[Q] GPS issues with CM 7.2-RC1 - HTC Aria Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just changed from CM 7.1 to 7.2-RC1 on my Aria. I did a full wipe before installing 7.2.
In every other ROM I've ever tried, (stock, attn1's, Gene Poole's, CM7.1), the GPS gets a lock within maybe 15 seconds. Now it takes several minutes. Using the GPS Status app, it seems to find the satellites quickly enough, and I get 6 or more right away. But no lock.
Once I do get a lock, the accuracy is dismal (+/- 60 feet) where it was always much better.
I know I have read about files that can be copied in to fix this; but I can't find those posts after quite a bit of searching.
Would someone please point me to those instructions? Can I pull stuff off the CM71. .zip?
Edit: Whoops, I think this is what I'm after: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19106745&postcount=3688

Weird. I've tried all four of ladios' zips, and there doesn't seem to be much difference. Lock times and accuracy are still worse than 7.1
I know the /system/lib/hw/gps.liberty.so is being changed because the MD5 sums are different (and they match what I calculate on my PC). So I must be installing the .zips correctly.
Is there something else that changed about the GPS in 7.2?

I use the htc-stock zip and get an initial lock in 45 seconds, subsequent locks in 10 secs.
Sent from my Liberty using xda premium

I also use the HTC stock one and get a 5 sec lock. I'm using it with 7.2

Htc stock working great here as well.

FYI: take a look at this commit and this post, guys.

That is infinitely better, thanks!
The computed accuracy (uncertainty) is still worse than I've experienced in previous ROMs. But it wouldn't surprise me if it was "optimistic" in the past. Even dedicated handheld consumer GPS units don't get 3-foot accuracy after 15 seconds indoors, but that used to happen all the time on the Aria.

[Q] How to decrease time for GPS to lock?

Current config:
MIUI 1.9.16
ROM: ED05
Kernel: Glitch v12 HL (9/22/11)
Glitch 9/22/11 has been a HUGE improvement on my phone's speed, stability and smoothness. However, I'm still getting quite a lag time (3-5 min.) before the Fascinate connects to the satellites when using GPS for navigation.
I'm currently looking at Radio EC09.
Are there any recommendations or thoughts?
Do you leave your GPS on all the time? I've found my GPS takes a lot longer to lock if I was only turning it on When I need it. Now I leave it on all the time and most of the time it locks fairly quickly. Some people have better luck with E05, personally my GPS is better on EC09.
Yes. GPS is always left on. I am constantly using GPS to show specific locations as well as Latitude with family and friends.
My fascinate locks a bit quicker than my wife's with the exact same set up. And hers takes more time than mine to find Satellites. She has gone 10-15 min. without it ever finding a satellite lock.

Updated Radio
Decided to Odin EC09 radio.
First GPS lock was nearly instantainiously; however, following uses were not as quick. I'll test it out today and report my findings.
I have tried just about every GPS fix/tweak out there. It seems like everything works well once or twice. Maybe the placebo effect. After a day or two it is always back to the random lock times of seconds to minutes. I have had the best overall luck with the PWGB rom. 9 out of ten times it locks in under a minute which seems to be the best my phone will do.

thats because things get out of wack like the compass or need to be updated like agps data. if youve tried the GPS fixes out there like downloading the gps.conf file from powerwash/geewiz and deleting gps files in miui (not sure about others) then always check out the compass/agps if you arent getting a quick lock.
I usually use GPS status to check it and it downloads AGPS data. I've heard the compass can be a problem but I have seen my phone GPS lock in a few seconds with the compass reading WAY off and I have also seen it take several minutes when the compass is perfect. Seems to be no pattern on my phone.
I have been on EH09 since it came out. Now on PWGB latest version it has consistenly locked quickly since flashing.

aGPS patches

Would these patches work with our Fascinates?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1442032
There is a google specific patch that the developer claims should work with most phones on pretty much any ROM.
What do you guys think?
FYI this is what I posted in that forrum:
Holy GPS Batman! I flashed the google specific patch in cwm and now my phone locks into my position in like 2 seconds. Also, the accuracy is up to 3 meters, which I have never seen before in my phone, the best I have ever seen is 9.
So the patch has greatly improved the gps in my phone.
Samsung Galaxy S (note is not S II, it is the first generation galaxy S) on USA Verizon Network.
Thanks for the patches!
the google one works great and cuts my lock time in half when on a stock rom...on CM or MIUI it doesn't change anything but then again i haven't had a GPS issue with them in a long time.
So would this work on teamhacksung's ICS?
used the google patch on the powerwashed gingerbread. seems to be working well so far
I dont think it would make any difference on ICS. I have had faster locks on ICS than any other rom I've used. From a clean flash I got a cold lock in around 10 seconds and was down to 2 meters in under a minute...pretty fast IMHO

What ICS rom/kernel are you using? links please?

