I'm wanting to have the Android OS on my Desktop computer. For a media center, as the android market has HBO, Netflix, Showtime, ect. I have a Dell Vostro 410 Desktop Computer. How do I get started, I'm using a Ethernet in order to get internet. Cause the main purpose is for media.

But you will run into problems with those types of apps complaining about your device being rooted or otherwise unsupported. Also, since your device is not supported by Google, Google Play Store won't work.
Really you would be better sticking to a more supported Desktop OS.

I agree that it seems an unusual choice but you can get round the market restrictions using the patched version of play store app which is available in one of the forums here at xda I think.

There is android for computer try the liveCd Google it and burn it on a CD using roxio or Nero and you can boot android anytime you like

It has an option to make the system file read and write. So Root is usable, but I want to make a recovery on the computer, like I want to go into clockworkmod onto the computer.

Would it not be easier to use windows and the variety of free software for it to do so? You can hook pc up to tv and get a remote control so you could control pc with it, there are programs out there designed for such purposes, I used one years ago when I built a mame arcade cabinet that could also record tv and stream videos etc.
Get the x86 android release and if it does not work maybe try using windows as its unlikely android will be smooth enough on your pc because it won't have optimised drivers for your hardware.

I agree to others stating to use an actual computer OS. Have you looked into the wonderous works of Linux? There are endless builds out there. Plus with IE9 i know you can make custom shortcuts, like desktop icons, that when you launch them it will take you directly to netflix and log you in.

I suppose the simplest approach would be to set windows up so desktop icons can be opened with one click. Then if you had a remote control you could use it to start the different things you want by using it to click on saved desktop shortcuts. Elesbb is right that it is a solution you could try.
Alternatively you could try media server which does have a netflix plugin.

I have to agree. I think a windows box with a good media remote would be the best solution. That way it can be easily upgraded and drivers, drm, etc won't be an issue. Windows 8 is pretty touch oriented and might look nice as a media center.
That way when you want to upgrade hardware or OS you won't be stuck waiting for full driver support or patches and rewrites. I would also think it would be more powerful/feature-full for recording live TV etc.
Anything is possible though, and the Android x86 project would definitely be the place to start if you must go the Android route. Why not buy a high end Android tablet and run hdmi and then remote control that. I know that most peripherals exist in USB form, but I'm not sure how Android would handle, say, a USB TV tuner...

There is one problem with your request. The Netflix APK is specifically designed for ARM and not x86 and as of right now there are no known x86 Netflix ports. So, Netflix will not work.
While Android x86 is smooth its hit or miss on some machines. I am running ICS from a live boot usb drive on my old Toshiba A135 S4467. It is by far faster to surf the internet and check emails and such with Android than my Windows install. The volume however is extremely low and only works through headphones on my laptop. Auto rotate can be an issue.
I would strongly recommend looking into XBMC for Windows instead, it is a very highly regarded media centre software, and has plugins for most Internet content sources e.g. Netflix etc. Much more workable than an Android emu.
If you have $49 spare VIA have just announced a nice Android PC which might be of interest rather than try to make your current PC an Android one. It has 720p H264 video playback, comes pre installed with Gingerbread with 2 gigabytes internal memory and 512 mb ram.

Splashtop Streamer works really great for just remoting in and doing things. However, I wanted to see if anybody uses a different remote app. for playing games on their desktop/laptops?
I wanted to try Minecraft and it works really well, the arrow keys work but when I try to use the mouse, the pointer uses the pointer on the tablet and not in Windows. Splashtop doesn't really have a lot of features, anybody have any experience with a different app. that allows the pointer to be used better in windows?
Id be interested to hear from what other people are running as well. I'll be using my prime to connect to my work pc so I can do estimates on the go.

Because that has about 5% of the features of the actual Minecraft game. Also, my cousins run a server and you can't connect to those in that app.

Pocketcloud works when splashtop won't. My PC won't wake up after about 30 minutes of inactivity when using splashtop but pocketcloud still works.

