[REQ] Porting Samsung's ICS ROM to SGP - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

Just a personal request as I enjoy Samsung services that are current not present in both CM9 and AOKP builds. Hope that this can be done and thanks in advance!

Nothing wrong with asking, but try to not post in development unless you actually have something you developed (some people around here get really upset about that sometimes )

Same here. I'd love to see a TouchWiz ICS port for our Galaxy Player.

I was really hoping someone could do it. Will any skilled developer take hold of this project?

Porting Newest Touchwiz-UX ROM
I know that this is a really old thread to bump, but with the new Touchwiz-UX of the GS3, it is even more appealing to have. I really hope someone would port this, even though we have a Remics-UX ROM that replicates the newer Touchwiz.
Please reply if you are interested.

I've actually worked on this with my dev team and v2.x.x of RemICS-UX was supposed to be based on Samsungs ICS. However we've kind of abandoned the idea as it was too difficult to implement. It only works on devices which already have an ICS ROM from Samsung as that make a lot of changes when compared to AOSP

CM7 development?

I understand that ICS roms will come in the future after the kernel has been leaked or recreated and/or there is a full stock ICS leak, but isnt it possible to create a CM7 rom with the materials we have available? I just wanted to know if CM7 development is a possibility right now. Thanks

Cm7 looking dated now .... cm9... now that's where the sweet stuff is

I know CM9 is coming SOON but I'm talking about right now. CM7 roms would be infinitely more feasible than debloated edited themed stock roms. Not to say the devs aren't doing an amazing job

How is cm7 obsolete? Or dated for that matter, so how obsolete is stock gingerbread?? I think cm7 is a great rom, with endless ways of customizing, with tons of themes already in the market for free, is just like saying what's the point of all these Roms in our note android development forum because there all based on stock gingerbread . I think cm7 would be a great addition for those that think ginger is it and don't care much for an ics update, but that's my opinion. I wish I had the time and knowledge with a linux environment to develop cm7 for the note.
RoloRacer on Galaxy Note!
I highly urge we talk to a developer and see if they are interested in getting this started. Unfortunately I have no experience programming or doing rom creation otherwise I would have started asap loving the devs we got here though

Cm9

If cm9 is on the touch pad which uses the snapdragon just as we do, and we have a ics leak why can't we have cm9 yet? I know when I had my epic 4g touch like a day after the samsung ics leak dropped someone built a cm9 rom... Please don't flame. I'm mearely asking a question in the q & a thread... Thanks!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
I'm guessing it's the lack of kernel source.
But they don't have kernel source for ics on the epic 4g touch either... They built a tweaked Gingerbread kernel to run cm9. And I couldn't tell a difference it ran a amazingly

I was thinking that it was the lack of kernel source, but I don't know based on the modified GB kernel post. CM9 would be awesome though. I like to keep things as stock and clean as possible. I don't even put aftermarket parts on my car LOL.

you know what devs we need here , the devs from the htc leo/hd2 that took a windows mobile phone and turned it into a development phone that could run any 5 OS like a champ, I had CM9 on my hd2 for 2 months before I got my Note and I ran AOSP ICS prior to that for a month and it's smooth as hell. We never had any kind of actual source for anything for it, actually devs were porting everything from the nexus one/nexus s/sensation/evo/incredible/desire hd and made it work , hacking all kinds of kernels , so yeah there were issues when a new port would come out like camera not working(most common issue) but never the less it always came around, now our biggest downfall is the fact that samsung decided to use two different processors with the two versions of the note, if they only would have used the same processor it would have definitely be a different ball game, it would be one forum and all the devs for the n7000 and the i717 would be working together and we would be using cm9 from the great dev imilka from the hd2 forum.
Agreed. I wish I knew how to dev. On the original evo we had great devs also... These devs just rather sit around and wait for the easy way I guess. Idk.

I just stated my opinion ... Oh well!

well I'm no dev but I'm working at trying to make the necessary changes and hopefully get imilka's cm9 booting up in our notes, but I'm confident that with the help from imilka I can get it to boot and hopefully have a working cm9 soon.

Please keep that attitude to yourself, so as to not annoy the devs who do things for everyone, INCLUDING YOU for ....

No. "ATT Note" implies i717. If they would have just said "Note", that would have been vague. Throwing ATT in there makes it clear as day.