Just wanted to say that I just flashed this on my Fascinate running SC3 Milestone 2 with the 1/16/12 KGB kernel and my gps locked on to, in my kitchen, 9 birds within 10 seconds accurate to 7 ft! I can say unequivocally that this phone has never been able to do that!

I hit the button, but I can't thank you enough for finding this patch and posting it!!! It's completely fixed one of the most glaring functionality problems this phone has had since the day I got it! Now it only takes 2 seconds to lock on from inside my house! Before flashing this, it wasn't a matter of how long it would take to lock on, it was a matter of it never locking on.
Between this patch, the SC3 GB rom and kgb kernel all the gps functions now work as they should have to begin with, with no lockups and instant gps lock. Nice!
Oh man I'm so glad, I had the same issue. Darn phone would never lock into my position.

Try the google ALTERNATE patch. That one worked even better for me.
Same thing with the alternate patch. No locks. Wiped davlik and cache. Shut GPS off and turn it back on. Nothing. I think I have bad hardware. This issue is the only one I've consistently dealt with. Might be time for a new phone.

Perhaps your phone hardware is worst than average. Our phone have poor receiver sensitivity comparing to other phones such as the Mototorola DroidX, -3dB to -6dB less in everything - Radio, GPS, Wifi... AND touch-screen phantom buttons sensitivity.
The underlaying problem is poor analog grounding causing degraded performance in multiple subsystems.
Proof - the analog ground suffered huge conductive common mode interferences whenever the USB cable get plugged into the computer, the obvious display symptom is touch screen sensitivity gone to hell from having been plugged in...
You can optimize GPS configuration all you want but if the phone can't get decent enough signals it simply will not work.
One thing you can try is finding a kernel supporting leakage compensation, tweaking leakage compensation will reduce the internal wide band noise ripples on analog ground and improve receiver sensitivity.
Wow this explanation left my head spinning!! lol.
So what rom/kernel do you recommend? I am on miui with glitch 13.1 and very happy at the moment.

get a new device..my fassy locks within seconds and is accurate to 5ft running the exact same setup.
Gotta try this, my gps is kinda spotty
Ok results!! Not good. First up is the google specific one, no satellites found.........nothing. No matter what I tried. Second the Google alternative one. This one found one satellite after about 5 minutes, another after 3 more minutes, then another 5 minutes and it went to zero and stayed there for about 15 minutes.
Well gotta find a stock gps.config file. At least it didn't brick my phone.
BTW I used the Root Explorer method i don't like flashing unknown stuff.

GPS - 9 satellites needed ti get position? Is that normal?

One of the main reasons why I bough a smart phone was in order to use the GPS. And while I'm quite happy with my Ace, GPS is so slow is almost useless.
I already a long research about it, and tried some of the fixes available, like this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1284506, and indeed, the speed to detect satellites has improved.
I'm using this app: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest&hl=es, to check what is the gps status, and it has been very useful.
Apparently, the problem is not the phone having problem to see the satellites, it could see and use 4 relatively fast, instead the seems to be that it need to use at least 9 satellites to get the actual position. Is that normal? Reading about gps, it says it only need 3 or 4, for some reason, even with 8, my ace could not calculate the coordinates. So it could take sometimes more than 20 minutes to know where I am.
Usually, the satellites receptions goes between 20 and 40, which is not much, but I'm not sure that is the cause of the problem.
So if any know how it supposed to work, I will be thankful for any info. Also, if your phone is quick to tell you the position once you enable, I will really appretiate if you can make a quick test with the above app (or another), to let me know how many satellites are needed to know the coordinates, and that is the signal range you are getting, so I can compare and see where my phone is failing.
And of course, if you have any suggestion, they are welcome.
take a look at this fix, just introduced a few days ago. It only works for CM7.x!, but for me it gives a very fast lock. It uses stock rom libs and a basic gps.conf file.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1465402
For me this gives a lock in about 5-10 sec. Really great! More satellites = more accuracy. You can get a lock with just one, but the lock is just worse.
remark: if you flash it you lose your old lib files and re flashing PFGPS tweak won't work, so make sure you make a system backup.

