Xperia S with Moto Lapdock - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hey everybody,
few months ago i purchased the Moto Atrix 4G which is an awesome device, the reason i bought it for is the lapdock and the HD media dock, i loved the concept of Webtop system, anyway after that i got bored of the 4" screen as my main phone is the note with 5.3" HD Screen so i went for the Moto Razr as the secondary phone, i had to do little mods to the sockets to make them fit the Razr due to the differences in the positions of the USB and HDMI cables, anyways it worked like charm, when i saw the Sony Xperia S, i loved the camera bcuz the highest res. cams i have are the Razr's 8MP and the Note's 8MP so before purchasing the SXS i checked on the TV Launcher option and i loved it, then i checked on the physical connectors interfaces and noticed that the SXS has normal Micro HDMI and normal Micro USB with OTG, i knew i would be able to use the Moto Lapdock with my SXS, so i bought it as my 2ndry phone and its amazing, now while im enjoying my movies, web surfing, mailing, messaging on my SXS with lapdock i took some pictures to show to the community, the only problem im facing is the slowness of the mouse cursor as i googled alot and couldn't get it to go faster bcuz in the gingerbread models there isn't an option for cursor speed as in the HoneyComb, Here we go with the Pix...

Nice - does the dock have a second battery to charge the phone (And if so does it work)?
How much modding did you need to do to the dock?

Yes it has a battery that can charge the phone and last for 8 hours, but for the SXS when the lapdock lid is closed it charges the xperia, once the lid is opened it stops charging i guess this happens due to the USB OTG of the SXS, on the Razr & Atrix there is USB OTG but without power output unlike the SXS you can use most of the usb devices and they will be powered by the SXS it self, so if we could mod the USB OTG cable it would charge and work as usb host at the same time
sorry forgot ur second que. i did nothing but disassebling the socket which was by removing a couple of screws from the external socket housing which is separate from the rest of the lapdock housing, then i removed the two cables off the plastic holding them, if i could get micro HDMI female to male extension cable, and micro usb OTG extension cable it would be much better to freely move the SXS...

Can the Lapdock be bought on its own?

Yes...

i purchased the Atrix 4G and the Lapdock as a package, but it can be purchased separately from motorola, there is another model that has larger screen and built-in webcam, mine is Lapdock 100 the other model is Lapdock 500

Yeah, had a look.

Nice but not really worth the price tag for me.

Dude i bought both of the atrix and the lapdock fot 300$ as a package, and also bought the HD docking station with hdmi out,a charger, audio out and 3 usb ports for something like 60$ it was totally worthy then sold the atrix for the same price of the package and bought the razr as an upgrade, i couldnt hook up the galaxy note and galaxy tab to the lapdock bcuz of MHL issue so i bought the xperia s bcuz its the most suitable device for usage with lapdock ,i dont use any of my tablets anymore due to laptop like feeling with the great looking dock(slim as tge macbook air with matt metal housing) and could access all my files at the sametime in addition to the comfort of full keyboared, sorry for the long reply, i feel like i wrote a story

Yeah, will keep an eye for one at a better price. Laptop is nearly dead at this point and my Dropad just isnt reliable so it'd be nice to have something the odd time I need it.
Btw, no offence but that isnt a long post, not by a long stretch

Really interested in getting this for my XS
couple of questions, I watched a couple of videos on youtube, I see the cable attaches with the usb and hdmi right next to each other. So you separate these how exactly to make them work with the XS And when the XS is docked, how does the phone sit like can you use it on the go on the train etc? or is it too loose.
Does everything work fine, like the usb ports, microphone socket, speakers etc. with the Xperia S? Lastly you say the cursor can't be made faster in gingerbread, will the option be available in ICS?
thanks for the help, going see how cheap I can find it
Edit:

many thanks hunix!
i've just bought one purely based on your post!
I'll see how it goes in a couple of days!

How much moding is involved to get it to work with the Xperia S? Once you've modified it is it possible to revert if back to how it was, i.e. how much do you break?

Yes, same, would love to see how this works in action

TV out cable?

