I read a ton of threads regarding this very common problem, however I was hoping I could find information more specific to my problem.
I bought the Atrix and it had Nottachtrix. A few of the keys weren't working in portrait mode, and in landscape they all work except the word correction bar. I flashed it back to stock, no difference. I recently flashed Neutrino GT, and still no difference (although the ROM itself has improved the phone IMMENSELY). I used a calibration app, seemed to help a little bit when drawing, however the problem keys in portrait mode (U and N), and correction bar in landscape persist.
I noticed that this phone has def. been taken apart, seems to be a small smudge on the LCD and the screws have wear. I assume he replaced the digitizer.
My question is..Can I try the PDS partition fix running the Neutrino ROM, or would this cause issues? OR, does it sound like I should just replace the digitizer? There seems to be a lot of different digitizers for the Atrix on eBay, I worry I might pick the wrong one. Could I open it up and attempt to "fix" the digitizer?

Its not a PDS problem... you should change the digitalizer or send it to repair.
Aroma Installer With Nowatrix
I dont know about that soto.. Funny coincidence same thing happened to me after running Nowatrix with the aroma installer. my keys are different, letters SZE dont work. Theres a straight line from bottom of screen to top which doesnt react to touch input. Heres the thing though, going back to the aroma installer that "dead zone" line can be moved by calibrating the touch input.. Seems to me what happened on my end was i chose alternate input and then saved the settings.. I know it's only supposed to use the settings within Aroma, but after that my phone has had this "ghost line". Screen worked just fine before using Aroma with Nowatrix.. For a cheap fix i "moved the dead zone as close to the edge of the screen as possible, and use the landscape keyboard at 270 degrees.. Tried the two fixes here on xda, neither worked, but i think the original mmcblk0p3 which btw is in my /dev/block/platform/tegra-sdhci.3 folder , is being rewritten on reboot. Grrr Im so mad, I had just got this tempermental phone running like a charm too.. So just for the record TheFullSpectrum, you can use the calibration gui within the aroma installer to maybe move that dead spot elswhere on your screen to make navigation or selections easier on the touchscreen. or like i said the "rotate phone 270 degree" trick untill someone can think of something to fix this... I wouldnt replace that digitizer just yet Spectrum, or bother opening it.. Aroma did it to me, theres no doubt about that.. Just need to find out now if the damage is as simple as misentered location information from the Aroma calibration gui, that can be reentered or changed back to proper dimensions, or if the calibration technique has actually damaged the screen.. God I hope not the latter.....
I was faced with the same dilemma. I tried the PDS fix and it didn't do anything for me, but I felt as it was free for me to do, it was worth a try. I eventually bought a new digitizer on eBay for ~$45. I have only a few weeks left until I'm eligible for an upgrade on my AT&T plan so I get to sell my phone and get a new one. My advice to you is that if you're anywhere near your upgrade, sell your phone on eBay (as is) and get a new one. You won't make your money back if you install a working digitizer.
Also, I've read that digitizers can go bad at any time. There seems to be an inconsistency in the design process.
Just my 2 cents
EDIT: I was successful on fixing mine but the one I bought didn't come with any type of adhesive or anything so I had to superglue it to the plastic frame. I ended up getting some on the screen and I had to clean it off with acetone. The screen has these ugly stains/marks now that are impossible to remove. It sucks because I was extremely careful during the whole process and I still screwed up. If you end up doing yours, do it in a dust-free environment and be really careful!

