[Q] SGS2 won't update to ICS (or anything at all) - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My SGS2 won't update at all..
I've previously used Odin and one of the official original unrooted roms in here; and now my stats are today:
PDA:KI8 / PHONE:KI4 / CSC:KI2 (ODK)
(ROM with Danish language)
I really would like to get ICS, but Kies states that "this firmware is not upgradeable via Kies" ?
I have Heimdall (on my mac) and possibly access to Odin (via a windows pc) - and I'd like NOT to root my phone; but I'm just waaay to much a noob to figure this one out - but I'd like to get ICS.
I need you wise peoples help (again)
Thanks In Advance

That means as of yet their is no Upgrade on Kies for your phone or product codes etc match nothing on the server as its mixed up firmware .

Strangely ICS stock roms are plastered all over the XDA development forum General section .

So.. Mixed firmware ?
How would i go about unmixing it so that everything is as it should be ?
-I mean I've only downloaded a .pit file earlier as instructed on the odin thread and running that through odin

Do not use PIT .
Flash your original saved firmware .
jje

Not use .pit you say..
So you mean I should have had the PDA, CSC & PHONE files all seperately ?
Anyways - this just proves that we noobs shouldn't mess with this; my saved firmware got erased last year when i had a crash and failed to keep a backup ;-)
Thank you for you quick and precise answers. I'll see if I can get those files from someone :-D

ICS single file stock roms are posted in general .
jje

..and all the files i download refuse to run under heimdall because of "malformed tar" and fail under odin for "cant write file" and both soft bricks my phone.
I've found one (1) working older file on an external drive; so for now I'm stuck with 2.3.4 and baseband XXKI4, kernel XXKH3 and build XXKH3 :-/

[Q] Orange UK Stock ROM

Hey everyone, Merry Christmas
Since the day I've brought my GSII I've been running VillainROM. It's great and I don't have any issues with it but I live in an area of exceptionally low signal. My network provider is Orange and I believe the Galaxy SII supports their UMA Signal Boost app that will allow me to connect to the Orange network via my home broadband (over WiFi) and thus give me signal for once!!
I've done some research and it doesn't seem like it's possible to just download an .apk of the Signal Boost app, so the only thing I can think of doing is completely wiping my phone and putting the latest official Orange UK/Galaxy SII ROM on it. While I love the benefits of a custom ROM, signal is more important to me (it is a phone, after all....)
I've never had to revert to stock, so could some kind soul please give me a guide on what I need to do? Where do I get the latest version of the Orange ROM? Do I flash it in the same way I would flash a custom ROM? If that's the case, so I then lose root access and recovery mode?
And finally...will my Tiny Tower game save be lost?? Or does Mobage keep game progress on their servers?? (Priorities, eh! haha)
Sorry for all the questions, any help that you can provide would be awesome.
EDIT- One final question I have just thought of. How do I also get the modem back to the original version? Will flashing everything back to stock solve this? I basically want to reset everything so that it's like I just purchased the phone from Orange.
One a mod has been posted recently ref UMA Signal Boost
Two Orange rom in the branded provider roms post flash via Odin .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928
You can always flash a different modem on a custom rom .

Thanks for the quick reply
Sorry for my stupidity but I still don't really know what ROM I should be flashing from the list...there appear to be three: BVKE3, BVKG3 and BVKJ4. Shall I just pick any one that I fancy?
Once I've flashed the appropriate ROM, do I then update the modem manually myself via ODIN? If so, what modem do I select? Or could I install the new ROM, hook it up to Kies and it will do the rest for me?
Many thanks
Simon

Start with the latest rom flash via Odin try Kies for update though rom you have may be newer than kies version .
Test phone then a modem can be flashed via Odin as Phone start again with last one and work back .

