I've done a little looking around for a soft key mod but very little luck. Is there a mod to put soft keys permanently on the bottom of the screen ? Move the dock up little and put the 4 keys rough below.

Check out button savior but you might need the paid version to set it up like you want but good app.

Moving the dock up is something that has never been done before and would require quite a bit of screen-redoing.
What I used tho do is disable my dock and turn on button savior, placing the keys at bottom center.

i played around with button savior and softkeys app but the problem is they overlap ontop of programs or my keyboard. I was looking for something that made its own area.

The low end touched on this by saYing it would take a lot of screen redoing.
Basically a lot of base code would need overwriting so Android would fit the remainder into the area. Any app won't be able to shrink and redraw everything, nor would Android draw to avoid the soft buttons.
That's not to say it's impossible, I just don't think it's been done yet.
No but maybe a launcher??? Lightning launcher lets me adjust the size of everything. And move it and...........

I don't like how the S3 has included a menu button and it now causes apps that have updated to the ICS framework to look weird eg the Gmail app.
So is there anyway to force this back please?

Well the whole reason for it not being there is because it's got it's own fully dedicated button roughly 0.5cm below where you're looking.

Personally I detest the on screen buttons and menu options that are rampant with ICS and Jelly Bean. That's one of the negatives about the One X as well.
We get these phones with larger screens and they want to take up 25% of it with things than be better handled with actual physical buttons.
Glad Samsung went with what they did.
Now that we have root, does anyone know how to install the MOD we had for the SG3 where it would add on screen soft keys and make the home button ONLY wake up the phone. It would also disable the capacitive buttons....I miss this so much...absolutely hate the Samsung home button.
Thanks ahead of time!!
On-screen nav is literally one or two line changes. There's guides all over this site. Why dont you search and maybe figure it out yourself.

seriously. please do us all a favor and get a different phone so we don't have to deal with you.
anyway. i wasn't really happy with the way this looked or worked so I went back. But if tweaked it could look / function better. It changed it so that if you hold the home button on screen and physical you get S-Voice. The on screen nav was really big also and the page indicators were covered by icons. It just looked and felt sloppy and there was no way to customize anything obviously.

The touchwiz on-screen nav buttons are ugly... reverting back. Wonder if there's an easy way to get them themed to vanilla.
For anyone who need help!
ONSCREEN BUTTONS
The guide before is correct and works for s3 and note 2. (we are all trying to learn)
1) download root explorer
2) navigate to /system
3) tap mount r/a
4) then tap and hold down on the file "build. prop" and choice "open in text editor"
5) go to the bottom and add "qemu. hw.mainkeys=0
6) hit back button and save.
7) reboot phone.
DISABLING MENU AND BACKFLIP BUTOON
1) open root explorer
2) navigate to /system/usr/keylayout/
3) tap mount r/w
4) find generic.kl
5) tab and hold. Then " open in texteditor "
6) find
key 139 menu
Key 159 back
7) so they look like this
#key 139 menu
#key 158 menu
8) tap back button twice and save.
9) reboot

Only thing I don't like is this kind of messes with the dialer DPI, and now the top of recent calls and favorites is being cut off by a big block of blue.
Edit: On Bean's new ROM, the top names are still covered, but the "blue" block is now transparent stuff just a blue border, so the names are now visible, but you can only touch the part of the name that sticks out from the bottom of the block. This is definitely more manageable though.

Sorry to bump my own post, but I figured out how to remap APP_SWITCH to MENU, but I can't seem to get the 3 dot overflow menu button to show up in apps (like chrome), or map google now/search to long press home or long press menu. If anyone has any insight on this I'd greatly appreciate it.
While this isn't exactly what you want, I think you should be able to enable the navigation bar to give you the virtual home/recent/back buttons and trigger the virtual menu button. I don't have this phone, but it should work to just open up the build.prop and add the line "qemu.hw.mainkeys=0" (requires root obviously) and reboot. I've only done this on a galaxy s cm so it may go badly with a stock rooted... try at your own risk. If you do try, please respond (and post a screenshot ) as I'm curious and considering this phone.
I tried adding that line (again) but no luck...