I flashed a newer rom onto the phone and since, my touchscreen does not work. I have searched and seen posts that this is a "hardware" issue but since problem occured during the flashing process, I'm hoping it can be fixed.
I have seen something similar in posts about the wifi eeprom being erased. Can something like this have happened to the touchscreen controller?
So far, I have flashed various radios and various OS builds both stock and custom and it is still a no go. I can get past the alignment screen by remotely connecting to the phone and taking out some registry keys (can't remember which right now).
Using Pocket controller I can control the screen except for the screen alignment calibration which wants a pen tap.
Does anyone have any ideas other than "send it in for repair?"
adding...
Just thought I'd add that this was a second machine that I received as payment for helping out a friend. And, while I would have no problem paying to have it repaired or breaking it down to sell as parts, this issue of dying touchscreens gnaws at me as being something fixable through software.
That said, I am not a programmer so maybe I'm just simply wrong. It's an interesting problem though. Makes me wish I knew more about electronics...
I might be way off, but....check the system information for the operating system version, WM 5/6 Professional Is Touch Screen, WM 5/6 Std is not.
Thanks
Thanks for the suggestion but I'm sure the rom I flashed is a touchscreen version.
Well for what it's worth, if anyone is in the same boat, the registry key to delete will be at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\:MSWelcome
delete the entire sub key as well as the value in :MSWelecome that has welcome.exe in it.
hold the power button until the popup comes and then answer yes. when the machine reboots, it should bypass welcome and the screen calibration.
you can get Mobile Registry Editor here:
http://www.breaksoft.com/Blog/Utilities/2005/1/Mobile_Registry_Editor.aspx
this will let you access your phone's registry from the PC. Good Luck
I wouldn't think that it's the flashing process that broke ur touchscreen. Probably something else like a power surge or something. If you already tried flashing different ROMs, then it's definetely not software anymore. But of course, I could be wrong. There may be some low-level programming thingy that crapped up the connection to the touch screen.
Yeah. You're right. I was hoping that if it was a low level thing it could be fixed with software but I guess not. It was worth a shot.

Why dont you try running a very thin visiting card or anything equally thin between the housing and the screen, sometimes if a tiny partical gets lodged inbetween this problem may occur.
Touch Screen Problem
It is a hardware issue, i have had the same problem. There is no software that is going to help you mate. I restored my original t-mobile Rom sent it for repair and they exchanged the unit. Don't forget they have a manufactures warranty.
I tried everything to try to resolve the problem but with no sucess.
good luck
Update
I've narrowed the problem down to the actual touch screen. I can get the touchscreen to function correctly if I put just enough force where the mylar flex cable attaches to the touchpanel.
It is a very odd coincidence that the touchpanel died just as I was flashing from WM5 to WM6. I distinctly remember doing the pen calibration just before flashing so that I could see the screen for any prompts.
I've ordered a new touch panel and now the next challenge will be figuring out how to bond the flex cable of the touch panel to the main flex cable.
Anyone got any ideas on that?
My Raphael doesn't go forward from the align screen since I hard reset on Mystic 6.5 lite ROM. Now I have tried all stock ROMS with the same problem. I Will try to best describe the problem in a chronological order.
1. Had stock ROM latest with TF3D2
2. Flashed to Mystic ROM 6.5 lite, took three cycling of align screen to get through
3. After 24 Hrs lock screen got stuck, no sliding action worked,
4. Performed soft reset, phone boots up to lock screen again.
5. After several tries decided to hard reset
6. Normal boot up until Align Screen, The align screen markers keep rotating on tap, but doesnt pass through to home screen or customization.
The phone connects to active sync, and I can synchronize, flash roms normally.
I like to think that 6.5 ROM changes some screen sensitivity settings, and this is not allowing the screen to align normally. Somehow these settings could be stuck,
I request one of you experts to guide me in getting my expensive phone back. FYI, I have no warranty, I am not even in UK, I have purchased this phone over Ebay, I have flashed around 15 ROMs since my 2 month ownership of the phone, with no problems.

Done that and it successfully skips the alignment section...but.....
It now recognises touches but The touch screen takes wrong inputs, some times it doesnt, how can I recalibrate, without going into align screen, or can I go there too??

Hi, if the align screen markers are not accepting your input, it is more than likely something is interfering like a screen protector or case putting pressure on the screen. (or a digitizer failure)
the only reason it would not accept the inputs is if the data it's receiving is too far from the actual point of the crosses.. it makes you keep cycling through until it's within a level of tolerance..

Thanks for that ready info, really appreciate it.
Though it does give me some promise, but as you know I cant use the touch screen accurately, so installing a cab or changing the registry is near impossible scenario, unless those can be done via a computer. Right now, wherever I click on the screen, the notification area comes up with battery, network strenght info etc.
Do you know of any way how we can clean up the entire TouchPro (waever it means) and make a new flash. I presume flash does that, but then again I think there is some leftovers from previous ROM, as mentioned in the "Flashing your first GSM ROM" sticky, where it is recommended to hard reset immediately after flashing.
All your help required to save the phone and my money going down the drain. It just hurts that I was so much in love with this phone, since using Wizard for 3 years. Cant bear to lose this fight.

