Somebody can maybe help me with the following:
this thread gives some nice mod to the camera of my phone (sensation XE with ICS).
So to get this modification to work, i have to flash it. But i have no clue what to do to actually flash a mod in android.
searching the forums doesn't help. To look for general info on how to flash a mod is not helping me find anything.
somebody can tell me how to find help or explain what to do with the zip file in that thread?

Just place the file on your sd card, boot into recovery, then choose "install zip from sd", choose it and it will be flashed.
thanks, sounds easy. But now i have to get into all this related stuff. So when i did some searching on what recovery mode is, it apparently has to do with a rom manager. To install that i need rooting/root access. So first step to a nice working camera on my sensation is making it rooted. (I feel such a noob, WM 6 was sooo easy, back then in the good old days)
too be continued... and say goodbye to that warranty
edit: Sooo... this rooting is not so easily done. Now i need to find the time and guts to do all this.
the HD2 i lost last year was so much easier.

Make sure you follow the instructions in your device's forum. DO NOT use rom manager to flash recovery unless the guide says so.
your correct. I need S-off first, and then root access. But yesterday i installed the HTC update for ICS. So now i have a version on the sensation that is not recognized/supported by the industriality tool. S-off is not in it for me for now. Shame.

I dont see any guides anywhere at all on this site that tell you what to do with clockwork recovery, what to do with radios, what to do with downloaded rom files, how you install any of it or anything at all. It's just "here's rom, enjoy!"
Search YouTube....that's how I learned

They are all over in the dev section. It hasn't been covered a lot here because most of us came from another HTC, so its all the same game. But, if you can't find something you need to know, feel free to pm me. I'll be glad to help anyone.

If you just want to learn how to flash a ROM zip from recovery or radio from hboot, the CM wiki should help you a little...the procedure is the same for any distributed custom rom really (with a few exceptions). As loonatik said, it's a pretty simple process and I would imagine most users are aware of how to do it by now (or have done as sporty said and just searched for helpful videos). But yea, they don't include installation instructions for each rom because it's pretty much an identical procedure.
Ok so heres the deal I finally found out how to flash a custom rom to my Xperia Mini. The forum was of much help but still I had to do extensive research on how to flash the damn rom.
So basically what you usually need to flash a custom rom is
Phone
Unlocked Bootloader - Link To instructions Below. OFFICIAL Method by Sony
Custom Kernel
ClockworkMod/ CWM - Note that some custom kernels like bboof's come with CWM.
Custom Rom - there are many roms out there. Im currently using hybrom v16 by bboof.. another popular rom would be cynogenmod.
Beware that some custom roms require you to RE FLASH your stock FIRMWARE before you install or do anything at all.. Just DOWNLOAD WOTAN CLIENT and reflash your STOCK SE FIRMWARE. And remember to get the CORRECT FIRMWARE VERSION
Firstly you need to check whether your phone's bootloader is able to be unlocked or not go to dialpad and type *#*#7378423#*#* go to service menu and see whether it says BOOTLOADER UNLOCK > ALLOWED. If yes then you can unlock your bootloader.. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE UNLOCKING YOUR BOOTLOADER. Might void warranty. I cant explain much about the bootloader but if you wan you can google it.
Next is getting your bootloader unlocked.
Google for the officially unlock by sony or you can go around the forum android development and you are bound to find a way to unlock it.
Then you have to install custom kernel - this depends on what rom you are using and they usually will recommend a kernel to use..
After finding out what kernel to use. You you usually have to flash it with a program called fastboot. YOU WOULD KNOW WHAT IS FASTBOOT IF YOU FOLLOWED THE OFFICIAL METHOD FOR UNLOCKING BOOTLOADER by Sony. Then you can follow cynogen's method. LINK BELOW
Check whether the kernel has CWM. if not you might have to find it yourself or try using the autoCWMinstaller it can be found in the MARKET.
autoCWMinstaller might not work for all roms.
IMO CWM is basically like a bios which helps you installing the OS just like how the bios in your computer lets you choose where to load the OS from when you just reformatted your hard disc and want to install a new one. So no cwm means you cant install rom. CWM will differ from phone to phone.
Then you get your rom. After downloading the rom you place it in your SD Card and boot your phone into recorvery.
Usually the people who make the roms will give you instructions.
Usually you have to factory reset, wipe data and dalvik cache.. After thats done just install from .zip file find your rom you downloaded in ur sd card and install. DO NOT UNPACK your rom in ur pc. MAKE SURE IT IS STILL in ZIP format.
After that usually thats it. Well I made this post because Im so frustrated that I cant really find a proper guide to installing custom roms. Feel free to ask me if any questions.
Official Sony Method
How to install kernel cynogen's method
Great post. I had to research a lot to learn how to flash custom ROMs, like you.
The forum is great, but I think it lacks a proper tutorial for noobs.
I know that tutorials won't teach people what they are really doing, but it gives something for them to begin with. Curious people tend to research and learn things, specially when it's something interesting for them (like custom ROMs for us).
IMO, if you give a proper and step-by-step tutorial that comprehends basic operations (like firstly unlock bootloader to be able to use custom kernels that include CWM, which are necessary for custom ROMs and how to properly install each of them), the user already has the most important informations in his head. With that, he'll be able to do simple things and learn the rest by himself.
BTW, great post and great tutorial.

