[Q] SGS2 AT&T i777/root/ICS - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I rooted my SGS2 i777 that was running Gingerbread. After rooting I used Titanium Backup for complete backup. Then I flashed leaked ICS 4.0.3 Build # IML74K.117 thinking it was the full blown ICS operating system, which it wasn't. That process also un-rooted my SGS2 so now I'm unable to access my Titanium Backup. Tried rooting again using same process as first time but was unsuccessful. Got the dreaded "yellow triangle". Was able to flash same ICS firmware as before. So I currently have above mentiond OS & Build and am not rooted. Questions...is there a root for the 4.0.3? If so, if I were to root again is there a better "leaked" ICS or should I wait for the "anticipated" official release? Main concern is that my Titanium Backup is still intact and I will be able to access it when rooted again. End result is that I'd like to be rooted and have ICS OS.
Please advise!

You didn't even bother searching did you? Try it it works wonders.
FYI the ATT leak IS ICS. What part isn't "full blown"? Its a leak which probably means its not even complete yet (there's already been 3 leaks so far). If it wasn't ICS it wouldn't say Android 4.0.3.

Always read the stickies before posting.

OP, if I were you, I would follow the link posted above by mattdm. Then do return to stock with root, and then get cm9. Quit Touchwiz altogether, it ruins the taste of ice cream sandwich.

If people not wanting to read 500 different pages in a forum bothers you, forums probably aren't the best thing for you to be involved with
Geez people are ruid on this site.

It gets highly annoying seeing the same crap asked day after day when you could just READ THE STICKIES and have your questions answered. Btw, I believe "rude" is the word you were looking for.
OP: Flash back to stock KH7 2.3.4, root using superoneclick 2.3.3, flash entropy's daily driver kernel (the .tar one) with mobile odin to give you clockworkmod recovery, flash this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568080
Rooted, basically stock Samsung ICS.

Yup... do what they said. When I got my GS2, first thing I did was read; must've read for like about 2 hours.. lol. Point is it may seem daunting because there's so much information, but it's worth it in the long run. In no time you'll have your device rooted correctly and be a happy flasher. And it saves you from turning your device into an expensive brick.

If people not wanting to do research before asking already-asked or already-answered questions bothers you, then I'd say that busy forums like this are probably not the best place for *you* or them.
This site is for developers, who do an incredible job of providing top-notch material for our devices. Getting software, instructions and advice here is a privilege, not a right.
Before I rooted and flashed my phone, I read and researched here for several days. That time likely would have been shortened if I hadn't also had to plow through useless pages of people asking questions about things that had already been explained in the first post of a thread, a sticky or answered within the thread (which a simple forum search would have found).

Point taken, but, I am a senior member of a lot of forums I have knowledge in and I am never rude when answering questions that someone new to the topic has. What you don't think about they may have searched and not realize they asked the same question over in different terms. You guys know all the terminology and other people may not. Some people on this site have very short fuses instead of using their knowledge to help people.

The main thing is that you don't want to update using one-click installers (which it sounds like you did) as they will more than likely contain bootloaders. The newer ICS leaks are a full featured ICS with some bugs (known or unknown). They are loaded with TouchWiz which is Samsung's launcher of choice. If you want a launcher more like the one in ICS you can easily install either Trebuchet, Apex, or Nova. They are all built from the original ICS launcher and serve to enhance it in some form. I personally use Nova.
Task650 has been releasing CWM flashable versions of the leak that do not have bootloaders, contain the version matching kernel with CWM already included, and are pre-rooted.
The main bit you might need to do is get the restore to stock (that you install with odin/heimdall) and start over. Once you load that root, install a cwm enabled kernel, then try updating again but this time use the CWM flashable package instead.

What to Flash after you root again.
I would suggest getting on Task650's rom you can find it here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574718. This rom lets you make a ton of modifications to your phone. If you want the ICS experience with speed and stability you can go with Phone-Brickers rom its good too. These are specifically made for the I-777. I use both of these dual booting with siyah kernal for SGS2.

[Q] rooting first time :)

Hello all,
this is my first time rooting and i have read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=996616, im downloading the files as i type, so my question is, it it hard to root my thunderbolt? also ive read the pros and cons, and i would also like to know from u rooters, what do u like from a rooted phone?
for those who want to just the question, here u go:
1) it it hard to root my thunderbolt? (following the link)
2) u rooters, what do u like from a rooted phone?
yes im excited to attempt to trying to root my thunderbolt ^^
It's not hard, just fallow the instructions to the letter and of course make sure you have adb set up and the proper drivers installed. After that it's pretty much a cut and paste affair.
Second question: Root = freedom, simple enough.
I went to Youtube to setup my adb.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153055 this is the ROM i am thinking, will i be able to get that onto my phone? i did the 2.5 version
also ty i appreciate answering my questions!
Before you flash any ROM, do yourself a huge favor, and read the OP (original post) and then read it again. Follow the directons carefully. After your first time its like riding a bike. Search the thread before asking questions too since you will likely get hammered by people for asking questions already asked and answered. Good luck.
BAMF is a great ROM, you might search later in the thread for RC5, Adryn leaked a preview with a different kernel than RC4.

