NOT TRUE!
The XDA app (free version) looks for an IMEI number which the Nook does not have. DizzyDen has put together an app to patch your framework.jar file to give your Nook a fake IMEI based off your Serial number so apps like the XDA app, Swype, HBO GO, and the Xfinity app which look for IMEI numbers will work.
Is using Tapatalk just the easier idea?
Guys i hate to break it to all of you but the XDA APP has work on cm7 since day 1. No mods no tapatalk pro no nothing. install it from the market and run what ya brung. i have never had a problem with it once.
EDIT: This is without any hacking of the IMEI at all.
I will have to try out the imei file. Sick of seeing "process com.quoord.tapatalkxda.activity"
Thanks for the ideas

This is true on phones (which have an IMEI) not on the Nook...

In my experience the XDA never worked right. On both NookieFroyo and on CM7 I could use it to browse but once I tried to login it would force close. Works great on my Eris though!
I wonder what is the advantage of the app is anyway? I just use Opera and go to the website. I'm doing it right now.
again i beg to differ I have never once had an issue with the XDA app from the day i got my nook. Never hacked anything. It has always worked perfectly every single time. Not to say other people my not have issues, but both my Nook and My Wife's nook has never had an issue.
edit: Question or clarification perhaps. Are you guys getting errors just trying to load the app or when making a reply?
The error it's typically upon logging in.

When you say it worked from day one, which version of the app and CM7 are you referring to? And what are you on now?
I have a recent SD install CM7/n87 and a fresh download of the XDA free app, and it FCs everytime when you try to do anything relating to log in. Can you confirm what you're running, may have done special to get it to work?

fuul, what you describe is exactly the problem I am having
I owe this thread an apology. I had never actually tried to login on the XDA app. I just browsed forums.
Note However: Now that i have logged into the app. I can still browse fine, the only time i'm getting a FC is when i try to reply to a thread.
Again i apologize for not testing further before spouting off at the mouth. Yes there is in fact a problem, i just don't experience "as bad" of a problem as some of the rest of you.
I gotta say that its kind of rediculous this app has problems running on the nook correctly since xda seems to be the center of Nook Color hacking universe.
Then again the app is pointless when I can just use my browser. In fact I'm now getting rid of any and all apps that can be replaced with my browser. What's the point?
just get the xda premium app, that does not require an imei number or do the framework hack.

Anytime I can use an app made for a particular forum I use that over the browser anyday. Having multiple bookmarks saved for each forum thread and for each forum starts to clutter up the rest of my non forum bookmarks. An app like XDA lets you save favorites within the app itself, therefor freeing up adding 20 some odd extra bookmarks of threads I like to keep up on.
The site provides that same functionality. You can subscribe to threads eliminating the need to fill your browser with extra bookmarks.
When I open my browser and click on my xda bookmark I'm automatically signed in and ready to pickup on all the threads I have participated in or have interest in. I just don't see the need for a xda app. There has to be a reason for the app. There must be something it does for the user the website will not. WHY!?!?!?!? LOL

Lower bandwidth for one? Noticed that with the stock browser and dolphin HD, there are times when browsing the XDA site directly it has issues rendering certain pages. Could be luck of the draw and a misbehaving ad banner for all I know, or a bad internet connection from my side, no idea. But overall the XDA app feels like it's lower bandwidth.
Since I haven't been able to get the logged in version of the free XDA app to work, I couldn't tell you beyond just this if it's worthwhile.

Care to explain what it is? Some kind of jar reader?
It is a new app store competing against the android and amazon markets. It has alot of free apps. But it is not a hacker site or app. I downloaded the app after reading about it from android central or Droid life or one of those. You have to download it from the website like you had to with the amazon store. It is legit but I think the apps are the phone apps but of course we know some of them work on tablets. So far I have downloaded backbreaker but it was messed up and splashtop which worked. I also got beautiful widgets for free. I read a little bit about how the apps developers get paid and it is completely legit. Took me a minute to figure out how to download the app.

+1 for DroidWall. It has the added benefit of blocking ads in a particular app if you decide to not allow it access to the network.
However, I should say that it doesn't EXACTLY do what you are asking. It allows you control as to what apps may or may not access the network, either via 3g, WiFi, or both. As far as I know, it doesn't tell you when one of the apps you allow access to the network actually does.
If you want something that asks you to allow/deny, try this
ps this was the 3rd result for android firewall, the first 2 being droid wall, just saying everything is out there google and you shall find.
Edit: well it seems twitter brought the company behind whispermonitor and thus all the downloads have disappeared, I will try to find an apk.
Edit2: it seems that whispermonitor only worked on the nexus S and one other phone, shame it looked promising.
Your best bet is droid wall, there is also Pdroid but it needs a rom patch.
Thank you
Will try your recommend solution

Well i did some more reading about it, and its more of a whole rom/rom mod than an apk file and it was only compatible with the nexus S and Desire I think.
Droidwall is your best bet.
Avast firewall do better than droidwall, it really alert you if any apps trying to make an connection on yhe the background, but avast is big app that come with antivirus protection which seems to be useless for android os so far.

Phone
Well, in the end, regardless of what some of us may think our L9’s are, they are phones. I know, surprising right? Our phone has a good looking stock dialer, but MAN IT’S SLOW. So I’ve created a list of replacements that operate perfectly on our device.
exDialer: This is my personal choice, and definitely the one I recommend the most. The UI is elegant, and it’s incorporated into an extremely efficient combination of Dialer/Contacts setup. The sheer ability to switch from Dialer to Contacts smoothly without lag is an enigma in itself. If that wasn’t enough, there’s a decent amount of themes available on the Play Store to further mix it to your liking. The ICS theme is my personal favorite.
Dialer One: This is a pretty good app for those who want a fast dialer for their phone, and don’t mind not having a Contacts app to match it. This doesn’t work for me, since I need Contacts integrated into my Dialer like exDialer does. But this app does the job for those that need a dialer app by itself.
Contacts
Contacts+: Same as the app above, it’s just a shortcut to take you straight to the Contacts portion of the app. Recommended to those who want a closely integrated feel of Messaging, Dialing, and Contact…ing.
Messaging
Textra: Download this app NOW. This is seriously, as of now, the best texting app for Android. Ever heard of ChompSMS? It supports native Emoji, Group SMS with iPhonies, doable customization, and an absolutely SICK notification feature. Seriously, download this app, next text you get, click the notification and watch the magic.
Browser
Opera Browser: Okay, so this has been updated consistently for about the last year or so, and I’m LOVING it. It has a ton of options, including cloud compression on a low connection so it speeds up YOUR browsing speeds. It has the usual problems, notably lag when loading multiple images and sometimes not registering your touches when you click links. It’s Chromium based, which means it is similar to Chrome. Obviously.
Chrome: Brought to my attention by @peoplegetpeople, it's a good browser and it is useful if using Chrome on your computer and wish to sync bookmarks/history!
Must-Have Apps
Ttorrent: This app is for torrenting and "sharing" (uh-huh...) files.

I use Now Playing for music - it's got a cards-esque UI, plays really well, beautiful widgets. And it works with ViPERFX, which is good.
Also, I've found I really like Sliding Messaging. It was buggy, sometimes it doesn't work well with MMS, but it's themeable and the new Slideover feature is great.
