I love this tablet and I REALLY want to keep it, but the WIFI is ATROCIOUS. It works fine in my small apartment, but it's clear to me that it is going to be a complete and utter headache using this thing while traveling. I'm getting about 3-6 Mbps down about 20 feet away from my router, while my Galaxy Nexus gets about 12 Mbps and my crappy iPad1 gets about 20 Mbps. I can't justify keeping this thing with such lackluster WIFI performance. It's just unacceptable.

I started a thread regarding this but people blow it off because their Wi-Fi is probably working just fine and don't want to bother testing..... see here

did you run the updates today to see if you got any signal improvements?

I spent quite a lot of time in hotels while travelling, and I can say that would be the real test. You never know what kind of signal you'll get in a hotel. It can depend on what room and floor you have, and in many cases, you can be on the edge of reception. Some hotels are crappy all over, and you just don't know until you get there. If the device is sub-par with Wifi, that would not give me confidence at all while travelling.
I did install today's updates, and they made no difference. The WiFi is terrible compared to other devices. And it pisses me off to no end, because I want to love (and keep) this tablet.
And the hotel analogy is a great one. That's exactly what has me leaning towards returning my Prime.

Same issues here, TP has horrible WiFi performance, even standing 5 feet from router. I get 1.5Mbps down/1.75 up. On my iPad 2 I get 16Mbps down and 3 Mbps up.
I have other issues as well...this tablet is looking more and more like a dud...
I'm kind of afraid to buy this tablet now. I wanted to buy it (for the quad core performance and all) but this thing just seems like a bad deal with all the reports of things going wrong with it.
And with some tablets working and some not, the manufacturing quality and checking must be seriously bad.
How do you have your home wireless access point configured?
Have you attempted changing your settings, like switching between G and N, going G only, or N only, dual band, disable WEP/WPA and go woth MAC filtering, etc.
There's so many factors that can cause differences in bandwidth reads over wireless. But if you done all this troubleshooting, you may very well may have ended up with a dud and you should consider exchanging for another one.
on my laptop i get about 33Mbps down. Onthe prime i get 22. Sadly it`s the same on the original transformer. Should we expect similar speeds as laptops from tablets?

Honestly, I didn't mess around with my settings. This decision was intentional. My other devices perform MUCH better than my Prime with my current settings. Also, the performance difference gets worse as I move further away from my router, suggesting that the problem is caused by the WiFi radio in the Prime having weak reception.
More specifically, my main concern with the bad WiFi is getting a connection when I'm away from home, in places where I have no control over network settings. This is the real issue for me.
And I seriously doubt I have a faulty unit. It looks like the WiFi in all units is subpar, with many people not realizing it yet because they're using the tablet at home with a good signal.
I was worried that there was some truth behind those old rumors that the Prime was delayed because of WiFi problems. As usual, it looks like where there's smoke, there's fire.
Edit: I should also add that I tried the WiFi on 2 other networks at friends' houses. In both situations, as I moved further away from the router, the Prime signal seriously degraded more than my other devices, to the point where I got to a spot where the Prime had zero signal, while my Galaxy Nexus and my iPad still held a usable signal.