Sorry mate, I don't really understand what you just said there. I am being a bit dense, I know that, but I'm after a really clear guide as I'm mega scared to ruining my phone.
From what I gather I need to do this:
1. Download the firmware: PDA:BVKJ4|PHONE:BVKJ4|CSC:ORAKJ4, BVKJ4 Stock Kernel and the correct modem (BVKJ4)
2. Download ODIN
3. Flash the firmware through ODIN using the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
4. Flash the BVKJ4 stock kernel
5. Flash the appropriate modem.
Does that round about right?
Click to collapse
Actually, I've just read somewhere that flashing the firmware does the kernel and modem all in one. Is that right?
EDIT- Okay, so I bit the bullet and flashed the BVKJ4 firmware. I'm now stuck in a boot loop.
So, I found this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20656074#post20656074 which told me to flash the KI3 firmware as this will do a full wipe and THEN install BVKJ4. I'm going to give this a try now and will report back...
EDIT 2 - Okay, so the KI3 flash worked I'm now reflashing the BVKJ4 firmware in the hope that it works and I can get that blasted Signal Boost app...
Update on what's happened since my last post. I have successfully updated to what I think is the latest firmware version on Orange (UK).
Kies now says that my phone cannot be updated. Can someone let me know what I should flash in order to allow Kies to manage this for me? Noe I've gone back to stock, it's just easier to allow Kies to sort it out for me, instead of me keeping up to date with the million threads on the internet with the latest ROMs.
Thanks.

KIES cannot update unless the provider has given an update to the KIES server . If you have flashed Orange firmware its they who supply KIES .Ask Orange for last update .
If you have flashed various roms you may find your product codes no longer match any firmware .You need a total removal of KIES and all KIES registry settings from your PC .

Well, prior to rooting my phone in the first place, Kies was fine with updating my firmware. I got it from Phones4U on release day, so it's not carrier branded. I believe (although I'm not 100% sure) that I wouldn't have had the Orange firmware but rather the generic Samsung firmware.
The only reason I'm flashing the Orange firmware is for Signal Boost. But as I said previously, I don't want to keep checking the internet for new software versions. When ICS is ready for example, I just want Kies to manage the update for me. Could you please let me know whether completely uninstalling Kies (and registry entries) will fix my issue? It's a lot of effort if it won't and I need to install a different firmware version instead.
Thanks.
It might is the answer .
You have gone down the non standard firmware path by rooting and installing custom roms thereby changing codes .
If the codes on your phone match a KIES update then it updates its as simple as that .
Basic problem is not saving a copy of original firmware and all its codes that might have helped .Find your original firmware flash it and see if KIES will update .

Unlocked Ace, want Generic firmware

I have an Unlocked Samsung Ace, which was locked to Optus Australia earlier.
pda s5830xwks9
phone s5830xwks2
csc s5830oppks5
network lock off
network subset lock off
sp lock off
cp lock off
I just don't Optus app everywhere and running in background. Can I use a Generic Firmware ?
If yes can someone guide me or just provide links ?
I even tried to Root it with <upd_1 & AceGingerRoot>, and I can see Superuser icon, but Titanium Back up and BusyBox says my phone is not rooted.
get stock roms from sampro.pl or sammobile and flash it using odin
GUIDE
My ace is optus lock too and cant get root access
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda premium
Which ROM? Do I have to look for a specific ROM for my phone( according to PDA or CSC of my phone) or any one that is Gingerbread 2.3.4 or 2.3.5
get ddkq6 that is unbranded firmware and stable one [2.3.4]
Dear WiseMan Amit,
I am sorry to ask again, did u see read these stats *(pda s5830xwks9_phone s5830xwks2_csc s5830oppks5) of my phone before suggesting? I dont want a brick.
And after flashing that Rom, Will my phone update with Kies itself?
BTW what does this PDA PHONE and CSC mean? Shouldn't I choose a Rom according to them?
I am sorry again for bothering you. But .

i saw your version
flashing will not brick phone if you flash 5830 roms with proper instruction which you can get in some sticky
offcourse your phone will be updated through kies but you will have to wait for update for that specific region [in this case india if ddkq6]
all GB roms on sammobile are flashable for you...
PDA CSC stuffs give you info about region , specific identifier for update etc stuff
i was also very much concerned when first flash phone with odin... read instuctions carefully and flash device specific roms only
you might not be able to get updates through kies as samsung delays updates between regions.. so most of guys flash through odin itself
Thanx really a lot mate.
but I could only find DDKQ5. not 6
And as I am not able to root my phone, how do I back up my current Rom?
I couldnt resist and flashed S5830XWKS9_S5830XWKS2_S5830VGFKS1_HOME.tar.md5
Everything working but I have got Virgin Mobile shortcuts and Jeux game. Cant uninstall it.

It's available if you SEARCH in this forum
Herpderp Adreno + Tegra.
I was tempted to flash Russian 2.3.6 and I did it successfully. Cleared cache and factory reset and now even Kies accepts it and will update when available.
It is far better. I have lots of Ram available now.

