Porting Gingerbread to Froyo Device - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I recently bought a MP3 player than runs Android and was thinking of rooting it and running the custom ROM and all, but found NO dev for it and the latest software for it is Froyo. Just a few questions
1. How hard would it be to port over a Gingerbread ASOP/CM7 to a MP3 player? I've done some research and it seems to have an Adreno 200 and a "Cortex A8 ARMv7 CPU that runs at 800MHz", assuming that it is a Snapdragon QSD8x50. If all would run well then maybe build a ROM from source for it.
2. How would I go about getting a custom recovery for this device, such as CWM?
All feedback appreciated.
EDIT: Forgot the device name lol. Creative Zen Touch2

[Q] Need Serious Help..

Okay, the headline might be a bit dramatic, but I've used a couple of days figuring all this android stuff out.
I've rooted my HTC Hero G2 (European version). I was previously using the official 2.1 with LauncherPro modding and stuff and I liked the speed, but wanted to try out Froyo.
So I started out by rooting..
Then I installed Fusion!ROM 2.2, but after the installation I played around with the phone a little and found it to be a bit laggy. I then started reading some stuff about Kernels and overclocking.. But it's impossible for me to find a proper and well describing guide on how to do this..
I read that it's just like flashing a rom but do you do flash it to the phone after flashing the custom rom?
Of course this is not something I played around with when using the Fusion!ROM because I downloaded the version called:
Software over-clockable version... clocks reset when phone is rebooted...
And just now I found out that I needed to download some software to overclock the phone but isn't there some easier way.. for example downloading some of the other versions, but I didn't want to download because I'm afraid of breaking my phone in unawareness.
Also I read about FroydVillain 1.4 (but is this a Froyo version? Assuming so on the name, but couldn't find a statement on the download site..) and it seems to be a very popular rom including LauncherPro and ADWLauncher.. And since I liked LauncherPro on the official 2.1, I'm thinking about checking this one out.. but again I'm stuck with the kernel/overclocking question..
I thank you in advance for a guide / some good advice and as you might have noticed I'm quite new to all this stuff so I'm sorry for being a newb
1. First you need the custom rom and if you want a kernel, you should flash the kernel on top of the custom rom, just get into recovery mode and press flash zip and choose the kernel.
2. Software over-clockable version... clocks reset when phone is rebooted just means that you can overclock your rom with software like SetCPU and overclock widget, which means that you can set your desired speed in the software. And you can't break your phone by flashing a kernel or overclocking it.
3. Yes froydVillain is a 2.2 (froyo) ROM
Flash ROM > Flash Kernel
And definitely try FroydVillain (yep, it's Froyo).
Cheers!!
I didn't expect getting an answer before tomorrow but seems I was wrong.
I just flashed the FroydVillain and I'm about to try it out.
Is there any restrictions to what the HTC Hero / G2 can handle of kernels? And what are the differences between them?
On the FroydVillain page I've find a couple of different ones.. 614 / 652 / 691 and so on.. One idea on which one is fitted for a G2?
Once again.. thanks in advance!
Everybody's Hero's are different and can handle different clock speeds. 652 is safe, most can handle 691 and the 700s are pushing it for many.
Just a matter of trial and error to see the fastest yours can take.
Doesn't the initial clock speed have some limitations on the battery life time on the phone?
I also have just one question to the FroydVillain which you might be able to answer for me...
I doesn't seem like my Lock Screen works..? I've set up a pattern but nothing really happends. I've also added the Power Control widget and ensured that the lock pattern is enabled through this widget..
EDIT: I know why.. nvm

