[Q] Rooting Neo .62 for newbie - Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, Pro

I still don't know about any rooting process and there was a lot of instructions I can't understand. Almost all of them are in shortcuts. I tried searching but almost all of it was too much complex for me. Computer illiterate here. >_<
I tried rooting my phone when it was still .42 using the one with zergrush. And now I updated my phone via PCC the root was gone. And I can't seem to root again via same method.
I downloaded things I saw here like the flash tool, fast boot, cwm and I don't gave a single clue how to use them right and there was this OTA or OTE updating to .62 which I don't understand what it is. I'm afraid I may do something bad to my phone.
Is there a way to root my phone again without unlocking the bootloader? Seems like on some of what I understand you have to unlock it, to use fastboot, flashtool or CWM. But I'm afraid to do it. Can you help me with the clearest instruction on how can I root my phone again? Thanks. And sorry for being ignorant with this things >_<

hello
you could flash .42 with wotanserver and root it, after that, update phone on phone! not pc companion, root will not stay. if you have unlocked bootloader, try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1134335
root should stay, if you ota

Why creating new thread? I see you already know much, so that means you read some threads, so why starting new one in stead of replying in existing one?
OTA update is Over The Air update, meaning you need to use update center option in your setttings->about phone, not using pc companion or seus.

No, you don't need to unlock it. That is only if you wanna use kernel which have root inside itself.

I'm really sorry. It's just that yes I read much but the infos was not that clear to me. Almost all instructions was in shortcut and I'm afraid to bump some topics from ages ago. I tried searching and found things but still didn't help me. -__-
some shortcuts like how do you do fasboot mode? or flashmode? can I install CWM without unlocking bootloader, how you use the CWM if you succesfully installed it and things? And how you use the flashtool. I'm sorry, still pretty much learning it. sorry for bad english
edit:
anyway thanks for the link I'm going to try it and sorry for making another topic. >_< because I'm so confused. Anyway if you can flash .42 you can flash .62 too right?

1) better to bump older thread(even though I'm sure it was already bumped ) than to create new thread, because that way you spread information on more places, instead of one place
2)fastboot mode: phone turned off, while holding menu, key connect cable, blue LED should turn on.
3)flashmode: phone turned off, while holding back key, connect cable, green LED should go on.
4)CWM can be installed even on locked bootloader, but you need to have root to install CWM
5)how to enter CWM? that depends on CWM, on some you need to press repeatedly back key while booting, some pressing volume-, on some you need to tap on screen.
6)you can flash any fw, whether you use flashtool(link to tutorial) and flash .ftf file, or using wotan-server(easier for new guys)

thanks a lot! now everything is clear to me. So I can flash .62 instead of doing the OTA right?
sorry I didn't know that it's better to bump old threads here for in other forums they got all that angry when someone bumped an old thread. Thanks again!

No!
Not if you wanna have root, and keep your bootloader locked.
As you already noticed(by your experience) you can't root .62. So flash .42, root, and do OTA update.

well, that depends on forum this one is really big, and it's hard to find information if there are million threads about same thing.
on some other, smaller forums, they let new peoples to create new thread for their problems.
but still, even if you bumped some threads here, it wouldn't be a big bump, since threads aren't so old here.

Oh god! Good thing I visited this again before downloading the .62 tft file! Thanks again!
And thanks, now I know, I'll just bump other threads if I have questions again.

[Q] [HELP] What am I getting wrong here - can't seem to flash my Neo

Shameless crosspost from the tutorial-thread for installing Cyanogenmod on the Neo over at the Cyanogenmod forums.
Hi! I'm quite new to rooting and flashing my device (started reading and doing it yesterday), but I really want to make it work now, but I can't seem to get it working.
I have no problems rooting my phone or installing ClockWorkMod, but I can't seem to get it to run neither a custom kernel nor a custom ROM.
I have a SE Xperia Neo, and have both followed the mentioned tutorial, and tried other methods (some pulled straight out of my ass) to flash my device, but no matter what I do, ecxept flashing to a stock ROM of Android (I think that's what it is called?), it always freeze on the Sony Ericsson logo, right after the FreeXperia logo, and I have to do a hard shutdown (pop out the battery and replace it again) to get it to do something else. However, when frozen, both Flashtool and SuperOneClick is able to root the system at this point, so it isn't frozen, but it never goes on doing something, either. I guess it's just trying to boot a (incompatible) ROM.
My bootloader is unlocked (I just checked).
I've tried following the mentioned tutorial with both a phone flashed with 4.0.2.A.0.42 and 4.0.1.A.0.283 (read somewhere those were the best supported or best to use for this?). I've tried flashing the boot.img from the Cyanogen-zipfile to the phone (went well) on both; I've tried repeatedly pressing the volume down key both on boot and on the FreeXperia screen; I've tried to flash boot.img to the phone, rooting i, using both SuperOneClick and Flashtool then installing the ClockWorkMod (as I couldn't get to the recovery screen). And, I've followed the tutorial between two and three times with both 4.0.2.A.0.42 and 4.0.1.A.0.283. I have no idea what to try next.
Does anybody here have a clue for me? Should I try flashing with another Android version running on my phone (if so: which)?

