[Q] replacing a file in /system/ after phone won't boot - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

alright i have this problem and i am quite panicking now.
i will set everything straight , i hope someone reading the forums can help me asap !
- have a sgs2 unbranded (hk)
- has ICS 4.0.3 stock rom, rooted.
- i don't remember if usb debug mode was enabled
- i messed up in some way with the file /system/build.prop but there is a backup in /system/ called build.prop.bak
- phone doesn't boot anymore as it's stuck at the logo
- recovery and download modes work however
#need a way to delete the build.prop and replace the bloody file with the one backupped. I would like to avoid having to format the phone as i do not remember when was my last kies backup...
what i tried:
-adb shell: it doesn't work. for some stupid reasons the drivers won't be recognized (i have download android sdk and usb drivers), but when i plug the phone in recovery windows just says Device Unknown and even if i update drivers manually it would say that current ones are functioning so no need to update.
if i connect the phone to usb while it's stuck at boot logo, it would recognize the device through samsung drivers (except MTP of course, that would give error).
in both cases adb shell doesn't list any connected device: even if i kill-server and start-server it still doesn't list anything.
-tried using droid explorer in both frozenboot mode and recovery mode, doesn't see anything.
-tried using that other program called SuperOneClick or something like that, that has a "check drivers" button in advanced: if the phone is in recovery pressing the button doesn't do anyhing; if the phone is in frozenboot it asks to download and install some drivers but when i press yes a message appears with " no more data is available " !
i tried this procedure on both win7x64 and winXPx86: same results. reading around , someone says that adb shell will never work if usb debug is de-actived, like i said i cannot remember if that's the case.
-zip package: i created a package to try and overwrite the file with a custom working one i got. i put the package in the root of the micro sd , put the sd in the phone and booted in recovery.
but when i am in recovery the bloody CWM 5.0.2.7 says error to mount /sdcard, or E: could not mount /sdcard , same if i try to mount/unmount /sdcard. if i go to mount external usb card or whatever it says that a file or a lib (cant remember the exact message) was not found.
i have no more ideas of how to solve this, please be patient :<
edit: is there a way to soft format the system folder so that i don't have to properly wipe all my user data and it only affects the system without other contents?

If adb doesn't work hen you are in trouble, better download some non wipe rom and flash it over the existing rom so that your user data will still be there.

can you expand on this?
give any suggestion/example?
isn't there a soft temp rom for emergencies like this that you can just start, make modifies to fix and reboot (similar to the process to boot ubuntu on windows, fix issues and then restart normal windows? )
i would so like to make adb work.. but how.!!!

probebly will not work but try backing up of your ROM from CWM working or not..then just back up current one...
you can restore apps & data lateron from nandroid backup with some application like titanium backup donated version.

i made a backup . but since the external sd card isn't found by the recovery, now the backup is sitting on the internal memory.
the problem is that, if i flash something with odin now, won't odin wipe everything in the internal memory killing my backup as well?

nope....it will be there dont worry,
just check one more option, go to storage and mount, there is one option mount usb storage, after connecting your phone to PC just mout that and check, are you able to access the SDcard from the computor ot not, if yes, just copy paste your backup to the computor.
then flash a firmware from ODIN

Did the very same thing myself yesterday.. Most ICS-roms from Samsung is non-wipe, so you can just flash it over again with Odin.. Then you just need to root and make customizations (if any) again

could you be more specific on the process ? can you suggest me one to flash with odin ? i need to enter the OS , transfer my backup on my hard disk and then restore the whole thing.
currently my kernel is CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-PROPER-v5.4-CWM5.tar
and my firmware is GT-I9100_BRI_I9100ZSLPE_I9100OZSLPE_I9100ZSLPE.tar

you try to reflash once more CF-Root (.TAR)only from odin
then check "E: cant mout...error" is rectified or not.... also check booting or not,
still no hope...you flash the same firmware again and Cf-root, your SD card data will be there for sure as far as our expereicne till now..

