Hi,
Just making a random thread, when I get a phone I always get a case because I'm afraid the drop proofibility(I know its not a word) is not up to scratch(pun unintended). However I'm waiting on sony's official white case. Just wondering, how drop resistant is the Xperia S. Not telling anyone to drop their Xperia S to find out.
Please share your experiences
I'll put it this way, I dropped it by accident and I've a big scuff and dent on the top right at the back of the phone.
I keep looking at it, with sadness.
I havnt dropped mine but if I did and it smashed it would not suprise me, feels very heavy/fragile!

Heavy? Really? IMO its a really light phone. Feels the same weight as my x10 but its way bigger. It surprised me when I opened the box and took it out.
Having dropped my x10 upwards of 4 times, never having a case I'm kinda confident in Sony's manufacturing. Thing is nicked slightly, few marks on the screen protector but if I replaced that you'd take a second to realise it wasnt new out of the box.
That said, I have a nilkin on the way and I'm going to be Uber cautious until it arrives.

Same I have a few scuffs and bruises on mine, I can see my £50 phone excess being used and it taking an irrepairable drop some time soon. My white case is on it's way.

Two days ago I dropped mine from about 1,5 meters onto asphalt (display down) causing only two tiny scratches on the screen! The phone still works as before. Incredible!

It really depends on how it drops. Though being a phone with sharp corners definitely has the downside of being less drop resistant, as seen that poor phone above that looks like it had it's skull cracked open
It's partly why a lot of phones you see have rounded corners, as they are more adept at distributing impact forces to the sides.
Too bad I'm in love with the rectangular design, so I'll have to be more careful!

No phone is drop resistant unless you have one of the old nokia phones. Those are wall resistant as well.
I thought they would make phones a little more drop resistant by now. On my old Samsung galaxy s, the gorilla glass does shatter, but I swear they could they could fix that by having very ever so small protruding edges to stop the glass contacting the ground, that way i don't need a case, that was with the old galaxy s but i guess this xperia s, the plastic and the glass are both vunerable

i dropped mine on the toilet floor in an airport and the top right hand corner got grazed and had a small hair line crack
...i ordered a case before this incident and the case came the day after the phone got damaged
oh well now im trying to get it replaced under warranty

So basically I managed to accidentally crack the outer screen on my X10 by accident.
The LCD underneath is still fine 100% but it's just a crack on the outer screen Sony puts on there.
Any ideas?

Have a look @ dealextreme they sell the outher shell of x10, black and white... for 35 dollars or something..
(I think that includes the "screen" you are talking about)
actually, the screen (not lcd, the glass that is on the LCD) does not come with the housing.. i think the glass on the lcd is called digitizer
Here: http://cgi.ebay.ca/OEM-New-Sony-Eri...Accessories&hash=item3361d80fe8#ht_2668wt_905

That's the one, the digitizer is what I'm gunna need. Sadly enough it's the more expensive part :/.

Open case, pull old screen off, clean sticky gunk off, put new screen on , close case
Even the most retarded kid could do it
Its not as easy as it sounds, you have to go through the back of the case, your gonna need a torqx 5/6 screwdriver minimum, i dropped mine due to a slight accident. short version, dont drink rum and try to flip your phone looking cool to check the time.
took about 25 minutes to get the phone stripped down fully to replace the screen (replaced the case too, but the screen repair alone requires the strip down)
now i have a nice white x10i

I think I am one of the few that has a High Gloss Candy Apple Red X10 lol. I busted the screen on mine about 2 weeks after getting phone. Instead of paying the 100$ fee through ATT Insurance to replace the phone, I spent 30$ on Amazon for a Pure White X10 Shell. A little bit of paint with an air gun and I was able to customize my own shell

didnt crack screen
I too thought I had cracked my screen cause I dropped it in a parking lot, I was rocking it naked in the rain, lucky for me the cheap rear cover came in handy as it poped off and the battery fell out of the phone the second it hit the ground so it survived with only a few scrapes and what I thought was a hairline crack that that ran down the top of the screen. so i lived with it till i recently got the inspire 4g and gave my girl my x10 but b4 i gave it to her i decided to rip off that old and scrapped factory screen protector and put on a shinny new one along with a few covers to hide my clumsiness and low and behold the screen was PERFECT not a scratch on it. The crack turned out to be nothing more than a very deep scrape in the screen protect that caused the screen to look cracked.
moral of the story is always check to make sure it is really cracked. those factory screen proctors are strong!!!(and a bit of a pain to remove.)