I actually noticed depending on router you have it will make a significant difference in range specifically my older b/g router works alot better then newer dual band N router. I agree with you though taking it on vacations and business trips is what I worry about too because the signal strength generally can be expected to be weaker.
This doesn't help per se with the Prime's wifi, but if wifi perf is a problem for on-the-go, you can use a repeater to boost the signals. The repeater's antenna are more powerful than those in mobile devices, and will help with marginal (or even non-functional) signals.
It's one more thing to carry, but if that's important to you.
For the techs, an old WRT54G retrofitted with DD-WRT firmware would be a capable repeater. You can find other more compact routers that can be retrofitted.
Testing from the same router, Prime gets 2 bars while the original TF gets 3 bars, signal is definately stronger and more consistent on TF1, download speed is slightly slower on Prime too. Assuming both tablets have the same wireless adapter, the problem most likely lies within the aluminum casing of Prime.
I just ran two speed tests each, using me evo 3D, nook and my Prime. The nook was the worst with 6.6 & 7.2 dl / 1.4 up. (I need to tweak something!)
The Prime and Evo 3D performed about the same. Prime 10.8 & 10.4 dl / 1.4 up, and Evo 3D 10.9 & 10.6 dl / 1.4 up.
I think was at a friend's who's router is in the back corner of his house. Deadzones all over the place. I lost wifi connection on the Prime but barely held onto it with the Evo. I've had to "foeget" and re-add on there on the Evo before so I did the same with the Prime. It didn't work. But when I walked into the room with the router and did it, it grabbed on and I've not lost it again in the same place I lost it before and in places my phone and others struggle. (back patio, etc)
Not sure if this helps but wanted to give my test results and what happened the one time I lost signal.
My original Transformer gets 1 bar (and loses connection constantly) in a room where a laptop gets 3-4 bars. (it's a room adjacent to the one with the router)
I thought it was normal and my router is poor until I checked with the laptop. It was the same with another router and with different settings. I hope Prime isn't worse than that!
WIFI is an ahole, he stole my gf kicked my dog and took all my money!
I am awaiting delivery of my Prime, have and seen isses on Wifi, and now the new Prime improving Wifi issues.
My question, might oughta be under Q & A, but put it here.
Our phones have dialer access codes to check wifi strength. Does anyone know if there is the same way to access on the Prime, or an alternative way?
Rather than complain and "what if", it would be nice to find a way to test the reception ourselves, obtaining real numbers, not a bar in a corner that varies from phone to phone to tablet.
Download WiFi Analyzer.
I have the prime....just got it yesterday. I downloaded wifi analyer and compared it to my galaxy nexus. My office gets horrible wifi reception because its a separate frame from my house. The nexus and the primes wifi signals are identicle. Conclusion, wifi is fine.

My Prime's WiFi signal is also comparable to my Galaxy Nexus. However, that's not a fair comparison. Laptops and tablets, in general, should have better WiFi reception than cell phones.
I can just as easily point to my iPad1 getting about 20 Mbps and my Prime getting about 8 Mbps at 40 ft away from my router at home and draw the conclusion that the WiFi is not "fine," or at least is not up to par with other comparable devices.
The app that nyijedi mentioned will tell you what you want to know about signal strength and can tell you plenty if you want it to.

Thank you for the app suggestion, it is exactly what I want to do!! I hit the Thanks button.
I also have Ipad, I want ITunes gone along with no Flash Player. But I also use it for business, so wifi is a must, not a luxury, GPS no big deal. We have a vacation home with a distant shared modem, so my Ipad can strain, but I will not pay big bucks for something that is worse!!
This will give me a measurable number when I take both back there next week (mine doesn't get delivered till Friday), hopefully its not an issue, and mine works, but this way I know. I can live with my Ipad, wait for another tablet, there will be more. Have always appreciated Asus's quality, but if its not working right out of the box, repair by Tech Support won't get it.
I will have 2 weeks to test, if it doesn't work right, its gone, if its questionable and Asus offers to give us credit for a trade in, I will live with that,

No problem. Good luck with the testing. From my testing, it seems that the amount of interference (e.g., other WiFi signals) also comes into play with speed, so hopefully if your vacation home doesn't have many signals around, you'll be okay. Either way, please keep us posted on your results.

Not according to my tests. I have conducted a whole series of tests with laptop/tf101/ipad1/galaxy nexus/prime tf201.
Tf101 gets by far the best performance of them all...20% better than my laptop at longest range in house.
The laptop comes in second about 10% better than my prime.
The prime is in third place...maybe 5% better than ipad1
The. Nexus is last...sometimes losing the wifi at the farthest corners of the house.
This afternoon I fiddled with my router antenna and ran a test at 40ft...2walls in between. My prime scored 11Mbps DL. The laptop scored 12.5 Mbps and the tf101 scored 18 mbps. The ipad1 scored 10mbps. All of them scored higher than before my antenna fiddling.
I have just connected a higher gain antenna to the router I will post the results on my wifi test thread.

The conclusion should be that YOUR prime's wifi might be crap...I would either return or RMA.
Mine, on the other hand, has wifi that works very well.

1) If your wifi is pulling less than 1 Mbps, you likely have a defective Wifi radio. The preproduction ones that were defective had a problem where they wouldn't download faster than 3 Mbps, even when right next to the router, and would get less than 1 Mbps elsewhere. If you're suffering the same symptoms, exchange your Prime.
2) Someone mentioned in another thread that setting his router to 802.11g only instead of 802.11n noticeably increased his speeds. I finally got around to trying this, and it also helped my speeds. I went from about 4-8 Mbps to 12-15 Mbps at about 40 feet from my router. Anyone have any ideas why this is?

