So I am looking for a mid to low end Android phone for my father. I have just got myself the HTC One X, but that is too big for him.
I have considered the HTC One V as it isn't too big, but is also modern. I don't want to get anything that is not fairly new (Android 4.0/Upgradable to 4.0), and it must be available in the UK.
Really, £25 a month is the most I am looking at
Will thank any realistic posts!
Thanks
You could look at the Samsung Galaxy W. ICS is only via CM though, which is currently an alpha.
try like mine, SE Live with walkman.
powerful n cheap.
got 1ghz cpu, 512 ram, xloud, mdpi, official ics upgrade.

In a few months it's gonna be time for me to upgrade my phone. I was so sick of the xperia x10 w/ all of sony's and AT&T's holdups. Is anyone else thinking of getting the ARC?
I like some of sony's UI features, like the camera. Google's stock camera is disgusting. But I havent used it because I have to run a custom 2.2 rom that it doesnt work with.
I say go for a HTC
Like sensation
It is a beast ...
Or desire s

But Sensation battery life sucks afaik. I'd go for the SGS II as most of the people do at the moment. Only thing is, compared with the Arc, all the other phones (and especially the SGS II and HTC phones) look boring and generic
With GB and custom kernels, my X10 will hopefully stay with me until the next generation of phones is revealed Maybe I'd even go for a MeeGo device, if Android apps are finally supported. Its perfomance and multitasking are really impressive and it'd be a nice change to see something different from Android.
I'm gonna stick with x10 until a beautiful next generation phone comes out. Or I may buy xperia ray, looks great and smaller than arc with pretty much same specs and front camera for video/skype calling.
Sg2 is great, after I tried in shop, but man its ugly.
I may sound a bit old fashioned but I'm getting annoyed with these massive brick phones, smaller for me please

I have a x10 and I ugraded to the atrix dual core 4G. Which is awesome and really fast. The arc is to outdated in hardware specs. But I know the arc has a good camera and has gingerbread.

For me the ARC is a definite no go. If your upgrading on a 2 year contract, then I would say loud and clear "stay as far away from the ARC as you can". In my opinion the arc has the same shelf life as the x10. However, if you have been happy in the main with the x10, then you can go for the beautiful design of the arc over the competency and performance of the other phones (SGS2, Optimus 3d and Sensation).
Personally, I now have a very different view of smartphones to that which I had last year. Then I had the view that they were just cleverer phones but now I know that they are more like mini computers. I wouldn't buy a single core computer for the same price as a dual cored machine because it looked prettier. The same, for me anyways, now applies to smartphones.

