Okay, so this is one of those Ace mysteries I can't get rid of. In the DCIM/.thumbnails folder were 20K random thumbnails for some reason. They were even repeated over and over and were even from pics I didn't even have anymore. And now I checked the folder again and found 13K thumbnails AGAIN of the SAME thing. The phone just froze as soon as I tried to open the folder or delete the whole thing so I had to do it through my pc.
Can someone tell me how to solve this, or why it happens? Every time I do a scan for a file on my SD, the phone just stays on that folder scanning all those things. I feel bad for my Ace having to do so much useless work for no reason :/
The thumbnails are small previews of your big pictures lol , maybe they're needed because there's still an app that uses it
Ace-ing all tests.

Well, the only app that loads random thumbnails is quickpic. I don't even use the gallery.

So I just installed google+ on the phone and tried sharing a specific picture from my phone....
The picture posted ended up being a freaking screen shot of an ESPN bookmark!! WTF?
Has anybody had this problem or is it just a freak accident? I am a lil scared of using it now as there are some crazy ass photos on my phone and I definitely do not want to even accidentally post them.
Maybe I can just put them in a .file but isn't that where they found the ESPN bookmark?

Delete your /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails folder so that it rebuilds. You should be able to verify this is the problem by opening gallery and noticing that the thumbnail of the image you *wanted* to post opens the image of what was actually sent. After you delete that folder and open gallery things should be corrected. It just sounds like the thumbnails may have gotten mixed up.
If that wasn't the problem, we'll go from there.

Ah... this may have solved the problem. Should have thought about that first. It's been awhile since i cleared the thumbnails.
K.... Another issue.
I turned on instant upload to upload all my pics to Picasa.
It ONLY found my fxcamera folder.... I have like 5 folders with pics in them. Anybody know how Google+ instant upload scans the SD card for pics?
EDIT: Solved...
Google+ instant upload looks like it scans in order of folders and uploads the first folder it finds with pics in it... (First time the first folder it found with pics was FXcamera Folder) for most people it would be DCIM. For now I moved all my pics into that folder (DCIM) but I will take them all out once it's done uploading (4G kills it!)
Then from there on it will instant upload anything that goes into DCIM...
just a FYI
I think my phone is deleting pictures. I have been taking a lot atleast 300 this week and 10 videos. on a 2GB sd but shouldn't internal takeover?

I don't believe that the phone switches automatically. It might but it's never done it for me. Perhaps the sdcard is corrupt. Look for files in the lost+found directory.

You might also have another folder called found.000 but you might have to select Show Hidden Files/Folders to see them.

It should tell you when your storage card is running low on space.
So, this may or may not be the same problem I'm having, but I've noticed that my pics will disappear and reappear in no apparent fashion. really frustrating. i've used two diff memory cards, and it's like the phone deletes the most recent ones, then brings them back? WTF? Try to unmount the SD card in the system settings and see if they come back.

I didn't see any posts that you said pictures are actually missing, it seems you just think you would have filled your external..? You can try an app called file expert, choose "my files" then pictures, and it will find all the pictures on the phone.. or the app quickpic has an option to scan folders that have a .nomedia file in them, perhaps your pics are getting saved in a folder that doesn't show? Either way quickpic does a better job than gallery at finding all of your pics.
If you are thinking your sd card would be full from pictures, look at the size of your pictures files. At full resolution highest quality, I don't have any over 2 megs in size, so with an empty 2 gig sd card you would need to likely take over 1000 pictures to fill it up.
If you are sure you have lost pictures/videos that should be on your external, I would replace that sucker and take it as a lesson. Or save to internal, you aren't likely to lose those regardless..

Did you hit menu>show hidden?
That will show you the pics if they are being saved in a hidden non-scannable folder..
This forum is flooded with too much ICS issues. I've a problem apart from that. Recently I found in battery status that mediaserver is taking too much battery.
On an average my battery goes about 12 hrs with heavy use. recently I copied some 3gp and flv files in my 2gb card sizing about 500mb in total. after that my battery is lasting for only 7-8 hrs without any use! when I check battery status it shows 50-60% battery has been taken by mediaserver. to confirm my doubt I then deleted all the videos and recharged again. now media server only takes 2-5%!
strange,na?
Are you using ICS or Gb? Maybe the gallery application has something to do with it which is causing these unusually high drainage.
obviously strange, haven't seen such problem ever.