Could you tell me what app you are using on iPad to test, I looked thru apple market and cannot find anything to test wifi strength -I hate iTunes - so that I can compare reception to prime, ll use wifi analyzer unless there is a better app.
I do not feel iPad is strong receiver, but would like to see results
I don't mean to sort of "hijack" this thread, but it's a totally relevant question, I swear!
For those people with confirmed bad wifi. Is it that the signal fluctuates a lot (so sometimes you'll see 50mbps, but then the other half of the time, you'll only see 1mbps), or does it actually STAY at 1mbps or however slow it gets?
I'm just asking because I've seen my Prime pull 5 mbps sometimes... but then most of the time, it ranges anywhere from 20 to 50 mbps.
I received mine, decided to test before I loaded anything or tried to root (in case I needed to return it) which I do.
Used several different apps, best results came from Speedtest.
First, absolutely no GPS - no satellites seen, Ipad worked great, Nexus s4g saw 9
Tests ran in room directly above router, my office -
ping Download Upload
HP Laptop 38 11.87 1.43
Ipad 41 10.93 1.41
Nexus s4g 40 11.83 1.64
Prime 45 3.67 1.3
ICS loaded immediately - but had unresponsiveness on screen, and the slow download was very self evident when running same apps downloads next to the Ipad.
So its going back - I'm very disappointed, wanted my Ipad gone because I don't like Apple - but it works, doesn't do everything I want, but works flawlessly.
The Prime - I'm not going to rma, too many problems reported and I don't feel like being a $500 tester that I can't return. Its one thing to put up with issues when I hack and flash roms, that is my choice. But for this kind of expenditure,
I will not put up with something that doesn't run perfect out of the box.
Sad, Asus has always had such outstanding hardware, this is not how they operate. They need to do something across the board for early adopters, too
many that will remember this (I will) next time they purchase. Meaning a credit
toward the new 700 if we ordered early, before their announcement, and had to return. I just don't feel like ordering again, waiting, testing, and running to the store plus will be on vacation and could miss my return window and be stuck with gift card from BB
It seems that all the primes that I have tested from Bestbuy (4 primes and counting) have no satellite locks and only decent wifi. Please only post if you have received a good tablet with no issues from them.
I have purchased two of them from Best Buy, one I received on the 22nd and the other I purchased it two days ago from my local best buy, the first and only one they have received My first one is "perfect", but my 2nd one has two hardly noticeable screen bleeds which are only really distinguishable if you know were to look (bottom left corner under the return arrow and the recent app button) and one would only spot them during the boot up screen. They are both able to acquire a GPS lock, even indoors but once I move it the connection is lost, outside I can walk and it stays connected for the most part; however, I have not really tested the GPS function while driving (I will try it today... if I remember too but I don't have much hope for it which is why I purchased the $5 GPS workaround). They both get good wifi, by this I mean that anywhere my phone (HD7) is in range so are my primes if my phone is out of range so are my primes and they both get about the same speed. No freezing issues... ok the stock web browser does freeze but rarely maybe once every other day or so and most of the time I just hit wait and it comes back to live. Over all I love my primes/prime my first one is busted until Asus unlocks the boot loader, I just hope its before my 45 days are up or I will be stuck with 2 primes
It took both my primes about a good 5min to get a GPS lock with wifi outside, could not get either one to even see a satellite indoors before getting a lock outside. I originally tried to acquire a GPS lock without wifi outside on my 1st prime but gave up after 5 min. I also tried it with my 2nd one but no luck; although it did see around 5-7 satellites after the first 3min and up to 9 satellites at one point but after 10min and no lock I turned on the wifi and got a lock with in a minute. After that I was able to get a lock indoors with in 3-5 min