first part of your comment: i tried reflashing the kernel; no changes. same errors
second part: shall i try using the same firmware from my previous post then?? not other roms? after that i will put the root and check if internal memory is still there. if it is i will copy it on my hd and restore.
if it is not there anymore..............

so the end of the story.
thanks to anyone who helped.
the resolution was much easier than everything else.
opened odin, pda loaded my same firmware which was the HK stock update to ICS and reflashed.
what it did was apparently and overhaul of the system folder, that's it.
any data was still there, as well as the backup that i did and all my apps etc etc etc.
however especially at first it looked a bit unstable, with processes failing randomly. now it seems it has stabilized a bit, but still when i try to run a Kies backup, the phone kies process dies and the backup gets stopped.
i still don't know how to fix this, but i'll be looking into it.
so, the morale out of this was at least for me: if there is some **** up within the system folder just reflash the same rom installed. i feel so stupid now for having made such a fuss when the solution was so easy and straightforward

NICE that you finaly came across and able to boot , now you make the Titanium back of your all apps and data transfer to PC....forget the system data.
and move to a nice stable ROM

"Unfortunately, wssyncmlnps has stopped"
anybody knows about this?

RA-hero-v1.5.3.1 can't get ADB access, device malfunctioned(unknown device)

Hi,
Hope someone can help, about this problem. But I think all it's comes down to now is getting ADB access via Amon_RA recovery rom, as I've tried everything I can do... link to previous post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=642468
I'm running Window 7 Pro x64, previously the ADB was working, but after setting up some ext partition option accidentaly, (I think that it's linked to that), i've tried all options I know of by trying to manually install the drivers and removing them completely etc...
Main points, I can still access recovery image, and also the bootloader. I've succesfully flashed custom roms etc... before. And phone does not boot to rom(that's because I think it didn't install correctly, not sure)
So, i'm sort of lost now, just wondering if any developers here would kindly help or put me out my misery!
re partition your ext(2/3 for Eris base rom) ext4 might not work on Eris.
if you still facing problem remove the swap & only remain the ext partition for A2SD.
edit: and please update to v1.6.2 for the recovery***
Thanks for you response but I can't do anything within the recovery image, some options keep saying please use adb to carry out the process, but I can't get adb to detect on the phone anymore. Also I can't update the latest recovery image, as i'd need adb access....
I can't see why this is happening... perhaps its the SD card that's messed up? I could repartiotion using linux using gparted or something, but I don't know how the Hero set's up the partion.
When I try to recover using nandroid I get messages like unable to mount E:SDCARD etc...
Any clues?
did you do a dalvik wipe? y not try remove the ext partition & try restore previous nandroid?

HELP!! Signature verification failed w/ non-official Cyanogenmod 10 ROM for Sanei N10

Hello everyone. Let's see if anybody can help me, because I'm pretty stuck with this.
Note: I've already searched high and low for solutions to the "Signature verification failed", but they either don't work or don't apply here.
I've tried to install the following ROM from xda-developers in a Sanei N10:
Unofficial CyanogenMod 10 for many AllWinner A10 tablets
I've installed it following the usual procedure:
- Press Vol+ and Power to get the Recovery menu
- Select Wipe data/factory reset
- Select Wipe cache
- Install the three ZIP files: "cm10_a10_20120913.zip", "gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip" & "n10_compatibility_1.2.1.zip"
The problem is, even though the first ZIP with the ROM installs successfully, the second one (the one with Google's apps) refuses to install, showing instead the message "signature verification failed". The same happens with the third ZIP (N10 compatibility).
So the installation doesn't actually finish. If I reboot the tablet, it runs Cyanogenmod 10, but the touchscreen doesn't work (I have to plug a USB mouse to interact with the operating system).
So what do I do to avoid the dreaded "signature verification failed" message? Just in case if it's of any help to identify the problem, I'll mention that I can see the Android bot laying down with a red triangle with an exclamation when entering the Recovery menu.
I've tried to use the ROM Manager which is preinstalled with Cyanogenmod 10, but when choosing "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" it says that "The SD Card needs to be mounted to use ROM Manager". Of course my MicroSD is properly mounted (I can see its files in the card from console, from the "Terminal Emulator"). I think this happens because the MicroSD is mounted in /storage/sdcard1 instead of in /storage/sdcard0, but I can't change that. I can't download APKs from the browser, either, because it also says something similar about not being able to access the SD (even though it's correctly mounted and can see it mounted from Settings > Storage).
I've also tried the CyanogenMod A10 ROM available in this page, which is more recent (October instead of September):
http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/3870...mod-10-tweaks/
But the same happens.
I've even tried installing the CWM Recovery ROM, but it doesn't let me installing that from the Recovery either (same message about the "signature"), and with Odin3 it doesn't work either because I don't know how to reach the "download mode", which is needed for Odin3. Pressing Vol+ and Power I get the Recovery, but not the Download mode. Does anyone know how do I get to the download mode in the Sanei N10?
Any idea about how to solve this? Right now I have a tablet with no touchscreen and not even Google applications (so I don't even have the Play Store), so it's practically worthless (at least the WiFi works). How can I get this tablet back to being usable?
Did you fix this? I want to get this tablet and most likely want to root and rom it but if this is the case...

