Can people who have the new OTA ICS leak comment on the update Webtop 3.0.0 Beta? From what I read at droidrzr it sounds more like it is only mirror mode and that the Linux layer is gone. is this correct? If so, it is unfortunate. http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/1606-ics-motorola-webtop-30-beta-preview/
Webtop has its limitations, but it needs greater access to Linux, not less. Android native apps on a non-touchscreen laptop screen do not translate well. The touchpad is a poor substitute for touch input and text designed for a 4.3" phone looks huge on a laptop screen. Also, Firefox allowed for some funtionality that was lacking in Android (for example, you can run HULU and use proxy switching to access sites locked to certain countries.) these features have some work-arounds through apps (like Flash-browser and Tor) but I don't weant webtop to take a step back.
Yeah they probably played around with Linux trying to get it to run at a manageable speed and gave up, and decided to just make it into a glorified PadPhone. I'm not complaining though really. They just need to make a lapdock where you have a touch screen.
Is there any way to install the old version, or (better) Ubuntu natty narwhal ?
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
Sticking to GB
The only thing making me stick to GingerBread is having the Webtop, i tried installing the ubuntu version on top of the android system, but nothing has such beautiful native system support as the Webtop either modded or the regular Moto one
The OTA update to .173 broke the webtop "TrackPad" feature for me. So now if I use webtop, I have to have a mouse/keyboard to use it fully on a HD device. W
With the HD Station, it is not a big deal because a usb or wireless usb mouse/keyboard works fine. But on the HD Dock... no such luck - I would need to go out and buy a new BT mouse/keyboard.
I have a ticket in with Moto support, and should hear back today from them regarding this.
I backleveled the Maxx to .748 and Webtop is fully functional including the trackpad feature on the phone.

When I let it take the OTA update again to .173 - no more track pad. I verified this and can repeat on both Maxx's that I have here.
I did load the soak test, and the beta WT 3.0.0 that came with it does seem to be a very scaled down WT version. Like someone said earlier... glorified mirror mode it seems. I can report that the trackpad does work again with 3.0.0 - beta.
nice report spollock! i haven't had a need for this as i just purchased a new MacBook air before the RAZR came out... i doubt i would have bought the air if i had the RAZR first i would have bought a lapdock instead. PHONE=COMPUTER is the future, the days of the laptop are numbered, though hardly anyone knows this yet.

That is the 3.0.0 -Beta webtop and it is the same video that is linked in the OP.
Webtop mode works fine with just an hdmi cable so no nebtop app needed now. Also be sure to switch your apps to webtop mode to get the tablet experiene with them. Overall i like it better that the old webtop.

Thanks for the updates. I see some positives and negatives, and I guess I will have to wait to try it. Since ICS supports more native resolutions, maybe the native android apps work and look a bit smoother than they do in the old webtop. But I still don't understand why they need to remove prior functionality. Maybe they are just giving up on the lapdock and focusing on the HDMI/TV experience?
If that is the case, I'll probably just try and run Linux from within android with : https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sMSwyLDEsImNvbS5nYWxvdWxhLkxpbnV4SW5zdGFsbCJd

Looks bad? Seriously? I think this is the most exciting part of ICS on the newer Motorola handsets. I can't wait to use this. It smokes the Linux/Firefox implementation by leaps and bounds.
Bad because it's not an inplementation, only ICS on a larger screen, it's not an innovation like a dual running system...

Yeah, but it looks like it just "flat works", which is most important to the "other 95%" of us who aren't here, who just want the thing to be useful and hassle-free.
I agree with both sides. I'm glad that it looks to be a smoother and more polished overall experience. But I will at the same time miss having the non-android environment. Firefox allowed me to access streaming video, edit PDF's and access sites that only work well on a PC.
As long as the thing runs my Dish Remote Access, I'll be happy

Can any of you that are running webtop 3.0 comment on how netflix runs? In version 2.0 it crashes a lot and I was curious to it's performance in the new update. I was able to snag up a bionic dock for $50 and would like to keep it for netflix.

ATRIX users, check this camera app out. It has 1080p working. I will post more results when I do more testing of the app for smoothness and ability to work well. There is a paid version and a free version. My phone is stock gingerbread and it works.
Observations:
Colors are richer
Recording choppy, but playback not as much
Will do more observations.