I'm still on GB. and yes i also think its related to gallery app because when I've these videos on my memory card then gallery takes minutes to load pics and viseos. most of the time it does not even show the pics and some time it shows thumbs of of pics that i've already deleted. first i thought as .flv file cant be played witout help of other app so system is trying to read .flv files and using battery. but it's not. even when there's only 3gp files then tha problems happed. i think a reset will help. but backing up everything is a pain

Oh! It's creating a loop in the media server when accessing the movies as you have mentioned. When the media server tries to read a file and if it fails, it reads it again and again. This is device specific bug bcoz this doesn't happen in aosp android. Update to ICS and see if anything improves or not.
I first saw this on my wife's S3 and now I have the same thing on my Note 2. Whenever I go into the Gallery app, it is so extremely slow. I thought it was building indexes or something, but my Thunderbolt wasn't this slow. I have searched around and can't find anything.
I do have images on an extSD card, but even before I put the card in the pics I took on camera were slow to come up. I can use other apps like quic pic but I don't think S-pen works with other apps.
Anyone else seen this?
EDIT: It appears the S-Pen works fine in quic pic. I was able to select and copy to clipboard just fine. I would still like to know why Gallery is so slow though.
hmm I'd call mine quite fast. I have 42 local pictures already and it that album and facebook ones instantly and when I click local, the pictures all pop right up instantly. Have you noticed reads/writes from your memory being slow with anything else?

My phone overall is very fast. It is just the gallery. The fact that I saw it on my wife's S3 made me wonder. I even moved her pics off of her extSD card and onto her internal memory. Then I reformatted her card. I also reformatted my card in the phone before putting the pics back on it. Quic Pic works like a champ, so I believe it has to be Gallery.
No issues here with opening gallery, pics taken from phone or photos on memory card. Also my s3 was fast.
Yep, mine too. I have a lot on my card, when i open the gallery it shows a bunch of gray squares that should be the folder names.it takes forever to show thumbnails for some reason. Never had this on my S3
I have 6000+ pictures separated into 50+ albums all stored on my 64gb xdhc and its fast. for an album of more than 600 pics, the gray boxes turn to thumbnails quick enough to keep up with my scrolling.
I'm in the same boat as the OP.... It takes quite a long time to load up my pictures in my gallery. Quite annoying...
use a ultra high speed sd card an it will help with gallery speed. i have a 64gb sandisk that reads 50mb/s...

I have had the same problem since owning the S3 and now the GN2. I have about 6gb of photos on my internal storage and a couple gb on my sd card.
I have been able to figure out that it's something with my home network. Try to turn off Wifi and then open Gallery on all 3 of my Sammy phones the gallery is instantly fast.
PS Someone also told me to disable Tag Buddy and Face Tag as well.
Motorola is similar yo this except that the moto gallery pinch room is choppy. Quick pic fixes. Its something about the ui that makes it drag along on the gallery. Hopefully they address it because my old gs2 didn't really have that issue.
Same issues with gallery sometimes
I've noticed some slowdown on the gallery but mostly when other apps try to access it.
Like if i try to look at the gallery from picsay or something.
I notice the camera folder shows up right away but it hangs on the other folders.
I have it showing all my facebook photos too. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.
And I have noticed its quite hit or miss. Sometimes its instant sometimes it hangs.
It is quite weird when the phone is so fast.
I would love to know what is causing it.

If it's looking for facebook albums, it could be data connection that's affecting the speed.

I haven't found a way. I went into facebook sync and unchecked "sync gallery" and changed the gallery sync interval to never, then went and cleared all data from the gallery but it went through and downloaded them all over again.
Did you try changing the sd speed? I switched from the default 128k to 2048 and my galleries load as fast as I can scroll

I too have this issue. It would be worth trying what LordRalh3 mentions. Dont know if this is going to help. I had several pictures on internal memory until I remembered to install my external 32gb card, it is slow both ways.
I had the same issue, and found that gallery was caching a ton of data. Over 2 gigs the first day! I cleared it, and again the next day it began caching data again. I have resorted to disabling the app, and I am in the process of wiping to see if that helps. I will let you know what happens.
Stock gallery is bull****. Better is quickpic i use it nearly 1 year
Wiping did not help. Gallery still as slow as molasses. I will report back on cached data. How would I go about changing the sd speed?
I just changed the sd speed to 2048. There was no difference. This is really annoying. I turned off syncing with picasa, facebook, google +. Im not sure what else could cause such a slow down.
Goodmorning
My girlfrien has an Honor 9 with firmware B153, everything stock.
After a while, and about 4000 photo taken, the gallery has become really sluggish and almost unusable.
when i take a new photo it's need around 4/5 second to show the preview. also deleting a photo cause the app freeze for several seconds.
i have already tried to delete cache for both camera and gallery apps, and delete the thumbnails folder into DICIM, but with no results
Anybody had esperienced the same issue?
Thanks

yes that will certainly solve the issue, i will do it.
I was only curious if there are other workaround, since it seems quite a big limit for the stock gallery app

I do not think it's a storage capacity problem but rather a memory problem.
All photos are loading.
Is she using a SD card of a slower type?
