why does this keep happening?? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

guys I have tried so so many ICS roms OFFICIAL and UNOFFICIAL. and still this problem persists.
the screen will lock up and display a bunch of lines and either purple, green, blue, or red. in this state the phone is totally unresponsive and requires a long press of the power button or battery to be pulled.
the only ROMS it does not do it with is GB ROMS. any ICS ROM will cause this to happen and I really would love an answer?
sometimes it will happen after a few hours. sometime it will happen 3 times in a matter of minutes.
I have F/R before every rom install and also wiped th CACHE AND DALVIK everytime.
attached is a photo.
I am currently on CM9 latest nightlys
( I know it is not rock solid ROM but so far it has been the least frequent with this issue).

honestly i dont think its that. it NEVER does it on ANY GB ROM. its flawless on the GB roms. its only when i flash a ICS ROM it does this...

Even looks like hardware issue...Have you tried Hydrog3N which is based on ICS 4.0.4....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1530179

Really strange
Šešios žąsys su šešiais žąsiukais. xDd! GT-I9100.

The point is that you can't really tell if it's no problem on gingerbread, because it happens in random intervals. Maybe on gingerbread you were just lucky.
Anyway, this is not normal.
Before your phone really dies, I'd install a stock gingerbread rom on it and update to Ice Cream Sandwich through kies.
If it happens on an original Samsung ROM, return it.
You don't want such a problem after you've lost warranty.
Maybe it'll become even worse in future, so better get a replacement.

Logic says that a bad flash .
possible a full wipe of the phone would solve the problem and i mean full format .

so how do i do a FULL format??

well, if your goin from a GB stock firmware, on your rooted phone download titanium backup, and backup all apps. The download mybackup, and backup all your contacts and the like (NOT system settings if you are goin from GB to ICS) and then reboot to recovery. flash the rom and gapps, wipe dalvik, cache AND YOU MUST restore to factory defaults/format or whatever. that is almost alwasy a must!
Then retore contacts/apps with titanium AND mybackup
This should work, unless of course it is a hardware problem, then i reckon you should invest in a $2 dollar usb jig, reboot to dl mode, and plug in ya jig. Thatl reset the custom counter, undo your root and pretty much give you back your warranty.
Hope this helps
Tangent5
EDIT: This always works for me, the main issue is just reinstalling the apps with the free titanium backup, and MAKE SURE each restore (for both mybackup and titanium) is NOT restoring data when going from GB to ICS or vice versa.

try with these wipes/format :
1) wipe data factory reset
2) Wipe Cache
3) Wipe dalvik
3) Mounts and storage / format system
then install the Rom zip file

Format cache, data, system, & sd card in CWRecovery. Then flash whatever rom you want with Odin. Pretty sure that's what JJE was referring to.

HOW TO: Install DL30 (aka Froyo)

Since there have been enormous amounts of questions of how to this, how do I do that. I am laying out the steps, in order, the way I did it. It works perfectly, and was very short. You can do this from ANY version of your phone, even an Alpha/Vanilla version of Froyo, this includes 2.1 Eclair.
THIS VERSION IS NONVOODOO, disable if you are using it.
THIS VERSION IS 100% ODIN FREE.
**I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT YOU DO TO YOUR PHONE**

PUT BOTH OF THESE FILES ON YOUR SD CARD. In any folder you like, or just the SD card main folder, as long as you know where it is.
Steps
1) Flash OLD ClockWork Mod Recovery to your phone. Do this by going to the Market and downloading ROM Manager. Once installed, click "Flash ClockWork Recovery" and choose the Fascinate.
1A) This is an ALTERNATIVE to step 1, a VERY good one. If you aren't able to get into Clockwork Recovery then do this. "Rooting Regardless of OS". Do that first and then come back here and proceed with Step 2. ---------------- Thanks ditobot
2) Once finished, choose Reboot Into Recovery. If it doesn't boot into recovery, then "Apply sdcard:update.zip".
3) Next, go back to the main menu and choose "Wipe Data/Factory Reset", do this twice for good measure. Then choose "Wipe Cache Partition", do it twice for good measure, it doesn't hurt anything.
4) Once in Recovery, choose "Install zip from sdcard" > "Choose zip from sdcard" > Then locate your "DL30.zip" file that you downloaded earlier. Choose it and then hit YES. Once complete, takes less than a couple minutes usually.
5) FINALLY, choose "Install zip from sdcard" > "Choose zip from sdcard" > Then locate your "new_cwm.zip" file you downloaded earlier. Choose it and hit YES. YOU ARE DONE!!!!
Reboot the phone and enjoy your rooted, bloated, official copy of Verizon Froyo.
For the record, this update ONLY works with DJ05 and DL09 radio. Meaning you must download and flash it to your phone if you do not have it or you won't get texts and probably won't be able to make calls.
Don't hesitate to ask questions.
Many questions are being asked and I will do my best to answer them, but you may find some of your answers in the Leaked thread started by punk.kaos himself. You can find this here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=937237