Thanks for sharing but I just tried PocketCloud and it was a laggy mess compared to Splashtop.
I use teamviewer more often than anything else. I haven't tried gaming with it, but just thought I'd through that out there as an option.

Well for gaming, there's the OnLive option. Bad thing is it'll cost some money. I really haven't seen anything else satisfactory to stream games.

Well all windows PC, windows xp and beyond have rdp all you have to do is enable it and then you can connect to it with any rdp client.
Teamviewer is what I use, works great on every platform I have tried.
I use log me in ignition and i love it.

The Xtralogic remote desktop app is a real RDC which doesn't require anything to be installed on the host system. It actually interfaces with Windows software beyond just showing you a clickable image like a lot of VNC apps.
My question is has anyone installed Xtralogic RDC on their prime, and does it work well?

I used Xtralogic Remote Desktop Client. It's in Market for $25, but there's a trial available. I use it on my Galaxy Tab 10.1, my Galaxy Nexus, and have used it in the past on the TF101 and Galaxy S.
It works with the built-in RDP server on Windows 7, Vista, XP. I used it every day to manage a Windows Server 2008 R2 box. It also supports Terminal Services (RD Gateway) and Windows 8 (tested it with a Windows 8 VM).
It's not the best for streaming video from another computer, but in terms of true RDP compatibility, I have yet to see anything that beats it. $25 buys you a lot of updates, support, and flawless functionality.
@thegadfly you must have responded right after I clicked reply I'll be getting the Prime tomorrow so I'll post back here when I test it.
I used Splashtop on my TF1 - only one I found that properly used the keyboard and touchpad in the dock. Will be sticking with it for the TF2. Tried the phone version update on my Note this morning (now supported 720p resolution) and it's awesome - faster than before and new touchpad input is great.

as far as this discussion goes, all of them are completely legal and DRM-free.
My PC is a Dell laptop (i7-2670QM) running legit Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
I have a Samsung i9000 running ICS, and a B&N Nook Color Running CM7,
I tried reading about RTSP and UPnP and other stuff, but couldn't get my head around it, I'm usually good with computers, except for this case.
What I want to do is to setup a media streaming from my PC to any of my devices.
I don't even want my computer to re-encode the media, just stream it as-is, given that
you can play almost any format on android these days.
Is it possible?
If so, what do I need? can I use VLC, or do I have to setup something more serious?

have you tried Remote Media Center?
links over 3g, 4g, or wifi. works with windows 7 media center and allows you to stream content from that media center to your phone.
I would suggest xbmc . It works both on windows and linux. It works as server as well as client. On phone side use "Home Dia" which also works as server as well as client.
minidlna is a very good , smal and handy dlna server for linux.
All these are free.

Ok So what you need to stream your music and all sound from your pc or laptop to your phone right? well if so just download the SoundWire on your Android phone, you can get free version and full version in my case i can get all paid apps for free and i can tell u how, but now download that app and then go to download the soundwire server at georgielabs.cjb.net/[/url] install it once installed open the Soundwire server then app the app and enter the server ip showed on ur Soundwire server on ur pc. Im using it with my wifi. so i hope is what u need! take care

You can simply go on play download free app called "mediahouse upnp" and it will find dlna servers or just use es file explorer which will find any device on your wifi network.

Use es file explorer. It detects network devices and let Yoy browse them (if You set everything properly). After that just open Your file

I have tried streaming 720p movies and it is impossible.
Is DLNa/UPnP limited from WiFi/Internet bandwidth?
I calculated that with a speed of 7mpbs it would be easy to stream 720p content. Supposedly the android tv box I have with the router could easily reach more than 7mbps but.. it doesn't! Why??
try ArkMc app use, by DLNA supporting and connect PC as a server and stream to other devices what do you want, video, photos..

HomeDJ is best alternative to any Android streaming apps
Try it.
No firewalls, dynamic playlists, nice GUI, easy to setup.