First I tried to unlock it again with fastboot, which said it was unlocked. But I also opened the dialer and pressed *#*#7378423#*#*, Service info -> Configuration, and at the bottom it said "Bootloader unlocked: Yes.". Is one of the methods prefered over the over?

Anw, since you see free xperia logo that means you flashed kernel(or at least boot with that kernel) with success.
Q1: You say you pressed volume-, have you tried with pressing back repeatedly? or by taping on screen? or repeatedly pressing power button?
Q2: show me instruction which you used to flash kernel?
Q3: you said you installed CWM trough flashtool, does that mean you manage to enter CWM eventually or not?
Q4: show the link of what you are trying to install.

I did not install CWM through Flashtool. However, when not following the tutorial I mentioned, I installed CWM Recovery using a modded installer. IIRC it was modded by DoomLord, but I can't find the link for it. When using a stock ROM, I boot into CWM Recovery with ease by repeatedly pressing the volume down key.

And, by the way, Madfysh, thank you for caring enough to taking your time to try and bend your mind to understand my problems. If I knew your reddit username, I'd stalk you and upvote everything.
Only things I can think of is:
1) make 100% sure you are writing fastboot flash boot boot.img and not fastboot boot boot.img
Sometimes people write wrongly without noticing, and after few posts they realize they wrote wrong instructions.
2) try repeatedly pressing other keys, each time your phone starts with that kernel, try pressing one key.
3) try FREEXPERIA RELEASE INSTALLATION from same link.
I will try everything you've suggested, Madfysh, and report back after trying.

As the download link was not working/outdated, I tried another kernel/ROM-combo, that worked. Now I'll try and see if I can find a ROM that I really like and use that instead of Cyanogenmod, as it looks like it don't play well with my phone at this point. Thank you for taking your time to try to help me, Madfysh. You're the best!

flashing is really simple and it took me just 15 minutes a few hours ago to flash .58 fw.
so here it goes.
first, you need to download .58 fw here http://depositfiles.com/files/1inil87p7
then download flashtool here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351309
after you downloaded both of that, install the flashtool to your computer. then put the .58 fw that you just downloaded to c:/program files/flashtool/firmwares
means that i recommend to save flashtool on c:/program files.
after you have done that. backup all needed things such as maybe your messages, contacts or maybe apk files using super backup for both messages and contacts and titanium for backing up apk.
after you done that, open flashtool, connect your devices to the computer using usb cable, then flashtool will automatically recognises your phone it will say 'connected devices: SK17'.
then click on the flash thunder icon and choose flashmod, then you will see the .58 fw that you just downloaded earlier. then i recommend you to leave wipe data and cache checked or maybe up to you. because last time i unchecked wipe data and cache i cant root my phone after so thats why i ask u to backup things. and press ok. wait like 1 minute then it will ask you to unplug usb cable, switch off your phone. while your phone switched off, hold down the volume button, plug in devices using usb cable to your computer and power on your device, then you will see flashtool will start flashing.
after flashing is done, unplug the usb cable and switch on your phone then BOOM! you are now on .58 fw. then just simply root it using doomlord zergrush method and thats it.
if you a little bit confuse just follow these steps
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928343
You can use flashtool: http://androxyde.github.com/ (PM me if you can't download).
I would suggest you to jump on FreeXperia mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1226715 as it is way better than stock, and it makes your phone rooted. Hovewer, you need unlock your bootloader.

oh, benefits of unlocking bootloader is that you can use custom roms and custom kernels, you can even flash custom kernel that can root .62 im not sure check it out somewhere on android development section.
and afaik, if you unlock bootloader you will not get any official updates from se such as in the future the ice cream sandwich updates but im not completely sure

You can always relock your bootloader and update but you can't get back DRM rights...which is not a big issue...so what if track id don't work, there are better similar apps like soundhound. Also there is a method which unlocks bootloader without losing DRM but never test it

1. Unlocking bootloader will stop you from updating through SE official method. But i'm sure you can always flash the firmware using flashtool when the update is available
2. Unlocking bootloader DOES NOT do any harm as far as i'm concern(but void the warranty! If i'm not mistaken). The only way you can damage it is by using third party software/firmware.. Let say you unlock the bootloader > use custom kernel > overclock it like crazy till it melts.