Mostly during the recording of it. The playback is smoother than recording.
Sent from my Atrix 4G with XDA Premium App
Same 10 sec static image with no audio. You will see the file sizes for D3 and lg are very close. The lgcamera app timer is running too fast, hence it showing only an actual 9-1/2 secs in GSpot, when I was closer to 10-1/2 seconds using the apps timer. Playback of both videos on a 24" 1080p monitor was crap for both samples, so I am not convinced anyone has yet given us true hardware/firmware supported 1080p on the Atrix. My position is that it will take a dev to do some serious work, or Moto to release an update which gives true support. If 1080p were this easy to get on the Atrix, Moto would have done it at release.
<edit> Notice the D3 is running at 31fps. I haven't verified if this is consistent across multiple samples.
<edit 2> After reading the OP again, I would say I noticed no difference in colour, clarity, etc., between either video samples.

I have no video lag or delay. But will put up on plasma flatscreen to check. I have sound
Sent from my Atrix 4G with XDA Premium App
The reason I don't use sound to test is because sound is unpredictable, and can make a big difference to file size. Similarily I take video with a static image so that I have the best chance of reproducing the same results multiple times. If you video moving objects and/or pan and scan, your bit rate changes a lot, and again you will never achieve like results. I do pan and scan to test for jitter, etc., but not to pull data from for comparisons.
On another note, how does the audio sound through an external source?
I have not checked this with the camcorder at all yet.
I am interested to see how it performs at concerts. I have seen a couple of videos of concert footage, and the audio doesn't seem too bad.
it work in my 2.3.4 with custom rom too

I would normally agree with you here, but with the leaked LTE Atrix 2, I have a feeling they're not going to include it just because that will give you another reason to go to the Atrix 2. It's very possible with our hardware, and software shouldn't matter too much (hell, if LG can do it, anyone can). I honestly think we've been shafted. With that said, my D3 Camera with build prop edits does make files that are much larger than the 720p counterparts. I don't have a 1080p display to test it on, but when I stop stills they do look more crisp (which is really the only reason to use 1080p for me [that said, maybe it's just the placebo effect]).

I would tend to agree with you here, if the leaked MB865 is indeed the Atrix 2. If it does happen to be so, Motorola will never see another red cent from me after this. I like the Atrix, but if they are about to release a 2nd derivative of this phone so soon, then this proves they knew all along while they were developing it that we would not get all that was promised on the MB860.
Tried it on my HDTV
I tried it on my Samsung HDTV and the monitor indicated the video was 1080x1920. Picture looked good to me.
Note: I did have to go into settings on entertainment center and check that I wanted 1080 playback if file was recorded higher than 720.
It basically looks like the Webtop Lapdock, but with chrome accents, and can connect to a number of high end Moto devices, such as the newly announced Atrix 2 and also our Photon, via what appears to be a dongle. Launches exclusively on AT&T on Oct. 13th followed by launches at other locations (Sprint?) later this month. No price yet.
Anyone interested? This guy is.

From a hardware standpoint, webtop performs ok when compared to an equivalent netbook. Not too long ago those single core Atom netbooks could barely play youtube vids. The eyecandy is it main hindrance and the patch work coding doesn't help.
I've already discussed possible improvements with moto and there response was pretty much "webtop's awesome, everybody loves it, the hardware can't support a real desktop enviroment and who would want that anyway." My rebuttal was to show them my Photon running, at that time, a prerelease of Ubuntop using the lapdock. "We don't get it." was what I got in return at which point I walked away.
I have a single core 1.6 intel atom netbook and im sure my photons hardware blows it out the water lol. I need a full fedora distro on this thing = perfect phone
That's pretty legit. I might actually ponder getting one if I don't get a tablet instead.

You know what, I had an Asus TF. Great device, great support. I traded it and went back to my NC running CM7 via Phirenook. 7 is such a good form factor, I slide it into my binder and have my text/web resources at my fingertips, right beside my notes. I have magazines on there and books, and with that screen...things are easy to read.
That being said, I'm hoping a 7" model of Xoom 2 is announced and or the Galaxy Tab 7 is price appropriate, because there is something incredibly utilitarian about a tablet the size of a paperback. My $.02.
Edit: Locks like the Lapdock is going to run $249. Hmmmm.

