installing kernels - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im running ICS Omega v9 but when I go to flash a kernel ( speedmod or Siyah ) i goto CWM click flash kernel and no matter what kernel I try I get the error " no zImage was found "
any ideas please.

Looks like you are using the Odin version of those kernels, download the cwm zip for those kernels and flash back

select zip and just unzip to get the same to zimage file and use it to falsh from CWM manager,
but make sure you dont have any other previouse zimage file on the SD card, if there just delete.
enjoy
or you put zip file on SDcard and go to CWM recovery by rebooting into Clockworkmod or by Vol-up+Home +Power, and select install zip to install, navigate to zip and select yes.....

brilliant thank you that worked a treat...now to test it

good.......

One more quick N00b question...inside

I downloaded Mcnut R13 and unzipped it. Where do I find the pit file and the tar file for PDA using Odin?
You dont unzip it, and you dont need odin to flash mancut, download rom manager and flash it with rom manager.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I see. But is there a way to flash it using Odin? I would like to learn how to use it in case I soft brick it.
So I do have Rom Manager installed already but never used it. It doesn't need to be unzipped?
And how do I change kernels using Rom Manager and Odin?
Please read my sticky's before you continue and mess up your phone.
I've read this guide already. It doesn't really explain how to use Rom Manager. And if it somehow it does and I missed it I apologize.
I'll keep searching in the Q&A forum.
It has the steps to rom manager step by step... not trying to sound rude, just making sure you do not F up.

My apologies. Instructions are there and I read them last night. I just didn't remember reading anything about if the file containing the rom needed to be zipped or unzipped. Unless it was in one of the videos...
Just tried to install from the internal SD card. I placed the unzipped folder in the internal SD under a folder named R13. Then I checked the option to backup the rom but not to wipe data.
Long story short, installation aborted. Message was: Can't open /sdcard/sd/Mcnut_R13.Zip (No such file directory)
Someone told me it had to be unzipped first. But if it's looking for a file that ends in .Zip, maybe this is wrong.
no you don't unzip it at all...
download rom
put it on root of sd card (i.e. not in any folder)
boot into clockworkmod recovery via rom manager
if you get booted into stock recovery just keep choosing 'reinstall packages' until you get into CWM
make a backup of your current rom in case things go wrong
once thats done, choose 'install zip from sdcard' (4th option)
choose 'choose zip from sdcard'
navigate to preferred rom to install and push the power button to flash it
wait for it to finish and then reboot your phone
enjoy

How to flash a custom rom

Hi,
I'm having problems installing a custom rom and need your help!
Here's what I did:
0) Installed the lastest SW (version 2.1.1.A.0.6 + baseband M76XX-TSNCJOLYM-53404015)
1) Rooted and installed xRecovery without any problems at all
2) I place a custom room in the root of the sd card (tried several different ones)
3) Boot up in xRecovery
4) Select "factory reset" (with succes)
5) Select "Install custom zip" - "choose custom zip from sdcard" and then select my custom rom and answer "yes"
Then therese a shot flash of events, but it's too fast to read. At any rate nothing is installed. I'm able to restore my backup with any problems.
How come I can't install a rom?
Thanx all!

Thanks, but that one didn't work either.
Sry about the wrong section posting!
easy dude !
1. make sure it's .zip file.
2. open the .zip and have alook at it's containments
3. if there is only one folder with the name of the ROM, then u need to extract that .zip and put the extracted folder in SD\ xrecovery\ backup then use "restore" from xrecovery menu
else if u find two folders "meta" and "system", then it simply should have worked!
4. never mind the SPAMMERs

6. only *rar are supposed to be backups (for example racht roms.)
edit: @ OP - it must work. just copy those 3 files to system/bin , reboot. try several times if don't work immediately

[q] İcs remİx rom v7.1 help

Hi,
I currently own a rooted SGS2,
I rooted it yesterday and it has Superuser and CMW.
I am trying to flash İCS REMİX ROM V7.1 XXLP2 4.0.3 resurrection
Ive downloaded and put it into phone/clockworkmod/backup folder (or whever it is supposed to be)
when i reboot my phone into CMW recovery mode and i choose to restoe the downloaded custom Rom, it says it cannot find system.img cache.img etc etc.. and then it says it has skipped the restore process.
when i checked the folder that i downloaded from İCS REMİX ROM V7.1 XXLP2 4.0.3 resurrection, all the files are in .tar format except the boot.img
anyone know how to solve this??
Some1 just had same problem, and I thinkbthe files are in tar format so if they are, learn more about flashing.