No, unfortunately I still couldn't fix it
There's nobody here in xda-developers who can help me? Surely somebody must know enough to help me find a solution.
I've tried creating a symbolic link from /storage/sdcard1 to /storage/sdcard (it doesn't exist right now), but it just says "link failed Read-only file system" (I was root, by typing "su" and clicking "Allow" in the Superuser window). So, I can't create symbolic links even while being root user? I need this link so ROM Manager can detect my SD Card (it says it's not mounted but it really is, but in "/storage/sdcard1").
Also, the gapps package linked in the ROM page above seems not to be properly signed, even though it has that "-signed" suffix in its name. I always get that "signature verification failed" error message. But now I've tried downloading a more recent gapps package (gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip) and that package finally worked! BUT, even though it apparently installed successfully, I still can't see any Play Store icon, nor any other Google app (Gmail, etc.). Why? Those icons should appear after installing gapps, shouldn't they? Maybe this newer "gapps" package is somehow incompatible with this tablet? (is this even possible?).
Also, even though I can now install the newer "gapps" package, I still can't install the "n10_compatibility_1.2.1.zip" file (I still get "signature verification failed" for that ZIP), which, I guess, contains the drivers needed for the N10 so the touchscreen works (currently it doesn't, and I have to use a USB mouse to use Android in this tablet). Any ideas? I'm getting tired of trying 9485738489754935627 things with no good result . I guess Android is showing here its Linux roots...
I think the key here is managing to install a new Recovery ROM that doesn't care about signing, but how do I do that? I can't install through ROM Manager because I get that error about the SDCard needing to be mounted to use it (and it's really mounted), and then I can't create the /storage/sdcard symbolic link because I get that "link failed Read-only file system" error. Also, I can't use Odin3 because I can't manage to put this tablet in Download Mode. Aaaargh! There's no good solution
Any ideas?
Bump!
I have same problem, i think that we need a different compatibility file, or perhaps if we could open install any app like Novo7 we could fix it... hope that anyone have the solution.

Thanks for replying. If we could find some way to install a new Recovery, then we'd probably by able to get the N10 Compatibility file working. This can't be that hard to do, but I've tried lots of things, and none of them worked...
Anyone?
Please, someone help!

Please let me know if you find a solution to this. Thanks!
I'm having the same issue with [ROM][CM10/10.1][21 Dec] Codename Lungo
Well, at last I could finally solve the problem thanks to chris5s from this forum.
These are the steps that worked for me:
1. Download the latest ClockWorkMod for Allwinner A10 tablets from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1802268
2. Put all three files in the ZIP inside the root of a MicroSD card and insert it in the tablet
3. Check from the Terminal app inside the tablet to see if the MicroSD card is mounted in /sdcard (just type "ls /sdcard").
4. If the "ls" command doesn't show anything (that's what happened in my case), then you must modify the "install-recovery.sh" file and replace all instances of "/sdcard" with "/mnt/extsd".
5. With the proper "install-recovery.sh" file, run the commands specified in the above xda link (in my case the card is in "/mnt/extsd" instead of "/mnt/sdcard" as the original example shows):
su
cd /mnt/extsd
sh install-recovery.sh
sh reboot-recovery.sh
6. The tablet will then reboot to CWM recovery. Then follow the regular steps to install Cyanogenmod (wipe plus install ROM + GApps + Compatibility). This time the Recovery menu won't care about the files being unsigned and will install them right away!
I hope this helps somebody else!
hey i just registered because i have been having the same exact problem i read that you fixed it but how can i get in to the tablet if im not able to do any movements after it boots ???