No problems with mine.
None of the common problems
I got mine from BB.com about 2 weeks ago. The device was working 100% fine. GPS was solid, WIFI was great. There was a tiny bit of screen leak in the lower corners, but nothing that I could not live with.
The "un-common" problem occurred when I got my dock...also from BB.com. When I inserted the tablet into the dock the screen would white out, almost like it had its brightness turned up to 1000. I was also able to replicate the problem out of the dock by placing minor pressure at the center of the bottom bezel near the charging port. I have RMA'd it and just put it on a UPS truck today. I will let everyone know how I make out.
Bought mine from Best Buy. Outside of the GPS issue mine is great. WiFi seems fine...on par with my phone/laptop, so no complaints.
Bought mine no wifi,no gps issue, but a tiny bit of screen bleed, but i can live with that. Got my keyboard but i returned it., dont really need one
Proud owner of Transformer Prime TF201
Received mine yesterday from BB online... not problems as of yet. Haven't had the chance to fully test the GPS. I've looked closely and can't find any dead pixels or screen bleed. No creaks in the chassis, and on wifi at home was getting 18mbit down, 5 up (which is about right, I pay for 20mbit down 5mbit up)
No issues here, it has worked great
Aside from some very minor light bleeding on the right side of the screen, no problems at all.
No issues with mine. I did think that the prime was a tad slower browsing the internet than the OG transformer, but seems to have been cleared after the updates.
...but the OG transformer was running Revolver, oc'd...
Mine is fine.

Good to hear. Im going on my third next week from Bestbuy, I thought since they havent had any instock, all the stock in the warehouse for OMS orders are from the same batch. So there is still hope.
Just out of curiosity why are you asking if BB ones are good or not since they all come from asus directly? I'd would worry more about first batch vs 2nd batch.
I got one from BB.com around Jan 12. The screen seems good, no bleed or dead pixels, bt/wifi speed drop seems to be in line with what would be expected, and GPS performs as expected. GPS is not great but does get a lock, though it loses the lock when driving.
I'm not sure about the WIFI performance though. It is fast when signal is strong but when I get near the edge of its range it drops out dramatically faster than either my phone or my old viewsonic gtablet. The TFP gets <1mbps while the gtab still gets >10mbps. Does this sound in line with what other users are getting, or would a replacement possibly fix the issue? The signal strength according to WIFI Analyser is about the same from all three devices when doing the test. If this is the expected performance I'll be returning it to wait for the TF700 later this year. I'd rather get one that works well now though, as it is a great device and I could care less about the higher res screen and camera.
I, no issues form my BB purchase, aside from the weak gps obviously.
Bought mine from best buy before the new year and have had absolutely no issues at all. Wifi has been great (picks up college wifi which at my school has a history of being ****ty). Gps I only tested once, which was the same day I got it, and it never completely connected. Keep in mind that was indoors. I never would use GPS on my tablet so idc. But besides that no screen bleeding or tearing. Got the dock as well and must say I love this tablet. Much faster and not even comparable build quality to my old Gtab 10.1. My only complaint is I wish the micro SD card slot was actually built so it could hold a micro SD card all the time, but oh well I'm happy

That is what I got from Best Buy on an exchange last week as well. They said they just got the stock in 2 days before. That said, this one works better than my old one.
The issues are not tied to particular serial numbers.
I also have a BCOKAS that has no light bleeding or wifi issues. It works perfectly.
There are many C1 serial numbers that have issues as well.
BCOKAS here
I have no light bleeding whatsoever, wifi is fine for my purposes. Right now I'm one floor up in the opposite corner of the house getting 2 bars, -70 to -80 dbm. I haven't used a bt

i have bcokas also and dont see any wifi issue.. one thing i did notice.. others might have too.. that gps doesnt lock inside the house.. the moment i step near the window i get 12 satellites..and locks on atleast 7-9. weird.. but its probably related to the weak antenna as mentioned before.
But does anyone really use gps on a wifi tab .. and if so ..for what?
C1OKAS
Also from Amazon. I returned the 1st one because it was junk... nothing worked after the ICS upgrade.
Amazon replaced with a new C1OKAS and this one upgraded to ICS fine. Wifi is still challenged and weak and still has the Bluetooth issues but not as bad. The GPS is junk. After 25 min I'm lucky if it will fine 7 birds and at best locked onto 2 of them.
Also did the update from ASUS this morn. No change.
Amazon doesn't have any more units... from the posts I'm not sure they reordered. So when my return window hits in about two weeks we may be SOL.
i have BCOKAS
no backlight bleeding all, Gps i get 10 satellite connection withing a minute, wifi full bar around my house, have not tried the bluetooth yet. I suck that i don't really care about GPS or Weak Wifi and i have one of the good ones while others who really needed have those problems. I do care about backlight bleeding and thanx god that i do not have that problem either. Do not care either for bluetooth and have not tested it yet. i would not return it even if bluetooth wasn't working.

