[Q] Cache/RAM management & apps recommendation - Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini

I've read many threads on the forum with conflicting views on Cache/RAM management. Generally, I use my phone (X10MP) only for SMS, calls and some very light web surfing (if I can find a hotspot).
Currently my RAM hovers somewhere between 60-80 MB used and 70-90 MB free.
I don't know the exact about of RAM I have though.
Just want to get some opinions if there is a need for me to clear the cache in the RAM. There are many applications that are cached in the RAM which I do not use very often. These range from things such as Media, Google Playstore and a few other things.
Is it possible to prevent these applications from being cached in the RAM? Especially since I do not use them often. I'm aware of apps that can kill such cached apps but the reviews for these management apps are kind of mixed.
Secondly, I'm just trying to fish for some suggestions on QR Code reader. Anyone have good recommendations? The ones on the Market have much mixed reviews so I just wanted to get a second opinion.
Any other applications that are beneficial/essential to help the X10MP run smoothly while not sacrificing battery life?
I'm currently using nAa kernel with MiniCM7 2.20 flashed.
Browser -> Dolphin HD
Gallery -> QuickPic
File Explorer -> Root Explorer (I can't seem to attach files via email using this though.)
Thank you =)

[Q] How Can I Free More Ram?!?!?!?!

hi guys, i notice in manage applications / running servises that i have many applications that they are running without i open them, and when i stop them ( forced to stop ) in about 1-2 minues they are running again, this applications is social hub, maps, facebook...
and i'am using right now (without connection to the internet) 365mb ram!!!
how can i close that programms to safe more ram?!?!?!
Thanks.
Advanced Task Killer, now that's not advised in Android!
Alternatively you can use Titanium Pro and freeze some unwanted apps, that'd save some.
PS- Also found this app,

Don't bother about it (if you really wanna bother about this, then start by learning memory management in Android/Linux before drawing incorrect conclusions)).
The RAM is used for caching applications etc, it improves speed. If you start a huge game that needs all memory then the game will gets its memory anyway.
So don't worry, be happy with your phone instead
thanks, but its normal that ram that it uses?! you how many ram do you use?!?!?!
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Best way to Optimize 512mb RAM on Xperia Ray

It always happens that crashes and errors in the system and slow performance are the problems occurred because of the full or nearly full memory. Issue of memory overload the Smartphones are not immune. It can be avoided, if you know how to maintain phone’s storage space. If your phone has large memory then it will run very smoothly.
For performance of the phone to improve you can delete the cache from time to time which in turn will lead to the better performance of the phone. It can be done by using an application Apps2SD which clears both your cache and histories which are not necessary after some time. By clearing cache it frees up the internal space which there by leads to improved performance in the phone.
1.Try turn OFF (a)Sync(b)Wifi(c)GPS by this a constant process will be stopped and which will also improve your battery life and there by making it more use able, bcoz apps like gmail, contacts, maps constantly updates.
2.Uninstall apps which u don't prefer using. Further checking apps which eat more ram is to look in setting/apps/running and try freezing them.
3.Install task manager which provide operation of auto killing of apps in between time interval.
My Config ROM: FXP149-CM10
Kernel : flykernel 0.7a
launcher : ilauncher 2.2.1
Hope this Helps.
what task manager are you using?
it may helpful for some beginner
but i dont think it helps a lot......
just try Ram manager.
if it useful u can buy full version with more flexible option.
It's work for me.

Advanced Task Manager Pro 2.1.5
1. Enable auto kill
2. Enable Regular set frequency to 10min
3. Startup kill
make sure not enabling system wide apps in the list
Free RAM is nothing but wasted RAM. Oh please, android works totally different from your Windows PC.
You can get performance by removing/freezing Unwanted apps, bloatware etc.
Using a Task Manager/Killer may give you a slow performance while Gaming etc.
You should not use a taskmanager, it juse makes your phone slower.

Ok taskmanager are memory hog when coupled with lot of background services eg: widget on screen, social syncing etc.
But if you have organized set of application install with active task managers, it helps solves unecessary lags.
I have 200mb RAM available most of the time ... Installed 40+ apps packages other the default.
Frequently play games like Asphalt 7, Dead Trigger, ShadowGun DeadZone, Real football, Real Racing, GT Racing, CS Portable.
Governer : Smartassv2 - 364- 1209 mhz when active use [ Powersave - 249 - 576 mhz when in my pocket]
I/O scheduler : deadline
ROM: FXP 149 , kernel Fly kernel 0.7a

yes exactly, at the beginning i also tried to use taskmanager, but then i google Android RAM and found guides who say the same. and it seem logic for me. so just let it be. no need to use such apps
and custom roms can drain battery more fast,so dont wonder.
first you should check your mobile and wifi signals and stuff like that.
Use ram expander
Create 1020 mb memori swap

doesn't that damage your sd card? and if you use it with a class 4 one, won't it slow down the phone?

Thats not really true, taskmanagers doesn't make your phone faster, and free ram is not necessarily good, android manages the ram in another way than for an example Windows. Android kills or puts processes in a kind of freezed mode instead of leaving them running all the time, and when a app needs more ram, android will automatically kill apps so that you can play games and so on.
If you want more free ram, you should use Supercharger or Ram Manager Pro instead, because their alot better than using a taskmanager.
Read this article about it:

Are you serious? I expected more. This is just a very basic guide you can find on any android forum.