ok so im in the terminal app but what do you mean by modify the install sh file ???
Hello "lesanei"
I just noticed your posts. Let's see if I can help you...
The touchscreen doesn't work because the appropriate drivers were not installed (because of the "signature verification failed" issue). So you need to connect a USB mouse (and preferably a keyboard too) to the tablet. The Sanei N10 should come with a USB to micro-USB adapter. If you don't have it, you can buy it for cheap here.
Since there is only the one USB input in the tablet, you can't connect two USB devices at the same time. What I did use is a wireless mouse+keyboard combo which only needed one USB dongle for reception. If you don't have that, you can just connect a USB mouse and type with the on-screen-keyboard using the mouse. It's annoying, but it works
When I say "modify the install-recovery.sh file", I mean the file inside "cwm_recovery_6.0.1.2_a10.zip". You can modify it from your PC if you prefer. You don't have to do it in the tablet if you don't know how to use the "vi" editor (command line editor). Just open the "install-recovery.sh" file in Wordpad (do not use the Notepad, because it doesn't support Unix line endings so it shows the file incorrectly) and replace all instances of "/sdcard" with "/mnt/extsd". So the file contents should look like this:
#!/system/bin/sh
if busybox test ! -f /mnt/extsd/recovery.img; then
echo no /mnt/extsd/recovery.img
exit 1
fi
cat /mnt/extsd/recovery.img > /dev/block/nandg
sync; sync; sync
echo done
Click to collapse
Then place all three files ("recovery.img", "install-recovery.sh" and "reboot-recovery.sh") into your MicroSD card. Then safely extract it from your PC, insert it in the tablet and type this from the Terminal:
su
cd /mnt/extsd
sh install-recovery.sh
sh reboot-recovery.sh
Click to collapse
Then follow the regular steps to install Cyanogenmod and this time all files should install sucessfully, so when rebooting, touchscreen and everything else will work.
Let me know if it works for you.

[Q] Recover data from a broken OS

Hi all.
I've just installed some app that broke down my S3 stock OS.
The OS was rooted, and I gave the crappy app superuser access...
It was supposed to change the DPI setting, but now it's boot-looping over the Samsung logo.
Now I'd like to recover my data, photos and stuff...
CWM Recovery 5.5.0.4 is installed.
I can start a backup, but it won't complete since I don't have a large enough SD card at hand (it's a 32 GB SGS3 with a bunch of large videos...).
I don't care about the movies, just the photos, but there's no option for a selective backup...
I also tried updating CWM to a more recent release with Odin (downloaded .img and tar'ed it...), but it won't go further than SetupConnection.
I've not tried a factory reset of anything else yet...
Is there a way I can still recover my data, or should I just get over it and try to flash the whole thing back with Odin?
Thanks for your help.
Adb backup?
maybe reinstalling the ROM can fix it ?
The other thing you can try is adb pull /build prop, edit LCD density back to 320 and adb push it back
Thanks for your answers.
adb looks like the way to go, but I never managed to get it working on my computers.
"adb devices" won't list any, "adb shell" returns "error: device not found".
USB debugging was enabled in the OS.
Is the phone supposed to be in recovery mode or download mode? None works... (Also tried with the OS running before it started crashing)
Is there a setup guide somewhere?
Actually, working with Android on Windows (XP x64) has been a total nightmare so far.
On my main computer, Device Manager loops forever on device detection / driver installation, and successive driver installation/uninstallation/reinstallation mangled WMP10 completely (and since it's tied to Windows, I can't reinstall it).
On other computers, driver installation went fine, I hardly managed to copy movies to the phone through MTP / WMP, and never managed to copy anything back.
I only ever managed to move files over wifi, but that's at wifi speed, not USB2 speed...
And now that I gave Kies a try (stayed away from it so far), it keeps eating 100% CPU whenever I run it.
I had that adb problem then I installed android command centre, and bam, it worked! Will try and find link for you....brb
Finally managed to run adb on the computer with Kies installed.
I'll look into this.
Here go
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36671130
Can't use adb pull/push anymore: in a previous attempt to reduce the nandroid backup size, I formated the system and cache partitions.
Then I managed to run a full backup with CWM Recovery, but can't find my files in there.
The backup files only contains application data, but the sdcard folder is totally missing.
Well, it appears the problem indeed was in build.prop.
My backup has 2 files: build.prop.bak and buid.prop.temp.
.bak has the old density, .temp has the new value.
Somehow the app failed to rename build.prop.temp to build.prop, and made the system unbootable.
adb backup won't work either: it's waiting for a confirmation on the phone, and doesn't seem to work in recovery mode.
Now browsing /data/media with adb shell !
I had to mount /data manually (in recovery), I guess the same is true for a recovery backup, and that's why I couldn't find my files.
Think I'll manage to get it all back now.
Thanks a lot slaphead20.
I was just about to wipe away all these family pictures!