Thanks DA_G for considering to help me overcome this.
At the moment I have no screen protector on, I had one on for two weeks, and as it wasnt a good fit and collecting dust underneath, I threw it out arnd 2 days back. I have always used the normal sleeve case from HTC.
If you say there is no other reason for this behavior other than hardware issue, then I have no options left. You mention that the digitizer may be broke, couldnt it be that the software part of the digitizer is broke and we can rectify that.
After using wizard for three years, and that too very roughly, I have like dropped it several hundred of times, and not facing a problem, I refuse to believe HTC quality has dropped down so low. This touch pro was used most carefully for arnd 2 months only.
I still ask you to give me more options before going for hardware replacement. As of now I will remove welcome.not, hard reset and try aligning as long as I can bear it.
hi you should be able to use the keypad to cycle through... is it? i use to have tytn II. so u can install the fix or do a reg edit with it.

I have tried it with the keypad, unfortunately, it doesnt work as well as one would want it to ,,,,unlike the wizard I had.
The biggest problem you face here is to click the left and right soft key commands like OK, UP.
Wizard had the hardware keys for that as a fall back but not here.
I am at my wits end,.....wasnt that long!
Look up Pocket Controller @ Handango (it's expensive, but the demo's great). It allows you to run your ppc remotely. It has a pretty trick regeditor. It's a high octane version of active sync. You can probably align the screen with it (Settings>System>Screen). It shows you a big pic of your touch pro screen on your pc, and you can click things with your mouse.

Well I didnt try that but I used the My Mobiler, well the catch is you cant align your screen using these softwares, you can do all rest, install cabs everything, except align screen.
I believe the hardware digitizer has given up on me, I have just dropped it at the service center, who will ship it to another one, then they will quote for the repairs. So i keep my fingers cross until next week and see how they try to rip me off.
Did you revert to stock rom, radio and spl before you took it in? I hope so.

I reverted to only stock rom and radio, not the SPL.
As it is I havent given it in warranty, so I assumed it wont effect either ways.
It's weird you started having the problem after you removed the screen protector. Why did you remove it? Did it come off easily, or did it stick a little and give you problems? Do you think you might have messed up the screen when you were taking it off?

I dont think that my removal of screen protector could have hurt the screen. As it is the screen protector was stuck on loosely.
The protector I had was a little hard kind and thick kind as opposed to the usual thin layer. I really didnt like it.
I am still of the opinion that WM6.5 rom had changed the sensitivity or some other parameter of the screen to an extent where the hardware couldn't cope. As I first faced the problem with align screen repeating 3 times when I installed that.
Within 24 hrs my digitizer had given up on me. Hence I think, if I the ROM can be completely sanitized and then flashed, the digitizer should work.
I am in no way an expert on these things, but I am just trying to apply some logic.

HTC Fuze Alignment issue
Okay I have an HTC Fuze right, and I did a hard reset on it because the touchscreen was freezing, and working in only certain parts of the screen, so now Everything seems good with the touchscreen except the align screen part.. itwon't let me go past this stage, and Ive been at it for 2 days so can someone please help me out with my issue, I would sincerely appreciate it and thanks.
Dude, there is nothing much that you can do. There are ofcourse ways to skip the calibration screen and get to the desktop, but the functionality of the screen is allready gone.
If you are lucky enough to have a warranty for the thing, its time to use it now !!! If not, then start budgeting for a new phone.
As I didnt have a budget, I am using the phone in this condition since around a year and now thinking to replace it with Nokia N900.
Well I did it... Broke the screen a couple of weekends ago. Ordered and received a new one. (No problem and not too bad price-wise) Then I ordered the correct screwdriver. That came in yesterday and I followed a couple of tutorials online to take the thing apart. Not too bad despite the teeny-tiny parts. I got it back together and lo-it worked! Actually it took a couple of tries and I reflashed it but then it booted right up. All the apps seemed responsive and life was good once again...
Until I tried to make a call. Then the screen went dark and it appeared that the phone froze up. Called myself from the house phone and discovered that the Aria was dialing, connecting, and sending voice but that I couldn't hear anything on the Aria.
Disassembled, re-set the earpiece, reassembled, called myself again, and I could hear. The screen came on and stayed on, but the touchscreen would not function.
Disassembled, checked all the connections, and reassembled again. The phone appears to work correctly in all aspects until I try to make or receive calls. At that point the screen shuts down and the only way to disconnect a call (or get the screen back) is to pull the battery and reboot.
I tried reflashing the ROM and that didn't work. I'm afraid the transceiver is shorting the screen out somehow but have reached the limits of my expertise.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jerry
I have never had to replace my digitizer so only speaking from what i have read but it sounds like the very small rubber piece that covers the proximity sensor. I have read that if missing or not placed correctly people have had the same problem as you. Just my thoughts
I've replaced my digitizer and I have had the exact same problem. E.Cardo is correct, it is the small rubber piece on the proximity sensor not positioned correctly or not present at all.
Thanks to both of you. The proximity sensor is supposed to be right behind the ATT logo, correct?
I can't wait to get home and try this. I really don't like the backup Cliq Xt... I'll post once I've messed with it.