Hello I'm fairly new to Android and I'm just getting to know about flashing and hacking. But what does aokp stand for and what is it, along with cm9. I wouldn't be asking questions but I don't know where to look here. Can someone give me a thread where I can find out about all these terms and what not.. Thank you, greatly appreciated

AOKP stands for Android Open Kang Project, CM9 is CyanogenMod 9. Basically they are both similar roms that are built from open source vanilla android, and can be built for basically any android phone so long as a developer is willing to put in the time. They both share some code with each other, yet AOKP tends to have a few more tweaks, and both are crazy fast. They also have a theme engine that allows people to make themes that can be applied on any phone running AOKP or CM9, regardless of which phone.
As for learning other stuff, I point you here for terminology: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22223555
And for how to root/rom go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24539068
I suggest just taking some time on stock to learn the ins and outs of how the stock software works, and reading as much as possible on here, before you try to do anything.

Both are based off of AOSP which is the Android Open Source Project. Google released the source code for Android ICS and developers take that code and make their own roms. CyanogenMOD is basically pure Android ICS but with some extras. AOKP is based on AOSP but with themes, tweaks, etc. They both are different and both very good.
We currently have both roms but unofficial versions of the roms.
AOKP: http://aokp.co/index.php/news
CyanogenMOD: http://www.cyanogenmod.com/
An official before source drops Nice. Unofficial still works great though.
I thought AOKP was based on CM9

hmmm...lol...was reading the development threads to see how easy it would be for a noob at dev-ing like my self to do it. The only factor that bothers me is not knowing the ins and outs of linux/ios desktop software.
Sounds and looks difficult. The Spen stuff is dependant on Touchwiz. So that must mean they somehow got all the touchwiz dependencies working in an AOSP based ROM, without needing an actual stock ROM

It would be awesome though, wonder why the links don't work anymore.
So I reached out to Gerrett the Dev who put together the Vengeance Note Edition MIUI Rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1688646). He said he might be up for the challenge but he needs to know the differences between the International and ATT note from a Dev stand point, and will need volenteers to test the rom and send log cats. I expressed my interest in offering my help and I sure others will join in, but I just need some help from one of our Devs to turn to when he has questions about our device. Any Devs interested in helping out?

Developing ROMs?

Hi, I was interested in building an ICS ROM for the galaxy player 4.2. After compiling ICS from the source, what steps do you need to take to make it into a ROM?
Sent from my YP-GI1 using xda app-developers app
I'm afraid it's not THAT simple. AFAIK, there is a lot of work to be done before a booting ICS can be achieved. If you have no prior experience in android ROM development, I don't think this is a task you should take up right now. ICS compiled from the AOSP will not work on the 4.2 without modification and an ICS kernel, both of which are far beyond my current technological skill. Also this should be in general. Yes, I know it IS development related, but this IS a development site. Questions belong in the general thread. Thanks.
Odp: Developing ROMs?
Well starting by practice is good way imo. I did so But wothout knowledge, you have to be extremely patient
Send from sg wifi5.0 with mine kernel
I understand, maybe I can look at how it was achieved on the other players and it might be similar?
Sent from my YP-GI1 using xda app-developers app
I wouldn't look at the other players, as the 4.2 is pretty different from the 4 and 5. Try finding another Samsung product with similar hardware. Example: the galaxy player 5.0 is very similar to the SGS i9000 , Nexus S (crespo), and GTab p1000.
Sent from my YP-G70 using xda app-developers app
Okay, but I'm pretty sure the 4.2 is similar to nexus s?
Sent from my YP-GI1 using xda app-developers app
Compare specs. Find out.
Sent from my YP-G70 using xda app-developers app
Odp: Developing ROMs?
by specs our devices are quite similar, by kernel etc. less but still similar.
I think that good and interesting way of learning is to add same/similar modifications as on crespo/aries and try to understand how does it accually work.
Send from sg wifi5.0 with mine kernel
Thanks for the help guys. I'm quite busy at the moment catching up with school work, I'll see what I can do this weekend.
Sent from my YP-GI1 using xda app-developers app
Hell, the 4.2 might even get an official update. Unlikely, but possible. IDK if Samsung has made a statement about this, but it only came out last year. (I think)
I called Samsung and asked about official updates and they said the 4.2 won't be getting any because the specs aren't good enough....

Thats a lie. there was a device called the Galaxy Music that had an 800 mHz processor that got JB.
Samsung wont update the galaxy players because they are much cheaper compared to phones (take the s3 for example, it costs 700-800 bucks if you get it without a contract)
I'd suggest reading through the following threads if you haven't already. Then ask about the specific parts there you're not understanding.
[GUIDE] How to port ROMs to the Galaxy Players
[Guide]Rom Development for Dummies (and a few other things)
And I found this one that describes the complete process for the aospa rom. You should be able to adapt the details for whatever rom you're working on.
[GUIDE][AOSPA:v3.+] How to Compile AOSPA from Source : + Support and Maintenance
That won't work until there is a working ICS kernel though. And even after that is completed, work will need to be done on the ROM.