Did you wipe EVERYTHING? That usually is what causes what you're saying, by not wiping everything.
Syn, what's the difference between the *old* Green CWM and the *new* Green CWM? If you've got the old green cwm, can't you just reboot into recovery, wipe wipe wipe, and then flash the DL30 leak?
I previously had blackhole 3.0 DI09 on it. I jumped when i saw froyo was released so I restored it to a previous ROM (touchwiz rooted and cwm) i put it on my sd card (DI30) went into cwm recovery and did then searched for the the DI30 then applied it. it rebooted then it seemed to be working fine the google account and all the setup menus appeared but when i did it all then closed the menus, Force close tw.launcher came up?

Yes you boot into old CWM then you install NEW CWM from there then wipe and install.
New CWM works with the new kernel .32 as the old one didn't. Blame Verizon. Thank punkkaos and jt.

Yeah it asks to do a Firmware update. Do it. I did and then it reboots and won't ever ask again. Just a small thing I guess.
Wiping is just a safety thing to do so your chances of stuff getting messed up is really low. It may not be necessary in this package, as you have done it without problems. Good job on finding that out.

Flashed Virtuous Prime- Bootlooping CWM - FIXED!!! Reaction GIF's Inside

Exactly what the title says. I've tried restoring a back-up, but I can't get the ROM to boot up. It just keeps bringing me back to the CWM screen.
Is there any way I can turn the device off from here just to save the battery while I receive some assistance?
edit: My Prime is now fixed thanks to the excellent support of XDA.
At first, when my prime booted into CWM I was like,
{

}
Then after it kept bootlooping into CWM things felt worse.
After I got everything fixed up. This is what I felt like. (Only due to the excellent help though!)
Thanks guys!
Yes press and hold power and volume down until it vibrates. Release and it will shut down. Then just restart in recovery and wipe all and reflash rom.
It's still boot-looping back into CWM. It's version v5.8.2.0 if that helps. I'm hitting reboot system now with the power button, holding that and the volume down until I feel the vibration. I release, and a few seconds later it boots up again.

Read the following thread it should help but you need some adb knowledge
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514088
When you did a factory reset you erased the rom. You will have to reflash the virtious prime.
You wont need to unbrick. You are still able to get to recovery.
What will happen if my Prime dies though? Will I be able to charge it back up again? I'm not sure I'll have enough time to set up ADB before the battery passes.

I wiped data, cache, in dalvik in CWM. Then I formatted system, and tried re-installing Virtuous. It's still rebooting to CWM.
Well it sounds like you may have to follow the guide then. But it should charge in recovery and while it is off.
But it sounds like you got a corrupted file and I would suggest a new dl.

Unfortunately no "Shut Down" option. It was the first thing I looked for as I think it's included in other recoveries.
Can anybody else confirm that the device will charge while in CWM?

It sounds like you got a common bug with the CWM recovery; that bootloop into recovery. This can be fixed if you have ADP setup. See the how-to thread "Unbricking your Prime"; the first solution should get you back up. Then after that, I'd strongly urge you to consider TWRP. Though CWM is decent, and has got us by for a long time in the Android rooting community, you won't have problems like this with TWRP.