Yes. Hold down the volume down button keys for mini pro.
You need to do this after you selected your chosen firmware to flash and click ok.
Then you will see a pop up telling you to unplug the USB cable, switch off phone.
Then hold down the volume down, while doing that, plug in your USB cable to your computer and switch on your phone. Don't let go of holding the volume down button yet!
Wait till you see on the flashtool start flashing then it's ok to release the volume down button and that's where the magic started.
No you don't need to unmount your sd card, it will not remove/ delete anything from your sd card except applications or games that are saved on your sd card which is not a big deal you can download it again later or make a backup of its apk.
Hope I help ya

help! my mini pro stucked on sony ericsson logo

hey guys, this is my first time i would say i bricked my phone. i need someone to help me my phone has been in 'coma' for nearly 2 days now.
so this happened when i try to apply this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306044 and after i carelessly copied framework-res.apk to system/framework using root explorer without setting the correct permissions, my phone automatically shuts off and try to restart but it failed, it stucked on the big sony ericsson logo and 'sony ericsson' text.
i have pull out the battery hundred times and try to reboot my phone normally but it didnt worked it still stucked on the sony ericsson logo.
so can anyone help me please...
what tools/application should i get to fix this?
first of all, i dont want to wipe/lose/factory reset my phone memory data because that would make my phone contacts gone which i never ever want to happen. so please is it possible to backup my contacts somewhere else if wiping is the answer at least??
okay i took a lot of time to type this and hoping someone give me an answer

Congratulations, you have felt the power of customizing Android for the first
Actually, one way to fix this now, is to get back to fully stock firmware.
The second way would be to unlock bootloader, install a custom kernel, enter recovery and use Fix Permissions option. Unfortunately, not all Recoveries have this, only some versions of ClockworkMod Recovery. I have used many kernels on my LWW and only some of these included this option and I can't remember which one had, which not.

If contacts is too important for you and you have no backups, then go for the 2nd way - Unlock bootloader and install a custom kernel, which offers the Fix Permissions option.
I will check the Update Service, if Repair option will erase user data or not, currently updating my phone.
EDIT: Yes, removes all data.

If you can access flashmode, then your okay. Just flash stock firmware.
Will check Flashtool option.
Yep, you're correct, Flashtool has option to not wipe user data.

this will do? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928343
or maybe i should try what this guy says?
"Follow this guide External rooting guide but in steps 5 and 12 instead of "rootxperia.zip" use "mini_mod_v1.8.zip". Once you have phone fully booted I suggest to install CWM recovery mode (you probably don't have it now) - CWM installation file - run install-cwm1.cmd and follow the onscreen instructions. Then you will be able to enter CWM recovery via volume down button during booting."

plz help me thanks in advance gents
Actually, i think you could've salvaged your phone without the need of flashing it... If you had access to CWM, you could've put framework file into zip file and flash it with CWM. It helped me once when i got stuck in bootloop after failed installation of a mod

its very easy to recover your phone if you got bootloop or stuck at sony ericsson logo. dont sweat.
first of all you need a stock .ftf firmware downloaded. any .ftf stock firmware .58/62/42 or whatever as long as it is stock.
then download and install flashtool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351309
then put your downloaded .ftf firmware at c:/program files/flashtool/firmwares/"your downloaded .ftf firmware"
then open flashtool and click on the lightning icon. and choose flashmode.
then press volume down button, while you do that connect your phone to pc using usb then flash the firmwares. then boom your phone back to life

[Q] Rooting xperia mini with 4.0.2.a.62

This damn device vibrating all the time and it's impossible to use it, even can't call someone, that drives me crazy anymore, and all I can do seems like using a script revealed on the web. However to be able to run that script, if I'm not mistaken, I have to root the device.
Well, rooting a.62 entails unlocking the boot loader. Don't know why I couldn't manage it. So, tried to downgrade to A.42 with WotanClient. However, again, it didn't work. Just connecting the device while holding the volume down button, but the application can't recognize the device.
Now, what can I do to make those script stuff work, if rooting is the only way to go, then how can I root A.62 version ?
Check THIS thread and thank the author if it helps

Turn the phone off, hold down Volume DOWN button, connect the USB cable. Green LED has to turn on, nothing will be on the screen. Then is phone in flashmode. If app cannot find the device, install proper drivers.
Well, I downloaded booth flashtool and firmware. Followed the steps in the given instructions however when I connect the device by pushing and holding volume down button, it identifies the device but does nothing, then device gets disconnected by itself. What am I supposed to do.