CWM backup
It is a CWM backup, you have to put the zip file you get after unrar in the folder sdcard/clockworkmod/backup. DO NOT UNZIP
I did that, and after I unrar-ed the downloaded file, I got a folder containing tar files , one md5 file and a boot.img
I also had some trouble restoring this ROM and what worked for me was to get a standard 4.0.3 ROM that you can install from zip from the sdcard and then only do the restore from the backup as they say in the intro of that thread.
Hope this helps

I currently do have a different 4.0.3 Rom installed from zip on my Galaxy s2,
so what you did was you did a restore from backup with ICS remix rom 7.1??
Yes I unzipped the File and copied the folder to the clockworkmod/backup folder. Then boot into cwm go backup and restore and restore from that date folder. Thanks to Wescrip and all the dev on that thread. They've done an awesome job so far.

I did exactly what you mentioned above, however I get error messages such as data.img not found cache.img not found,... then it says it's skpped it all and the restoration process becomes aborted...
is it because the files in the folder are in .tar format not .img?
That might be a problem with the Kernel or the CWM version you using. Not too sure.
What I can tell you is these are the steps I followed and they worked 100% for me.
1. For the first ROM i installed I downloaded this one - http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/GalaxyS2/roms/CM9ICS/update-cm-9-SGS2-01122012-signed.zip
(Thanks to max at galaxy S2root.com for the link)
2. I did a full wipe and factory reset from CWM and then installed this zip file from sdcard.
3. I booted my phone and let it start up. Then switch off again and go into CWM.
4. Then chose restore from backup and restore (as you will see CWM is now 5.5.x.x which might have a influence not sure)
5. Let it start up and bob's your uncle.
Edit : just fyi there seems to be a problem with the cwm that comes with that rom as it doesn't read the sdcard and I couldn't restore from it. So either you must flash a new cwm from odin when you want to restore to your old rom or install the first rom again so you have a working one and then restore.

[Q] Converting a .zip ROM into .tar to flash with Odin

I was asking if there's any way to convert a .zip ROM into a .tar ROM to flash with Odin..
The reason why I'm asking this is because I'm unable to flash any ROM via CWM recovery. I can only flash ROMs via Odin. Please see this for further information to my problem.
I'm particularly fond of the MIUI ROM, but there's no Odin version of that.. and CWM doesn't work for me

This is the installation instructions from adys miui rom which i usually use...not sure if you do this already but this usually works for me (wipe cache n devlik aswell)
1. Copy Zip to SDCard.k
2. Reboot to Recovery.
3. Wipe data/factory Reset.
4. Wipe /system from Mounts and Storage.
5. Install *your Rom* zip from SDCard.
6. Reboot (First boot may take time due to alot of init.d scripting)

Tried it, converted a kernel .zip file to.tar for Note 2 and it blue-screened Win7 during .tar installation. No damage to PC or phone, but DAYUM!

I don't think direct conversion like that will ever work, just ask the related developer to generate a tar file for you, ask one of the most helpful devs like salesale(NeatRom creator) or the dev of RevoltRom.

Why?
You'd need to write a script that specifies what files get flashed to where & create your own flashable zip. Or you could swap the files from the tar into an existing CWM flashable I guess; not sure if this will work tho, the script may be specific to those particular files & might not work with different ones (I'm not au fait with these scripts, hence not being sure). I personally wouldn't try this tho, just flash the tar in Odin already.
The last sentence says it all

That's easy (well can cause catastrophe if handled without proper knowledge) just use android kitchen.
Edit :Seriously though must be very careful, I used it to deodex JB firmware for my tab 7 plus (it doesn't have any proper developer support so had to do it manually) and I had a plethora of minor bug's popping up, insignificant but annoying nonetheless, quite frankly must be ready to spend hours for proper tweaking and understanding framework to build a good flashable zip, I didn't have the patience nor the time.

Could I make one for you ? Absolutely not.
I don't sit around all day doing nothing just waiting for n00bs to give me stuff to do for them. If you really want to make one, you'll work out how to do it for yourself. Or you won't *shrugs*

Actually doesn't install from internal sd card it is the same
It's been madded because I have found some problems in other
Like 1- change directory of backup from \extsdcard\clockworkmod to \extsdcard\0\clockworkmod\
so first can't find the backup of the second
2-problems in installing roms like t3romv2 (causes a bootloop)
So making this one will help solve this problems without need to Odin

okay... looking at the /etc/recovery.fstab i don't see any mount point named extsdcard o_o
and i don't know about bootloop on t3romv2 cause i havent flashed it..
and it seems like you have dumped the recovery partition.. that's why your recovery.img exactly 10mb ...
did you made changes with adb push while on recovery?? if so changes made are lost with reboot.. and i guess you ended up with the unmodified version.. .
