "All things Photon" rexxxgg posted to get a few ideas.
The next step up the ladder is unlocking the bootloader, installing a custom recovery, and then installing a custom ROM. It's slightly higher risk than rooting, especially if you're not comfortable with RSD-mode/flashing SBFs (if you don't understand what I'm saying, make sure you read about it!), but also high reward. Custom ROMs, like CyanogenMod and MIUI, are designed to really take advantage of everything Android can and should be, IMO. BUT you really need to do some reading to understand the risks of rooting and ROM-ing first. The phone companies definitely do not have your back once you decide to take the plunge (as you may be well aware with from jailbreaking and such)!
Everything I posted is about as much costumizating you can do without root

okay thx for the advices
I'm thinking to load a ROM
can anyone give me idea which one to load ?
i want the most stable build
should i flash with STOCK rom or Custom ROM ?
and which version ?
thank you.
which roms?
i liked, shadow, rocko rom, homebase, and cm9. none of these are stock, but homebase is very very close, the others offer more customization!
cm9 is a very stable rom i just love it. joker even got the camera working.
Did you just flash cm9? Or have you been on that for a while?

I have been in the android "game" since the the release of the G1 and I have tried many different ROMS, many different browsers and the mytouch slide has to be one of the best I have used whether it be a stock android browser or 3rd party. The pinch to zoom is as smooth as the iphones and the new copy text feature works great compared to other stock android browsers.
Basically, I just want people to know about the browser so maybe we can see it implemented in more custom ROMs. I think it's currently in the Zen mytouch slide ROM, so I highly suggest you guys give it a try if you haven't already

I agree with this ...., I usually use an after market browser, but I will say the browser in the Zen rom is really nice.... pinch zoom is smooth and the copy text feature is nice also
It really is...I was really surprised with the speed also...I hope some of the devs will notice this also and can start implementing it into their roms. i tried replacing the apk from different ROMs but it doesn't seem to be that easy
can someone upload the .apk?
I can post it when i get home, but all I did was download the zen rom and pulled the browser apk. from it. I couldnt get it to install on my current rom though.
Here's the Apk.
Ok so the Xperia X10 community has had it hard and there’s a lot of anger and resentment in the forums and all over the net. I know I’ve voiced my views with many degrees of hurt till I’m blue in the face but it doesn’t change much and generally puts everyone in a bad and defeated mood.
So I was thinking that while the amazing developers are hard at work trying to open the bootloader which would in turn bring the dawn of custom roms to the X10 what could I do to help them and the community look forward and do something positive.
So I thought rather than hug trees and kiss your neighbour why not start a thread with the sole purpose of designing a Rom in preparation for the day when the bootloader is cracked open.
I’m no coder but I can create graphic assets for UI’s and then I got to thinking what if we took a look at all the Roms out there that looked good or have excellent features that we would want in an X10 rom and from those ideas and new ones we could start the look and feel of a Rom with us in mind.
Now that would cheer everyone up surely. It could be something for us all to be proud of and for the other kitchens to take cues from as well.
So firstly lets post screen shots of things we think are ace, features we love or want, animation styles that are to die for even if they are scanned pencil sketches on paper. It would keep us occupied and give the developers some breathing space.
Just an idea
I love the idiea that sounds great wat ik would like to see are a few standard apps in the rom as rainy days titanium back up silent mode a good agenda msn talk pingchat and a good working alternitive internet browser.
if they could be put in the rom then we dont have to download them from the market.

Having particular apps included is always a bonus but i'm thinking about the Rom features them selves and how it works to make using the phone better or at least different.
See the link for an example (Not that i want my phone to look like an iPhone copy BTW)
http://www.androidcentral.com/miui-rom-now-available-motorola-droid
A great idea. I hope this will lead to some great rom's. I'm new to android and xda and I only know Python and Free pascal, so I cannot help with programming, but I will surely post it here if I come up with something.

If i remember correctly jerpelea has already compiled CM6 for X10..
I would like to see the Desire HD ROM to be ported . As it has already been ported to Nexus One and the Desire running the same Snapdragon QSD8250 it should not be much of a trouble..
I was thinking that a site just like Slax builder http://www.slax.org/build.php would be amazing.
If people could choose what apps, themes etc etc then download the custom rom I think it would be a hit...
If I knew more about rom dev I would love to have a go at seeing if this kind of thing would possible for x10 android roms. I'd be up for the dev of the site.
I would like to see on my X10 let's see.....any custom ROM.
Get Sense running on it (Android 2.2) and I'll buy an X10.
yeah good idea, but i prefer to focus our power on bootloader crack..or kick SE insiders to make them think about better decisions...but i look back, keep further..
oh, it will be great a modaco type rom maker, u know, like u choose what u want to implement to it....

