Creating your own Wallpapers for the Motorola Photon - Motorola Photon 4G

I know that I have seen this forum out here before but I cannot find it. I am trying to use different pictures I have found online for my personal wallpaper. But when I use them they are either very close or they are not the entire picture. I know you have to resize them to fit the screen. I am using Adobe Photoshop to change the image size but I am having trouble coming up with the proper dimensions. Any ideas?????????????????

If you want just one screen size picture than mine are 540x960.
The stock wallpaper that comes on the Photon is 1080x960 for scrolling.

Dodol,in the market.

I tried both of those resolutions and when I try to select the image it may let me expand it to the full image but it is zoomed in and the picture is sometimes blurry. Any other suggestions?

You mentioned using PS to create the wallpaper. Are you taking pics off the internet and trying to resize them or creating new ones from scratch? What process in PS are you using to resize? You probably already know this since you are familiar with PS but enlarging a smaller photo lowers the dpi of the image which is why I am curious about the process used.
If an image is the correct size and good resolution than it should look good on the screen. Just yank any wallpaper from your phone that comes stock and check the specifics on it and try to maintain that in your other pics.
Or.....if you want post the picture you are trying to use and we can try and resize to see if our results are any better.

the right size is 1080x960 so using adobe photoshop and the croping tools
should do the trick. just use these settings and crop the image you want (for best results make sure the original image is bigger than 1080x960 or you will get a crappy picture)

How can I change the height and width to that? I try to do it and it says that exceeds the max. Thanks for the help in advance!

just make sure you're using PX (pixels) not inches or cm

If the picture is 960 pixels high and wasn't resized upward from a lower resolution, it should be fine. It should look at least as good as it does on the computer.
540x960 is the Photon's/Electrify's actual resolution (qHD) but 1080 = 540*2, *2 being the width of your typical Android wallpaper, twice the width so the picture can shift as you change home screens. (Personally, I prefer to use 540x960 images and turn off shifting. If your launcher supports this -- GO does -- your wallpaper crop tool will have the proper aspect ratio. If it doesn't, it will try to take a piece with the aspect ratio of 1080x960 out of your 540x960 image.)
I resize wallpapers to 540x960 for use on my Electrify. I posted some in the wallpapers topic; if you want some nice ones (note that they do not support homescreen shifting) have a look.

I tried resizing the images to 1080X960 and they are still zoomed in and not how I wanted them exactly. Here are some of the images. Wolverine fan as you can tell lol.
This is what my screen looks like

Any updates on these pictures and my background??????

Not really understanding your problem. Those images should work, though a lot of them are terrible (badly scaled). Start with a large image. Google "wolverine", hit Images, then hit Large (under Size).
You don't need Photoshop to crop. You might as well use a rocket launcher to kill a cockroach. Just get something light like XnView (free, also available as a Portable App) for light work. Figure out the aspect ratio (it's 1.78) and have XnView crop to that. Crop it how you want it, preferably at 540x960 or higher, and then resize down to that. I guess you could use Photoshop, but my brother pirated Photoshop 5 back in the day for fun, and the damn thing took a couple minutes to start up. Not sure if it's still the same. XnView loads instantly and does light image retouching and cropping extremely well.
Then you email it to yourself or get it on your device using your preferred method. For a 540x960 image, you will need to set your launcher's settings to not pan the wallpaper. I'm pretty sure GO Launcher EX will do it. Then when you go to crop, in GO, there's an option to not crop in the upper right corner. That will use the full image. As for the one with two Batmans facing each other (haha, kidding, but try to unsee it now), you wouldn't set that setting, and it would pan as you change homescreens.

I did google larger images and that seemed to help it a little. I will try this method later on and see how it work. Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

Weapon, download an app from the market called multipicture live wallpaper. It will properly fill the screen with an image without stretching it. Its main use is to have a different picture per homescreen, but you can have it use just one picture and you'll never know the difference. Just make sure you choose "fill screen" in the crop settings.

Its a great app on the Evo, but still not "tabletized" for larger screens.. Hopefully the widgets are also improved as well for larger screens.

I thought the same at first, but I actually like it more on the NC now than my Evo. I can now view more articles at once!
I agree .. it's good on the phone, great on the NC ...
It would be nice if they added a size option to scale up the articles in the app and on widgets.. The functionality of the app is hands down top class, but not quite tablet friendly (try adding a widget, you'll see).

I thought the widgets were lame on the Evo too, not just the NC. I dont like that it only shows a 4x1 and feeds from 1 source.
And if there is a flash video on pulse, you can open it using skyfire. I tried it on two videos and it works great.