Thanks for the suggestion! Now for sure works different... I think it could see the satellite even faster than before, but while before it could use them almost as soon as it see them, now it take longer to start to use them, and use only 3 or 4, and the accuracy is not as good as before (between 150 and 200). Still I think is a improving, at least it give me roughly my position.
It will be really helpful for me if you could make a quick test with the application I mentioned above, I need to know how the gps usually works when working like yours, how many satellites can view, how many of them use, how much time it use.
If you can do that for me, I will be really grateful.

Official ICS; Still poor GPS performance

Same as UCLF5. Mine unable to lock indoors and take more than 5 min to lock while driving.
CWM Fix file from UCLF5 thread would work on this but seriously they should have tested it before release to public.
Mine works just fine, lock indoors in less than 10 seconds. Outdoors, same. Running stock 4.0.4 ATT I717. You must just have a bad chipset causing problems.
Also no problems on mine.

GPS is fine here..
I too have gps issues. It will not lock, best I get is 20m radius. This is not precise so navigation will not start either.
GPS works fine before and after the update.
Had the Samsung captivate, it had a bad gps
Had the Samsung Infused, it had an ok gps
Now on the Samsung Note, the GPS works perfect, locks within a sec or two.
I get locks indoors in 5 seconds or under.
My GPS improved over GB.

Some people have issues with gps lock and some don't.. I believe certain roms help because they add different tweaks .. or build props to "enhance" or tune. Other devices just have a better response time or better reception I guess everyone's phone is different as we see...

Being on Android for over a year, it's become very apparent that even with the same internals and install procedures, every phone is treated differently, and treats the user differently in turn. It's just something that's unforeseen and probably the main reason things are redone a lot by manufacturers or developers to account for every possible account that the software could change through normal use, by either power users, normal simple users, on all of the extremes.
Can't wait to see developers get at the new build and for source to finally drop.

slight issues for me only from initial use if not used for a day. A quick gps on / off toggle fixes it and it instantly locks.
I had issues with GPS lock on my last two roms. Now I am on stock UCLF6 and GPS locks in seconds.

I have the same gps issue as well. I will give it a day and see how it goes, but need be I am going to go back to GB wipe everything and try again. LF5 didn't work for me either, but the first leak was fine.

Reflashed it again, now even worse than before. Navigation is not working at all. I tried to turn on and off gps but it's still not working. I think I'll have it replaced but funny thing is that on gb and previous ics leaks, except on latest leak, it worked flawlessly.

My GPS...
...was fine on stock UCLA1 and is flaky as hell on stock UCLF6 after doing the Kies update. I used to get a solid lock indoors, now it randomly takes forever if I get a lock at all sometimes and is fine others. I'm trying to sort this (see what might be causing it). Gonna be lots of pissed people if their GPS gets borked by the update.
Edit: GPS Test app always shows 20+ satellites in view but satellites in use can inexplicably vary from 0 to apx. 14, even if left alone. Cold boot fixes it.
Has anyone tried using gps test and clearing / updating AGPS data in the settings? Also something that usually helps me.

Xperia Z2 gets GPS location extremely slowly

Has anyone else experience very slow GPS fixes if "Device only" mode is enable (for example because you don't want your data leaked to Google by enabling "High accuracy")? I thought this phone was supposed to support GLONASS, in addition to GPS.
I've always used GPS alone on my old Nexus One, and today I ran a test, with both devices freshly rebooted and in the same location. The N1 took 28 seconds to get a fix. The Xperia Z2 took 2 minutes and 16 seconds. This is with the latest firmware, .402. (With the previous one, FW:17.1.A.2.55, GPS worked a little faster, but still took about a minute or so, in plain outdoors with no trees or tall buildings around).
I'm having the same problem too using Strava. Can't get a fix at all

Based on my experience this is due to gps configuration file: fix that and signal get fixed much more fast and position gets more accurate... Before editing that file you need root and you should know what you are doing, because messing up with its content can bring longer time to fix and less accurate position. A better explanation is long and technical, so I kindly invite you to search more on this topic, if you're interested in
