Unlocked Evo 3d and ICS Update...when it arrives lol - HTC EVO 3D

Hi, i have unlocked my Evo 3D using HTCDEV.com. I was wondering if it will be ok and safe to do the ICS OTA update when it arrives? Also could someone please advise me on my next steps to root my Evo 3D so i can use custom roms etc. All i have managed to do is up to yet is unlock my handset using HTCDEV.com, but i am unsure what further steps i need to take to root my device as there are so many different view and topics on the subject and it all gets a little confusing as what to do next. My HBoot is 1.49.0018, and i really dont know what to do next, so could someone be so kind as to advice on what further steps are required.........Thank-you for any help offered.

You might already have done this but just to make sure.
Did you flash a recovery.img?

I wouldn't bother, there will undoubtedly be a pre-rooted, cwm flashable version available within a day of the update landing.

Don't know if it will update the hboot but I suggest you downgrade and s-off it, if there is any method available for gsm...
And to flash a ROM, you don't need to be rooted. Just flash a custom recovery.img like 4ext, twrp, cwm. Then flash any ROM that you like. Almost every ROM here comes with super user. So after flashing a custom ROM made by a Dev , you will be rooted. If you want to root your stock ROM and don't want to flash custom roms for now, just flash a custom recovery first, then go to recovery flash this zip if you want SuperSU by Chainfire----------> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
OR
this one if you want Superuser by ChainsDD---->
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312971
The second one might not work...

@iTzLOLtrain......I haven't flashed a recovery.img as of yet because i am unsure of the software to use buddy. If you could advise on which software you think is the best then i am more than keen to have a shot. This is my first time ever with android and i am really scared of 'bricking' my handset. I was under the impression if i wanted to install custom roms that i would have to root my device first?
@mnomaanw......Hi bud, i have tried the links you posted but i just get a 404 page not found error.........Cheers

Oops sorry....should work now.

Next step is to flash a custom recovery like 4ext which has no issues at all and then flash your su file this is how you obtain root access after this you flash a custom Rom

Ahhhh, I remember my first time. Do an awful lot of searching and reading. Once you feel like you can't get anymore info on a subject, then try it. You may have an issue, which most people on here will help u with when ask. If you came from that fruity company, you should be very happy with what Mr. Android and his developers can do.

Update rooted phone but no custom rom

So Sprint just came out with an update. I rooted my phone but have not flashed any custom rom yet.
Can I run the update or do I need to wait to flash a rom with the update?
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
you need to wait in case they patch the lazy panda exploit.
Once a dev has one that is prerooted they will post it up in the dev forum.
If you are using RootKeeper and have just root with stock ROM, can you apply the OTA update and then restore root with RootKeeper?
another noob question
I am getting confused on root vs. unlocked vs. s-off.
I used htc dev. to, I guess, unlock my phone (I thought this was rooting). I know I do NOT have s-off yet. I did read some post, a while ago, that talked unlocked and s-off (I think, I can't find that post anymore). I used the following to "Root" method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671577 . It looks like that only unlocks your phone.
I want to install twrp and can't figure out what method I am suppose to use to install it. Goo Manager vs. fastboot method? It says if you are unlocked AND rooted you can use Goo Manager. If you are only unlocked then fastboot.
Can someone please help me to understand?
Thanks.

At this point, HTC dev unlock has all the same capabilities as s-off, so even if this ota blocks the lazy panda exploit, just go the HTC dev route.

No it doesn't. You don't have full nand write, which means no custom radios and no custom bootloader (such as getting rid of red text)
Thank you everyone! I now have s-off, and have twrp installed. I am ready to have fun now!