Pulse is the best RSS reader I've found on the nook so far, best part is that it syncs to google reader.
After playing with a LCD density changer app, upping the size of the desktop loses some sharpness but pulse and icons become easier to read and use... Give it a go if you want bigger buttons etc...
My Taptu does much the same thing, you might or might not prefer the interface on that. I like being able to drag to the left to update sources in Pulse, but otherwise they're both good in their own way.

LCD Density Changer can mess up the bottom task bar, 180 to 200 dpi seems to be about the maximum, after that the notification on the left and the quick change settings on the right, get pushed off screen. I don't know if those settings are optimal for Pulse though, I was checking thread for good news feed readers and saw your question. I haven't tried pulse yet.

Okay, I installed Pulse on my NC at a density of 220. On first impression it seems to fit the screen perfectly. The bottom task bar button that seems a little off at a 220 density, is the left one. The button goes off the edge, but can be pressed. I hope this helps, I've only been at this for 2-3 days and am still climbing the sharpest part of the NC learning curve.

I have noticed this on a number of applications, including Pulse... The edges of the NC are a little "touchy" and do not always recognize the tap very well. The same thing happens for me on Pulse trying to tap the two buttons at the top of the screen. If you notice on the B&N proprietary settings screen, the buttons they place at the top corner is much bigger (i.e. and comes down farther) and I never have a problem clicking on it. Of course, it could be that I have sausage fingers...but I don't have this problem on my Droid. Keep trying and eventually it will recognize the press...
I have started using Pulse, and I am addicted to it. It's a great app, and I hope it's updated to have a bit more functionality for tablets.

Thanks so much for pointing me towards LCD density I could tell that Pulse was a nice program without it but with it I can actually read the damn thing. Also, Markets easer to view now, the keyboard is easer and zeams icons are not so tiny anymore. That one program did so much. Highly recommend it to anyone looking to use Pulse, or really anything ells on there new NC
So far Pulse is one of the best RSS Readers I've tried so far, but there are two major gripes I have with it.
1. No "Mark all as read" option for sources.
2. Displays only a set amount of articles per feed. If I have more unread, they won't load.
** PS, If these things are possible (and I just can't find them), then please let me know.**
Pulse update today.... Better widgets and a "tablet" setting for larger windows and text... Wooo!!

Yep, reading in the app looks awesome now, no more teeny tiny fonts in the boxes.
However I agree, Pulse only offers X amount of recent stories, no way I know of to request more. So you gotta look frequently I suppose.
But it's great to read.. I still find the "back" functionality in it a bit weird sometimes.. Sometimes it brings up the list of current feed stories, sometimes it goes back to the main page with all feeds, other times it goes straight back to home (usually when I hit back twice when it's only wanting it once). Ah well.

[Q] Wallpapers

hi everyone. i'm having an issue which i'm sure you all will be able to help me out. i've looked through the wallpaper collection that many of the users have and i right click the image and "save image as" and save it to the desktop. then i connect my vibrant via usb. where should i be putting the wallpapers to get the right look? if i put them in my gallery, when i try to apply the wallpaper it makes me use the crop function then after applying the wallpaper, it's all blurry and out of focus. could someone please help me out?
thanks.
Is the wallpaper proper size?
Cropping a LARGE picture WILL make it blurry.
Just use your computer.
Use paint, a free program on your Windows PC.
Crop it to the area you want, Idk the EXACT dimensions of the wallpaper (someone wanna help me on this?) but crop the about right amount, and put it on your phone.
That should help.
Or maybe the picture is a bad format? (probably not)
You can make a folder call it wallpapers in the int-sd card, and put in there. if you size them first you usually do not run into the cropping problem. Also there are easy apps from the market that do this automatically, so you could use those as well. One of the error that easy to make is thinking that the home screen is the size if you are using 3 or 5 screens then it is 3 or 5 wide by 1 tall, just in case you had not thought about that.
ok, cool. i will try both ideas. i could be mistaken, but i think the correct size for the vibrant wallpaper is 400x800...could someone verify please?
thanks.