[Q] Can't use Tegrak Overclock(Free) in GSP5

Hey there fellows
My question is simple i have a international version of the SGP5 with the following especification :
Android Version: FROYO 2.2.2 (SDK 8)
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9
Firmware Version: VXKE1
I just recently rooted it using SuperOneClickv2.3.3 and the first thing i wanted to try was overclocking. I installed Tegrak Overclock (Free) from the Play shop and when i tap in "Load overclock module" i give a message box with the following text:
"Your device or kernel is not available. do you want to see available models?"
if tap yes it forward me to the tegrak blog if tap no the message box dissapear but nothing happens.
Reading thread related with overclocking everyone seems to not have this problem and they could just use it..so i'll really apreciate if anyone out there could help to overcome this and help me overclock my Galaxy player 5.0.
P.S: it'll will come in handy if you could recommend me another free application that could do the job in case tegrak don't work for me
I'd bet it's because you're still running froyo.. tegrak has worked fantastically on my gingerbread 5.0 all the way up to 1.5ghz (you have to buy ultimate, though).
OR you can flash a different kernel with OC capabilities and use cpuinfo or system tuner to overclock. Entropy's kernel works great for the 5.0, not sure about international though.
Check out the development subforum.
You'd better not use the lastest version of Tegrak Overclock. The version 0.6.0.4 will be ok
In addition, you should edit the file--biuld.prop,like:
ro.product.model=GT-I9000
It's enough?I just sure it works good on player 4.0
thanks for the suggestions i will try to use the 0.6.0.4 version of tegrak OC and will edit the file..i'm against changing froyo to gingerbread..since i did it in a 5.0 of a friend of mine and the sound quality drop noticiably..as the last method i will try flash it with another kernel.
so once again thanks for the replies

Developers Needed to Port ICS to Viewpad 7

Dear Viewpad 7 users,
Everybody says our beloved Viewpad 7 is too old for Ice Cream Sandwich but thats not true. I own a Galaxy Ace which has the same CPU only the turbo version which runs @ 800Mhz. And it runs ICS like a dream.
The Viewpad 7 is overclockable to 864Mhz and maybe with a better kernel it can go even higher. So it has enough preformance for ICS. I can even run ICS on my Phone @ 600Mhz.
So whatever they say ICS on our Viewpad 7 is possible..
Even the Legendary HTC G1 gets Ice Cream Sandwich.
You can see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym4A82ft5pw
Please Developers help us port ICS to our Viewpad!
Good news for my viewpad7. Thank you for new information.
it would be great but we still not even got gingerbread so dont wanne get mij hopes up
+1, I use my Commtiva N700 daily and would love to have ICS running on it. Bought ~3yrs ago and still beats most tablets for features!

Yes and our devices are capable of running ICS we just need a Developer to port it
Hope the good news coming very soon...
new armv6 ICS drivers have been released.

Excuse me, not to rain on the parade or something, but what's the status on those ITE driver things ? Were the sources for them ever released ?
Those seem kinda important for the whole "port ICS" project, as far as I can tell...

No problem it isnt raining yet
The driver will not be a problem, but apparently a overclocked kernel might break the ITE driver.
However ICS can run on our device without overclocking
And there probably is a way around this issue anyway
Happy to help if I can
If I can get some support getting drivers, etc. I would be more than happy to generate an ICS ROM. I am very experienced in modifying stock roms (and specifically with the ViewPad 7), and have AOSP ready for mods. I need some assistance in knowing exactly what to extract from the stock rom in order to make sure wifi, etc work... So if someone more experienced in that wants to help out as an advisor we can make this happen pretty quickly.
I need to help, but I'm noob for linux's os. Now I try to collect the infomation with my bad english and google translate. If someone have a time please post link step-by-step howto port and that will very helpful for starter and noober. Thank you.

Please help this good man in finding what he needs. For i dont know where to find it myself.
But i know its there
That is awesome they released something for ICS for VPAD7 but it doesn't solve the problem of ARM6 not being supported by flash. They have the architecture but they just stopped working on it. So basically we get the look of ICS but still on 2.2.2 level of performance? Is it an improvement or just cosmetic?

