Hi, guys.
Inert/dead/hung Nooks can sometimes be resurrected by this insanely easy trick.
First, so you’ll understand what’s going on:
All the Nook Tablet’s buttons are really soft buttons. Even the Power button is really a soft button: All it does is communicate with the OS.
That’s worth stressing: the Nook power button is not a simple mechanical on/off switch, but a switch that sends a signal to tell the operating system to power off.
It’s sort of like the power button on the front of most PCs. The real on/off button is usually on the back of the PC (and is absent on a Nook). A PC’s front panel button, like the Nook’s power button, communicates with the OS, sending a shutdown signal.
Why is this important? Many times (in my experience) when a nook appears dead or even bricked --- dark screen, totally unresponsive to all external input --- it’s not actually dead, but hung in a software loop.
If the Nook had a true power-off switch, you could depower the hardware, and do a cold boot. That would kill the software loop, and the system would start from scratch, rebooting normally.
But without a true power-off switch, there’s no way to stop the loop, which will run --- conceivably many weeks --- before the Nook battery runs flat. Even then, a slow decline of battery power may allow the Nook to suspend itself --- in the loop --- meaning that when you recharge, the loop resumes looping, and you still have a dead nook.
But you can force a fast battery shutdown.
Wrap your nook in airtight plastic --- a 1gal freezer bag is about perfect. Squeeze out as much air as possible. Put the Nook into your refrigerator for 3-4 hours. The cold will cause the battery to lose charge very quickly.
After 3-4 hours, remove the Nook from the fridge, but leave it in the sealed plastic. Place it someplace at normal room temperature, where air can circulate freely around the Nook. (A cookie sheet or something similar is great.)
The plastic will ensure that any condensation that happens will happen harmlessly on the OUTSIDE of the bag, where it can’t hurt the Nook.
Wait until the plastic is dry and the Nook feels room temperature.
Remove the Nook. Recharge for 15 minutes. This will put back just enough charge to get your Nook bootable, without resurrecting any suspended processes, if any.
Turn on (leaving the nook plugged in). With luck, your Nook will now do a normal power-on full boot. Finish recharging normally.
I’ve done this four times on my Nook tablet. Works like a charm each time.
(I know this tip sounds sketchy, but it’s real. Google me, Fred Langa, if you wish: I’ve been a professional technology writer for 30 years. Of course, your mileage may vary; I can make no guarantees that this will always work. But the logic is sound, and it's worked for me.)
For me, pressing power and volume+ together for a few seconds (forcing the device to power down, I think) usually does the trick. Not sure how the battery would like the fridge method...

Chilling (not freezing) the battery has no long-lasting effect. Many MFGs actually recommend storing uninstalled batteries in a fridge.
Wouldn't it be a lot faster to just open the case and unplug the battery?

The issue most people have isn't a software boot loop problem. Dead devices are usually caused from not understanding how to flash ROMs. Deleted internal partitions and such. It's always essential to learn exactly what you need to do before you do it.

Yes, I agree, most bricks are the result of a bad flash. However, that is not always the case.
I have a Nook Tab that I rooted way back in 2011 with the NookZergy method. It is my daughter and wife's tablet, so I did not do anything else. I only rooted so I could put Amazon App Store and the Play Store on it instead of buying over-priced apps through the B&N Store.
After a number of months the power button stopped working completely. I thought it was a hardware failure, so I added an on-screen re-boot button widget.
A few days ago, the unit appeared to be off, yet I could not get it to turn on via that "normal" ways (plugging it in and letting is charge for a bit had always resurrected it in the past). After reading this thread, I opened up the unit, unplugged the battery cable, waited 5 minutes or so, and plugged it back in. The Nook booted right up on its own...
The point of the OP was to completely drain the battery to give an opportunity for a hard re-boot. I was just making a point that, instead of taking hours to do this, it can be done in a matter of minutes if you have a t-10 driver bit...
There is an easier method .
JUST HOLD THE POWER BUTTON FOR 30 - 60 SECONDS .
holding for few seconds will tell OS . Holding for >30s will shutdown by force . No need of volume button,etc.
End of story .
Do not follow OP instructions . Crazy method . Dangerous . If put in a freezer there will be condensation for sure (even a little air trapped inside cover will condense), not to mention potenial cracks or solder troubles inside due to thermal contraction. As a last resort if all else fails maybe.
When my screen went blank , I connected via USB and used ADB to reboot it . But then I learnt to just hold Power button for a long time.