A Rom with user selectable options sounds great, also sounds like a lot of work for the Dev's as essentially the rom would be compiled by the user via a gui then installed.

I think we should face the facts of the past events and give up on SE changing their direction on the X10's software lifecycle.
In all their statements not once do they apologise for not meeting the dates they set or not be close to the expectations of the X10 owners. In truth i sense an air of annoyance that they have to make statements on their own blog at all.
Future devices will be better and not so lacking on smart phone hardware standards but that will be based on associated developer requests rather than us or the general publics want and wishes.
That’s why I thought of this thread so we can end the disappoints because we’ll create what we want.
Cool idea.
Can i suggest the rom should have:
Launcher and interface:
ADW Launcher
Some 3rd party lock screen that is better than the stock, but not a buggy one
SMS Popup
SlideIT Keyboard
Beautiful Weather and Clock widget
Browser:
XScope G browser
Stock Browser as backup
Multimedia:
Doubletwist Music Player
iTag
Vignette
screenshot
Shazam
RingDroid
Utilities/Tools:
Unit Converter
SwiftFTP
gMote
Titanium Backup
EasyTether Lite
RealCalc Scientific Calculator
Xperia Flashlight
I'd suggest a clean ROM Apps can be installed later..
I'm not sure this is the right place to put this, and please don't freak out, you Windows Mobile haters, but I would like to see the X10 be able to dual boot Android and Windows Mobile.

I'm with you. A nice clean, stock ROM would be the best. Everybody can install apps for themselves (heard of AppBrain? ). Designing a ROM with pre-installed apps will be very difficult, since everybody has other tastes/likes. (For example: I hate everything pre-installed. I want to be able to choose what to install on my phone. I also hate that the pre-installed apps that come with a phone can't be uninstalled. They're just taking up precious space...)

I would pay 25,00 euros for S2U2 on my X10!! The only reason I miss WinMo...
Could be cool with duel boot on the x10i. But i would say, focus on getting a clean room first, for when the bootloader is cracked. Just with standard stuff like the browser, etc.
The CM for x10 would be amazing yes, but a custom room only for the x10, why not but good luck

That's right!
I just need a clean n OPTIMIZED for our snap dragon and GPU and memory ...thats enough ...
really news on bootloader has dried up... and lock screen in x10 is killing me and making me break the phone...
i simply wish we had a better ROM with all those resource hogging apps out of the system.
also i simply wish we had the first key in the bottom to answer calls .. instead of lock screen... that would be really great ...
720 P recording and better audio drivers with optimized and improved bass would be a real addition...
also wish dev somehow enable 16m color...
I am tired of SE .. had been a seriuos SE fan for nealry 5 yrs now
t610-k700-k750-k800-k850-w995 all major phones from them... but those days we had se-nse for custom tunning the drivers and it was fun... but now with this bootloader [email protected] i am missing the real fun..
if SE cant do anything ... they should atleast open up the bootloader to dev`s...
1. I keep seeing MIUI roms pop up all over. Could someone explain to me in plain English what exactly it is? From the screenshots I've seen it looks like the iphone...and there are Chinese iphone clones with (an actual) MIUI os out there right? But these roms are android OS modified to look like MIUI, which is a clone of Iphone? am I correct so far?
2. From the posts I've read, it's still buggy as far as GPS amongst other bugs? Also the UI itself has no app drawer and uses the grouping icons on the desktop like IOS? I've played around with the nephews ipod thouch, and it is annoying as hell...you can't just have a nice clean desktop with a few app shortcuts to say cam/mp3/navi and then a button to access the rest of your apps? It's all there in your face with groups of apps/games taking up your whole homescreen? (again unless you download some mod, which has to run in the background taking up resources) ?
If you have used a miui rom I'd love to get some feedback, before I try to flash one...again it seems to me it's trying to clone an iphone, in which case why not just get one?
I wasn't sure about the MIUI ROM's at first. Slowly they started popping up on almost every device. A few friends ran it on their phones and that's what originally got me to flash it. You are correct in that there is no app drawer. Luckily for me I use folders like none other. It was a pain and still is every time I update, but I am patient and take the time. I just make a folder named "apps" and place all my apps in there! BOOM!!! EPIC app drawer action! It really has started to grow on me. I enjoy the ease of customizing all the theme options that's a big plus for me and I never really messed with that too much on other ROM's. Its so simple with MIUI you can't help your self. Its really pretty slick and I have no bugs to report. GPS werks fine for me and that is something I need to werk. Check it out, it might be for you, it might not. Only one way to find out.
Good luck!
Hey Xda!
Lately, I have come across some pretty cool apps. Such as SF Launcher Alpha, Action Launcher, Sliding Messages, etc. (which I highly recommend you check out, they are pretty cool), but what do they all have in common? They all require ICS or higher Roms. When I email the developers and ask if they could backport the app, they all say the same thing: "Sorry, I use too many ICS Api's to support Gingerbread". Now, I understand that Gingerbread has limitations, but can these apps really not run on gingerbread devices? I remember a year ago that everyone said that the Apollo music player can not run on gingerbread, but look at it now, it is on gingerbread running perfectly fine. So with that being said, can someone explain to me what developers mean when they say they use too many ICS Api's?
Not trying to step on any ones toes either, just want to know.
Thanks in advance!