Can't install Rom only have CWM left

Hi Xda,
I decided to revert back to stock, got a MD5 checksum error on my nandroid backup (which was in the phone storage). Decided to use one of the custom ROMs which were available on my external SD or even a nandroid backup of my current system but to my surprise CWM won't recognize my external SD anymore and I already wiped cache, system data, and all that stuff clean so I have no OS anymore. Note that until very recently CWM could see my external SD and if I plug it in another phone it works fine so that eliminates the possibility of it being corrupted. I also tried to plugin my usb cable and tried to mount it but got an error. I had another nandroid backup on the phone which worked 5 minutes prior but I deleted it which was obviously a stupid move.
tl;dr: Wiped my phone clean, only have CWM left. Through CWM I Couldn't mount usb, external SD doesn't work anymore, and nandroid backup on the phone storage failed the checksum. What should I do?
if your phone is working download rom manager and flash recovery thru the app...first find the new rom you want and gapps...then flash thru rom manger recovery....then when your done..make sure you make a backup this time....the roms now thru recovery only show sd card because when making backups its more secure..they don't get erased ...
Thanks for your reply but my phone is no longer working CWM is the only thing I have left
reflash cwm with Odin
Get the Odin version HERE
Load it in the pda slot of Odin, out phone in download mode, connect to pc, and let her rip
That version will see the external sd, the new one from Rom manager will not..
Or, get into cwm, mount your USB storage, copy ROM to phone, flash, sigh in relief, feed the zombie...

^^ op says he tried that and "got an error"
But yes, feed the zombie, I'm starving!
Just because you wiped everything doesn't mean you only have cwm left. You just have a fresh install of whatever Rom you were running when you did all the wipes. You can reboot into the Rom and move backups around or flash the latest cwm of you're on an old one.
Have you tried just rebooting and moving whatever junk to internal or whatever you need?

I'm guessing he hit the wipe data/factory reset option in cwm. Which wipes data and factory resets and leaves you with a fully functional Rom. He never said he formatted /system but maybe reading comprehension isn't your thing. Thanks for being an ass though.

I'm thinking he only thinks he has no os, he has not mentioned ever trying to reboot. Seeing as he's being noobish (no offense), I'm guessing he's following the standard procedures of pretty much every tutorial and ROM OP, and simply wiping data/factory reset and clearing caches. Thus he should have a nice clean os. I could be completely wrong and he formatted everything, but I doubt that is the case.
I realize assuming can be bad, but I'm just trying to help him in the absolute simplest way possible which seems quite reasonable.

Saw this looking for roms for wife's new Note and thought I'd chime in. Since you have cwm, try booting your phone into recovery, and push a new rom to your sd card with adb and flash that.
What you'll do is boot your phone into recovery, connect to your computer and then from a cmd prompt :
1) adb devices
(you should see your device I'd here)
2) adb push somerom.zip /sdcard/somerom.zip
(see transfer here....)
Obviously you'll need to be in the directory on your computer that contains your rom and have your path variable set so you can run adb from anywhere. Then reboot your phone back into recovery, flash, be happy. Hope that helps!

Any kernel compatible with cm9. You can simply extract the .zip from the rom and flash the boot.img via fastboot (available in Hasoon's tool).
If you still have issues we will need more info about your sytem: s-on? Already on ICS? Which carrier? SuperCID? and anything else you think about.

I'm no expert at flashing, but on simple things I know what I am doing. Everything was fine and I wanted to flash Sport stars CM10 ROM. I did a backup on 4ext like I always do and then wipe flash reboot.
The issue here now is that once i flashed cm10 my phone got stuck on the HTC screen. Did my research found out sports ROM that he uploaded wasn't booting up. I instantly went back to 4ext. Wiped data and cache and restored my fourth bar nexus ROM.
Apparently it said the backup was successful yet when ever I boot it stays stuck at the HTC screen. This happened last night and I just can't seem to figure out shaft to do. I wiped, restored still nothing. Wiped download a different ROM. Still nothing.
S-on, T-Mobile
Edit: Also should be noted on last screenshot I never saw this splash screen before in 4ext. Happens the second I boot up in recovery. And in the small rectangle says something about 4ext not being configured due to an app or something.
I think I should be okay if I just flash clockwork and restore, but I'm not entirely sure.

Flash the kernel for fourth bar manually.
Or reflash fourth bar, then do an advanced restore and restore your data only.

Already in the process of re-downloading Fourth Bar and I will try that method out.
Any idea on why this happened though? I'm still curious.

Did exactly what you said man and still nothing. Still stuck at the HTC screen. Wiped everything flashed a new fresh downloaded ROM, backed up just the data and still nothing. I'm getting worried here.

If all else fails, reload a stock ruu via hboot, that'll wipe everything and restore your device to stock, once it boot's, throw on a custom recovery and go through the usuals to get your custom rom.

Did you manually reflash the kernel like I told you to?

