[Q] Screen pixel size - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know where to put this.
I'm using Nova Launcher for ICS and I want to customize it using desktop visualizer (dvr). I have my grid set to 5 rows and 4 columns.
I'm going to create my own icons but need to know the screen real estate space in order to space everything out evenly.
The SGS2 screen resolution for one screen is 480w x 800w.
My question is how much pixel does the dock take up for Nova launcher? As well as the top status bar if it takes any at all. Or how much pixel does the persistant google search bar take? After I take those into consideration, I would have my actual usable screen real estate.
Hope some knowledgeable person can help me out.

[Q] Optimal use of the screen size ? (Loss of screen space)

My last phone was a HTC Desire, now I use the Galaxy S3.
It's a great phone, but what a king size icons and a loss of screen space. On the home screen I have 4x4 space for icons, a large slider 4x1 and a dock for 4x1. When you use some widgets that are 4x2 the half of the screen is filled.
Starting the contact app shows me a few rows of contacts. But with a font size that can be read from outer space.....(font size in settings set to tiny)
Do you agree with this ?
Are there any opportunities (custom roms) to improve this ?
Maybe Apex launcher can solve some of these things...
Change your dpi

Nice to have such a choice!
Good to know that the dpi can be changed. But these middle aged eyes of mine will be thrilled that stuff is bigger on the screen. Awesome!
Download Apex Launcher or Nova Launcher. Both are smooth, free and have customizable desktop grids. I really loved the smoothness of the stock GS3 launcher but the lack of space was a dealbreaker for me.

SGS2 and Apex Launcher

Hi Guys,
Hope this is a valid question as the search function failed to bring up the answers.
I am now in the process of theming my phone and did lots of reading up. I wish to make my own custom wallpapers and embedded the icons/graphics on the wallpaper itself and use a transparent icon to launch the app. My main problem is with alignment. If I use Apex without margins, I can easily do simple calculations and place gridlines in my photoshop to aid in my design. However, I now wish to makes use of horizontal and vertical margins within Apex to better space my layout and this screws with alignment as I do not know the exact number of pixels to offset if I do use the margins in Apex.
So the question is: is there a certain number of pixels defined for the margins? If so, how much? 15p? 25p?
Thanks in advance...

how many dp in cell of home screen grid

Hi
does anybody know how many cells are on the homescreen grid of a tablet like nexus 7?
Also how many dip should those cells be?
I thought the grid was 5x6 on 7 inch tablets or 7x8 for 10 inch tablets. (portrait)
The screen shots I have seen have 6 launcher icons across except the bottom row just above the nav bar which has 7 icons.
I am a graphic designer desiging an app and widget. The widget needs to be 2x2 cells on the homescreen.
Sorry if this is the wrong place to post such a question, but I can't find any answers on design forums.
thanks

Large screen but still large gaps between widgets and icons. Any fix?

I really like having a larger phone but doesn't it seem like it's larger. I would expect more app icons or widgets to fit on a screen but it doesn't. I get some large gaps between my HD widgets and calendars and icons. Also it would be nice to maybe have 1x1 more column and rows for the screen. It seems that there is a lot of wasted space.
Is there any fix?
Thought the same thing so tried both nova and apex launchers (typically the same app) stuck with apex and you can increase the apps to what you want.

[Q] Why is widget grid size limited when customize on your own phone?

I get that the developers/designers are only doing themes for specific screen resolutions right now, but why is the core tools for creating custom Themer widgets restricted by large grid settings?
Confused as to what I mean? Please let me explain.
I can create a custom widget, which starts with the background box. But, in order to line the background box up with my home page background, I have to set the color of the background widget to a solid color and then resize it since it doesn't visualize the snap-to grid element (which it does).
So, as I said above, why is this limitation there in the first place? On my Note 2 I can't create a widget that goes to the top of my screen because it is out of bounds of my screen and when I go to add elements to the widget, they don't line up correctly unless I resize the widget background box to snap to below the top of my screen (by a good amount).
So, is it at least possible to have the default grid snap distance greatly reduced or give us an option to set it ourselves in regards to setting the widget itself?
I've encountered zero issue with moving elements within a widget box other than the inability to lock items individually once placed (that would truly help in them designing).
Sorry for any confusion, I'm not aware of the standard labels for the various design elements of a widget or the like.

Hows it going? Im Bill from MCS.
Im a still a bit confused as to what you are asking and what tools it is that you are using in Themer that are giving you the issue.
Im sure you have already made sure that padding is turned OFF in the settings, but I have to say just to be safe.
IF you are getting spaced on the sides or top or your widget, you might want to check to see if you are using odd numbers for the Grid (rows and columns). Because of the way custom build widgets from WYSIWYG editors like Zooper and Everything widget render on the screen you might be a 1px gap if you are using odd numbered Rows or Columns in your grid.
This is the first thing I would check. I have seen an issue where for some reason I get a 2 or 4px padding on the top and bottom of the widgets. It only happens to me now and again. I can usually delete the widget and re-add it to get rid of the issue.
