[Q] Has anyone tried this solar charger? - Eee Pad Transformer Accessories

I was wondering if anyone has tried this solar charger, any input would be greatly appreciated. http://www.sobuying.com/products/So...let-pc,-Cell-phone,-MP3,-Laptop-11200mAh.html

Voltage looks like it would work, but it needs a USB 3.0 adapter to charge from...otherwise it won't connect to the tablet.

You will need to use one of the higher voltages (between 12V and 16VDC) but have it go to a USB connector. Most USB chargers will ONLY output the standard 5 VDC via the USB tip to protect USB devices. Since the Transformer charges using 15 VDC you need to put this across pin 1 and 4 on the USB connector.
It does not need to be USB 3.0. The TF wall wart uses the extra USB 3.0 pins to charge, but 15 VDC is not a USB 3.0 standard (it is still 5 VDC).
I did a DIY 12 VDC charger for my car. I took a USB charger and stripped it, wired it so the 12 VDC from the car just runs straight through to the USB connector. Charges like a champ, but you do not want to use it for any other USB devices or it may fry them.

[Q] The AC - DC charger

The machine (US verion) came with a 100v-240v AC to DC USB charger. The label mentioned 5-15V
1) Does it mean it can charge the machine 15V AND any other 5V smartphone as well?
2) Is there any other way I can charge up my machine? is there any way I can get the 12v from my desktop USB socket?
Please help me if you know...

Note a: DevCake posted a thread here showing the USB plug is actually USB 3.0 style (not standard) where pin 7 (USB 3 only) triggers switch from 5v to 15v for tablet only.
Note b: DevCake and many others have posted alternatives to the wall wort, where you plug in your ASUS proprietary 40 pin cable to female USB charging at 11v-15v. Warning, if you plug your iPad, iPhone, cellphone, etc., into 11v-15v you will KILL them.
Note c: USB sockets on laptop/pc only provide 5v, where USB 2 is 0.5 amp & USB 3 is 1.0 amp. Neither is up to 11v-15v required by the TF101 tablet & dock to activate the charging indicator.
PS: In my opinion, only idiots (or desperate) trickle charge their tablet with 5v, by turning off the tablet and waiting days for full charge.

Charging cable and usb gender changer

Has anyone tried a USB female to female gender changer on the charging cable to hookup a thumb drive or controller?
Yep, tried a USB 2.0 and 3.0 adapter. No dice.
Damn! I really don't like that bulky usb adapter. I have a fear of breaking my port. The cable is bad enough.
You can build your own: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102049
At the end of the thread there are some photos of USB adapter board and the list of components you need.
EDIT: Found some pinout schema: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19566215&postcount=35
Hello,
I read that the USB to charge the ATP is a USB3.0.
On my desktop, I have such a plug. Do you think that it will charge at standard ASUS rate?
My USB 3.0 is on an quick-pci + molex connector, so it is powered by the desktop power-supply, so it should deliver the proper 15v, shouldn't it?
has anyone tried?
I routinely charge my Prime from my HP laptop's USB port. It takes a bit longer then the wall plug, but I do it at night when I am asleep, so it isn't a problem.
Bear in mind that your standard USB port delivers a limited amount of current. You can overdraw the usb port power supply and burn it out. I did this on an older dell POS c-series laptop by attaching 3 usb powered external hdd's simultaneously. Zorch, no more power to USB ports. That was a drag, luckily it was a company supplied POS laptop so the help desk sent me another. Rember that theTP is going to be trying to draw three times the charging current at 5 volts that it does at 15. Unless Asus made it smart enough to realize that its connected to a computer rather than its wall wart. I don't know. But I'm leary of USB charging.

So you can only trickle charge without ASUS charger?

Just looking to confirm what I think I've deduced from the forum.
I can't charge my transformer when it's on or asleep with a standard USB charger, correct? I've invested in 2 different 2.0+ Amp 5V USB supplies and none seem to get the charge going on the Transformer. It sounds like I could turn OFF the unit and trickle charge it (by the way would the 2.0A charger be of any benefit in this circumstance?). It also sounds like the ASUS charger gives off 12V and that's what the Tranformer is expecting to get the charge going, right? If so, I'm definately dissappointed that ASUS went this approach- non-standard. I always like extra chargers for traveling and throughout the house and this has limited me. Anyway, if someone would be so kind as to reply to this and confirm I've read the threads correctly, I'd appreciate it.
The ASUS charger is 15V.
5V isnt nearly enough. If you got it powered OFF, you might be able to get it to full (from empty) in a few days (yes, days).
The TF can be charged normally with 10-15V.
I suggest you read this thread to get some other ideas.
Yea you need a 2 plus amp carger which also is 15 plus volts, and if you want to make your stock charge cable longer you have to use a male+female 3.0 usb cable... a 2.0 usb cant transfer enough power quick enouqh