Kinda late to the party here.
But after several moths on trying out various services mentioned here on the thread i found them to be complicated or just to much work to it.
After searching here in XDA i FINALLY found it. It called Tonido. It can stream any file from your PC (also Linux, and Mac) with a secure connection. Trust me try it out your self and you wont be disappointed.
Hope my post can help some out who is looking for such solution...
not to be confused with airdroid (which works if you're on the same network) but LogMeIn (http://logmein.com) works great on the touchpad using cm9. i was able to remote in to my mac running osx lion and move files to dropbox for transfer.
logmein is free for the desktop version but the mobile version is $30. worth it, imo. this is going to save me many nights of running back to the office late for me.

Has anyone tried using Gosupportnow? Costs only $19.95 / month and works on both Windows and MAC computers. Moreover, you can have a view only remote desktop connection as well from your iPad, iPhone etc. using a browser.

I find splashtop great! It allows for Windows 8 gestures, essentially making my Windows 8 Desktop PC run on my Tablet as a windows 8 touchscreen!
Videos play lag free, and the quality is great. I have never tried their premium service of remote usage, im currently looking for a free service that can allow me to access my home PC remotely, without having a static IP.

What version of Splashtop do you use?
I bought v1 both on WebOS and got it free on Amazon appstore but it has been really troublesome unless I turn off RDP and my firewall on the PC I'm connecting to.
Haven't tried void my bad experience with v1, and because I've got PocketCloud for remote desktop, and have now shared all my media using a DLNA server so I can play it natively on my TP and phone!
Has anyone here tried the "MyNet" feature of the tablet to control a computer through your tablet? How do you like it?
I'd like to take advantage of that for websites which stream video but are not compatible with mobile browsers of any kind. It would probably require being on the same wifi network but either way, pretty neat.
BTW, I love my Prime!! Got the issue with gps signal capture but I got my cell phone to direct me if I'm lost in my car.

The app is called splashtop. I believe there are a couple of threads talking about this application. Just to let you know there is a THD version that is up on the market now that works better and faster then the bundled version though it costs money. I am using it now and can connect to my home computer from work and its super fast. I love it. Use it at work all the time during meetings to connect to my desktop. The bundled version will close the connection on you due to a bug in that version. The THD version does not have this issue.
Just my 3 cents.

actually hes talking about the MyNet app that comes with the prime
its not a desktop mirroring tool it just allows streaming of media (pics videos music) to the prime from a pc
its actually pretty cool in how well it does it but it can stream MKVs though
It also allows the downloading of the files from the pc to the prime...its a nice way of moving files without having to plug in or use a sd card or dropbox
i wish it allowed folder downloading or multiple downloading rather than having to do a single file at a time.
Yeah, the MyNet app is a DLNA app for streaming media between DLNA devices. To me it seemed to be a decent proof of concept app, but I have found three apps that do a better job: 2player, BubbleUPnP, and iMediaShare.
iMediaShare can stream from several internet sources to your DLNA devices, but it's unfortunately still not optimized for tablets. It forces you into portrait mode.
For streaming music from my Prime to my blu-ray/stereo, I typically use BubbleUPnP.

Well when you read the op he states talking about controlling your laptop.....was confusing.....i use MovieBrowser UPnP.....just love the way it organizes the movies.......
So Op, sorry for the confusion.
I've used both apps and had good success with them.
I really like the MyNet app though as its a simple program that lets my stream movies/tv shows from my NAS to the TV in my bedroom. No more lugging the laptop up the stairs and clearing a space to put it!

Are you sure you mean the mynet app or do you the splashtop hd remote pc access function in the my cloud app?
From reading your poast I think that you mean teh My desktop feature in the my cloud app which is splashtop HD remote app which links up with a splashtop streamer app on your PC !! and this does not require you to be on the same wifi connection...I often use it to connect to my pc when away from home to check on email accounts etc
I'm sorry, it is the "mycloud" icon on the screen that I meant. From there you find the "my desktop" option which uses splashtop.
i know it is off topic....but i have used PhoneMyPC for years. love it. great app for controlling your various PCs from your android.
Loving mynet, works flawless with all my gizmos. Sitting waiting for someone to start using cornerstone in a rom and i will use it as my main tv interface.