You're correct.
ok. i tried both ideas and i'm STILL having issues with the wallpaper. i used GIMP to resize the images to 400x800 and created a folder on my sd card and named it "wallpapers", but when i go to apply the wallpaper, it makes me use the crop feature and after applying it, it's too big, blurry and out of focus and really starting to piss me off. the same thing happens if i try to use one of my pictures from my gallery as a wallpaper. can someone please help me before i lose the rest of my mind?
thanks all.
It's 480x900 I believe.
Just use the app wallpaper set and save.
Not sure why your having an issue using gallery though, works fine for me using the crop tool zoomed all the way out.
It's actually 960 X 800.
Both those sizes are obviously bigger than 400x800 so they wouldn't fix the croping problem.

yes. it is adjustable. that's the cropping tool. (if we are talking about the same "box") i tried using a couple of wallpaper programs from the market and it looks a little better, but not as good as the pre-installed ones.

About Wallpapers...

Ok I been up and down these and other forums for a few days. I registered here a while back but never posted because I had no problems... But I searched... came close but no cigar. I downloaded Numerous wallpaper apps and played around with different ratios, But no matter what I do I always find myself forced to crop the background (if it doesn't crop it zooms the hell out of the picture). I'm I missing something I'm on a completely stock rooted 2.2... I'm at my wits end with this, so close to just saying screw it and finding a decent LWP... anyone care to lend a helping hand?
Edit* Most of the stuff I find applies to portrait mode.. I use Landscape mode 99% of the time
in landscape the resolution should be 960x480
in portrait 960x800
Umm...no.
Wallpaper images, regardless of orientation need to be 960x800 in order to maintain the sharpest image possible. See my post here.
The attached file is a grid 960x800, which is the recommended size for a wallpaper in android. That is 2 times the width by the height of the phone screen.
Make this the wallpaper on your phone and test it out. you should be able to use the entire image as your wallpaper. Make sure you have auto-rotate on and that your home app is scrolling the wallpaper. If you use a home app that allows you to change the number of homescreens you will see that how much of the image is scrolled changes with the number of screens.
If you use auto-rotation you will be able to see exactly what part of an image can be seen with the phone in each orientation. This is the problem when creating wallpapers, particularly ones with content (kids, a car, etc.) that you want visible in either orientation.
I keep so many icons on my homescreens that mot of the wallpaper is covered so I use a simple wallpaper. If you want the wallpaper to be more visible and make a statement about you or your phone you have to consider many factors. The release version of the Streak with Android 1.6 was customized to allow a different wallpaper on each screen, to get that effect now you have to use an app.
MultiPicture Wallpaper
StreakSet Wallper app
WallStreak - it's buried in the thread
960x800 wallpaper gallery
So - there is no simple answer. Let us know what ends up working for you.
Edit: I like to edit my wallpaper images on my PC making sure that the image is a multiple of 960x800 (to preserve the aspect ratio) and the resize to 960x480 before copying to the phone. The gallery app will allow you to select an entire 960x800 image.
Edit2: Your home app may handle the wallpaper differently than stock or other phone apps, so test on your specific setup.
Marvin... that grid line you provided seems to be helping ALOT. It fits landscape without a problem now I can plot exact grid points... I'll do a quick run to see how it looks. If I am content I will post results but if not I will get some rest. its 2:30 lol... but thanks alot, all of you.
Def. happy with how this came out, that image wasn't the proper dimensions so I edited it (not by much) now all I have to do is line it up on a fresh canvas and boom... thanks again. def solved my problems

Glad the info helped. If you have a 960x800 version of that wallpaper allpaper attach it to a post and I will add it to the wallpaper gallery I keep.
yes i meant that in landscape only 960x480 is shown but the wallpaper is 960x800

Wallpaper sizing issues...