It's hard to see them exactly so I took a picture to show exactly where they are:
http://imgur.com/a/36h8t#ayQhv
It's actually just above the & in the at&t logo, although if you have a replacement digitizer, it might not have the at&t logo on it. If you have trouble seeing it, try looking at it in the sunlight.
To add to what drumist said there as small black rubber piece that goes around the proximity sensor that prevents light seepage and allot of people discard it by mistake when disassembling the phone.

Why did you have to reflash? The new screen didn't worked?.
My aria's screen is broken too. I boutgh a new one but It doesn't work. Do you resolve this reflashing? (that's mean applying the new rom version from ATT)
Thanks for your response.

The screen or digitizer are hardware they should have nothing to do with the rom. The op only tried flashing the phone to illuminate it is a possible source of the problem. It sounds like you did not install the new screen or digitizer correctly you may need to disassemble and make sure everything is connected correctly and securely. Flashing your phone will most likely not correct your problem.

Maybe, just maybe, there are new drivers for the touchscreen included in the rom. I am using cyanogen 7.0.3 without problems, and it works nice with the old screen.
Or the new screen is defective.
I am pretty sure I installed correctly the new screen. Of course the old one is working fine right now.
I requested a new screen so I will wait...
Thanks again.
Having a problem with ALL keyboards (swift, flext9, stock) when tying to type letters on the bottom row (z,x,c,v,b n,m). When trying to input these letters the phone will input the letters directly above. I've read it can be a software or hardware issue. I have pulled the battery, wiped cache, wiped dalvik cache, and ran a superwipe. I was going to try and clear data for the stock keyboard (htc_ime) but cannot find it under Application-Manage application-All. I also tried looking under Application-Manage application-Running; what I found was Touch Input but no options to clear anything. Where is the htc_ime found?
I also noticed when in the dialer that I cannot input *, 0, #. Instead when I press these keys it will input 7, 8, 9, the keys directly above.
I am slowly beginning to believe this is hardware related, but what is weird is that yesterday after wiping cache/dalvik the keyboard worked normally. However, after some time passed, it reverted back to having issues again.
Is there anything else I can try? Could it be possible that the ribbon for the digitizer is loose rather than the digitizer just failing?
Maybe something you did mest up your Calibration you can check by going to.
"Settings ---> Language&Keyboard ---> Touch Input ---> Text Input ---> Calibration tool."
And see if that fixes your problem.
Seems to be known HTC problem for years and they haven't fixed it.
install a free app called 'Draw' from the Play store. When you open it the screen turns black and then slide your finger around and it will leave a line. This will show you if all areas of the digitizer are working. Press your options button to get the menu.
On mine Evo3d the problem started with it randomly starting to start programs or even make a few calls. I now figure that is from the digitizer acting up and behaving as if there was touches in the problem area which happens to cover the stripe of screen about from 1 to 2cm up from the bottom. 0 to 1cm is ok, then 1 to 2cm is bad, then the rest of the screen is ok. What has happened over time is that section of screen no longer seems to trigger phantom touch behavior but it does not register horizontal movement. On the Draw program vertical lines draw fine, horizontal ones leave nothing. Lines drawn at an angle skip and leave vertical lines across the defective area. Unlocking the phone with the Sense ring became almost impossible and I missed numerous calls. Even now that I switched to the slider unlock it is almost all in the bad zone and I have occasional problems getting the phone unlocked.
References are phone held vertical.
The problem originally happened on the stock rom, rooted. I figured it was a software thing so wiped the phone and took the opportunity to install LeeDroid. The problem still exists.
Using the calibration tool or any of several other suggestions does nothing.
Oddly touching keys works for typing and even SlideIT keyboard works though the line it leaves jumps around like crazy. I can't play some games that require that area of the screen. On programs that allow rotating I can usually get it to work as this moves the problem to a different area.
I really don't like friends with iPhones and other brands laughing at my phone.
I started searching Google and there are a LOT of other complaints going back several years and on numerous models, but no real solution. I am disappointed that the response from HTC seems to be that failures are within what they consider acceptable because the solution seems to be return the phone as it is a hardware failure though they do not admit to it. Some people report having the problem within a week on a phone that they left completely stock to see if it really was a user software thing. Some have had the replacement phones quit within a short time as well which makes you wonder if they even replace the digitizer when they recondition them. The actual complaint probably never makes it to the tech so if it works good for 10 seconds out it goes.
I am not very happy with the 'return it' solution since I have a $25 Zagg protector on the screen I will lose and it takes time to set up a new phone, and from the sounds of things the replacement isn't a guaranteed fix. Finding out that it is a known quality control issue that is still present after numerous years has soured me on HTC. If it was a rare occurrence I could understand but not when I read so many reports.
My last flip phone was indestructible and from Samsung. After all the hassles with crappy charge connectors and keyboard contacts from dust at work on a Motorola flip it was a true pleasure. I intend my next phone will be Samsung.