How'd I go about doing that? Never had to manually flash a kernel before.
Edit: Researched, flashed Fourth Bar, flashed an ICS kernel. Rebooted Reflashed the kernel. Rebooted, still nothing.

Flash the kernel in the zip file, which is the rom itself.
If that doesn't help, restore to stock via a ruu then attempt again, remembering to flash the kernel manually, in most cases 4EXT will flash the kernel when you reboot from recovery, it will tell you it has a task to complete, the phone should auto reboot on it's not, no this is not a bootloop, just let it be and it should be fine.

I don't know what happened, but my phone is now working. All I did was wipe, restore (didn't flash a kernel or anything fancy just restored) and the phone booted, shutdown and then rebooted and finally started working. Thank you for helping me.

Just for future reference, anytime anyone has a bootloop issue that they can't fix in 20 minutes or less.. they should just flash the stock RUU. You can flash the RUU, flash a recovery, and restore a rom in a little over 30 minutes, and then you know that ANY quirk you may have had will have been written over.
Since you had an issue like yours, where you did nothing and it started booting, I am thinking you may have something wrong with your partition scheme.. if you have future issues reflash the RUU as it redoes the actual partitions and everything on them.

frozen wet nerf brick?

Hello all.
I'm coming from a droid charge. I had it rooted mostly for the adfree and titanium backup. I have rooted various friends phones and I am familiar with the process of sorts. My issue is similar to what has been posted previously but with a twist.
I used CASUAL to root/unlock. That went without a hitch but I think I went too far. Once I was at the TWRP screen and was looking at the buttons for wiping I went ahead and wiped everything, one at a time. Now I am stuck at the note II screen. I can get into download mode. The Note II screen just sits there staring at me. I'm not in a loop at all.
Did I completely wipe everything off my phone? LOL. I'm downloading multiple restore/roms as I type this.
I don't think I would call this a bricked phone other than saying I squishy bricked it, kinda like a nerf brick. that I put in the freezer. it still hurts but it'll be ok I'm sure.
Anyway. Before I go further I would like some advice as how to proceed.
I'm not looping at the Note II screen, it just stays there. Thus why I think I wiped everything off of it.
Thanks in advance, and yes you can call me a blockhead if you feel the desire.
Gonk
When you wiped, it wiped system and this is why it doesn't boot. Always make a backup first.
You have 2 options:
1. Download and factory restore with ODIN. Look at the stickies. There are restores that do not relock the bootloader and do not wipe data.
2. Download a custom ROM and use ADB to push it to the SD card in TWRP. This requires a little more know how but can get you up and running a little quicker.
Good luck!
Thanks

You can also put a ROM on the external SD card and boot into TWRP and flash it.

Only problem here is my inability to boot into TWRP. I can get into ODIN download mode and that is it. I keep reading the warnings of using ODIN after using CASUAL. Now I'm a little worried.
These are the only 2 screens I can get to, besides the note II hang.

just making sure, are you using the VOL UP, power, and home button combo?

Nope I'm using the VOL DOWN, power and home.
I just did your suggestion and get the System software not authorized blah blah, go to the nearest VW store.
Rut row. Now what. Guess I should do more reading.
Used imnuts Alt restore file. It got me back into my phone, bless you imnuts.
My phone is back to 4.1.1. Now to get back to 4.1.2
How does one get back to stock 4.1.2? I tried imnuts stock image but it seems to just keep me at 4.1.1
If I have to flash the modem and GPS to be the same than so be it.
OK, I took the OTA. I'm back to 4.1.2. Sorry to be all panicking about my phone. I was worried I was going to brick this in a bad way.
Because of all this I am so very thankful to all involved. This took me some searching and a lot of reading.
Now I will retry CASUAL and not mess it up lick I did the first time.
glad you got it back, remember VOL UP = Recovery VOL DOWN = Download mode.
Yup yup.
Thanks Eris.
BTW, turn off your antivirus program when running CASUAL.
I'm good and very happy I finally got the dang thing rooted with SU installed. Now I can finally back up the whole thing and start freezing the bloat.
It's a good day
I tip my hat to all of you devs. Good job guys. :good:

You can't get back to 4.1.2 using Odin, you have to unlock and flash back to a 4.1.2 ROM or take the OTA.
Edit:
Damn I was late, I didn't even notice the second page. Woops.