You should go back and re-read my post. My power button doesn't do anything... I have used ADB reboot when the unit was locked up with the screen on... I never thought to try it with the screen off. It is probably faster for me to open the back and pull the battery cable than it is for me to refresh my memory on ADB anyway!

My friend that I bought the Asus prime for, asked me if I could take a look at his prime.
Here is the screnario:
Listening to radio station app, screen went to sleep while the radio was still playing and he tried holding the power button down and nothing worked to reboot or wake up the prime. The Prime was left playing to drain down the battery. It has all its recent updates (.15), not rooted, and not unlocked. When I looked at it, I charged it up, I can see the light and turned green to full battery status. I can feel the prime vibrate as I hold the power button, I tried volume + power hold, tried the hard reset with the paper clip hearing the click next to the sd card slot holding it for 10-30 seconds. The laptop can see the folder in the prime as i hold the power button and also disconnects when i power down. ordered 12-28 from best buy so the return window has expired and its a BC0K serial number.
Anybody find a solution with a black screen prime that just vibrates and can be seen on the laptop before I send it for an RMA?
Was there any shock to the device? A small bump or anything, it sounds like the ribbon cable for the screen has become disconnected, there are some reports of this on the forums.

This + have you went into recovery?
maybe try draining the battery again then charging up. ive seen a few post issue like this. if screen connection didn't break, then letting it drain again and charging up might fix it. good luck!
Actually, the prime was already drained maybe a total of 3 times. There was no shock to the device as it was working with the radio app on and when it was being listened to while it was on the bed, the screen went into sleep and could not wake up no matter what button was being pushed so the prime was left to drain its battery. My friend didnt know how to reboot, so he decided to left the battery to drain. Could the radio playing + sleep of death + battery drainage caused the permanent screen sleep? Too bad I dont have the micro hdmi connector to see if i can isolate the screen as the problem.
yup the micro hdmi would help a lot probably. But if your PC recognizes it I suggest you back up data that you need then try to do a blind factory reset so you can get rid of any non oem app installed including that radio app if any of them is whats causing the screen not to turn on.
1. Hold volume down then press and hold power.
2. When you feel it vibrate (this could take up to 10 seconds if the tablet was already on) wait another 5 seconds and then release both buttons.
3. After you release wait another 5 seconds (dont wait too long here or it will reboot on its own if you dont select anything after about 10 seconds) then press volume down 1 time and volume up 2 times.
4. The tablet will factory wipe and after another 10 seconds it will reboot.
If the tablet still wont turn on then you got another issue and that isnt caused by the radio app or any other app.
Didnt work. It just vibrated and the screened stayed black... Im wrapping this puppy up and bringing shipping it to the repair center. Thanks anyways.

My Prime also has the basic problem. I use it daily for about 3 to 4 hours, reading replying to e-mails and web browsing. While I was reading, the volume started going up on its own and I noticed that even after I put in standby mode, the battery discharged so I shut it down completely.
After that I could not turn it on. When I hold down the power button it vibrates bit the screen does not come on even after I fully charged till the led turns green.

Had to RMA back to Asus for them to fix the display and it took about a week. Warranty covered it, but if you do RMA ask them to ship you a shipping label. You shouldnt have to pay for shipping it to them for a manufacturer defect. And take pics and videos of the tablet and packing for your safety. They just need the tablet and nothing else. Good luck