To get an image to fit perfectly, it needs to be 1600 pixels wide and 1280 pixels high.
This is exactly the same aspect ratio as the wallpaper crop/selection tool, so nothing of the image is lost.
But, obviously, not all of the wallpaper is shown on the screen, so to make sure you get the part you want, it would need to fit the following template:
The red area is the centre screen when holding the tablet in landscape mode, the area with the translucent blue overlay is the centre screen when holding it in portrait and the green area just represents the size the image has to be - obviously, as you swipe between screens, some of the green area will become visible.
You can test it yourself by clicking on the image, going to my dA page and downloading the full 1600x1280 version and putting it on your Tab.
The only issue I encountered with it is if you're using ADW EX, you only have a single homescreen and wallpaper scrolling is enabled, it doesn't line up on the red area like you would expect it to, it shifts to the side.
But if you switch wallpaper scrolling off, then it snaps to the red area properly (and lets face it, if you're only using a single screen, it's not like you need it to scroll...).
Now, I have read elsewhere that the reason a lot of Honeycomb wallpapers are 1920 wide is so that they still look good when the Tab is connected to an HDMI out.
I'm not so sure that's been thought-through but if you're worried about it, then you scale it up from 1600x1280 to 1920x1536 and that should be the correct aspect ratio to fit the wallpaper selection tool exactly (NB - I haven't checked this myself though) - just bear in mind that if you did that, the read and blue boxes would then cover areas of 1536x960 and 960x1536 respectively.
Hope that helps.
edit: looking at it again, I just realised it's exactly the same as for Android phones.
Taking the screen res in portrait, your image needs to be the height of the screen and twice the width.
edit #2: if you want to be able to size your wallpapers correctly without having fit it into the template above, see below...
There are two apps that might be of some use to you.
I'm not recommending them, I don't as of the time of writing use either myself but it's worth being aware of your options.
Firstly, Wallpaper Wizardrii, which allows you to set a 1280x800px image as your wallpaper and have it fit the screen perfectly by disabling wallpaper scrolling.
Secondly, Multi-Picture Live Wallpaper, which allows you to set different images as your wallpaper on each screen of your homescreen.
Many thanks for this
Thanks Step666,
This does mirror what I see in ADW. However, when I i simply use wizardrii without ADW the wallpaper image appears to be center-justified in both portait and landscape.
In ADW the wallpaper appears to be top-justified. If your wallpaper has a center of focus, that center is different in Portrait and landscape - this is a source of frustration for me. ADW is currently uninstalled and not usable for me right now.
My primary use-mode is landscape, so I suppose I can re-size the image as you note above, and then simple deal with the odd offset the rare times I am in portrait mode.
Thanks Step, I'll give this a try when I get home...

It all depends on your needs of course, I wasn't taken with the wizardrii app, it seemed very clunky and I don't like the idea of having to have something running all the time just to get my wallpaper right.
But then again, I have wallpaper scrolling switched off and ADW locked into horizontal, so it's a lot easier for me to sort out a wallpaper manually.
Thanks very much Step666.
I have a question here regarding the default wallpaper's aspect ratio... wondering how it works... as it's not able to fit into the template above, and not compatible with the aspect ratio of the Tab display either... will some of the default wallpaper will be cropped off especially when holding the Tab in portrait? Thanks.
I don't know what size Samsung's stock wallpapers are but assuming they're 1920x1408 like the I/O stock wallpapers, that means they're shorter than they should be, so when you select/crop the wallpaper, it'll be too wide, so you'll lose something from the left and/or right edges.
But obviously, as I said before, even within the selected area, you will only ever see a small portion (slightly under 50% once the status-bar covers some of it.) on the screen at any one time.

Yes, the GT-7510 Tab released in China is equipped TouchWiz 4.0 by default.
Apologies for taking so long to get back to you, here are some screenshots from my Tab...
The first two show me sizing up the template which fits exactly and the third one is the wallpaper I use - it's got the same green background, that's how sure I am that the dimensions I quoted are right (NB I don't ever see the green part because I have my homescreen set to landscape and wallpaper scrolling disabled).

The only thing I can think of is that TouchWiz changes the way you select the wallpaper...

I see.... thanks again, Step666. So, it's due to the TouchWiz... , which is making wallpaper customized more complicated... sigh...

I think, I can't be sure.
If I get a bit of free time, I might try updating again to TouchWiz and seeing what's what.

Thank you, Step666. I just don't understand why the app leaves margins...
I'm using ADW over the top over Touchwiz with just a single homescreen and I've had a very difficult time getting the wallpapers to look any decent even with Wallpaper Wizardrii.
I've been doing some mucking around with both Wallpaper Wizardrii and the Touchwiz wallpaper chooser and seem to have come up with a method that gets the wallpaper in the right spot.
I open my chosen wallpaper in Wallpaper Wizardrii and set it as the wallpaper using the 'exact' setting. This adds big useful margins around the image. I then open Root Explorer and browse to the WallpaperWizardrii folder on the SD Card (I use Root Explorer because Gallery doesn't seem to refresh the images properly, even when using SDRescan). I then select the current_wallpaper.jpg and open it in gallery. From there I can set this image as the wallpaper using the Touchwiz wallpaper cooser and I can use the big new margins to hang the wallpaper selection box over so I'm getting all my image onto the screen.
Below is how I crop the image in the Touchwiz wallpaper chooser to get it to fit properly in landscape.
Hope this helps some!
its works, however the wallpaper will become "zoomed in" again after a restart of the device... but works again once u start the wizardrii app..
and doesnt work again once u turn your screen to Portrait on homescreen..
I noticed this also, where it looked to crop the right third of the image off.
funnily enough, when I then chose an unrelated image and set that as a wallpaper, it still has 1/3 of the image missing.
Must be a bug somewhere down the line...
If I could find another app that would allow me to add the margins onto an image, removing Wallpaper Wizardrii might stop it from happening?
hey bro an update that wizardrii app doesnt work after a reboot. when it reboots, it only shows 3/4 from left to right. On the right there is a big black block where the wall paper should be. And yes I set it up unscrollable etc.