Does anyone know if a TV out cacle is available or even possible on the micro usb connection of the Slide? I am about to go on vacation and need to keep the kids entertained without dragging a DVD player along with us. I am curious if HTC gas the same setup as far as pin count on this one as thet did on their micro plug. Any input on the subject is apreciated.
here's the best I can find. I didn't spend a huge amount of time so I may have missed one that may work better but here is a micro usb to mini usb adapter and then I know there are TONS of mini usb tv out cables out there so this setup may work for you. I did not see any micro usb tv out cables anywhere which I found odd. anyway, here's the link to the adapter I found, you may find something even cheaper:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...7&cs=04&c=us&l=en&dgc=SS&cid=27722&lid=628335
Thanks for the info. The only thing I worry about is HTC mini usb jacks have a lot more pins than standard mini usb jacks. It was a great idea in its day, though I am sure there are better ones now. Any adapter would have to be the HTC. Style output, and I don't even know if there is an "HTC" micro usb output.
As far as I understand, the extra pins on the HTC mini-usb plug were:
1x Ground
2x R/L sound Out
1x Mic In
These just carried an analog signal.
Since HTC is now defaulting a 3.5mm jack on almost all phones, these type mini-usb plugs are becoming obsolete.
The regular Data +/- and +/-5v pins never changed, which is what carried the digital signal for video/sound out.

Try looking for the cable designed for the Droid Incredible, I believe I saw that for one of my customers at T-Mobile by looking on Google.
yeah the droid incredible cable will work
Thanks, I will have to order one. Hope I get it in time. Much apreciated.
The question that hasn't been answered yet is "is the slide capable of tv-out?"
Good question. I haven't seen this feature advertised at all for this phone, including on T-Mobile internal documentation, so I very much doubt that it is capable of TV out. That would be awesome to find out it is, though!
I'm sure with a bit of tinkering, it would, but with the resolution and low GPU speeds, would it be worth it?

ive read that the slide has a basic usb connector 4 or 5 pin

[Q] Lapdock Just an HDMI Monitor? With Other Uses?

Since the lapdock has an HDMI in (for the atrix to output to the screen), would it be possible to hook up and output an xbox 360 with the correct adapters (like this)? Or is the HDMI plug just for use with the atrix?
Dude
F**king brilliant man I was at the att store the other day and when I yanked the atrix out of the lapdock(one of which I have ordered) it said NO HDMI INPUT. I bet it will work with a micro HDMI adapter....ordering from China asap, so expect it to be a month :S

If it warned against hdmi input, it actually might not work . It might be a sort of proprietary jack in order to trigger the webtop on the phone. Even though we can just enable webtop with an hmdi cable, it might not work the other way around. But it's worth a shot seeing as the adapters shouldn't be too much money.
it didnt seem that way, if I can dummy load the usb connector possibly by using my atrix, then the hdmi is free for the taking, and when i pulled it out of the dock it seemed like, when you unplug a computer monitor, when it says nothing connected, it seemed like that, I bet this will work

still not right. The dock has a male mini connector, to make it work you need a full sized male to mini female cable. They don't make those, so you'll have to make one yourself.
Or you could use the full size male to mini male adapter along with a female mini to female mini coupler or "extender".

Last week I was working with my exporter and I noticed a boatload of new micro hdmi products, one of them was male and female adaptors, male to male, female to female etc, I guarantee it you guys they exist, and they also exist for micro usb, with which we can dummy load the shell into powering on with the phone if necessary. This will take maybe $6 worth of chinese parts, a month for shipping, and patience for the adaptors to arrive for an investigation. I'll try to order by next tuesday

I look forward to hearing more about this.
If it would indeed be possible to use the laptop dock for such a purpose then I might be able to justify picking one up.
...it would then make a nifty portable DVD player too...
just get an inverter to run a blu-ray player in your car, make a $50 cable...
You guys have wayyyyyy too much time on your hands
(from a guy who doesn't own a gaming console )
However, as a proof-of-concept, it would show what the lapdock is capable of. Get a ATSC tuner with HDMI out and you would have a nice portable HDTV.
I am actually wondering if there is a way to put a touchscreen in place of the simple LCD (like Asus is doing with their prototype)
Pretty sure that the screen is going to shut off without the phone activating the display through the USB connection as well.
Good luck though, hope I'm wrong!