EVO 3D CDMA ICS OTA and just UNLOCKED

Hello,
I installed the ICS OTA on my EVO 3D, i then went to htcdev and unlocked my phone. How do i gain root access from here? All this googling is giving me a headache lol. I keep finding so many different ways but it all seems a little confusing. Am i able to install a custom recovery then flash SU without flashing another rom? if so how? or do i have to lose everything and start over again? I miss good ol' unrevoked lol.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Decide which recovery you want, and flash it through bootloader.
I understand that, thank you. And im not trying to be lazy, ive gone through 10 different pages of posts so far and just about everyone of them references not flashing ICS rom. So i just wanted to make sure i wasn't ahead of myself for already having the official ICS. But i also don't want to flash any roms if i don't have to. I just want to gain root access. So thank you for the tip. I will start looking for recoveries.
hey don't feel bad, i had 1.4 s-off and went to stock so to get the bug free official ics and am extremely let down - to put it mildly.
i too am nervous over bricking all over again and i wonder if better options are out since may.
i also feel the forum is more fragmented and evo3d specific deving seems to have slowed.
i sure would welcome a clear path to best root from here and best bug free ics jb sensev4 rom
or am i dreaming

Hey man, I figured it out!
after taking the ota from sprint, I went and unlocked my phone with htcdev, then flashed twrp recovery from the official site for the recovery, the only method that worked for me was using the adb method, after that I flashed su, the newest su kept failing so I flashed the 2.3.something version then I was able to flash the new 3.x su. All is well and I know have a stock rooted Ics.

How can i root my htc evo 4g lte on 2.13?

Hey guys im looking to get help and a tutorial on how to root the 4g lte on 2.13? I've searched online but still haven't found an answer to my question. So if you are reading this let me know how to root it thanks.
Your only option is to use the htcdev.com method. You cannot get s-off though.

Unlocking your bootloader using HTCDev Unlock will allow you to flash a custom recovery. With a custom recovery, obtaining root is easy (plenty of flashable ZIPs for this). This has nothing to do with your version of HBOOT (or firmware or OTA version).
Read the guide I linked to above and it will answer these questions...

New EVO 4g LTE user

Hi guys I am a new and very happy EVO 4G LTE user. Got my phone almost 2 weeks ago. Its a very sexy device.
But I am wondering if I am using my phone to its full capabilities. I haven't rooted or install any rom , but I am familiar with installing roms. I did it to my Evo 4G. I am no expert I id go through a bit of trouble to get it right.
I want to know what are some MUST HAVE things for this phone. Ive read about google now and I would love to be able to use an app like that. I think I have to install a rom for that and i am willing to do it. I am a bit scared to do the rom and flash a rom because I dont want to mess it up. Its running so nice right now. But if anyone is willing to help me and guide me in the right direction so I install some cool stuff and most important something that is well made. I want to see if you guys recommend me some roms and maybe a guide on how to root it and install roms and do it all correctly.
Thanks in advance and if you can post some links to maybe youtube vids that would be greatly appreciated.
Rooting is pretty straight-forward. It just depends on what hboot u have. Zedomax's root method is preferred to htcdevunlock, but if u plan to s-off the difference is minimal. Sorry if this is confusing. Do u know your hboot version? To find out turn phone off, then when turning back on hold down power and volume down until screen pops up. Look for hboot version # and remember that.
As far as a good stock starter rom with google now and multitasking fix I'd go with flex 360's stock w/ goodies. It has the beauty of sense but with the better battery life and speed of a custom rom. Actually haven't found a rom I like more since I left the og EVO.
What is the difference between s-on and s-off? What are the pros and cons of each on.