Can i have some help on making wallpapers for TP?

I have found some wicked 1280x800 wallpapers and when i go to set them i get the boxes outlining the screen position i guess ... but i can never use my entire wallpaper
any tips on how to do this?
Thanks
Im doing something wrong. I even tried using pics that were made for my HTC Incredible, and my Blackberry Curve 8320 ... and they cant be used.
how do i get wallpapers for this thing?
I'm not sure if we need Root to have access to Wallpaper folder so you can dump your custom wallpaper! I have created some custom WP but i get the boxes outlining the screen position

WOoo hold on.
No need for root acces or insane **** to set a wallpaper.
However, the wallpaper scrolling is very complex in honeycomb (it's made simpler in ICS)
You have 4 zoom state.
1) The first one is when you are in landscape.
2) Then when you are in landscape and go to the application menu (there is a zoom out)
3) Then there s when you are in portrait.
4) And finally, when you are in portrait and go to the application menu.
All thoses states are visible when you try to set a wallpaper in the gallery (all those outlines)
So what it means is that in order to set correctly a wallpaper it has to be really huge to provide content for the more zoom out state (4) but the main subject of your picture have to be in a small area in the center of the image to fit correctly in a landscape screen.
For exemple, This is a standard honeycomb wallpaper:
http://www.techcredo.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/default-honeycomb-wallpapers-bucky.jpg
It's fricking huge (1920x1408) and the subject (the balls) is smaller in the middle.
If you only care about how it look in portrait, you can make a big black image and add your wallpaper in the middle of it then set it correctly in the gallery with the help of the outlines. but, you ll see black borders when oppening the apps drawer or switching to portrait mode.
You can do this, on your PC with any software, but directly on a tablet in think Picsay (free or Pro) is the easiest way. It handles High definition picture and doesn't wreck the quality of it.
Maybe I'll make a video tutorial on how to do this.
Why not try multi live wallpaper? It worked great on my Motorola XOOM. Haven't tried it on the prime yet.But I'm sure it works.

Or i suppose you can hunt for wallpapers that are 1920x1408, would that be the right size assuming most of the image you are wanting is in the center'ish?
this is not so complex, but really a stupid step to have to go through to "make it mine". Wallpapers are a huge part of what i like to do on my devices

I have a simple and perfect solution to this gripe. as i at first was trying to figure out same thing. I hated when I tried to set a wallpaper normally through gallery, it would make you crop it. I found the solution. get the free Picseed Wallpaper app from the marketplace. then install it. now if you try to install one of their wallpapers, their method lets you set the whole thing, not a cropped version. Wait, there's more. once that app is installed, go back to the Prime gallery, where your pics are at, and install your wallpaper that way. don't bring up the quick menu that has Widgets n all that to do it. now when you go to the gallery and choose your pic to set as wallpaper, a pop up menu comes up asking you what method do you want to use to apply the wallpaper. either gallery or Picseed wallpaper. choose the Picseed wall paper method. now you can set your whole image as the wallpaper instead of being forced to crop it. Remember, set your wallpaper through normal gallery app only. if you choose the quick menu method where the Widgets n all that are at, it'll only let you use default gallery method of applying wallpaper. USE GALLERY APP ONLY, to set wallpapersl. then make sure to choose the picseed method of applying it
my method is the best. where you can actually see the whole image in high quality. it allows you to use native 1280x800 n it'll be perfect or you can use even higher resolutions with no problem. try it out. if it works for you great then you can just thank me..lol. no need to use default method and have to use a higher resolution and you still won't see whole image. with my method, it does wallpapers how its supposed to be. let me know how it goes.

really? how old are you?
Here's what I did to get a really nice, crisp wallpaper on my TF. First I opened photoshop and created a new photo with 1920 x 1408 resolution. Then I googled some photos and found one that was pretty high res. either 1600x1200 or 1920x1080, etc. Open it with photoshop and copy+paste it onto the 1920x1408 blank photo. Paint the background a similar color to the edge (i chose black) and then copy it to the TF and set it as desktop. This way you get the image centered without having it stretched out and looking pixelated.
