I just got my note and coming from the atrix with a notification light, I'm pretty let down this doesn't have one.
Does anyone know of an app or mod that can perhaps light up the soft keys instead? I know you can for the nexus S

Not without a custom rom. just mess around with the phone for a week or two to get a baseline feel for it then go custom and enjoy!

you can use the NoLED app from the market but beware that you need to test and configure it to best liking, cause even though it might look like the screen is off is not, it puts dots in the screen as notification, so for the time being before you decide to flash a custom rom, give it a try, I used it for a bit but noticed that if I had a notification on for a long time it killed my battery significantly.

This. I would get emails in the middle of the night, triggered the NoLED icon and keep my screen on all night. I would go to bed with 90+% and it would drain to about 30% in a few hours. Thank god it had the schedule function so you can disable it when you don't plan on caring about a notification.
Missed Message Flasher, which works for a dozen or two apps and general notifications. For Calendar notifications only I've switched over to Calendar Snooze because it gives more options for vibration, plus adds many options to snooze that the stock Calendar doesn't. I still use MMF for text and some other notifications.

NoLED has worked fine for me for well over a year now. I think the propblem people are encountering is not that their screen is on, it's that their phone is not able to enter deep sleep mode. The technology behind the screen is what allows this app to work without zapping the battery within an hour. Also most people charge at night so this is not an issue. Also noLED has a widget that makes turning the feature on and off a simple task. My phone lasted over 24 hours with no charging and had the noLED notification on at night so there may be more at work for those having issues with it, as I said I only saw it prevented deep sleep but did not trigger "screen on" time in stats as only a few pixels were actually on. I do only use the dots, not the big icons.
Unfortunatly, noLED would be your best bet at this time, IMO. BLN support is sketchy at best. Just make sure you have noLED setup so that it won't keep the screen on for hours on end and your fine. I tried to get BLN support working for the longest time, it was flakey at best on some roms, and all out didn't work with ohters that claimed to have support for it. And with ICS coming out today ( or so they say, look in the dev section for the posts ), BLN support won't exist anyway for a bit

I realize that the SGII does not have the LED Notification and this is a feature I have loved from the Blackberry to the Motorola Atrix. I even tried to switch from ATT to Sprint for the new Touch 4G SGII with Notification LED but Sprint sucks in my area but the screen SOLD ME!!!
Anyway now that ATT will have the SGII I plan to get one I love the screen but how are you getting past no notification LED. I don't want to constantly be powering on the display to make sure I haven't missed an audible notification. Does the SGII offer ab option for a recurring notification sound? Just don't want to walk away from my phone while its charging and miss a message. I have one of those jobs where I am required to respond to emails in 15 minutes....