@mugsaway
when you need to type those keys in the dialer try turning your phone sideways as the dialer should rotate.
{ Disclaimer: the following text is my view about this problem. I'm not in any way responsible for any damage }
As there is very little info known about this phenomena I will try to explain it. I learned a lot of disassembly guides and by visualizing it (settings-development-show touches)
Ghost touch is a strange phenomena of various types and is due to a hardware fault between the mainboard connector and digitizer screen, I'm therefore trying to clarify it by categorizing them in three groups:
1. Small; Screen is unresponsive. 1 lock/unlock and it works again. Almost perfect. No need to replace screen. Most common.
2. Large; Same as 1, and often up to 5 touches and the touches are often moving/pressing parts of the screen. This can become a very frustrating period. Messaging apps and settings can be messed up by these touches. Often a lock/unlock will fix this temporary. A full screen replacement is recommended
3. Unworkable; Same as 2, and the lower and upper part are not working anymore. Notfications bar can not be pulled down anymore, typing become a nuisance and it not possible anymore and you curse your phone. Also it is not even possible to insert your pin, unlock your phone etcetera. This problem will not be fixed by a restart/reset or lock/unlock. A full screen replacement is essential.
Many people say this can be fixed by software settings, however this is a hardware fault. I tried many different roms and I encountered at all of them. The only fix that can be done to fix this is replacing of the full screen as it is not possible to apply/remove your digitizer.
For a long time I thought it was due to the degrading digitizer or something, in fact it is probably the connection between the and the mainboard. The screen has two digitizers: One for the touchscreen and one for the home/settings/back/search buttons. For some reason this last one did not cause any trouble. The first one has a flex cable from the upper part of the screen leading toward a small hole and heading to the mainboard. The problem will probably reside in the part between the digitizer and the small hole. Here, just above the screen, the flex cable is folded 180 degrees. This fold will cause the problem as it is very sensitive. Mine has a very small damaged part, the copper parts are visible. The cause of this is due to the rubbing of the bezel just under the speaker.
How to fix it?
Buy a new screen including digitizer (often HTC & Sprint branded) and make sure you protect this part as much as you can.
EDIT:
I re-inserted my old LCD display with a bit of tape around the damaged part. Since then I haven't had any ghost touches.
Mine was ghost touching so bad it was completely unusable for a few days. I was thiiiiiiis close to buying a new phone, then one day it just stopped and hasn't done it again since. Very strange. Anyhow, I will be replacing it with an s4 when the price comes down to $100 for us SERO users.
Ghost touch
Nice explanation, and nice 3 lvl sorting but, tell me one thing... I have experience with lvl 1 and 2 (two different phones) and for both of them simple ROM change / reinstall helped to solve this problem.
For ex. I had JB [ROOTBOX] ROM since the last week.. ghost touch problems were getting worse and worse with each new day yet lock/unlock still worked quite well.
I decided to test new JB MIUI ROM and like a magic touch my ghost friend is gone since than, but I am afraid he will return more powerfull than ever... oops that is a different story. However my phone is now working fine ... no ghosts detected.
So please don't tell me that this problem is only mechanical problem ( due to ROM change / reinstall worked multiple times). Actually I am pretty sure that is software problem which is supported by hardware hitches.
My friends "ghost story" is pretty similar.. but he reinstalled back original ICS ROM.
PS: I don't want to start flame war with this reply. It is just mix of my experience and opinions.