I've had my TF201 since March 30th. Been using it for 1 week and it suddenly went dead (nothing on the screen, no vibration if I held the power button down). Tried everything I could find on the forums, it didn't work so I sent it to repairs (not immediately, cuz I had more important stuff to do). They kept it for almost 3 weeks, got it back this last Monday (May 21st) and... it died out on me again yesterday night (after just 3 days of use, congratulations ASUS technicians!). I was simply browsing and I clicked on the icon to increase the luminosity to the maximum supported (IPS+, I was charging it at the time) and the screen suddently went black. Like "nothing visible on it" black.
After that, I tried numerous times to reset it (including the volume+power down, according to the indications in this thread) - all I could get from it was the vibration as if it starts. Nothing else popping up on the screen. I plugged it this morning into my computer and it got somehow recognized, cuz my W7 tried installing drivers for it (even tho it had recognized the tablet again after it came from repairs and I already had drivers for it installed) but failed with the error "APX - no driver found".
I've had enough. Two months already and only one week and half of actual use. It's pathetic, ASUS needs to be taught a lesson, so I'm calling Consumer Protection in my country and the European Consumer Protection Comission. All the forums that I've surfed are filled with reports of broken units and ASUS will just tell you "if you have a valid warranty we'll repair it for free". I DON'T ****ING NEED regular repairs every 2 weeks!!! I need a functional tablet that I can use or give me my money back!

I had a user that suffered the blank screen.
When you think it's presumably on. Try a paperclip to the reset hole on the left side. His came back up at that point and hasn't done it again since.
Never had this happen on mine.

I helped a friend of mine root his NT awhile back, and it was working fine for months. I showed him CM7 running off of the SD card and he liked it, so I set it up for him on Friday. I did a factory restore on the NT, and he reentered his BN account info. I then booted off the SD card and everything was working fine as I could tell.
He brought it to me this morning and it won't charge. The "n" is always green when plugged up to the wall and it never goes orange to indicate it is charging. But when I attempt to power it on, it is always displaying the low power message and says to plug in the charger.
What I have tried:
-I removed the SD card, and it still won't charge... (not that it would matter).
-I have 3 chargers and my own NT. When I plug a charger up to my NT it works fine and the "n" goes to orange. But when I plug the same charger into my friends NT, the "n" is green and I can't get past the low batter warning.
-I have had my friends NT connected to a wall charger for about 3 hours this morning and I still can't get it to boot.
Any ideas on what might be wrong and how to fix it?

I tried, removing and reinserting the SD card and also holding power for 20 seconds. I finally was able to hold down the power and the N button down for about 20 seconds. This did the trick. It showed that the battery was too low to turn on. After about 10 minutes, it booted.
Hmm, I get the battery is too low to power on every time I hold down the power button and the "n" is always green on the charger.
strandedinar, did you have the power cord hooked up when you held the power button and "n" button down for 20 seconds?
So connecting the STOCK charger and the STOCK cable and leaving it alone for an hour or so isn't doing the trick? That's really the most that many of us have had to do... No "n" button needed either.

Yes. The nook was plugged in and the "n" was green. The Nook wouldn't power on - My wife was convinced it was my fault for rooting it...
I left it plugged in like that for 20 minutes, but nothing happened when I tried to start it. The charging light was green. I finally tried the power + N button trick and then I received the notice that the power was too low to turn on. This was the first time I received this message. After this, the color of the charging light changed from green to red/orange and I could tell that it was receiving the charge. After 10-15, it power on and has worked normally since.
I tried every thing I could think of and google and nothing worked. I took it to BandN yesterday. They thought it was a typical issue that they see a lot of, but after 3 folks at the store couldn't figure it out, they called 1800 support. Support said it was a bad usb port and swapped it out for a refurbished model.
I still think I could have fixed it, but after a couple of days my friend was getting antsy for it.

How did you do that? I was trying to hold the buttons and never got anything.
My NT has no juice to boot, but when I plug in a power cord (stock), plugged into stock power charger, it tries to boot up. Power indicator does turn orange, but then it runs out of power once it starts booting and turns off. After a few second it turns back on, and repeats same cycle again. It never boots to the point where it can actually sleep, seems that boot-up process takes more energy than charges could give it.
Try charging it from your computer. Just as suggestion not sure if it will help.

Hello Galets, did you manage to finally charge your Nook? I have the same problem as you have - when stock cable and charger are plugged in - device tries to boot and screen shows up but due to lack of power in accum it turns off and in a few seconds the cycle repeats.
I hardly understand - how it is possible that having mains power plugged it - there is not enough energy to charge and do other necessary things...