Here's what I've found so far for the specs...
4G LTE capability
Five-row QWERTY keyboard
4-inch Samsung Super AMOLED display
Android 2.3 (Gingerbread)
1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor
1.3-megapixel (front) camera
5-megapixel (rear) camera
Mobile hotspot capability
AllShare
Samsung Media Hub
Bluetooth 3.0
DivX and XviD support
Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n
Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync
Support for Cisco AnyConnect 2.1 SSL VPN
Encryption Services
Support for Sybase Afaria
So it looks like its' CPU is comparable to the Fascinate, in fact it looks like the only major differences are 4G, a slide out QWERTY keyboard, and Gingerbread built-in.
I gotta say that I'm tempted to get this. I kinda wish it had a Dual-core CPU and Tegra GPU, but I just might pull the trigger anyway. Any news on if this phone will take current Fascinate ROMs with modification?
I'd LOVE to throw CM7 on this sucker...

Why would you want this when the Nexus Prime is just a ways reach away?
This phone is pretty sub-par to what is newly released.. this will probably be the phone for the average user who wants 4G.
Well, I'm looking at it for my wife. Who sends about 700 text messages a month. She WILL NOT USE AN ON SCREEN KEYBOARD. If you're not married, then you won't understand why you can't try to enlighten your wife.
Sadly, although it should work the same as a Charge, the demo unit at Verizon didn't scroll or pinch-zoom without the page bouncing around, and I suspect it was some Verizon demo mode that was completely hosing it, and no way I could find to turn that mode off, and while the salesmen/women tried to help, they were just as ignorant as me.
I came here looking to find out if there were any problems. Instead there's just 'tude.
BTW, I think I'm getting the Galaxy Nexus for myself.
I had the stratosphere for 3 days and took it back. Keys on keyboard were to small, the bloatware was unbelievable, the battery life sucked, and everytime I tried to open the keyboard the damn thing nearly flew out of my hand. It was bad enough I opted for another fascinate, a refurb no less. That was my experience.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
So far two days into owning the Stratosphere and loving it. After getting the root applied to the phone and removing some of the bloat the phone is really running well. If you desire an QWERTY keyboard with 4G LTE on Verizon this is not a bad option. Yes its not as powerful as the upcoming devices coming out I'll be completely honest but on its own its pretty solid so far for me.

Picked up this phone yesterday. Got it from Radio Shack for FREE with a 2-year contract renewal.
So far I am really liking it. Upgraded from an HTC Droid Eris. BIG difference!
I also wish it had a dual-core processor, but this is a great phone for free. Looks like Target and Best Buy are now offering this phone for free too.
Now just need to be able to root and flash to ICS.

Can you get the Amazon Instant Video app for us? There is no native Android app besides the one pulled from the Kindle Fire which doesn't work on ICS or JB. Its here on Google Play and supposedly should be compatible with your TV:

I am vaguely interested in a nexus 9, but the driver gimping is a non starter. I do play some Tegra optimized games, and frankly I refuse to give them up because of Google handiwork. I was considering this device as an alternative to the shield tablet, but if this issue can't be fixed I'm going to stick with nvidia's offering. FYI I do already own the shield tablet, I was just considering a switch due to issues I've been having.
I too am interested in making this possible. Pretty frackin pissed at google for disabling something the hardware supports for no reason. Nvidia has it working for the shield tablet so you know the drivers and libraries are available and it would be a simple task for then to enable.
I don't know where its disabled or what all would have to be done/tried to make it work. I have complained on both Nvidias and googles forums. Currently waiting for nvidia to release the full factory images for lollipop for the shield tablet to try compare + copy files. I'm no developer but may have to learn how to compile kernels and build Roms to properly try and overcome this.
Anyone who has more knowledge of the ins and outs of linking libGL.so and such that can offer any insight on where to poke around or start would be greatly appreciated!

Latest response from someone at nvidia in the 2nd nvidia link above...
"Hi, Users
The K1 Chip does support OpenGL 4.4 and CUDA from the hardware side. The problem is that HTC made the device and Google controlled the software for that device.*
For Nexus 9, using AEP (Android Extension Pack) you can still achieve a lot graphics boost on K1 as using the modern OpenGL APIs."
So it sounds to me like google are the ones that left full GL 4.4 out. We need to petition google to have it enabled and included in future releases.
The Antutu benchmark for 3d graphics is really close between the Shield and Nexus 9. The N9 doesn't seem gimped in this regard. Is there some specific opengl functionality that was left out but doesn't show up in this benchmark?
What's really odd are the CPU performance numbers for the N9 in Antutu. I have a hard time believing the results, as the numbers seem unusually low.

Yeah they removed a ton of functionality that can speed up applications, as well as breaking compatibility with a ton of existing apps. The android extension pack is a garbage replacement and is google's apparent reasoning for removing OpenGl support. Also benchmarks should be taken with a grain of salt anyways. They are garbage for real world use.