Which is why I will dummy load the microusb terminal in the dock with my atrix. I found the female micro hdmi part we are looking for! I'll put up more info ASAP, I'm a bit swamped ATM
It might attempt to sense an atrix via the microusb port. Perhaps a keep alive signal. But it will use the same proprietary protocols that all the docks use to trigger the correct mode.
Sent from my Motorola Atrix 4G on the network with the most backhaul, whatever that is. This post might have errors as I hate touchscreen keyboards.
Nice to see I'm not the only one that saw the no input message and thought to myself, HEY I CAN PLUG SOMETHING ELSE IN! Anyways, anybody get this working yet? I found an adapter on Ebay that should do the trick... But I guess I'm not allowed to post that yet... Take a look though, they do exist if you do not mind waiting for it to ship from China.
I think this just might work!! Sometimes when I plug in the phone I get a message on the screen "no hdmi input". And if this does in fact work, guess what. The atrix 2 will work with our "outdated" lapdocks haha

RAZR Dock Differences?

Hello!
I'm planning to but original dock for my RAZR, and I see that there are two versions of it. What are differences between them?
http://www.motorolastore.eu/pl/p_motorola_product.aspx?i=225118
http://www.motorolastore.eu/pl/p_motorola_product.aspx?i=225121
It bugging me, since they are looking the same but the second one is much more expensive. And description is the same.
Cheaper one has only one USB port for charging, another is equipped with hub and three USB ports. HDMI micro socket is in both models.
Ed. Ale bardziej opłaca się złożyć samemu =]
Also, The more expensive dock has a standalone Firefox web browser. I purchased the more expensive one and use a usb mouse and a bluetooth keyboard and it's like having a full PC on your TV through the HDMI cable. You could probably do the same thing with the less expensive dock if you have a Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard combo but I am pretty sure you can only go into mirror on display mode vs the full webtop application. Either way, I think it would be a worthwhile purchase in my opinion. I enjoy using it.
Additionally I was told that the less expensive model does not include the mini HDMI cable. Not sure if that would influence your decision or not.
I'm just wondering. And I don't mean to jack the mans thread, but has a powered USB hub ever been successfully patched into the dock interface? If its easy enough I might try modding mine.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Forum Runner
So, basically in more expensive model you can access Webtop, while in cheaper one, you can't, right? Or am I wrong and it's only USB ports and browser difference?
Also, lack of HDMI cable is no problem. I can get one easily xD
The one I have has no USB ports. It only has HDMI, Audio and a micro USB charging port. I'm just wondering if a USB splitter can be added some way?
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Forum Runner
@UrbanDroid
But can you acces Webtop App like on more expensive one? If it doesn't have Webtop app then it's not worth to buy it.
Also I have questions for other. Is it possible to attach normal USB hub to it and make it work like expensive dock? I mean, connect normal HUB with three normal USB slots and one microUSB for charging. Is it even possible without tearing dock apart? I know it's less stylish then buying expensive one, but unfortunatelly I can't afford it xD Life is brutal and stuff.
Webtop is in your phone, not the dock. The docks play some tricks with USB pins so the phone knows which dock it's in and which mode to activate.
People have used USB hubs to add devices to the RAZR, with or without a dock. The only caveat is that the hub must have its own power supply and you may have to make a cable to have it work. Google around for it.
The ICS leak (.211/OTA?, at least) will enable webtop without using a dock at all. Just plug in an HDMI cable and you're good.
Confirming. I've got the simple dock for free with the costco verizon deal recently. No mHDMI cable included. However the web top works the same through the dock as with the cable only (upgraded to ICS right away, so can't tell for GB, but who cares now, as JB is coming? ). Tinkering with the idea of installing a USB hub board inside the dock. Looks straight forward, just need to measure the inside compartment to get a proper hub for parts.

Hi,
do you know any deals available to France ?
I'm really considering switching my HP touchpad and Galaxy Nexus for a Lapdock and upgrade the Nexus for a better phone with the proper outputs... Do you think it's worth it ?

