Here's a quick question on the compatibility of Wifi Direct on Android devices regardless of the wifi chip and its certifications.
So, here goes my reasoning. Most Android devices nowadays are able to function as a wireless hotspot. In other words, they can send out packets over their own Wifi connection to other devices, and the other Android devices can thus use this connection to access the internet.
If we are able to make use of this capability, and enable the device to send local data on the device's memory over a hotspot connection, all devices capable of wireless hotspot function should be able to use wifi direct, regardless of whether they have the certification to do so.
Would such capabilities be able to be developed and integrated into custom roms?

I want to host an INFRASTRUCTURE (not AD-HOC), otherwise known as a SoftAP (Access point) on wifi. This is possible with many applications, but they all want to use a mobile data connection. Is there any application that allows you to host a SoftAP WITHOUT a 2G/3G/4G connection? This is just for playing over WIFI between a samsung galaxy s3 and an older android 2.1 tablet. These cannot see AdHoc networks.
Anyways, I'm interested in any application that allows hosting of an infrastructure WiFi network without tethering to just host a wireless lan point.
Bump
I am also very interested in a solution/app like this.
A photo app (MoPhotos) will work with my EyeFi WiFi card to transfer photos from the card in my camera to my computer/Android device via Wifi.
Currently, the card has to go through the home router as that what it looks for to give it a IP Address and network to connect to the computer/Android.
If there is a way for the Android device to be a Wifi HotSpot without the mobile tethering, I can configure the card to talk directly to the Android, which would be *very* helpful when out and about.
Is Wi-Fi Direct Software or Hardware feature. Is there any possible way to connect to a Wi-Fi Direct device from a device with only Wi-Fi support without using Superbeam or other apps that use Wifi hotspot feature.
In Wi-Fi Direct specification, it is written that "Only one of the Wi-Fi devices needs to be compliant with Wi-Fi Direct to establish a peer-to-peer connection that transfers data directly between each other with greatly reduced setup."
Thanks.

Wondering whether Android supports multihoming, in other words, using both a Wi-Fi and LTE connection at the same time?
It seems not, that if Wi-Fi is connected then LTE is disabled.
If my Wi-Fi cannot connect to the Internet for some reason, I would like to be able to continue connecting to resources
that are local to Wi-Fi (and not accessible via Internet) and also access Internet through LTE.

Specifically, why is it that some features which only like to work over Wi-Fi, such as screen mirroring from my phone to my PC, will not use the Wi-Fi hotspot connection from the same device? I noticed similar issues trying to set up a Chromecast without a router. I do not have home internet, only my phone. It seems to me that the programming for something like this should be incredibly easy. Have the hotspot treated as a Wi-Fi network with an API, so apps that specifically need to use a Wi-Fi connection can just use that. Why wouldn't this work?
Hello PRO-I users, greetings from Korea.
I've been planning to purchase a Pro-I device, and I wonder if this device has a Wi-Fi relay function, i.e. mobile hotspot with Wi-Fi signal.
The problem is this; in South Korea there are lots of carrier-based Wi-Fi spots that requires EAP-SIM or EAP-AKA authentication to connect, which makes devices without specific SIM almost impossible to connect to secure Wi-Fi connection. In select Samsung and LG(RIP) devices there is a function called Wi-Fi sharing, which establishes Hotspot connection from Wi-Fi signals(NOT from 2G, 3G, LTE or 5G) under the device's hotspot name.
Example) Samsung Galaxy Note9(N960N)
1) Connect carrier Wi-Fi(KT WIFI)
2) Set device SSID as NOTE9-WIFI
3) Turn on Wi-Fi sharing
4) Turn on Mobile Hotspot function
5) Use my PC to connect NOTE9-WIFI, and connect to the internet with KT WIFI signals
Since I use quite a lot of non-SIM devices on the go, the availability of this function would be quite crucial. I've been searching high and low and I couldn't find a single clue of this.
Owners of PRO-I device, I humbly ask you guys a favor to find if this is possible. Is it possible to turn on mobile hotspot function with Wi-Fi connection?
Hi.
Got mine yesterday ... answer is a negative, unfortunately, as soon as you turn on the wifi hotspot, you lose wifi and it switches to mobile data.