Well I'm not very knowledgeable about it but if you root it on 0.58 you have to stick to it, even the reason downgrading is to be able to root it, since recent versions can not be rooted, right.

The problem your hpone has is a common problem. (look up on google). It is caused by a know issue on the Xperia Mini. The overheating. I experienced the same issue too. The capacitive buttons are actually heat sensetive and respont to the warmth of the body when touched. In case of mini, due to faulty hardware, the touchscreen getss excessively hot, and the back button asusumes "touch" all the time.
Many thought it was over sensitiveness of the back button rather than over heat of the device. But it turns out, the Sony themselves recognised the issue, and promised a replacement. I did it myself from the local Service Centre, I will recommended you to go the same.
About flashing using flashtool, first select the ROM in flashtool, and then connect the device by pressing the back button when asked.
Thanks,
Rick

Once flashed the 058 firmware and rooted it, you can upgrade via OTA (not PC Companion) to .62 without losing root.
Remember that having an unlocked bootloader would brick the phone. Use OTA only with locked bootloader.

Thanks for your post, but I'm aware of the reason of that problem and as you said I followed all the steps, including connecting while depressing the volume down button, but nothing happens, flashing process does not start.
Try to download the latest version of flashtool.
Somehow I managed to downgrade to .42
And then rooted it with a dos interfaced application. Looks like it has been rooted but how can I tell if it is or not ?
When it comes main reason of all those burdensome endeavor, I'm tried to run the script for heating problem. Installed the Gscript. Created a new script and click to run, however a blue screen comes up and nothing happens. Vibration problem still reigns.
To know if you have root, just check if SuperUser app is installed. Now when you run GScript, SuperUser shuold ask you if you want to allow root access for the application. If not, there's a problem :/
:/ there is no such application on the menu.
But the doomlord_v4_root application has worked well and it said "all done" at the end and restarted the phone.
Oh well... I don't know -__-
I mean, I'm not such an expert user, maybe someone else knows if this is a common issue or not. Sorry, you'll have to wait for someone else's help
EDIT
Did you use THIS tool?

I moved system app out of /sys and phone wont start now :(

Hi, sorry to xda for posting in bad sections in the past but i am dumb hence my problem please please please help
I have mb860 i think i have emara as firmware? when i browse through my backup files from titanium backup in text mode i see android 2.3.4 then emara and its version...
I cant fully check this all because my phone is not working and only boots into android recovery. I have stock, my bootloader is not unlocked. I tried flashing over cwm into the recovery partition and got an error basocally saying my bl was locked, so i tried some fixes with fastboot but both methods gave me "(bootloader)OEM unlock not implementable"
So i dont know how to unlock bl, which means i dont know how to open a adb shell and move around my phone...
Also i got rsd lite (i never used this when i programed for android) because i wanted to push an entire sbf.. Only problem is every sbf link is broken for my version that i find and even xda links to a filefsctory depository wich is littered with actual viruses...
My head really hurts so if anyone can help im so sorry if im not clear i will try hard to explain just ask.... I havnt slept since it happened about 40 or 50 hours ago?
Oh yeah what happened?
I moved an app called "system tuner" out of /sys and instantly got notifications telling me applications were force closing... They were back to back and i could not long hold home and just move system tuner back and ignore them, i tried and almost made it to move system tuner back but then all i saw was a vertical display of my battery being charged....... Now i can boot into android recovery mode and nvflash fastboot rsd and about 7 more...
I thought i had luck with usb enumeration and that would make it go as usb mass storage and i could do something. And my usb driver read it as a usb storage device but it didnt work.
I have a backup of user and syte, data by backup titanium on my pc thats how i saw i had 2.3.4... The update.zip backup is on my phone... Speaking of that can i somehow fix my problem by putting a .zip file on my phone? To repopulate it? I think its all gone????
EDIT: MY BLOOTLOADER IS LOCKED... IM 99%
And idk if it means anything when i plug into rsd mode, my ui on my pc tells me im connected to "se flash olympus" which is all good but it doesnt have an (imei/esn/meid) number.?????

So basically what you're saying is you have a stock device, locked bootloader, and you failed to read the directions about unlocking (pudding sbf, oem unlock, custom recovery). How do you expect to flash custom roms or custom recoveries with a locked bootloader?