Just a quick question why are there two dev sections for this device? what is the difference? is one for the older gb and froyo roms and the new for ICS and soon to be jellybean? I am looking into how to root this for a friend. I have a samsung gs2 with an unlocked bootloader I have never rooted a phone with a locked bootloader. So how do you guys go about this? For my phone I have a pc program called odin that does low level flashing so all I do is use it to install cloclworkmod or twrp and then flash su and install the.apk and busybox. Is there sometihng similar for this phone or does everything have to be done by ADB? If someone explains which dev section I should go to I will figure it out myself but the more info yoy guys can give me the better. I do still have to find out what software my friend has. I also want her to do this by herself so I want to be able to explain it to her. Thanks in advance.
Use this. It's doesn't it all for you.

The Android Development and Original Android Development forums are organized pretty much as they sound: Original Development will have threads for programs, mods, roms, kernels, etc. that are the original work of the developer. Android Development has threads for those that are built off of someone else's existing work (e.g. A rom that is a collection of tweaks pulled from other roms). I agree with the previous poster on using regawMOD, it is the simplest way to unlock the bootloader, flash a recovery and gain root access all at once. That being said, if your friend is on 1.22.651.3, there is an additional step to manually move the root package to the sd card. Read page 80-84 on the dev's thread for more info.

Hi,
i searched everywhere couldn't find anything about the AT&T verison of HTC One X+ and CM10
Is there a way to root the ATT version and install CM10 on it???
Read only about the international version yet. Don't want to brick my new phone.
Thanks.
Nope, there's still a bit of a wait on CM10/ASOP for AT&T/TELUS users. When a usable version is ready, it'll probably be here with [AT&T/TELUS] in the title.
damm was so hoping to change my devices from s3 to htc thanks mate.
Currently using the cm10.1 for s3 expermintal. i think when nightly last night.

So, the experimital CM10.1 is running on your HTC One X+. I have the same phone and I have unlocked it from HTC's web site. I'm a noob and don't know a lot about this stuff. Still learning. Should I try any mod or wait? I really want to get the AT&T crud off of my phone. Like I said, my phone is unlocked now.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
There are several non experimental roms you can install already just to get rid of the at&t stuff. Also you could root it and use titanium backup or root uninstaller or something to just get rid of unneeded stuff. If it were me, I would not DARE try anything experimental with my new phone, especially something cm10 related because pretty much all the devs have said there is nothing ready yet on that avenue.

OK, I'm new here and I really thank you all for any advise. I will read on and try to find some of these existing ROM's. This is probably a REALLY big noob question. If my phone is unlocked, does that mean it is rooted?
BTW, I also thank you for the advise on not using any experimental roms. I won't touch unless I know for sure. This new phone is a gem and I don't want to screw it up.

Unlock is unlock and root is root
Indeed. You have unlocked the bootloader which is step 1. Now you need to root which is step 2. There is an all in one tool in the android development forum you can use to root. That might be the easiest way to go. Once you are rooted you can get root uninstaller for free from the play store or titanium backup. Titanium is probably better choice there. You could also flash a rom through recovery that is already rooted but most of those require you flash the kernel seperatly so if you are.very new i probably wouldnt do that just yet. Read up on the process first. Hope that helps.

Thanks! My problem is this..... I used the HTC step by step from http://onexroot.com/one-x-root/how-to-root-one-x/
I got through the step where the instructions say to Mark - Right Click Copy - Paste into the HTCDev.com website
I then followed the instructions on through until the phone was unlocked.
At step 39 the instructions say to -
Reboot your phone into Fastboot mode and type the following in command prompt:and
type and execute at the cmd prompt -
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.2.7-endeavoru.img
OK, I finished these steps and am now stuck at step 40.
I then copied the CWN-SuperSU-v.0.87.zip file to the root of my phone storage
The phone won't boot in to recovery at all
What is the CWN-SuperSU-v.0.87.zip file for and do I need to complete the step by rebooting using it in recovery mode? It will not boot in to recovery anyway.
So my phone was wiped and unlocked but back to the original AT&T build and I don't understand where I pick up in the process.
This is the point where I get confused. I research and read everywhere too. I know my phone is unlocked for sure. It's not bricked yet. :fingers-crossed:
I don't know where I pick back up with the process using some of the recommendations you guys have given me.

Ok, well i am relevantly new to this rooting method for the android devices; so after reading through threads on rooting i have read sections on unlocking bootloader, roms, kernels and stuff and my question is. Will i be able to root my phone without unlocking it just so i can access applications that need root to run? i have no plans in adding or using custom roms on my phone and was wondering will i still be able to update my phone though the official updates? cause i have read from some threads and posts that you will not be able to update it and was wondering is it mandatory for me to unlock the bootloader while rooting....... thanks in advance for the answer and help
No. Root can be obtained only after unlockong.
Sent from my HTC One X+ using xda premium
hmm ok so i will need to bootload before rooting ha..... fine so how do i do the updates through roms.... if so where can i find them and are there any threads that shows how to use them.
I would recommend you not worry about how to flash ROMs quite yet. Once you obtain root, which isn't really hard, flashing ROMs will seem easy as pie. And to flash ROMs you need to flash a kernel, which is easily done with the rooting tool posted in the development section. Good luck.

At which step are you stuck? I will be glad to help you, you should have posted right in the thread.
I haven't gone through the mentioned guide above, and it might be all good, but I've followed this one instead when I first got my HOX+ (now I can do it blindfolded) and it was easy to follow and worked like a charm. Give it a shot.
Just an FYI (so you don't call us liars in the future when you switch devices), but not all root hacks require the bootloader to be unlocked, it depends on the device.