I'm not a smart man don't know where to go from here with soft bricked HTC One (AT&T)

I'm not a smart man don't know where to go from here with soft bricked HTC One (AT&T)
Was experimenting with different stuff on my phone and currently on S-Off HBoot 1.44. I was tried to flash a new 4.4 ROM over and somewhere in there something went wrong. Went to backup file and everything was fine, decided to just try and wipe everything on phone (made backup files of everything and have the files in a folder on desktop) and that's where my troubles began. Taking advice from a friend of mine I ended up relocking the bootloader (mistake #1), so of course everything on phone was wiped. I was trying to do adb sideload to push a new rom after unlocking the bootloader again. The computer sees my device in adb on the cmd window. Says:
HT359W917890 recovery
but in sideload in TWRP it says:
E: Unable to mount
I'm guessing its because I no longer have the files on the phone or a stock anything on it. Please help me out here been messing around with it for about 3 hours now running in circles. I'm sure I'm missing an easy step in here but I've been reading all over and am starting to think this **** is pretty hopeless at this point.
Put the rom you are wanting to flash in the folder you are using to open the cmd window and type
adb push nameofrom.zip /sdcard/
I wake up from a nap, see your reply and try it out....now computer isn't seeing my device in adb again. This is so frustrating, back to square one I suppose
okay rebooted the phone and device is showing in adb again (yay) pushed the file through but I'm still getting the
E: Unable to mount '/data'
E: Unable to mount internal storage
any suggestions here?
SOLVED
All solved solved the E: Unable to mount issue by going into TWRP settings and doing a format data wipe. The pushed the file from the computer and voila all solved, I really appreciate the help man!