"That Gorilla Glass is pretty tough is something we are well aware of. Smartphone manufacturers know that too, which is why they use it to protect their devices' displays against every day wear and tear. This year, the latest evolution of this scratch-resistant material, called Gorilla Glass 2, made it into consumer devices offering the same great level of protection despite being 20% thinner.
Yet Gorilla Glass 2 is not indestructible, as a Samsung Galaxy S III owner found out just recently. And he found it out the hard way, unfortunately, after his smartphone fell out of his pocket face-down. The result is well visible at the photo to the right – a photo, which nerds that are weak at heart might find quite disturbing.
So, even if your smartphone has a scratch-resistant display, you still need to handle it with care. Otherwise, you might end up being in the shoes of this unlucky Galaxy S III owner, who now has to spend $350 on repair fees in order to get the broken display fixed."

Yes, I never used any screenguard or case on my S2, but I think I will have to on S3.. Atleast for first couple of months..
There's a difference between scratch resistant and shatter proof that people don't seem to get
Sent from my CM9 TouchPad
Its pure luck. Ive seem gorilla glass phone slammed down hard onto gravel with no damage, others are dropped lightly and they shatter, it just depends on how it lands really. I scratched my Dell Streak dropping it onto a wood floor!
Guys please, glass is still glass, even if it is made from Gorilla or something.
My S2 dropped many times with screen facing ground and nothing happened.. It's pure look i assume..
Yeah me to, my S2 has been dropped on a hard tiled floor, no marks at all.
it depends on how it dropped..just dropping face down wont break easily [forget gorilla even reguler phones wont break]..
my guess is Impact is on edge
Not cheap either, screen & digitizer are $259.00 on the bay.
You can notice the impact on the bottom right but I think it may have bounced somewhere and fell even further. Anyway I really doubt this was a normal drop at all, I've seen a Nokia lumia 900 using a gorilla corning glass being used as a hammer and tortured with a nail and I just don't believe this story.
The S2 has a tiny lip around the screen which absorbs shock into the casing, the S3 lacks this and the edges smooth outwards with the glass making any fall damage face front direct contact with the glass. Trading functionality for ergonomics.
LMFAO! Yes of course it is! I thought the word "GLASS" gave it away. It's not a shock absorbing plastic...

But I just found this somewhere and wanted to share, that's it..
The screen breaks quite bad. I don't think is a normal fall from waist level.

Not surprising at all. At the end of the day, its just glass, and all glass has a breaking point.
Depends how you really landed it at the end. Thats why you should always buy a cheap case and it'll be safe
Btw, Gorilla Glass 2 is the same as Gorilla Glass '1' in strength, just thinner.
What does this discovery tell us about? Be careful, it's not indestructible
Sad for the owner, he got it that early and breaks it immediately. It's like buying a supercar and bangs it through the next concrete after three curves...
resistant doesn't mean tank-proof. Strange it has broken only fallen from the pocket.

This was dropped out of my pocket as I was getting out of the car... so not even from above waist height!
if you go to ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung-Galaxy-S-III-Teardown/9391/2 you can see it mentions the fact that the screen is a fused unit, will be very hard to get an "unofficial" one.
Looks like a sammy only repair job
Pictures posted. can you view them? just got that photobucket account as I am away from home right now.
I have dropped my old SGS2 and SGS from higher than this and I got a light scratch... this has made me loose ALL faith in the build quality.
How come the front and back got damaged at the same time /?????????????????????
Yeah been looking into getting it fixed. Around 3-400$ for the screen then plus the camera housing... may as well buy new phone. Hence the appeal for bricked devices on here...
Saying that, I dropped mine also getting out of the car... It didn't even scratch, just dented the plastic on the side of the screen.
The worrying thing is, the screen is exactly flush with the bezel and so is not protected at all when it falls - you might have been unlucky on how it landed!