UPDATE: problem solved. In order to solve it, I had to disassemble the tablet and unplug the screen cord, then I put the power cable in, battery charged up for about an hour or so, then I plugged screen cord back in and turned it on without a problem. The down side of early charge attempts is that tablet decided that I had 10 failed boots and it reset my previously rooted device. Now I have fresh and clean stock 1.4.2 version.

how did you unplug the screen cord? I've looked up how to take apart the nook, but I'm not sure which one would the the screen cord. Did you follow a tutorial somewhere, or was it easy to figure out once you opened it up?

I did not really follow the guide. I was looking for first two bolts to unscrew. The rest was quite simple but challenging - i don't usually disassemble things.
I did not pull out any of the buttons or battery from where they are and simply unplugged their connectors too - you will see 3 small foam rubber black box-like pieces (in step 9 they only marked one of them). There are plastic connectors under foam rubber pieces.
Be careful not to short-circuit anything with metallic tools.
On the attached image I marked the screen connector. I unplugged it by gently hooking it with two small screwdrivers. When putting it back I gently pressed it until I heard a click. And make sure those small slots on connector match with corresponding ones on motherboard.
Also, when finishing assembly I ran into a small problem with corner flap (which covers sdcard) - it did not want to smoothly slide in and out. So, pull it off completely and after putting plastic cover in place and screwing last two bolts, put it back - some small help of small screwdriver will be needed.

thanks, looks cool. I've never taken anything apart before and I'm afraid of short circuiting something. I think I might try this.
I've installed DRH JB 4.1 successfully 2 months ago. It has been running nicely since then. Today I decided to upgrade the ADW launcher EX. It all went fine.
I left the tablet on the table. A few minutes later, I came back to find it remains off. I tried to press power button for a few seconds, w/ or w/o holding + or - down. Nothing happens. Plug in the power, nothing.
I connect it to my PC (did that as a step to install DRH JB 4.1). But nothing happens either.
What can I do now? Is it completely dead?

I've cracked open the back and press the reset the button. It boots up but won't respond to touch screen, soft button or hard buttons. I reset it a few times and about to give up. Then I put the back cover half-on (not snapped), it somehow worked. It responds to hard button, soft buttons and touch screen.
I felt lucky but want to try more. So I reboot it. Now, it only respond to the hard buttons, but not soft buttons or touch screen. Feeling I no longer need the reset the button, I snapped the back cover on. Now it goes dead again.
Has anyone seen this before? Any loose end?

I just had this happen to my tablet today. Installed CWM 5.0.5 (for BL 1.2), installed the new Paranoid Android ROM played with it for a few minutes, went back to install market, which worked fine, logged in to start downloading apps. Played some angry birds, exited, admired the tab for a few seconds, turned off the screen, and then set it down. plugged in to charger. unlocked screen, made sure apps downloaded, turned off screen again, set down.
10 minutes later, picked it up, tried turning on the screen and all I got was black. will not respond to any button presses or anything I do. I would rather not crack open the case as I just purchased it, but will do so if that is the only thing aside from sending it in for repair.
Hope someone has some advice or help. Did search the forums for other ideas on what to do, but it seems like the only way to make it wake up is the hard reset. Someone please prove me wrong! :silly:

What you are having is a well known SOD that is caused by the Kernel we are using for right now. There are other options besides cracking the case and pressing the internal reset button. You can let the device drain its battery on its own. The best way I know of is to connect something that charges USB to the tablet so that the tablets power will die a lot quicker, MP3 player, Cell Phone or anything that can use a good charging up would be the quickest route. Then after plugging in almost everything and making sure that the battery is fully drained on the G tablet press and hold down the power button just to be safe and discharge what ever is left. Charge the Gtablet fully from red to green and then boot it back up and all will be good. Its a long process to take, but if you don't wish to open it up and drill the hole this is the alternative way of doing so.

Yup. That's most likely it. Loose ends. Check the cables going to the digitizer and the soft buttons.