exactly...
buying an arc now or soon at the price it is would be cheating yourself in some way imo.
Sure it looks nice, but imagine in 6 months time how dated it will be.
Do yourself a favour and either wait till SE releases something current, or buy something current
no way to get one more SE phone. done with them, i'm heading for SGS2 or LG Optimus 3D in the 2nd half of the year.
SE burned their bridges with me on the x10.
I was always a big SE fan and had nothing but good things to say about them.
But the x10 ruined it for me, so i will have to swap brands for a company that cares about it customers.
If SE had made effort with the X10, i would have bought a newer SE phone but they dropped us in the water.
there is no change in hell i give another 400 Euros for 16m colors, bravia engine and unlocked bootloader, even if i was rich.
If i wanted to buy a new phone i d buy samsung galaxy s2.
NO, Arc is ugly, But might go xperia Neo or Active(underwater video shotting)
Nah it's like buying a Nexus One now, you might as well wait and get something that has a newer lifespan.
There is Q&A section for posting this.
Finally time to buy a new phone. My Xperia X10 has failed so bad. I'll never go with SE again. Which is sad.
I am selling off my 2 year old HTC Legend tomorrow. I want to buy a new Android phone with atleast
1GHz processor
Adreno 205 or better GPU [I wont play games on it, I have iPod Touch 4G for that]
WVGA upwards resolution
5MP camera AF
Android 4.0 ICS support and loads of Custom ROMs!
The options in my range are,
1. SE Xperia Neo V
2. Samsung Nexus S
3. SE Xperia Ray
4. Samsung Galaxy SL
5. LG Optimus 2X
Why isn't the SGS2 on your list?
I just made the switch to it, and can attest to the pure love that it exudes.
it's called budget concious
all the ones listed above are under $400
SGS2 is at least over that
so from that list
the only worthy phone to buy now is the Nexus S that will get the official ICS4
all the other ones are "you might get ICS4, but most likely never" list
I would choose the optimus 2x over the nexus s since it's dual core and nexus s is not and they will both be getting ics. My dad has a nexus s and trust me, dual core phones make a huge difference in the speed and snappy-ness of the phone lol. I don't know much about the SE phones.. but you can look them up and compare them easily. Good luck
Which GPU is faster? Adreno 205 or SGX540? Which phone will get first ICS based ROM? I am finalizing between Neo V and Nexus S.
check out Amazon. I think for about $30 more, you could probably score the SGS2.
Both SE phones will receive ICS port soon, and SE released and public Alpha of it.
So I am contemplating getting a new android phone because I can't stand the slow speeds and general lag of my ZTE blade anymore.
I want to buy offline, am in the UK and looking to spend around £220 tops.
I would ideally like it to ship with close to stock ICS and have a decent camera (doesn't need to be amazing) and obviously be ARMv7. The main thing for me is software, I want a smooth experience, with a solid android build.
I really want a Xiaomi Mi One, but they are simply impossible to get hold of outside China at a decent price.
Now heres the dilemma....theres a great offer on the HTC EVO 3D at UK store Asda at the moment for £207 all in. However I think it's ugly, 3D is a useless gimmick as far as i'm concerned and from what I hear it has terrible battery performance. I also hate Sense. However given the fact it has a QHD display, 1GB Ram and a dual core scorpion it is probably the best specd new android phone you can get for the price at the moment in the UK and there is a rumoured ICS upgrade.
The other option I had in mind was the Huawei honor which I could pick up for around £220 shipped from China. I like the styling, it has a huge battery and is shipping now with a close to stock good 4.0.3 build. However it only runs a single Core 1.4ghz Qualcomm scorpion and only has 512mb Ram.
I had considered the LG Optimus 2X but have heard only bad things. Xperia Play was an option too as I thought a game pad might be nice but again, hate the Sony skin and clean stock ICS is not an option. Nexus S would be great but they still cost £250+ and would ideally like expandable storage too.
I would like to run MIUI but can't be assed to mess around with all these half baked alpha/beta roms. Also a lot of the normal ICS builds I've seen about for the EVO look buggy.
Just want some reasonable hardware with a smooth ICS experience with as few bugs as possible and minimal hassle.
Any help in deciding or any other options I may have missed out on would be appreciated.....
I bought a Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman (WT19i) last week and am really happy with it.
I paid EUR150 in Ireland (Meteor) on a pre-paid plan and paid another $15 to get it sim unlocked and bootloader unlocked.
Audio is great. It has a single core scorpion that can easily be overclocked to 1.4 Ghz. The Adreno core runs surprisingly smooth. (Cant see a difference in performancy between my Galaxy Nexus and Live, although they do have different resolutions)
For the money this is the best low/midrange phone for sure will handle everything you throw at it really well.
Unlocking is a bit of a pain though (you have to peel off a sticker behind the battery to find test points and ground one of those points to unlock).
Currently running an alpha of MIUIv4 on it. It is very smooth but not yet feature complete.
Yeah, seen that, looks decent, was looking for something with a bit more screen real estate though, I found even the 3.5 inch on my ZTE blade a bit cramped.

phones 4 u are doing a great deal on the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc £199.00 great phone big screen 1.4ghz chip and there phone comes unlocked as well
Ooo, thanks for that. Basically the same spac as the Honour with a better camera and larger screen although batter capacity is smaller (saying that Sony's power saving is probably better anyway). It also looks like Sony are cooking up a tasty little ICS rom as well which is supposed to be dropping end of this month. This could be the one...