Why not use a kernel with BLN. That is what i use as a substitute.
It turns the buttons into notification lights.
Search BLN in this forum, stands for Blacklight Notification. Some Kernels support it. It uses the back and menu button as a blinking indicator
NoLED is another alternative. It works without rooting.
Do note that NoLED will drain your battery like crazy if you don't "confirm" the notification.
The phone will not enter sleep-mode while a notification is going on. For me: rather useless. For somebody else: might just work as expected
I've used both BLN and Noled.
BLN will drain my S2 no matter what. I prefer Noled as it flexible and allows me to configure my notifications to my likings to minimize battery drain.
I use BLN and I'm pretty happy with it. Battery life is still very good, can't even tell if BLN drains that much. Haven't tried NoLED so far so I can't really say anything about it.
I use NoLED. I have noticed on occasion it has drained the battery somewhat, but I usually access the phone long before it becomes an issue. I like the fact that it uses custom icons for different events.
Tons of apps on the market that can play sounds at a certain period, reminding you of missed sms/calls/emails. I'm not a fan of led notifications, i'd rather use sound notifications.
Ninpo's kernel is BLN enabled and can be used with any samsung ROM. Install free version BLN controls app and you are good to go.
I've seen these throughout the forums and we are lacking one of our own!
This is how (i hope) you can get better battery life and what i use personally to get my phone to last through the day
1. If your not using it then turn it off! GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi
-Minus the screen these are the biggest battery killers and if you don't need them then turn it off
2.Auto brightness is not your friend. Use a set brightness to your liking below 50%
-I see people claiming it helps and truth is it doesn't, It enables an added sensor to monitor the amount of light outside and guess what? That kills your battery too. You're better off using a widget or some other method to change your brightness on the fly to avoid this
3.Data and Background syncing.
-If you can afford to turn your Data connection off when you're not using it i suggest getting into the habit! This can drastically improve your battery life. For those who can't i suggest adjusting your sync intervals so they aren't checking as often
4.Put Your Phone Down!
-Yes we can all agree your phone can be a fun toy to play with but if you need it to last then put it down! Stop checking it every five minutes just to look at the screen! you have notifications for a reason and your background isn't going look better if you keep looking at it
5. Live Wallpapers
-Live wallpapers are fun to show off especially to Iphone owners but it comes at a price, Show them what it can do then go back to your boring wallpaper to save battery
6.Rogue apps
-There are many apps in the market to help you find these silent battery killers. Find one and uninstall them.
Apps like Facebook also kill your battery horribly, Use the web page instead if you don't need to know what everyone is posting at every second
7.Turn off animations/Haptic feedback
-I personally don't do this but it has been proven that these features do kill your battery
8. Task killers
-This hasn't been a problem more recently but if this does apply, uninstall the dang thing and stop killing every app that pops up! If the app keeps running in the background then just uninstall it
9. Find the rom that suits your needs
-To each their own, find the rom that better suits your daily life. I agree Its awesome to run the cutting edge software on our phones but if you need your phone for daily use then maybe stock/debloated is what you need
10.Extended battery/carry a charger
-If the stock battery just doesn't cut it then it's probably time to invent in an extended battery, and if you're like me and that still doesn't cut it then carry a charger with you to give you and extra boost. When your on the side of the road with a dead phone because you had to run AOSP and it killed your battery you will wish you had this
Summary: In the end It's just fancy phone with an HD screen so it was inevitably a battery killer from the start so good luck
If you have anything to add (Apps or suggestions to help) then don't be afraid to speak up this is a community effort

You may be correct that it isn't very effective at saving battery, but I think that's only because it never dims far enough, compared to other devices I have where auto-brightness seems far more effective.
Also, I'm almost positive that turning off auto-brightness does not disable the light sensor. You can turn off auto-brightness and use a sensor probing app to verify that it is still indeed functioning.
Pretty much everything else makes sense to me. I have tons of widgets but most of them are simply information and don't really need to poll anything or use many resources most of the time.
Strangely enough, I've been really noticing my battery die quickly every once in awhile recently, and when I check it seems that Google Maps has been going crazy in the background and won't close.. very strange. A reboot usually solves the problem for a few days til it happens again.

My 5 pages have (left to right): 1- news/weather, Apollo (cm music), google ears/sound search, 2- power control, gmail, 3(main screen)- desk clock 4-calander agenda, google music, 5 browser bookmarks, google voice

I used to think that auto-brightness was killing my battery, but from doing some informal tests I actually found very little difference in battery life using 25-50% brightness versus auto-brightness. I'd be interested if other people have different experiences.
Actually I've noticed that Google Maps also keeps waking up my phone and using the GPS recently. What ROM are you on? I'm on Viper 1.0.3.

I think the tweaks on Newt's Rom has an option to change the scaling of the auto-brightness, meaning that you move the whole scale down so that it is dimmer at given light levels than stock. I'm not sure if it ever goes to full value though and that would disappoint me on sunny days.
In regards to the Facebook app, you can disable notifications and auto polling...