Switching off wifi and gps when not in use is just a godamn basic when you use a smartphone, i don't even see the point of opening a topic to say that. Are there still people keeping everything on all the time ?
Task managers are not required since 4.0 at least, if not 2.3 if i remember right. Free ram is useless on Android, i never got this obsession about having free Ram. Many 4.1 and 4.2 custom roms leave less free ram than the official 4.0 and are still way smoother and fast.
This topic is complete bul****, and i'm not even a developer knowing that.
This thread should be moved to /dev/null , because its nothing new in it, and there is alot better tutorials on how to optimize your Xperia Ray.
dont use task managers or killers. Because there is battery drain.
here is my tweaked rom. i have HUGE RAM in first reboot
no init.d scripts, i have not task manager or task killer.

Maybe yes
Recomended use with class 6 above..
I have used on my ray
With 16 gb class 10
And its ok i guess

Startup manager is the best
Just install startup manager and unmark apps from starts automatically during startup... Really works
No need care about number of apps installed:fingers-crossed:
swap ram expander
Adding swap ram (no need for much, 300 to 500 mb is ok) makes such a difference. Since I've started using it, I can multitask and I don't get the big slowdowns I was used to. No blank screen when returing to the launcher or horrible wait times under Chrome. From my experience, Android phones with 512mb of ram generally struggle a lot because they always have to erase and reload ram pages so they don't exceed it. I have a class 10 32gb sd card btw.

[Q] Why do background apps in Android consume so much memory?

Hello folks,
I just randomly checked the memory usage on my Android device and now, I have one question:
Why do some background processes use incredibly much RAM?
For example there are the Facebook app and the Messenger app, together using about 30MB of memory while actually doing nothing. Same for VLC: According to Android Settings there are 7MB used by VLC, while it does nothing. And VLC doesn't even has to check for any new messages.
Btw. MPC-HC on my computer uses 5MB of RAM when not playing any video.
Then again, there is one question left:
The memory values above are read from Android Settings -> Apps -> Active. When using the app "Memory Usage" the values are significantly higher: Facebook app uses 50MB, Facebook Messenger 40MB. VLC seems to use 21MB.
Now, I have two questions:
1. Why are the values in Settings / Memory Usage different?
2 and more important: Why do Apps on Android consume that much memory when actually not doing anything?
Thanks in advance for information,
Wolle

[Q] How much RAM left is enough for normal running?

Our i717 has 1GB ram, but after installing some basic apps, such as Whatsapp, weather, news and stock market apps, google chrome, apex and facebook etc., I only have about 280MB of ram left? After running one or two apps, I have less than 180MB remaining, and openning any new apps is much slower than before. Anyone has any ideas or did some research on what is the minimum ram that should be maintained without much deterioration in speed or performance?
I would suggest taking a look at this article found here

[Q] Multitasking in Xperia Z Ultra?

I use my Z Ultra mostly for playing games, especially Summoners War. And because I'm a guild leader, I use LINE to coordinate attacks with my guildmates so I switch between the game and LINE in certain occasions. The moment I updated to Lollipop, I noticed that I can't do that totally anymore. Once I press home to minimize my game, write a message in LINE then get back to the game, it's already gone and it restarts. It also happens in Kitkat but not only when I have too many background processes running (Email app, Facebook, Messenger, etc.).
I heard there's some memory leak issue with Android 5.0, is that the case here? Is there a way to prevent my game from closing?
If you are using the stock ROM it isn't about the memory leak because Sony has fixed it, it is about Sony services and apps are very resource hungry and they are eating the RAM. You can disable some apps or services (be careful!) which you don't use and thus save some memory. There is a guide in Themes & Apps section with apps that can be disabled, you can follow it to free some RAM.

... which ones and how much? Because i see here >800 MB reported as free. I suspect neither the game and the messaging software do not use that much.
It's just lollipop being aggressive about killing processes whenever it feels like it>
Also, where did you hear that sony fixed the memory leak?
The memory leak issue is being discussed here.

I don't know exactly which apps and how much RAM they use because I don't use stock anymore but facebook and messenger combined can use about 300 MB, not mentioning the game. That 800 MB (although I don't believe it, hard to achieve even on AOSP) is "free" only by its name. More than half of it consists of cached apps which can be closed to free more memory, but it is still being used. You can see it when you go into settings > apps > running and switch the view. And about the memory leak, it is somewhere in Cross-dev section, a thread by Iagucool I think, he had compared some smali files and Sony apparently had fixed the leak in their firmware.
Regards
neither facebook nor messenger are sony's apps.
cached memory is free memory in the sense that it is not used at the moment the system is asked about it, much like any other kind of free memory. That part of memory that is cached, as per android's own description, is available for new processes that ask for memory.

Erm sorry but no, cached memory is used memory but it can be freed when system is running out of the really free one, so it has an ability to be freed whenever system wants to, thus labeled as "free".
Regards
you said "sony services and apps" eat memory... i asked you which ones... and you said facebook and messenger. Neither of those are sony services or apps.
mind you, "sony services and apps" does not mean the same thing as "apps and sony services"