It looks like (from the screenshot) that you have it =1, not 0. You want it to =0 because it's like saying false, there are no hard keys so android should add the navigation bar. Try changing it to =0, and maybe use a text editor like the one in root browser (free) and reboot. Let me know what happens
Wow you're right... stupid mistake on my part haha, I'll get right back to you after I try it again.
EDIT: Yup that did the trick. Not quite what I was looking for but cool anyways. Thanks!

Can you post a screenshot? I'm not sure which you mean (3 dot menu or nav bar). Enabling the nav bar is just an easy way to get both a multitask button and the virtual menu button in an app's action bar. I'm not sure about just getting the action bar menu button, but if you don't figure it out it is a setting in cm10/10.1
Its not a big deal since I think it only applies in the settings menu, but yeah I would love to have cm 10 haha
Edit: Sorry about the ridiculous image size...

This is a mod how to enable navigation bar(on screen buttons) , its very simple and easy...
Add the following line at the end of buid.prop file
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
now on reboot we will have nav-bar like on nexus 4
To disable hardware keys, I used root explorer go to system/usr/keylayout click and hold on kaypad.nl and choose from menu open in text editor and 139,158,172 edit the home to hom and do the same on all 3 lines and hit save and reboot,
Plus I went and deleted all the 139, 158, 172 lines from external_kbd.kl, Generic.kl, MHLRCP.kl, osp3-input.kl and qwerty.kl. I dont know if that helps because I deleted them first then edited the lines in kaypad.nl.
Thanx to accentuer he made a zip that works also and might be easier for some people

Many like this from what I have read. It can come in very handy should hardkeys stop functioning.
With all due respect, for me it takes up screen space I would prefer not to give up. It is a matter of personal preference and options are always a good thing.

Hmm, tough choice: give up some screen real estate to gain a dedicated task switcher button and context menu button.

If you don't mind trying something, you could open /system/usr/keylayout/keypad_8064.kl in a text editor and put a "#" (without the quotes) at the beginning of the last 3 lines.
Change:
Code:
key 158 BACK VIRTUAL
key 172 HOME VIRTUAL
key 139 MENU VIRTUAL
To
Code:
#key 158 BACK VIRTUAL
#key 172 HOME VIRTUAL
#key 139 MENU VIRTUAL
I have not tried this as I don't have any plans to use this mod... may want to do a quick backup first in case it renders your phone unnavigable.

In case any developers are looking for new ideas to fold in....
I would like to see a custom circular menu surround the spen tip when I long press and have about 12 customizable options in the "full circle" menu. It seems like a waste that long press with the pen does the exact same thing as my finger. Something like Pie but full circle.
What do you want to see?

I'd like to see the AOKP octo lock screen with customizable shortcuts/apps and icons as well as the AOKP toggles in touchwiz roms
How about google wallet? JK I would like to see an option for a stock jellybean note 2 with s-pen capabilities, or maybe a siri like feature that works better than S-Voice. For the love of god im from michigan and have a "normal" accent and that stupid thing CANNOT ever get what I say right, Siri never had any problems during my brief stint on an iphone 5, neither does the google now.
The lmt launcher is only thing I added. That's the only thing the note 2 is missing. Something that keeps you from reaching across the device for the back key.
I would love for the Note 2 to allow any app for the Multi-View function w/out root... =)

I'd like customization of the notification drop down (remove toggles, remove brightness slider). As well as true TABLET MODE on touchwiz, something akin to Paranoid Androids hybrid set up.
I feel the tablet mode mod that exists now leaves something to be desired. That's not to say that I don't appreciate whoever came up with it to begin with, I would just like a little more polish.