I bought the Motorola Atrix Lapdock since I couldn't find any sub $100 portable HDMI displays. The only affordable displays I could find were USB only. With the Atrix Lapdock and some adapters, I was able to use it as a portable display for several devices, which is great for traveling.
It's a good idea to remove the plate on the docking area (underneath where the phone would be). It makes it easier to plug in the adapters or have to sand/shave them less. You can easily pull it off with your finger nails (the plate actually has a couple of magnets to keep it in place, and two small plastic clips).
........................................................................................................................................................
The Sony Xperia S works fine with the Lapdock, including the Keyboard, USB Ports (THE USB PORTS SUPPLY POWER FROM THE LAPDOCKS INTERNAL BATTERY SO YOU CAN DIRECTLY PLUG IN EXTRNAL HARD DRIVES, OR USB DEVICES THAT REQUIRE POWER WITHOUT THE NEED OF Y SPLITTERS AND WHAT NOT), and the touchpad works as well. Charging the phone does not work when the lid is open (Only works when the lid is closed).
Additionally, the two adapters that connect to the Lapdock had to be modified to fit. I had to shave off some excess plastic around the connector with a Dremel grinding bit.

atrix/bionic lapdock compatibility with Amaze 4G?

Anyone tried to fit the Amaze 4G on a lapdock? Can't find any posts via search
Those Lapdocks (eg Atrix Lapdock) go on sale for ~$50, basically a display, keyboard, battery and trackpad.
Below is someone's hack for raspberry pi on the lapdock.... since amaze 4G has HDMI out, only thing to do is to see if we can get the cables to fit properly, and the USB functionality(keyboard+trackpad) to work, and the software
http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/21/3105822/motorola-lapdock-hacked-raspberry-pi-rikomagic
So I did a bit of digging...
The Amaze uses a MHL connector (see wiki) which allows for access to HDMI and USB over one connector. The lapdocks seem to have two connectors to plug into the Motorola phones. It doesn't seem like a big issue to replace the cable from the lapdock with a MHL one that you could probably buy off ebay.
Double check which pin corresponds to which wires on the MHL and also on the USB and HDMI cable from the lapdock, cut the wires, re solder, heat shrink, close the lapdock back up....profit???
That's as far as I can tell regarding connecting the hardware the phone. I'm willing to bet that the HDMI will output directly to the screen fine without any software adjustment. But I'm unsure about the keyboard and trackpad.
Thoughts?
I'd be willing to give this a try if there's interest.

from looking at the raspberry pi and other stuff(laptop/wii connected to the hdmi port), you'll get a "mirrored" display... the keyboard/trackpad depends on the usb connection/driver/OTG Kernel, dunno about that
Youll need
Lapdock: $20-$60 (i'd suggest getting the atrix/bionic versions, not the motorola 500 one)

MHL connector for HDMI: $10-$35
Official http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Adaptor-Jetstream-Tablets-Package/dp/B005LSOPN4
Unofficial, may need USB cable for power http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10833&cs_id=1083314&p_id=8675&seq=1&format=2
->I can't get any clear indication that the USB data from phone passes through to the USB connector on the MHL adapter
maybe some HDMI cables/connector (HDMI male from MHL connector to miniHDMI female on the lapdock)
I have a tablet and a netbook too, so don't think I'll be attempting this for now
the 35Whr battery(from googling), people say it can charge your phone a couple of times over(your phone's battery is 4Volts*2AmpHr = 8Whr)
I'll see if I can find a cheap one here in Canada.
It's a rather interesting concept.
It kinda reminds me of this.http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/android
Definitely interested in this, would be cool to have this setup.
Live and Die on this day....
went to a radioshack nearby, they didn't have it..
bascially, i would only get one if its around $20 (since you can charge phone with it, $20 for a large battery is worth it, though not for the laptop form factor)
The only docks I can get my hands on are $50+ from ebay. This idea is such a niche product...I'm trying to think of a time where this could be useful.

commute on a train/bus, could watch video on a larger screen while charging your battery
if we had the software to support it as well (like the ubuntu-phone posted earlier or webtop options), could compose email or edit code on the go...

if you want to spend more than $200, a laptop
if you want just one device that has everything loaded, and customizable(via the lapdock), maybe a netbook or this lapdock
i guess that's why the Atrix Lapdocks are selling at a discount... the manufacturers couldn't find a good way to advertise this expensive device (MSRP is $300 or so)
it's available for $40 on bensoutlet

yes we do, via the ExtMicro / MHL port

I heard that the Amaze 4G is picky about which MHL cable it accepts, and the kernel/android build on it must support HDMI out