So, the LED is way too tiny for my aging eyes (also cannot get it to change colours with Lightflow anyway). I am looking for some sort of app that can show a notification on the screen when the screen is off. I don't want the screen to turn on. I just want some sort of icon to show up. I used to use an app called NoLed that would do this. You could customize icons for different notifications, colours, timing, duration, etc. Looks like that app is long gone.
I've been trying a bunch of different "edge lighting" apps, hoping to find one that will simply light up the edges to notify my (when the screen is off). So far, none of them work the way I want (or at all).
Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Thank you! That's the old app I was referring to that I used to use. Glad you still have a copy. I've just installed it, but for some reason the icons a super small. Just like mini-squares, no matter what I do.

I just went through and tried messing with the settings, in notifications settings you can change it from dot to icon which makes some bigger.

There are several drop-in AOD replacement apps, and they work well, but... From all reports they drink your battery too much to be worth it. Too bad, not sure why Huawei didn't go that next obvious step and have control over 'per app' notifications and such. It pretty much makes the stock AOD useless unless you really, really like knowing what time it is.
Maybe give a try to this, a perfect AOD application fully customizable !

I tried this and was unable to get it to work. All I want it to do is light up the edges of the screen when the screen is off and a notification comes in. I had all the settings looking like they were correct. I chose difference colours for different apps, but no go. It wouldn't even work when trying "test". It would only work with the screen on.

Certainly a mistake in the configuration menu, because this is exactly the point of this app !
Tested and approved by your servitor right here, look at the screen shot I took when I just received a notification.

Same here.. 30% overall drain overnight.. Means at least 20% by the app itself
Just gave this app a try and it's got a few quirks to it. If I leave the "allow fingerprint functionality" after about 3 seconds the fingerprint location lights up and that's all that shows on the screen.
I also noticed when unlocking, face detection is no longer automatic. I have to double tap the screen to dismiss this app and then double tap again to start the face unlock.
Its a shame the stock aod is so terrible

The stock AOD will hopefully be better soon as Huawei in it's p30 pro latest firmware will add 3rd party access to the AOD, so developers can add functionality to the AOD.

Probably be nest year when we get it then.
I guess will be nice if we discuss how to achieve some kind of notification on our displays without draining the battery. Smartwatch is good way to deal with it, but let's keep to the phone itself. Most wanted feature is to have recurrent notifications. I invested some time in trying some apps and these are my "5 cents":
- Always On Edge- this is the program I prefer to use so far and will explain why. It lights up the edges and could be set to be recurrent. With many settings about almost everything. Just don't forget to save the settings after changing things. It works most of the time, but it's a bit tricky- don't let the system to control it (to stop it)- you can do it from battery management. And from my experience- use the power button to turn off the screen (or just leave it to turn off). Using some additional programs (like JButton and Fluid gestures) activate more secure mode (could be wrong) and prevent the notification blinking. The good is that it's relatively battery friendly.
- LED Blinker Notifications - always working, nice customization. Shows colored circles on the screen in Awlays On Display manner. Can set different color for different app and random position (to avoid burn-in). The bad- spends a lots of power and the battery is going down fast. And is way pricier. I bought it anyway to test it, but probably will stay unused.
- Glimpse Notifications- works (almost) always. The problem is that will either light up your screen (drains battery, because wakes up the CPU) or makes a vibration or a sound. This could be annoying for everyone.
- integrated Always On Screen feature in our phones- works fine, shows icons with the notifications. Nice solution, but spends about 1% battery per hour (on my phone). This is the whole consumption of the phone of course, but I think that this is 1.5-2 times more than regular consumption. It's good solution anyway.
I use the following combination:
- Always On Display with clock + notification icons
- Always On Edge (rainbow crashes around the edges + clock + notifications)
- phone is in DND
- Xiaomi Mi Band 3 vibrates

What is the purpose of DND? Avoiding sounds and turning on the screen?