[Q] Best stock GB ROM?

Hi,
This might be a stupid question but which is the most stable GB stock ROM available out there as per your opinion? and what is the harm in installing a ROM with different CSC as to yours current?
Does doing a factory reset after installing a ROM, removes all the settings from your old ROM ? as in is it like a format on a PC?
Thanks in advance.

This is TOTALLY subjective, as you yourself stated with "as per your opinion", and usually starts a bunch of arguments. Which is why these threads tend to get closed. I expect this one to get closed shortly.

You probably won't get updates via Kies anymore, if you were ever able to in the first place.

A "factory reset" essentially restores the last ROM you flashed to how it was the moment you flashed it.
EDIT to add: to the above factory reset question... it does remove all user installed apps and data too though. So it is KIND OF like a PC format, but not exactly.

Hi thanks for the reply. No i don't want to start a long thread of debates what i meant was, is the latest GB 2.3.6 better and more stable than the 2.3.5? The reason i asked about the CSC was coz 2.3.6 is not available for my region so was wondering if it is more stable than 2.3.5 i would upgrade it!
I updated my system to 2.3.5 via kies and all the software & everything else was how it was before I upgraded to it, does kies reinstall the stuff?

I'm still on XXKI3, which is 2.3.5. It's perfectly stable for me. CSC only matters if you want releases through Kies. If you want to continue to receive Kies updates, then don't change anything. Otherwise, you can flash whatever CSC you want.

No. Kies updates are non-wipe, which means it won't touch the data partition, where your apps live.

one last question, when flashing a GB stock ROM which is not available in my country via KIES do i need to put the following in ODIN:
The .tar with modem in the name is the phone/baseband bit of the package
.tar with csc/multi-csc in the name is the csc bit of the package
.tar with code/PDA in the name is the PDA part of the firmware package
for that particular ROM? or is there something i shouldn't mess with?

no need to worry, any FW package you download should contain these 3 files, to select from respective sections of the ODIN
or all these in a single TAR file to select from PDA.

You've for sure got an I9100, right?
USUALLY, full firmwares are all inclusive. So they will contain modem and CSC already. So you just put it into the PDA field in Odin and leave everything else alone.
You only put modem and CSC in if the package you put in PDA doesn't have them already, or you want to overwrite the ones that are already in a package.
Make sure you don't re-partition, or include a .PIT file unless you REALLY need to, the .PIT file is FOR SURE INTENDED FOR YOUR MODEL OF PHONE, and you know what you are doing. Flashing a .PIT file for a different model of phone will completely hard-brick your phone, and there won't be anything you can do to recover it yourself unless you get your own JTag box. Otherwise, it will have to go to Samsung or a service point that has JTag.

Installed firmware XWLA4 it is working like a charm and it is much much better than any before. Before i had 2.3.3 and wen i upgraded to 2.3.5 from KIES i was disappointed by the lack of stability in 2.3.5, Now when i upgraded 2.3.6 it is far far better than any other stock GB available.

If your problems are related to some apps misbehavior you could just try to delete data related to those apps, before you consider changing firmware. I was running LPQ and had some initial problem related to Swype (sky high CPU) and another app I just uninstalled. After that just running nice and well.
If this don't help you might want to re-flash old firmware or better flash a never ICS and do a wipe. In order to do so ... read ... some of the threads written about basic things like rooting and flashing

Here is one way to obtain what you want:
- First get root (search XDA to find out how)
- Second buy Odin Mobile from Google Play Google Play Odin Mobile
- Next register and download Samsung official firmware from http://www.sammobile.com.
- Unzip and copy file with extension MD5 to your mobiles internal SDcard.
- Use Odin Mobile to flash keeping default settings (if you don't want to keep root, un-check EverRoot option).
If you use this method (and stay rooted) you can keep flashing new Samsung stock firmwares from within your mobile when ever you want. Read this thread about Odin Mobile
Personally I'ill never use KIES anymore...

Please have a look at Intratech's Official Firmware thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Here you will find all what you need !
Since I found this thread, I no longer use Kies any more.
Flashing with Odin or Mobile Odin app from Chainfire.
And Intratech's ROM versions are non-wipe ... and you can combine them with any modem and/or CSC file you want/need.