What black magic is this?
Did you use Google Maps to test GPS? If so, then please download "GPS Test" from Market and see how many sats it sees and locks on.
Hi. Did you test wifi while you had a Bluetooth connection from more than 20' from the router? Could you try that? Perhaps it's time to try another Prime.
GPS Test screenshots:
Tested with WiFi turned off. The reception seems like a bit weak, the average SNR is 20-30dB(Has more yellow bars). Compared with my Nexus S, almost get same result.
Also tested navigation with Google map, using my Nexus S to supply internet connection. The navigation works fine, just like my Nexus S.
Although the sensitivity is not as good as my Garmin 7490LMT, but it's acceptable, usable. I don't expect more because I won't use a tablet as my navigation tool.

I live in a 2 bedroom high-rise building, so the space is limited. But, I went to Coquitlam Poirier Recreation Center, they have WiFi but I don't know where is their router located. I was sitting in the swimming pool viewing area. I think my prime is better than my Nexus S because the prime get -50dBm but Nexus S get -60dBm (WiFi Analyzer). I didn't have the Bluetooth connected at that time.

I don't have even a tiny deficiency on my prime, the only thing I don't like is the color. I want a Champagne one but they don't have.
Tested WiFi with Bluetooth headphone connected and a music playing. I don't see any significant signal fall out on WiFi Analyzer. The prime is about 10m away from the router but separated with a dry wall.
I have a C10KAS bought in Canada as well and I don't quite have the same results as you. I have some screen bleed and my GPS is not good. The Galaxy S line and I think the Nexus S have notoriously bad GPS reception so that's not really a fair comparison.
However, like you I've had pretty much flawless Wifi reception along with all the other great things you listed. =)
Hey there,
I just got mine in Belgium and I was wondering when you say that the wifi is better than your nexus s (I happen to have the same also hence my question), what are the results distance wise? In my house, I've tested both around 20ft from the router (on the same floor). The prime got a better signal indeed but the dl speed is not as fast as the nexus s. and once I start getting even further, the prime gets really overpassed both as signal strength or dl speed. I don't know if I should return it or not, but if this is the best result people are getting from the tablet, it's quite sad. when you guys say pretty much flawless, what distance is acceptable to you?
I will also try to check on some open wifi spaces and let you guys know
Great news spa. The deal breaker for me is Bluetooth and wifi must work together. Gonna try another prime soon I think. I wish future shop or bestbuy carried the 64gb version. Their return policy is so much better than NCIX.
Can you test Bluetooth over an HD YouTube or Netflix...i have a Canadian CO2k and Ihave the wifi/bluetooth issue

Yeah, don't buy prime from NCIX.

I tested last night, it works with HD youtube smoothly in any room in my apartment.
You know the signal noise level should be higher in an apartment then it in a house, and in my situation, I can't even find a non-used channel for my wifi router, so the interferance is obviously high. I mean it's not comparable for people in different situation, if you want one prime just buy one from your local store and have it tested in your home/office, wherever you want to use it.
There are lots of facts we need to consider, such as what kind of router you use, the bluetooth device, and so on... whoever's test is just a particular case and it might not work for you at all.

Why not ? I bought from there with express rma insurance. There shouldn't be a problem right ?

Thanks I will check bestbuy and order one from there. NCIX, will not take a prime back unless they feel there is a major problem, so a little light bleed or not perfect wifi, will not cut it with them. I buy so much from them and I had to fight to get them to take mine back 3days after I bought it due to major light bleed and no wifi with Bluetooth. Plus they wanted to charge me a 15% restocking fee. So I'll never buy any non computer component from them again.

Ok so I just ordered Prime No. 2 with a keyboard and all from FutureShop. Lets hope things have improved and everything is good outta the box. At least if its not up to snuff I can return it easily.
Thanks guys for the suggestion of ordering it there - I dint know they ahd the 64GB version.

I have a prime from staples in Canada too and everything seems ok. No major issues. I can get a good lock on 10/12 satellites indoors from the GPS. My wifi is a little weak; About the same as iphone 4 probably. It seems all good. I was thinking about returning it because of the wifi issues. But, i am still undecided. It works good in my house. If you turn on BT the wifi signal does cut like 5dB. However, i don't use BT.
Overall good tablet. Screen is nice. Seems to run smooth.
Serial: C10KAS
Got it one week ago.

Just remember that if you don't have everything working, it may affect your resale value should you decide to upgrade and try to get a decent dollar for your tablet. Just something to think about before your chance to return your unit expires.
When my new tablet arrives I will put it through every test I can think of even if I don't plan on using a certain feature, because I want to be able to sell it down the road.
Cheers
