I close an app, but I still need to force stop it in the Running Apps menu or it runs in the background indefinitely. I assume this is normal behaviour for Android since most apps don't have an actual exit button. Opera is the only one I know of that exits properly.

As you said, this is the normal behavior of apps in Android. Once the process is no longer doing anything and is pushed to the background, it becomes low priority and is killed whenever memory is needed. In the mean time it remains cached in memory.
There's no point in killing the app unless it's locked and eating up CPU cycles.

What dx said is right. You should not compare Android to Windows.

I couldn't find anything on this topic so I had to create a new 1 I'm sorry if I repeated.
There are always so many applications running in the background they take ram too.
Is it normal?
Has anyone found a solution if this is a problem?
What makes them running in fact what makes them start in the first place thanks in advance

use task killers, but AFAIK there is no need for that since android automatically kills unused apps.
just go to settings-application-running services and close the 1 u want to
simple
Thanks

I would suggest not using a task killer cause they suck but using android assistant its really cool and works well for a lot of things including killing tasks but more important use startup Auditor you can look up programs that are always running and in background and select to kill them at start up as well as keep them killed you can still open and use the apps it just keeps them from opening by them selves

try smart bar.
I use "autorun manager" to control which stuff works at startup.
i would suggest googling for android task killers and reading the lifehacker article about them, it is pretty well explained (sorry but I can't post links just yet)
Autorun manager isn't a task killer,so you can use it only for monitoring startup apps. This is a good alternative.
Hi every one
I downloaded the applications they are good but I didn't really got my answer.
The thing is that even when I turn the things off even after terminating the threads after a while they get started on their own why does this happens?

It sounds like you are using an app that is turning something back on. i.e. some app that uses google maps so that service is turned back on.

yeah i guess i'm obviously not sure.
right now there are atleAST 10 to 15 apps running in background.
i didnt even clicked them by any chance.
they all are consuming ram.
You could always use Titanium Backup and freeze Maps. I do this as soon as I am done with Maps - that way it is not able to start up again.

Hi!
I noticed that free games like Stand O'Food 2 and Contract Killer : Zombies are running background ALL THE TIME. Even after a reboot of the phone, even after a force close with a task killer. They come back again, and again, after a few second only. So, are they some kind of spyware?
I find this very annoying, I can't stop them unless I uninstall them.
Could anybody tell me what they are doing background and how to stop them doing this without uninstalling them?
Thanks!
Tuc
Try using "autostats" from market. Disable it from auto starting.

Nice, it works like a charm! Thanks
But here is the thing: Contract Killer : Zombies is programmed to start:
- After Sartup
- Locale changed
- Date changed
- Screen on
- Shutdown
This is insane! Why a game need to start all the time for any reason, if it is not a spyware....?

You gave it permission to. If you check the permissions for it, under "system tools" it says:
System tools
automatically start at boot
Allows an application to have itself started as soon as the system has finished booting. This can make it take longer to start the device and allow the application to slow down the overall device by always running.
Quite a strange permission for an app which seems not to need it. Also, on the market you have to click "Show all" for you to be able to see that permission. Pretty strange...
Moreover, most of the Android users don't use a task manager so they don't even notice all those apps running background...
Since I use the Autostarts app to block all useless apps running background, my phone has much more available ressources and starts faster.
Everytime I get a new phone, I'll just disable everything after root. But maps.apk is the most useless ever process.

I am using Android 2.3.6 stock rom. My phone becomes very slow every 2-3 mins. When i open a task killer it shows 44mb-51mb ram. I have to clear all the apps and still it would show me 65mb-70nb ram. Phone gets ridiculously slow. Please help me with the solution.

Yea, like Samsung Apps, such a memory hog -.-

use another task killer, or stop some services from settings->applications->running apps->from there, stop some apps you think uses your phone's memory too much.
other thing, remove any apps that uses data transfer or any background services.
First stop DATA then u need to stop some APPS like Samsung APPs. The way ur telling invokes that ur in STOCk
try to install custom ROM.
or delete some useless app.
Delete bloatware apps.

i have found a thread

reflash n try a custom rom
Are you using the stock task manager, or some app from the market (play)? If you're using an app, then begin by deleting that app. They do nothing good for your phone, quite the opposite in fact. As long as there is free ram left, then the ram is not to blame. And android should free the ram on it's own, so basically you shouldn't even need to free the ram by yourself.
If that is not the reason, then it is some app you have installed, which keeps running on the background and needlessly uses resources. The ace runs fine, even on stock rom. And that means that, either you or some app, is doing something wrong...
Hey guys,
First off i would like to thank the fuys at the forum here how to root my phone etc. Was a big help.
Now for the question:
Since the start i always went to task manager after using an app/browsing to close the app altogether.
Do you really need to do this or will pressing the home button and just minimizing the apps affect battery life?
Thanks in advance,
Tim

just dwnld a task killer app from market and install the same and set the auto kill apps frequency and ur done with
Noooooooo. Don't install a Task Killer. Android is very, very good at memory management.
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/the-view-on-task-managers-for-android/
Or....
Don't use an app that automatically kills tasks. These use more juice than they claim to save (plenty of threads about same on here since I've been a member).
Unless you know a particular app doesn't close 'gracefully' & completely shutdown when you exit it (due to poor coding, etc), or if the rom you're using has some system processes that are a bit wonky; for example, some builds of some roms in the past have had issues with media service going haywire & not auto closing after it's done its thing after boot, you shouldn't need to manually close processes.
Like MistahBungle says, no need for an app killer. using the 'back' button instead of the home button closes most apps. and for apps like browser, instead of closing page after page, hit the home button, then use task manager to kill it. Or place a shortcut to "applications manager" or "running services" somewhere convenient and manually close unnecessary apps running in background.
Aight. Thanks guys.

killing an app will simply restart it some time later which consumes more power

Yeah but i ment things like twitter, whatsapp, a game and some news apps.

Hi guys, I have 2 apps that constantly being killed by the system. One is Skype, I set it to never log out but every other time it is shutting down (Service been killed), and I need to relogin to receive again any IM or call from skype.
The other app is the FB messenger, but I can only encounter the problem with this app if I run it for the first time (Everytime I restart the phone and run this app). Then maybe after 2 or 3 tries running this app the service is running ok and never been killed again.
My question is, is this an app problem or TW/FW issue forcing those services to shutdown? From what I know, services must not be killed specially if it is always running in the background?
That depends on what you're doing. If the phone runs low on Ram it will start killin, processes.
This happens eg when playing games or browsing a lot.
I'd recommend using Im+ Pro for both, it's not only far more battery-friendly than Skype but it can push new notifications via Google c2dm so it doesnt actually have to run in the background, giving you more free Ram

Thanks for the reply, but I encounter this problem when my phone is IDLE (not using it). I'm always checking the services running in the background and I will notice that skype has been killed again and the top tray icon (of skype) is also gone.

You're not running any memory optimizers?
Go to settings->developer options and tick "show all anr".
That will show if Skype background processes force-close.

Yes, I'm not running any memory optimizer... And this always happen on Skype app only. On Facebook messenger only happens on 1st run.
So I'm thinking this is an app issue?
Have you tried the ANR as described?
Skype has lots and lots of issues, especially since ICS.
I don't even try to use it anymore, and just stick with IM+