Anyone?
it means that they don't have any gingerbread phones to test their app on, or simply because they don't want to provide backward support.
First of all greetings XDA community. I am new here but ever since I got my android and found this website I've been checking and searching for needed information, up until now I never had the need to register or post. So thanks for the help and information I've already found in other threads and other topics
The reason I needed to make an actual post here, is because I don't exactly have a precise question. I understand this may be a subject of discussion, so I wanted to hear the opinion of people with more experience and knowledge.
I have a Samsung Galaxy W, for probably less than a year. I understood that at the time of purchase the phone itself was already "outdated".
However this didn't concern me, I wanted a phone just so I could access the Internet anytime needed just to read some stuff or google something I may need as well as checking fb and twitter. For larger and more resource-consuming apps I would use my tablet (a Sony S).
In a nutshell: I want my android for browsing the Internet and checking fb and twitter. I would use it as an mp3 and to play some casual games to burn some time (angry birds, solitare, bejwelled, Jetpack Joyride and so forth).
By the way, I would like to (at the risk of getting sidetracked) ask you for some recommendations on browsers for android. I know Chrome is probably by far the best, but sadly the Galaxy W can't run Chrome. I've tried Dolphin, Opera, Ninesky... but nothing that would fully satisfy me (like Chrome).
The issue: As of late my phone as been slowing down and dragging itself a bit too much. Something as simple as opening the messages, something you'd expect to be instantaneous, takes some painful seconds under a black screen.
I couldn't deal with the keyboard (this is my first touchscreen phone) so I tested and bought SwiftKey which made typing a lot easier, but sometimes it also takes a while to see the keyboard appear.
Some of my apps (might be relevant): Juice Defender, 3G Watchdog, Facebook, Twitter, TweetDeck, tomtom Places, and some apps that are forced by the carrier.
I use Clean Master and I even try to, sometimes, kill iddle tasks of things I don't need, but it feels pointless since the phone just drags and slows even more as he restarts the closed apps again.
I think that using a different ROM might help my issue, and I have some questions:
1- Do you think using a Jelly Bean (or ICS) Cyanogen mod might improve the speed on my phone (pardon if I'm saying some barbarity in here)
2- If I install a Jelly Bean or ICS ROM will I be able to downolad and install Chrome from the store?
3- The phone is unlocked (meaning I can use other SIM cards from any carriers in it). Will the ROM undo this and force the phone back to it's original carrier?
4- The phone is rooted. This is kinda silly but I'd like to be sure. Will a new ROM un-root my phone?
I think that's it. Sorry for the long post. I wanted to make sure I wrote all the relevant information to make sure I get the right answer :fingers-crossed:
Thank you, looking forward to read your replies :highfive:
I forgot to mention, for some time i used the ex go launcher. It worked the same as the default theme. It takes sometime to load at first but after loading the transitions are smooth and everything works fine... until i open an app or do something big.
Lately (read, today) the call button was a bit laggy and i did not like it one bit.

Hi .
I just saw this forum. and came across a topic related to upgrading Galaxy W to kitkat unofficially. How about your 'quest? lol.