I don't want to hear anything from the phone. Just want to be notified in a visual (AOD + AOE) and haptic (Mi Band 3) way.
I assume screen or display is both fine

I'm also looking for a solution since I miss the LED so much. I'm currently with Always On Edge, but I'm not happy with it. It drains the battery quite a lot, even when I don't get a lot of notifications.
I had days where the stats do report 90 min cpu including 50 min in background. It's quite unrealistic that it had to blink that long during the whole day.
If somebody has a better alternative (also playing together with the fingerprint unlock), please let me know.
Better to check the mAh that are consumed, than the CPU and the screen time. It's located in Power Consumption Details -> Software and is not so bad. But probably depends on how much time you spend away from your phone. You can use AOD and put the phone with screen down, it will turn off screen until you flip it and see if notifications are available.

@kimirai1027 for some Apps e.g. WhatsApp you can specify vibration intensity:
Settings -> Notifications -> WhatsApp -> More Settings -> Vibration: Off/ Standard/ Short/ Long

I had tried to use ALWAYS ON EDGE (among a few other apps) but no matter what settings I tried, etc. I could not get it to work. That being said, I found another app on the Play Store called ALWAYS ON AMOLED and it works like a CHAMP.
It is super customizable and seems to be very similar to ALWAYS ON EDGE so if you are looking for something like this to use as a visual for notifications then I recommend this app. Just search for ALWAYS ON AMOLED on the Play Store...

You are absolutely right! Nothing to add from my part, it is exactly what I lack in my P30 Pro: the software is horrible.
On the other hand, guys what is wrong with just using the AOD? It doesnt drain the battery like the Samsung one...so...? I use that and I am ok with it.

Edit: i forget to enable the AOE toggle from notification,it is working now,seems perfect for me

notifybuddy not working on my p30 pro with android 9. install, allow access, choose apps for notification ... nothing happens when new notifications are there. maybe we can do something with tasker? turn AOD on when notification?
I find it unbelievable in this day and age when manufacturers decide to remove a functional Led yet don't replace it with anything half decent for notifications.
You know when you plug in your charger, those green bubbles appear? A notification like that would have been nice.

That's the one thing I miss from my S10+, using good lock to have the notification light around the hole punch, most third party applications from the play store need ridiculous permissions or use a stupid amount of battery

I couldn't get Always on Edge to wake up my phone screen, though after a lot of trouble it DID finally blink when I had the screen on... I'm almost positive I gave it all the requested (and optional) permissions. Is there another recommended app that could produce a noticeable blinking light when I get a notification? In case it matters, I am using a Pixel 3a.

I tried it, but it doesn't seem to work for me. I don't know if it is because notifications are waking my screen, or what. But I don't get any notification light while my screen is off.
EDIT: I had seen the developer reply to a comment saying it wouldn't work after screen wake, by design, as a deliberate effort to save battery. I just turned off the "Wake Screen Upon Notification" option on my phone, and that made NotificationBuddy work. But I want something that will still work after the screen wakes.
I am pretty sure with this device your only choice is to use AOD and then these apps work. Otherwise, they can only really wake the screen. I use LED blinker with AOD on and it works every time, but can be a bit glitchy when trying to open the phone to see the notification. What I mean is, if I use my fingerprint, it does not always go to homescreen, I have to press power button to relock and try again. This is really google's fault for not adding a native option for some kind of blinking on the screen. I think no matter what it would require AOD to work though.
I've always said that something as tiny as the notification LED on Android phones made them far more useful than iPhones. I'm disappointed that Google has removed this once great advantage over Apple, just as it did with the old notification ticker from the pre-lollipop days.

Even with AOD on (which is not my preference) these apps still don't seem to work correctly. Do I also have to disable the wake screen for notifications option? I really dislike these choices.
I'm getting really frustrated that I practically have to hack my phone to get it to do things that my phone from 4 years ago could do natively.

Not sure, I am running a custom rom. All I have done is enabled AOD and installed the app and it works.
I have led blinker, it's the best one I found... Not as perfect as a real notification led but it do the work