Galaxy Nexus maguro i9250 bootloop after error message whatsapp

Hi everyone, forgive me for my bad english...in this day i'm freaking out because it happend an unexpected thing. 4 days ago in the evening i looked that was an error message about whatsapp in the home screen, then i open the app and appeared that chat list got problem and to solve that i need to restore backup or i get lost chat. The device was connected to wifi house, but i had whatsapp backup on my phone. I searched on internet and on official whatsapp page i red it was possible as an error. To solve that need to restore last backup. I done it but while the loading has started, after a few minutes the devices shut down and reboot. It's arrived to the logo of the ROM and then shut down again and reboot. i undestand it was a bootloop. Two years ago i install android kitkat because the device can't received android 4.4 and i don't want stay with 4.3. Everything fine. After an year the device goes in the bootloop, but i don't know why, so i decided to format data ad restore kitkat again. Before that i can transfered some data because i saw that if device was connected on the pc it not gone in bootloop. This year another problem but more little. The device sometimes reboots so i do a backup with titanium backup and then wipe everything including internal storage because on the boot after flashing the ROM the device can't memorized anything. In that occasion i don't reboot the device because i wiped internal storage so everything. Connected usb-device to the phone, copy gapps, rom, twrp and super su. Reboot and the smartphone was reborn. Whit titanium backup i restored all data. This time the thing is very very different and more difficult. In my opinion probably i could download a virus with whatsapp, usually it is connected to a link into a message sended by a contact in whatsapp, or happened something during the restore of backup of whatsapp. The device goes constantly in bootloop but i can entry in recovery mode. i noted that can't see the gapps, rom e supersu file in the sdcard like the other times. They are only in the data\media\0 folder. Everythime i try to copy something not in the sdcard, it goes on an error about a netstat file i found in the data\system\netstats folder. It's a file short, different by the others. I red that netstat files can be deleted but this file can't be deleted by using twrp>advanced mode>file manager>name of the file>delete. Before try to do another format data or again a total format of internal storage like the other time, i need to know if this procedure can resolve the problem. This time i was not prepared so the last backup is about six months ago. In this months i inserted new contacts and this time i don't sincronized my contact list with my google account like the other times because i couldn't image to be in this situation. I try to delete the file using adb but my phone is not recognized so the serial number doesn't appear. List of deviced attached is empty. In this case i can't activate the developer funcstions by tipping in the device information into the phone because it goes in bootloop. On the pc i have usb-drivers, but now into the phone there's android 4.4 not 4.3 like the first time i do the procedure to unlock the device. So with adb don't see serial number but the pc just see the device like google nexus adb interface. Copying file as contact or dialer or data about apps because are all in the data folder, appears an always an error about netstat and the red failed written. just copy from sdcard folder to usb external device this not happen, what can i do?
I done a nandroid backup because i know that with titanium backup i can restore data i want to restore, but also in this case could appear the same message error about netstat file? All data are been copied on the external usb deviced and then on the pc, but i don't know if the problem will be present again. so if i try to restore data with titanium backup and the problem reappers i don't know what to do.
Here we are some information about my phone. I hope someone in this fantasctic and big community about android developers can help me to solve this very big problem. if i thinking about i've done i feel so stupid because probably i could avoid this problem.
i forget to say also i tried to fix permission, wipe davilk cache and cache, copy log to sd (to see if there's another error but i don't know how to do). After all of this passages, everytime appears the same error.

Update
pc see the device in fastboot mode launching cmd fastboot devices. Get out the serial number. It doesn't work launching cmd adb devices. List of device is empty. On the pc i have two file about usb drivers downloaded by samsung support site. If i change the usb driver folder in sdk with the new samsung usb driver i just download, may i permit to see the phone with adb? or should i try to unistall device recognized as google galaxy nexus adb interface and repeat the installation of google usb drivers with an unknown device?
update
i'm losting hope. I tried also nexus root toolkit (NRT) by wugfresh. Before the programme i can't see the phone with adb, after unistall and reinstall the driver i can se the device. But here the bad news... i can't copy from the pc into the sd folder using windows and i don't know why because pc see the device, i can see the folder inside sdcard internal storage but can't copy from the pc to the phone. Fastboot and adb mode work. I've done a flash stock + unroot using NRT. Everything fine but then phone goes in bootloop and not with the stock logo so Nexus, with the Rom logo intalled instead. The NRT message says that the bootloop could appen so wait. After 20 minutes power off the device. So i try to do format data from TWRP; procedure works with blu written succesfull but there's the same problem E (encrypted or error?) unable to stat data/system/netstat file and the number of the file. So i try to wipe the internal storage. Succesfull but again red written E: same up. Everything i try to do nothing change. Internal storage stuck always the same MB, TWRP 2.8.7 always present, i can't flash 3.0.2. Can't also remove enctrypted data with NRT because is uncheck. Have i throw away the phone? The E unable to stat data/system/netstat with the number of the file goes out everytime because during the process for example about format data check out updating data partition and then E: blablabla also with succesfull written, not failed.