I decided to open gTablet again. This time, things just come back to normal. I checked every wire and connector visible, but can't find anything loose. I am afraid to snap the back cover back so I am leaving it loose and put it back to the case. My plan is to drill a hole on the back cover later to get access to the reset button. But I doubt whether that will really help.
I am checking the pictures against mine. All looks normal. Checked every visible wire and connector. Nothing seems to be loose.

The symptoms point to a hardware problem. A visual inspection might not be enough.
Try pulling all the relevant cables out completely (at both ends), then plugging them back in again.
Then do a "Key Test" in CWM (under "advanced"). Post the key codes along with the keys pressed.
If all the keys don't show up, then get me a dmesg output:

You should also check that the cables don't have any breaks in them (flex the cable while doing the Key Test) or have their insulation stripped somewhere. This latter has caused some problems before.
I tried to tighten all the connectors.
All keys passed the test.
Keeping my fingers crossed now.
So I put my prime on my bed (it was on and working but closed in its dock) and proceeded to move my sheets to get in bed. The amount of static electricity it created was amazing (its been very cold and dry here) I didn't really think anything of it. I've shocked my prime touching it many times, however its completely dead. I have tried everything I could find in any post but it basically come down to this.

i'm pretty sure i'm screwed but just looking for anything that might help.

This may or may not help but I had it once where my prime would not turn back on.
I took it out of the dock and plugged the power cable directly into the tablet and then held the power button and it powered up with full charge in it.
Yours does sound like a short issue but it's worth a go.

Has anyone ever seen one that wouldn't vibrate before?
My Samsung Galaxy SIII smart phone has only recently been having issues. My phone will turn on, will be charged and function as normal - ie, no performance issues at all when the phone is actually on. But sometimes, my phone will randomly shut off with no prompt or message. Sometimes it will attempt to turn back on itself, other times I need to press or even hold the power button to turn it on.
The real problem is when it boots, it SOMETIMES (3/5 times average) will begin to boot, then the screen goes black again - ie, the Samsung logo will show up upon vibrating, then shut off or reboot and try again (this can sometimes happen singularly or in tandem). Other times, it will boot as normal, sometimes working normally, other times just randomly doing the abrupt shut down, and the cycle starts over.
I've tried taking the battery out, rebooting it, booting to safe mode, removing battery + keeping it out for ~10 minutes to discharge, etc. My phone isn't up to date, as my phone is rooted. However, I haven't modified my phone or done anything to it in a long time, and this has only has begun happening recently. My current firmware is rooted stock Android 4.2. Are there any other solutions besides formatting my phone? I cannot send it in/get it replaced by my provider as my warranty has expired. Thank you. :angel:
Go to the Play Store and download emmc brickbug check.
Get that diagnosed.
If it's good i suggest you do a full wipe and update it to the latest samsung 4.3 update.

Well you better get up to date, best to start with a factory reset and the latest stock rom first.
I guess you're running an unstable leaked 4.2.2 firmware,so I would suggest you to install stable 4.3 firmware.
Maybe your power button got stuck..
To find out, push your power button and keep hold it even the "samsung galaxy s III GT-I9300" appear.
Do you experience the same thing or not.

I found a fix for my S3 which was doing EXACTLY what many of you are describing. I will get to the fix and it will sound ridiculous, but it worked for me and for the other people responding to the posted fix. ***** Hint: my problem was the power button and the fix was free and easy though may require you to be pissed at your phone as I was at the time.
Before getting to what fixed my phone. It seems like every one with a Samsung phone Sh*tting out in this manner should go through the well-conceived sequence I post below in the link. That guy though through the problem and made a great help list even though I found myself with a phone that was a mess even after all of those steps. My phone just vibrated when I tried to start it or maybe it began to show a graphic screen of the boot process before it went to black again and just vibrated. I am stuck with 4 more months of verizon contract so I was desperate and unahppy to say the least. I tried at least 50 time to boot my phone yesterday and went to a verizon store they were no help as expected especially when they saw a boot screen image that they did not recognize... I was one of those rooting creeps that they are not obligated to help...