Maan... today it happened to me. Dropped out of my pocket when I got out of a cab. The screen is ok, just some tiny scratches at the top right (I can live with that), but the bezel looks like crap at the bottom left, that's probably where it hit the ground after the fall, then falling onto the screen where it got the scratches.
Does anyone know whether the bezel can be repaired or replaced? I guess I was lucky, but still... now I have a shiny new phone that's just a few days old... and it looks like... an idiot dropped it.
Just my Own story
I didn't have my SGS3 for 24 hours yet, and I have broken the screen. I use my phone as a alarm clock, the alarm rang in the morning after getting the phone waking me up, I hit the snooze button and went to put the phone back onto the bedside table, about 3-4 feet off the ground, I guess I slightly miss positioned in in my not so awake state, it fell to the ground, I hadn't thought too much about it as I had way worse falls with my SGS2 and never anything, but wen I picked my phone back up I could not believe that there was a big crack across the screen... I thought Gorilla glass 2 would of been much stronger. I'm very disappointed with the durability, I can live with it but every time I look at the unit it just reminds me of how easily that was broken, and it disappoints me all over again, I don't see a big reason to spend the ridiculous amount of money to replace the screen for the one crack across the screen, BUT it sure is a sore thumb.
Overall I'm extremely happy with my Samsung Galaxy SIII but VERY disappointed with the durability. I guess it is also my fault, I was so EXTREMELY satisfied and happy with my SGS2 that wen they released the S3 I just jumped on the occasion to get it and never waited for any reviews and customer testimonials as I would normally do wen considering buying anything, especially something at this price range. I will however learn from my mistake.
OK so far my g5 has been pretty decent...I do have some light bleed but not a lot...I do however have a decent bit of chin gap...I have a case on it which helps to sorta keep it flush but there's still enough of a hairline gap that I can stick like paper and like say a fingernail thru...so my question is what is the potential of issues with that gap? I'm concerned that like if I have the phone out say for a few moments in the rain or something that liquid can get in there...I already can see some dust build up (I work in a dusty type place) like I said the phones been pretty solid so I don't want to trade it in and maybe get a worse device...I was thinking of maybe getting a very thin piece of rubber or foam and putting it there to help kinda seal the gap...or should I just exchange it if they let me?
Sent from my LG-H820 using XDA Free mobile app
I got one on mine, too. Only mine is near the chin lock, the other side is pretty sealed tight so yea it's rather uneven although not by a long shot (I can see light coming through that gap).
So is your chin gap even? how did it go?
Only a bit of the left side got gap about 1cm long or less on mine not really visible and not annoying but some users got bigger problem on this!

You can sometimes see light get through it too? Anyways thanks for sharing, I guess we'll just have to live with it.
Yeah i put it on the window and i could see the light only there but i guess its a tiny gap but also if i look it from the side i can see that it is a bit more levered than my phone is about +0.5mm. I knew that this phone wouldn't have super quality but it is still the best i could find on this budget!
I have an even chin gap on both sides. If I push the bottom up it disappears but as soon as I let go it returns. It doesn't bother me, I've had this phone in a case since day 1 so I've never noticed it until I read this thread and checked.

I swore expletives because the eBay auction didn't show any scratches, but I figured I could probably fix this myself. I first started with 600 grit sandpaper.
https://imgur.com/ZiVgatj
Got it to a nice matte finish. Then I did 800, and finally 1500.
https://imgur.com/LaTPHpC
It actually didn't look too bad. So finally I took the polishing wheel to it and some cerium oxide, just like that guide mentioned.
https://imgur.com/gMKE58M
Now this takes a really long time. And actually, I'm not thrilled with how it came out. There's some VERY FINE scratches that interfere with the picture. So I'm really looking for a way to buff out very fine scratches on gorilla glass.
I tested all of this earlier on a nexus 5x because it was dead, and I couldn't even cut the screen with a razor. I have no idea how this phone had scratches, but I had to take a dremel to the thing to even emulate a scratch.
Edit: I'm not sure why my images aren't showing up

Oh, weird. I can't see them.
Either way, I figured out the issue and why this should never be attempted. We have an oleophobic coating on our screens that repel grease from your fingerprints. In buffing out scratches, you wipe away this coating.
Also, I need something more fine than Cerium Oxide to buff out scratches like this. There's a reason all the scratch guides are from 2010 and earlier. It doesn't work well on newer phones.
Oh well, back on eBay
Edit: I guess all the money I waste on eBay is not a waste because I'm learning things. Yeah! That's what I'm going to tell myself

I've...had two with this phone. First, while I was still on the Axon7, I bought a phone for 120 with a crack in it. "I'll just replace the lens over the screen" I thought. I demolished the damned phone trying to get the back off it.
My hands were only meant for destruction, it seems.
To be fair, the Axon7 was great replacing the screen. Two grills needed to come off with a heat gun and I was inside the phone. This phone is a goddamned nightmare to get apart.
Anyway, people more skilled than I generally buy the phones off me, so I lose ~$30-50. Nothing I'm gonna lose sleep over.