So much misinformation in this post...
First... The real wall charger is 15v 1.2A. So the 2 amp is just bs...
Second... A usb 2.0 cable transfer power just as "quick" (wut?) as a usb 3.0.
The reason you need a 3.0 cable is because the charger is looking for connection on a pin only present on a usb 3.0 cable. If you dont use a usb 3.0 cable the wall charger will only send 5V.
This is done this way so you can use the wall charger for other devices apart from the TF.
You can open the charger up and bridge 2 connections to make it send 15v all the time. Then you can use a usb 2.0 cable just fine.
Please, try not to spread false information.

Ahhh i see i read on the android forums that it was because the usb 2 didnt "move enough energy" i didnt realize it was because of a pin in the actual wall charger thanks for clearing that up

I appreciate your knowledge- but please, try not to be a condescending jerk. They obviously didn't KNOW the information was false.

Before you correct people how about you do your research first.
Actually if you read the wall plug it is a 15v 2-1.2A. You can DIY a charger as long as it can produce 11v+ at 1.2A-2A and will trigger the charge functions within the tab. USB 3.0 is only required with the stock charger.
Dynex sold "The Ultimate Charger DX-UA" that had a MAX setting of 11v but when tested actually produced 11.7v at 1.7A. I was able to find one but they are rare now bc they haven't been making them for over a year now. It comes with aton of adapters one being a USB. I use it often without issue.
Also they sell on Ebay USB car charger adapters rated at 12v at 2.0A I own one of these also and it works great with the stock cable.

+1, I've been using the same charger for about a year myself. Also without any issues whatsover.
You can still find them on eBay occasionally.

Actually I think youre the one who should read the text on the wall plug.
It clearly says "15v - 1.2A". the 2A is for 5v. Not 15. 5.

If they don't KNOW whether the information they are posting is true or false, then they shouldn't be posting it at all. That's just common sense.

Car (12v USB) charger

Has anyone successfully used a 12v usb charger other than the BN ripoff? I have a gmax 2.1a and aluratek 2a and neither one will charge the bn tablet. I get the "not charging" message on the tablet.. so I supposed its getting some juice, but not enough to sustain it. I soldered d+/d- together on both adapters and now both will show ac charging in the nexus - so I know each is getting close to 1amp. Ironically, the tablet will show ac charging if I use the nexus power ac power cube which is rated at 5v / 1amp output. So you would think the 12v usb adapters which are rated the same would work as well.
thoughts?

There's also the part of the equation where the USB adapter must supply a lot more than the 500mA of current that most adapters and computer USB ports are limited to. Mine will say "charging" as long as the adapter puts out around 1A (1000mA) or more and I use the NT's supplied cable. <-- But it still won't charge as quickly as it does when I use a 2A charger such as the one it came with. The factory charger is around 2A and expecting the NT to charge with anything less may not result how you'd like. Just because your phone likes a charger doesn't mean your NT will.
There is more to it than just shorting the D+ and D- pins. If the charger was designed for iPad, then you will also need to remove 4 resistors. Check out the two links in my post relating this issue at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614091
I modded a car charger by just shorting the two pins. My HTC EVO 4G phone showed AC charging but my NT showed USB charging. I opened it up again and removed the resistors network and NT showed AC charging right away. Good luck.
bigdogz - good advice - made an attempt at it but my eyesight and hand steadiness aint what it used to be However, I did find one that works - Scosche reviveII - GUSBC3. Its a 2.1a port for the galaxy tab and a 1amp port for apple. It charges both the galaxy tab 10.1 and the nook tablet on the 2.1a port. It also will charge in ac mode a galaxy nexus from the tab port. The 1a port does not have the d pins shorted, but will charge an iphone.

car charger

I have android auto which needs a USB connection via the car. It doesn't charge well. I also have a cigarette lighter. I was thinking of a wireless charging pad via the cigarette lighter to charge whilst I'm using android auto. Any ideas on best charging solution for s20 ultra. I have seen 45 w cigarette adaptors.
You need usb y cable like this:
https://a.aliexpress.com/_dYdtQn2
You have to put primary cable end to the Android Auto port, and the additional end to lighter charger or second car port.
Warning: quick charging protocols will not work so if You need lighter charger - buy simple one with 2A 5v or more. But anything above 5v will not work.