Hi Zulu, I think I saw someone get a bit of hate for this suggestion with your Nexus Player LolliRock ROM but is it possible to install the Leanback Launcher onto this full Android ROM and emulate most of the Android TV experience? My reason would be that I want the freedom of the full Play Store app and settings but I do like the Android TV interface for use from my couch.
Also, presumably this requires an unlocked bootloader but not root because I've been struggling to root my 16 GB model.

You can start the leanback launcher also like an app if you create a shortcut like in this video https://youtu.be/NMqz8e33oq8 So when you install Android TV apps, you can have all in one bad place that is the leanback launcher. Without create a shortcut for every Android TV app. ( 10 in total )
I prferer Googl Now Launcher.
People not understand that you need just more accessibility on apps and this depend from developers.
You can control an app with a mouse, dpad or controller if a developer want this.
After that you can use Android, Android TV or also Android NOOB.
One thing is sure, Android TV is limited on purpose and you can't have all apps from Google Play.
The 320 dpi in build.prop is not compatible with many beautiful apps also if you sideload.
Every standard app is better and faster than the leanback version. Try standard youtube and leanback youtube to understand.
For me the life is too short to waste time with directional keys. I never used a classic Smart TV for this reason and all my TV are Smart TV.
For this reason i like full Android.

After reading a little closer I see it can be made to work if connected via usb, but I much rather have it work wireless since I use the box connected to a network cable and wireless network connection doesn't pose any interference for me. Is there a way to restore the wireless controller connection?

For the controller in wireless mode: ( wired works well )
Request it to Nvidia sayng:
Please Nvidia if you sell an hardware controller, why you not publish the drivers for Android, Windows and Linux like all other companies that sell an hardware controller ? Or explain how to add it in a custom firmware ? You publish also the source code, why not publish it as closed binaries like others parts proprietary ?
In the second post you can find an alternative to use the controller in wireless mode.
It work better than native wireless mode, everyone can compare also in Nvidia Grid. ( Grid is beautiful also with my bad adsl )
And don't forget that you can use also any other standard controller ( also a 5$ chinese controller ), because the voice search capability and audio routing is possible in this firmware in many ways. The smarter way to make voice search in google now ( the full google now ) is with a webcam attached or with a bluetooth headsets. It's smarter because you can do this without nothing in your hands. Just sayng: " OK Google " + videochats in hangout and more...
Unfortunally i can't solve this for now. The only one thing that not work, but not for my incompetence.
I don't want use bad words to explain better why this behaviour. But smart people can understand.
Has anyone tried this on a shield tablet? I would assume you ca get a close experience. Also are the Nvidia apps bundled in the rom(controller, grid, game stream)

I like this ROM, but I have come across a few things that might make me go back to stock. The problem with wireless game controller not working unless tethered to the device (Not zulu99's fault), and Doom 3 will no longer run. You start it and it immediately just goes back to the home screen without any error to reference. I downloaded the stock image and am still debating as to whether I want to go back to stock or not.. I didn't say it before and I should have, but thanks for all the time and effort you have invested in this ROM.

This firmware is for Shield Console, not for Shield Tablet.
Shield hub that have also grid inside can be downloaded directly from goole play.
for game stream i can work on the nvidia proprietary apk, but i tested Screen Stream Mirroring app and it work.
You can also record your gameplay with any app for screen recording so this is not a problem.

Forgive my confusion but isn't the point of this rom to mimic the shield console on other android devices? I have the tablet and want to add the android TV experience to it and immersive mode. Wouldn't flashing this Tom accomplish that?

No i ported full Android to Shield Console, because on Android TV you are in a walled garden and you can't have all apps from google play
In Android Tv you have also by default density to 320 dpi that is not good for standard apps.
If you like immersive mode you can simply use xposed framework.

Thanks for sharing the Doom 3 problem. Yesterday after your words i had it working on my development build.
I will upload a new firmware version very soon that fix the problem.
New firmware version 1.4 updated in first post.