A stuck or malfunctioning power button can cause... getting random reboots, lack of starting, lack of posting, getting stuck at various screens in the boot process and then going to a black screen which may just accompany a vibrating phone or a seemingly dead phone. Our problem is the power button being "stuck" underneath/inside of the janky, crappy little clip on power button that you are actually pushing in on your phone.
see this youtube video. In other words the thing you push is only pushing something else inside. I took my power button out (it clips in) cleaned out the cavity by blowing and with a toothpick and I was fixed!

I was pissed at my phone so where the guy in the above youtube video says something like tapping his nail (finger nail) into the power button or whatever I was pretty aggressive and crammed my thumbnail down the sides of the power button until the janky little piece of crap actually popped out revealing itself as a clip kind of a thing. I then blew the hell out of the hole with all of the breath I could muster and took a toothpick and depressed the actual power button several times and "cleaned out" and cleared out any hair or gunk (really did not see any) that might have been in the socket. I put my power button back in (just clips in by itself if you put it in the socket the right way and push down) and I have had NO PROBLEMS since. Start with the first link I posted but be wary of the clearing Cache part unless you no what you are doing ahead of time. I had just done a factory reset and total wipe with TWRP before installing a new ROM so I did not have anything to lose. You might... I don't know enough about what resides in "cache" to advise you. Then if you are still in trouble listen to the second post which is a video. I actually crammed my thumbnail down into the power button cavity on both the top and bottom (the long axis) of the button aggressively enough that the visible button popped out. Then I did my blowing and cleaning, etc... crammed the visible button back int - which clips into place and I have been stoked since. Hope it works for you if not, sorry!
*As a side note, I sort of assumed that the problem with my phone (and I bet yours) has something to do with power: either getting to the right place in the phone from the battery or the power chord OR the f*ing power button on our cheap, janky plastic yet expensive Samsung phones might be a problem because before the weird random reboots and not booting began the power off dialog (like when you hold the power button down long enough and you get the "reboot" "power down" "airplane mode" menu kept coming up while I was surfing watching youtube or even talking. I figured it was time to install another ROM, did so twice and still had the same issues. I reflashed recoveries back and forth from TWRP to the other one several times too. Nothing worked until I cleaned out the power button. Go figure.

I tried a similar approach and it looks like it actually worked. I just took the plastic cover of and removed he 10 little screws and played around with the plastic thingy that depresses the power button. I don't know what exactly fixed it but is seems to work.
So you might not have to remove your power button but instead just play around with it first and see if you can't get it to function properly again.

I have a problem with my S3 since about a week now. First it was a standard S3 with stock ROM and not rooted. The phone would turn itself of 3 - 5 times during daytime and also at night when charging.
What I tried:
- Clearing battery connections
- Cleaning power button
But finally I think it's not a hardware problem. Loose contacts, battery connections or a power button problem would probably cause more shut downs when I was using it. But in my case it's the opposite: it always shuts down when I am *not* using it.
So I rooted the phone and flashed a custom ROM on it: [ROM] [4.4.4] [CyanogenMod] [GCC 4.8] [Excellent] [31/12/14] ArchiDroid V3.0.2
That was succesfull, but after that I still had the same problem.
When do I have this problem: as stated: always when I am *not* using the phone. It's lying on my desk or next to my bed, charging and no program is running.
When I don't have the problem: when some program is running on the foreground, at night during charging if I keep the clock on the foreground (daydreaming), when I have waze running (in my car) etc.
I have the impression the device only shuts itself down when in deep sleep mode.
I also tested if it was a case of Deep Sleep of Death, but when the phone is shut down, I can not text to it, the LED does not light up.
I can boot the phone by pressing the power button once for about 8 seconds, so that seems a normal boot and not a reboot.
Any suggestions on what I could test? Or how I can find out what the problem is?

Well it started to get worse every day, so we tried factory reset once more and after that, the phone just died. (only colored rubbish is shown on the screen) ...
Never ever buying Samsung again. Piece of crap ...
Anyway we had chance to buy LG G2 on the sale. I know it's quite old, but the price was perfect and it's many times better than S3. :good:
