Should work as it is with Nightelf's RC2, right? [pretty sure, it would, but still]
There's no reason why not, but if you've nightelf kernel you have recovery to flash the zip for root, which is certainly quicker.

I already have the official ICS kernel which I flashed yesterday ! Will that work with this zip file ??

Ok so we know we can root with flashing or hotbooting a custom kernel, this is for those pesky network crippled handsets with no fastboot.
prerequisits
working rom with clockwork mod
flashtool
Download This folder
http://min.us/mq5bOi0IX
extract the ics nandroid to your sd card (sdcard/clockworkmod/backup)
place the ftf in flashtool/firmwares on your pc
reboot to recovery and restore the nandroid, this will wipe your data, use advanced restore, system only if you wish to preserve, although its better practice to wipe data especially in version jumps.
when complete power off the phone, read that again power of the phone, do not reboot you will get a boot loop.
now open flashtool on your pc, click the lightning symbol select flashmode, select the ftf for ics kernel, follow the instructions on screen to flash the kernel.
all done you should now boot to a prerooted ics.

I have reverted back to .42 after flashed it to Sony Nordic ICS.
I have one question, when you say "extract ICS nandroid to sdcard", from where can I get nandroid backup? I never have one... (I am noob on nandroid stuff, but know CWM recovery )
I downloaded K15, restored on .42 with recovery... applied Neo V patch, switched off from recovery, started Flashtool with ICS kernel & flashed it immediately.
But when I restart, it does not boot beyoned "Sony" logo, I waited for 10-15 min.
My first suspect is K15 does not support "stock kernel", can anybody know any ROM compatible with "Stock Kernel" of Sony??
Thanks!
Yes the nandroid (a nandroid is just s backup imagee taken with cwm, there is a zip that include one in the folder I posted)is the official ics, just already rooted. The ftf is just the stock ics kernel.
As for the ka13 question that's more suited to his thread , although the beta kernels work on official I haven't tried the other way around but they should be compatible.

Also, by my experience I would advise you to update the OP with clear instructions like...

I there
Just bought brand new xperia ray (unbranded actually )
I unlocked it successfully using THIS METHOD, then I rooted it with DooMLoRD v4 tool, then I installed the CWM and BusyBox using SE Extreme Tweak Installer v1.8.
Since then, all was okay, stock rom was functionnal and I was able to boot on the recovery, then I made a factory reset under CMW (wipe cache/data) and installed MIUI GB.
Tried to reboot but got stuck on the Sony Ericsson logo for minutes...
So I unplugged the battery and tried to boot in recovery with no success...
Did I miss something ? I am not too worried, I guess there is a way to fix this problem, I'll accept your advices
Did u try any other Rom or just the MIUI?
Did u make a backup of your Stock rom? Can you enter fastboot mode? Try to flash a kernel with cwm. Or try flashing the ICS beta. Or... i have no more ideas
If yes, did u try to restore the stock rom?
Did you flash the kernel to go with the rom?

Lol yeah. The reason I said that was because he said it was stuck at Sony Ericsson logo, and I'm not sure if MIUI roms run on Sony Ericsson kernel?
Does it? :-/

Every rom i tried came with it's own kernel. Do no realy like Miui so i did no try that one.
Anyway if the kernel is the problem the a fastboot flash correct boot.img should fix the problem.
He should be able to enter CWM using the current kernel right?

MIUI kernels don't usually have the SE logo, so I guess OP didn't flash the kernel that came with the ROM.
Ho yeah, I did not flash any kernel, I think this is the point here...
I thought kernel would be included in the rom image (it's the case on HTC devices)
I am new to sony underground, seems a lil' more complicated, I'll get used to it...
Anyways, as I can't boot into recovery anymore, what can I do to flash the kernel ?
Edit : Of course I did a full backup in CWM before flashing, but i can't use it :/
You have to install flashtool from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351324
Then you enter fastboot mode: turn off your phone then hold the vol up button and insert the USB cable. You should see the blue led. this means you are in fastboot mode.
In the installation dir of Flashtool you'll have a x10flasher_lib folder. This is were the fastboot.exe file is.
The easy way is to copy the kernel(usualy a boot.img file) to this folder, then open a command prompt window and flash the kernel:
fastboot flash boot boot.img if the kernel has a different name then change the boot.img.
Done.
Anyway, if something is wrong someone please correct me.
Thank you.

Hello everyone..
Im using Clean V5 found here: Great rom and pretty fast!
But im having issues with the phone constantly rebooting after flashing V6.
I downloaded the zip, copied it to the sdcard, rebooted phone into recoverymode, made a backup. Choosed custom zip had it flashed and after i made a full wipe and rebooted.
It gets stuck at the blinking marker, and after awhile it reboots and loops.
Note, i can go back into recoverymode and reset.

Love your dedication of helping
I just found a clean backup on my computer Ill restore and see what firmware it is and try V6 this weekend.
Edit:
The backup I had didnt have matching MD5 for some reasons but I managed to use SEUS and phone was restored to original firmware
I just flashed V6 and I do have compatible firmware "C.0.0" and holy cow it works!
Maybe the term 'firmware' is confusing. Because V6 -ROM- contains a dualtouch module that only works with the 2.1.1.C.0.0 -KERNEL- , it can cause problems.
There's a link in the first post of the rom thread (read carefully) to the right kernel (.ftf file) which you can flash using flashtool.
Sorry I didn't see this before, since V6 I'm just using the phone ;-)

yeah thanks just need to register... (not pay) i use your 2.3.4 actually.. it give me ability to upgrade in .62 without loosing root... and now "bonus" PCC ask me to upgrade ICS centraleurope version... just all i need with a downgrade :d
Hi,
I have a xperia neo....with rooted stock firmware .62 and unlocked bootloader (testpoint method)...I have taken a nandroid backup of it
I just wanted to try out ics...so planning to update using PCcompanion
Before updating...i just want to know
1. whether it's possible to downgrade to gb through cwm nandroid restore? Do I need to flash the kernel for .62 after the nandroid restore ?
2. will root access be restored after the downgrade? Since .62 is cannot be rooted, I'll have to flash .42 to get root access
I don't want to start restoring all the installed apps...hence thinking of using nandroid backup against flashtool
heres a video on how to :
SIMPLEST WAY TO DOWNGRADE TO 2.3.4 factory firmware
...Hi, hope i can help you after i spent myself days looking to root or flash my device, with no luck. There is just 3 simple steps to follow and you are done. Trust me its working fine:
1. Go To: (http thing) i cant link as new user...//androidadvices.com/downgrade-sony-xperia-arc-official-gingerbread-23-firmware/2/ and download 2 files (flashtool and Xperia Arc S firmware package... works for xperia arc, arc s, pro, etc). This is the Gingerbread 2.3.4
2. Unzip, install and start (as admin) Flashtool, then COPY XPERIA ARC S FIRMWARE PACK (is a .ftf file) INTO Installed Flashtool, FIRMWARE Folder (PASTE inside), START FLASH, choose FLASHMODE, follow on screen steps.
P.S. When restart your phone in FLASHMODE: With the phone turned off, press and HOLD BACK button, while connect USB, next seconds, you'll get the GREEN Light(phone) and flashing begins.
3. ENJOY your new installed GINGERBREAD 2.3.4 Firmware
P.S. ...NO ROOT REQUIRED... ...and yes, i know there are more than 3 steps... so? still works great. GOOD LUCK

Rooting shouldn't just cause your phone not to boot. How did you root? Which rom did you try to flash?? And you cannot use PC Companion or SEUS after unlocking bootloader. For now, to get your mobile into a working condition, flash a stock ftf file using flashtool. If you don't know how to do that, then check the general section or this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2067008

Hi zig , firstly I will not suggest u to downgrade ur phone secondly do one thing to make ur phone processing faster.... Go to settings>apps>all> click the app and on the top right u will see an option ''disable'' , disable the preinstalled apps which u don't use like ''Google +,email, gmail, talk,fb,office suite, top contacts, retail demo, recommender, maps ,Google chrome, exchange services'' restart ur phone and then use..... Let me know how is it working.

I know about the update you mentioned, but there seems to be even more new then that 6.1.1.b1.100. In any case how can i upgrade to those, be it new or older firmware? To get a real lag reduction and battery drain issue, I suggest you to root atleast (without unlocking your boot loader which does not void your warranty).
For that you need flashtools from there
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1933985
However, B.1.100 is slightly better than the previous version
So to try that, flash it with flashtools, you can find the download link here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974430
You do not require root to flash Sony stock ROMs.
Another better alternative is to flash custom ROMs for locked bootloader,
My personal suggest, go for SlimCM ROM, pretty stable and snappier.

So in essence i can flash newest stock B.1.100 without root, and not losing the waranty (subquestion only unlocking the bootloader voids waranty, but root no? I am asking this cos i do seem to remember but i might be wrong that root can also void it, and i wanna be sure . But if i decide to go for custom ROM which you suggested do i need root for that? With root i can remove loads of stuff which i cannot do now, so thats why the lag is much lesser?

Yes you can attain root access without unlocking your boot loader.
Use flashtool method or Bin4ry's method.
Again yes, you can flash SONY STOCK fw using flashtools (without root or unlocking) in flashmode (just keep in mind to "exclude TA")
Once you are rooted you can install apps such as greenify that really helps to last the battery longer.
Also you could remove the bloatware and other useless apps.
Or you even you can make choices to install Custom ROMs for locked bootloaders. Just check the development section.
This is my personal suggest: SlimCM ROM.
Though its CM9
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2143750
See the instructions for locked boot loaders.

To root fw C.1.0 or any later versions, you need to
-flash the kernel alone of B.1.0.
-follow root procedure by flashtool or Bin4ry method.
-Then flash back the corresponding kernel of the ROM.
Done

Ty for all the suggestions. I rly appreciate it. Think i will go for what u suggested first, slimCM. I checked it and it looks nice.. Althou some things are not so clear to me. In both instructions, for slimCM and in patch for locked bootloader it says wipe data or factory reset in recovery. What is recovery? And it also mentions to do the backup of my current ROM. How shall i do that. Wipe data and factory reset means all data gone from phone so i should backup at least photos, music and sms-es to my pc or some app.

That's where you can find recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2020897
CWM recovery is required to flash custom ROMs or MODs etc.
You can find the wipe data, cache options in the recovery menu. Just back up your contacts, messages and things.
Nothing from SD card will be lost.
Do carefully patch the ROM as per the instructions to make it into locked bootloader.
Copy that zip file in SD card and enter CWM recovery
-flash ROM
Done !

heyyy
U can root ur device with out touching bootloader dats pretty easier....
but remember after rooting u need to install cwm recovery bcz its used to flash custom roms and rem u can also take take backup of ur entire rom
if anything goes wrong during flashing custom u can easily restore ur device to normal..... by using back up....
flash b.1.10 rom bcz it can be easily rooted by using flashtool......
So finally the process is root first, second recovery and finally flashing rom of ur choice.....
There are so many ROMS in dev section for locked bootloader......
njoyyyyyyyyy............
I ll attach CWM recovery files download and extract.... In the extract folder double click install(.bat file) make sure device connected with debugging mode on..... accept all superuser request on device........aft rooting u ll get super user app in apptry
PM if any difficulty

Hello. This is my first post here so forgive me if i done or post it wrong.
In short i have updated phone from gb 6.0.B.1.564 to Ics 6.1.1.C.1.0 via pcc and it is from then acting very poorly in comparison to before, very laggy and slow in general. What id like to know now is what is best to do? I have heard there is some new latest firmware released for xu ics, is it possible for me to get that, and is it improved a bit performance? If nothing, can someone pls point me how to downgrade back to gb, or maybe suggest something else? Just so you know, my phone is not rooted and it has locked bootloader.
Thank you all in advance

So i have backed up all the data (music, photos etc) on the pc. Tomorrow i will get on doing what you guys suggested. So to get it all confirmed, first do the root with flashtool, checkin superuser and rootme, and then i will be rooted. Then cwm recovery install, then applying the patch for locked bootloader for slimCM ROM, then i go back in cwm, make backup of current ROM and then wipe data, and then flash the rom.. That be the order? Is there any thing i should take special care of?

I had a little problems. It wouldnt let me install the flashtool drivers. Probably cos i was doing it on laptop on win8. Will try it at home on win7.

Remember install flashtool while your anti-virus is disable...!
Sent from my ST25i using xda app-developers app
I did that. But what i wanted to say i get error during the instalation of drivers. Flashtool alone was installed corectly.

It will be lot better if you try it with Win 7 as Win 8 + Flashtool drivers don't go well together as 8 allows only signed drivers to get installed.
Though there's a thread on how to install Flashtool drivers on win 8.

Hello all. I managed to install drivers. The fix for win8 worked. I started root in flashtool, done all that i was told to but it isnt rooted. Log says Root hack did not work. Any ideas? Cheers again for all the help

Here's the Rooting Process for you.
This Rooting guide applies to all FW versions above B.1.10. (i.e. B.1.54/C.1.0/B.1.75/B.1.189/B.1.100)