Yes ICS brings alot of improvements with it. Indeed sadly the flash support is indees limited.
PS: What do you mean ICS is released for Viewpad 7 ?
No 2.3 still
Good news but the problem that i can see developers stopped creating ROMs for VP7 - they stopped working on 2.3 and i can't find anything re that to update my VP7 so hope they will look back to create more ROMs for ICS and GB as well as i am afraid of the speed with ICS
Any news on JB for Viewpad 7
Hi Friends,
I'm a noob on Android. I was looking for someone to advise what we would need to create the JB ROM for Viewpad 7. I know we will need drivers for the chipsets on the VP7. But there must be so many other things needed as well. Is there any developer who can help or even guide. I'm willing to do what is needed. I really want to get JB on this.
What I do know is we have:
CPU: Qualcomm MSM7227
WiFi: AR6000 Chipset
GPU: ARDENO 200
I also know that the above chipsets are used on the Xperia X10 and as such the Xperia X10 has a working (if not stable) JB ROM.
SO any one out there, please help.
Thanks
Gaurav
Doesn't it help that adobe has discontinued support for flash on Android?

Is HTC Jetstream laggy with Custom ROM?

I bought a "refurb" unit off ebay for $239, but I'm now started to getting worried due to the lack of aftermarket "hacking" support here.
Assuming that I root and install a custom ROM that removes all the AT&T and HTC bloatware on Android 3.x, is the Jetstream still laggy? Will it be able to outperform a rooted Thinkpad Tablet running an optimized ICS?
Before you flash any custom ROMs make sure you install DoomLord's kernel and you'll be able to overclock all the way up to 2 ghz.
I have mine running at 1.83 ghz and it's super responsive no lag anywhere. Play with the frequencies until you find the configuration that works for you. Have fun.
Dang I should have waited and saved 10 bucks. Don't tell me your unit is dent and scratch free as well...
Even tegra3 tabs are laggy tried the Acer 510 and htc Sense UI is bloated. Try a new launcher like the GO Launcher for tabs. Very smooth but you can't use any HTC Widgets.
A question for anyone. What is the latest version of the kernel of the latest ROM RUU, which I flashed before rooting . The doomlord kernel used to root is 2.6.35.10 Is this one old and if anyone can give me an .img of the newest stock id be grateful. Thanks.

[Q] ROM zip structures, and other misc

Backstory:
I have a US Player 4.0 running a stock, official 2.3.6 ROM with root. I have been following CM9 development, as I was planning on using that as a daily. But there are still some issues and it looks like development has stopped, with all or most of the developers gone or have bricked devices. So I thought I would make a GB ROM for myself. There are people that say GB is laggy and won't run big games but I must differ. For me, the entire UI is basically locked at 60FPS and only drops when there is something running in the background, and I can play games like Dead Trigger at full graphics. Battery life is fine, too- I usually get around four hours of screen on time with a 1.2GHz overclock, WiFi on, stuff syncing every 15 minutes, a live wallpaper, and updating widgets.
Main question:
I have worked with ROMs for over a year, I have released stuff over at SDX-Developers for the Samsung Moment and its sister phones. But ROM zips for this device are structured much differently. For my phones, inside the ROM zip are two main folders: META-INF and system. Nothing out of the ordinary. But here, there is a tar file instead. Why? Is there any advantage to doing it this way?
Other questions:
Hanthesolo has a 1.5GHz CPU overclock on LinROM ICS. Is it possible to get this in a GB kernel?
Is Linaro only able to be implemented on non-stock based ROMs, and would Samsung providing YP-G1 source make a difference?
Is is possible for a small GPU overclock to be implemented in a GB kernel? I have read that the Galaxy S and Nexus S (same Exynos 3110) can do a GPU overclock from stock 200MHz to 230MHz stable, a 15% increase. I also read that it is connected to bus speed, if that helps. If I had more knowledge of this device and weren't using it as a driver I would do it myself.
(And yes, I did search before posting.)
all of the zips I recall flashing my my 5.0 have the meta-inf and system folders inside. are you sure you one you were looking at wasn't for ODIN?

I looked at both Ethereal and Icy Fusion. Both are flashable via CWM, both have a tar file inside. I couldn't take a look at the base 2.3.6 ROM for the 4.0 because the link is dead.