The difference between son and soff is that soff gives direct write access to the partitions. Son does not allow you to flash the kernel unless in recovery or flash any firmware updates. There is a downgrade toolkit being worked on and it's looking good from all the talk going on in the thread.

if u and up rooting and flashing a rom try mean rom!! :good:
If you hadn't quoted I wouldn't have caught my typo lol
Speaking as a noob my self.. if you really want ot root your phone.. listen to the folks on this forum .. they are extremely knowlegable and have helped me out of a couple of jams .. and just read alot.. this forum.. and any thing you can get your hands on
Viper rom is the best customizable rom and battery life is getting up there (currently challenging viper and awillis!) Meanrom most stock rom ever and its mad fast (version 4.8) stock with goodies aka flex360 rom is focused on multitasking and before that it was smoothest stock rom and was a deep sleeper (havent tried the recent version). Cm10 by deck is best aosp version of jelly bean (4.1) still a nightlie build but its daily driver worthy. These were the roms ive flashed and ran the past week.. i kept switching, hard to stay on one cause all of them are amazing. I personally flash for fun and to try the stuff that the devs have given us. Choose whatever fits u and satisfy u. Dont forget these are the devs choice to give us, so take what we have! Im sure there are other roms that r good its just i havent ran them cause theres too much but kudos to any devs that take their time on building a rom for us.
Btw Plz dont bash on my opinions im just saying

No issues with WiFi or 4g at all. Every rom has some little things wrong with it, but no more than stock does.
U want to use the htcdev unlock method to root. It's really easy, just follow the directions. I don't have the link since I'm on xda app. Just search EVO LTE forum for root. It's possible that the regawmod root method will still work, but they both use the htcdev unlock.
Also, flashing roms is going to be different than og EVO. U need to flash kernel separate from rom using flashGUI or adb tools via fastboot. Unless u decide to go s-off, then u can flash rom like you're used to
I'm running cleanrom 1.5 and I love it! I rooted mine in July so I'm sure there is a whole new way to root it now. But soff is pretty awesome. There are some great kernals out there and they can do wonders for your speed and battery life.

Search zedomax root method for root. Then lazypanda for s-off. Just follow instructions to a T and u will be fine.
U lucky bc 1.12.
Another new user here. I'm rooted but everything else is still stock. I've got HBoot 1.12 so it sounds like S-OFF will be easy. After that do I need to update the firmware and/or radio or can I go straight to TWRP recovery and try out custom ROMs?

U can go straight to twrp now and flash roms all u want. Ur rooted and have hboot 1.12, so just install rom from twrp and ur good. If u had 1.15+ then u would have to flash the kernel seperate, but no need to worry about that.
If u want s-off u should probably just go straight from root to lazypanda since the closest thing to stock works the best. Just make sure u read everything u can and follow directions exactly and u will be fine.
As far as flashing radios u can do that, but go s-off first so u don't have issues here. S-off allows u access to all partitions on your phone. 1.12 is good on access as well but just not as much as being totally s-off.
Make sure u flash radios properly, never downgrade or u will brick most likely. Follow captain throwback's radio thread for further in depth tips.

New DNA with Questions

I hope I posted this in the rigth section, if I didnt I appologize. So, I used to have an HTC Thunderbolt and yesterday I upgraded to the DNA and I love it. But I do have a few questions. See I want to root it, but I dont want to have to hassle with all the custom ROM stuff again. Plus all I really see a need for me is to have root access. So I did do some looking and came across these links

Im still a little new to the rooting scene and just want to make sure I know what im doing before I do it. So here are my questions.
1) If I root will I still be able to install the OTA updates that come on my phone?
2) Are the two links above both rooting methods, just different ways of doing it?
3) If yes to 2, is there a current "best" way to root the DNA?
4) If I decide to un-root, is there a way to do that? (im sure there is and a guide even)
I think that is all the questions I have for now. Thank you very much and keep up the great work here.

Follow the first link you posted because in order to unlock the bootloader you need the super CID hack then after you do the super CID hack go to the htcdev.com page and follow those instructions and then either flash a rooted rom or the Subusybox.zip to get root
To un-root simply lock the bootloader and run the RUU file

It means that the Security Flags have been turned OFF (S-OFF) and it allows you to write unsigned.img's and do other stuff to parts of the device that with Security ON you wouldn't be able too such as writing to the boot partition while in recovery, flash radios to the radio partition