My girlfriend has the arc and battery is much better than my lg with a really good camera. Only problem she found is after a month the screen came loose and literally hangs off but to be fair it was an O2 refurb.
Really nice phone and pretty snappy too.

Yeah, i'm not wild about the styling but it appears to be nice and trim, and can't really go too wrong with a Sony Camera. The ICS beta is looking pretty tidy though...

Galaxy Nexus, I have one and I love it.
Love to have one, unfortunately can only stretch to about £220.
I am thinking abote some options, and I can't decide...
any help would be nice XD.
my options:
- Sony Xperia Sola (cuz of the price, but what I dont like is the singel-core mali-400 GPU and only 512mb ram... dose it matter? can it play GTA 3?)
-Mtorola Razr (or MAXX - shuld I wait for the Maxx? does it whorth the price?)
-Asus padfone - for obvious Reasons, but when will it be available? price?
Or the timing is bad? cuz I see that the SGSIII is abote to come and other phones, I dont wannabe stuck with an old unsupported phone after less then 9 monthes....
Thank's...
P.S. If the post is in the wrong plase, Im sorry... Im new on XDA.
Could wait and see what sgs3 has to offer. To be honest I'm not too big a fan of the sola or raze. If anything the asus
I upgraded my x10 to the HTC one x last week. This phone is a beast. Absolutely amazing

thx, but I must say, Im not a fan of quad-core, I think its useless when a duel-core crotex a-15 can do better.
also, 4.3 is the largest screen for me....
abote the one s, any good? is has almost the same hardware as the padfone - is sense and the beats audio are better then the "tablet-abilyti? (what I do with my phone is play music mostly and game and camera...)
It will be a sad day when i finally lay my old x10 to rest
Im looking forward to seeing what the sgs3 has to offer... although if my x10 keeps chugging along the same as always, i could be checking out sgs4 or 5 or 6
Why not consider the xperia s? Sony Ericsson has disappointed me plenty but this new Sony phone has specs that are incredible...1.5 ghz dual core processor..with GB of ram with 32GB of internal storage...with the best screen quality of any smartphone out there..that would be my choice =)

Yeah but they need to hurry up on ICS, that's the only smartphone released in 2012 that has Gingerbread, hopefully they will get on to that. And battery life too, hopefully it will be tweaked on ICS.
I want dat dem phone so bad. And yes, I'm not a quad core fan either, but I'm a pc specs fan.
Thx again,
Abote the xperia s - im realy no fan of SE after the satio and the x10,
Also I NEED a SD card slot on my phone... (and its realy pricy - it costs like the "karait" phones out ther
And another thing, does the sola (like the U) has the smatheadset in the box?

My girlfriend is looking to update from her ancient x8. The problem is that she can't even fit my Gnex in her jeans, let alone sit down with it in her pocket which rules out the GNex/OneX/SIII trinity and their competition.
My extensive Google-fu come up with nothing useful. If you want smaller screens you have to compromise on RAM and processor specs. What more, many are obscure and without much developer support, many stuck on Gingerbread. Am I missing something? Any decent phone I overlooked?
In essence, I need a phone with:
- under 4 inch display
- international GSM, she's on Australian Telstra network
- bootloader unlock/root, with a an alive dev community (easy SIM unlock a huge plus)
- able to flash ICS/JB, if it comes with GB
- 1GHz CPU at least, obviously more is better
- decent RAM size
Personally, a Nexus S seems like her best option, but can a 2 year old phone really be all that's on offer?
Xperia p or u.
Ray was my jeans favourite but it's not exactly high end.
P and ray have ics already, u getting it this week as far as I know. Also I'm pretty sure p and u will get jelly, ray might but I wouldn't bet on it, at least not officially.
Sony makes the best phones for girls in my opinion.
HTC Desire S. Telstra branded ones support NextG. HTC have just released ICS RUU for the Desire S (Europe), so Telstra version should follow.
Great dev community, so CM10 is also available.