You'll need an MR2 radio for that ROM, I recommend the one from the OTA. You can find it in the development thread, it gets flashed through hboot.
Edit: And yes, the ROM you flash will have busybox built in. And +1 for the post above mine, use the search function, it works well. When you do have a question post it in that ROM's thread or keep it in the Q&A section. Best of luck to you.
Hey there! Yes, this is my first post in this forum I believe, but I've been a heavy lurker since December. Currently, my tbolt is rooted and has been for a few months. I'm running BAMF 3.0 RC4 and I can honestly say, the pros far outweigh the cons. A few of my favorite pros is the ability to run a wider selection of apps, more control, the speedier updates from devs compared to Verizon/HTC, overclocking, better controlled over battery life, no bloat removal..the list goes on and on. Basically, being rooted allows me to make changes to my phone to fit my needs. And yes, it is incredibly easy IMHO to root this phone. Good luck, and have fun.
Should mention too that I did mess up my radio when I flashed GB but it was quickly fixed by reflashing. So the only con has been my own fault. I also believe that you can restore the phone to a "fresh out of the box" state should you ever need to take it back.

Try the RC5 preview with the new MR2 OTA leaked radio. Smoothest combination I've used yet.
Yeah definitely would suggest flashing the official MR2 radio as well. It's been the most solid for me. Had issues with 2.5, and I had slow 3g speeds on the leaked MR2.

I'll try BAMF again when RC5 is officially released. My phone really likes Ziggy's kernels. Was flashing almost daily since I got my bolt trying to find decent battery life. Running Synergy now for a week with no issues. Liked the other roms, but Ziggy's kernel gives me the best life.

[Q] - Why can't I find the Stock Touchwiz - only the old honeycomb

I would like the files to ODIN the stock Touchwiz update from late 2011.
I would then write a guide for everyone on how to return the tab to stock... this is asked way too much.
I do NOT want to write the guide updating everyone to the old honeycomb.
Anyone have ODIN files for returning to stock touchwiz?

"Stock" and "touchwiz," at least on this forum, are mutually exclusive. I honestly have no idea what you're asking for. Do you want android 3.1 or 3.2? If you want 3.2, you're stuck with touchwiz; there is no stock 3.2 ROM available. If you want a stock 3.1 without touchwiz, that can be found in the dev forum.
If you want a guide on how to return a tab to stock (and the only reason I can imagine someone would want to do this would be to send it in for warranty service), theres a guide in the sticky in the dev subforum, and also team overcome has a great method with all the downloads both on their ROM post and on their website (with great instructions too).
Simply asking for an ODIN version of the TouchWiz update. That is stock... not rooted/tweaked.

I think you need to read up on this a bit more because that doesn't exist.
Here's a little history for you: Touchwiz was an update to samsung's android 3.1 build that came out after 3.1 was released (so you can get both stock 3.1 and touchwiz 3.1 builds). Touchwiz was integrated into the 3.2 build. So the only "touchwiz upgrade" i can think of was an OTA upgrade to 3.1. I don't think flashing that will get you anywhere. If you're looking for the stock 3.2 build from samsung (and I suspect you are), go to samfirmware.com. If you really did search the forum you'd have found this everywhere, including in the sticky in the dev forum.
But there's no need to write a guide. Use CWM to flash the stock ROM, and then use ODIN to flash stock recovery. That's all it takes; you now have a stock tab.
^ I appreciate your response... I am just pointing out that I have never seen the touchwiz stock ODIN that one could flash... only honeycomb.
edit: and considering that almost daily there is a post about getting back to stock, I would say a guide is warranted.
If you can help do that, great.
coming from this same line its also helpful if the instruction would be basing from the download of the recent or older firmware, which should be from the downloads from sammobile.com that we all know provides all the stock roms, latest and versions before.
reverting stock means, the latest official: recovery (not cwm), kernel, and the firmware (rom) itself. these all 3 components, not kernel or firmware only. nothing straightforward is provided here, all bits and pieces on scattered threads but don't coherently work well with each other, mainly because they're abandoned or not updated anymore by their OPs.
another reason for reverting back to stock aside from warranty chase, is so that kies will be able to just update the tab to its latest firmware, or even ota. this is basically how the tab provided by samsung should be for a really basic end user without even knowing what root is.
then above average users can always do their rooting and after mods cleanly, knowing they came from the real clean stock and can always go back either by cwm backup/restore or manually everything from scratch.

This is not intended as a flame, but from what you've written I am not certain you understand what you're talking about. Touchwiz is basically Samsung's theme running on top of honeycomb. No honeycomb = no touchwiz. Also, you still need to make a distinction between 3.1 and 3.2 ... Regardless, as far as I know there is no touchwiz-enabled ROM that can be flashed with ODIN.
Anyways, there is a very good guide on teamovercome's site which is unfortunately down right now. Here's a link to the site; since it's down I can't link directly to the guide:

^ I am perfectly aware of what TouchWiz is.
I am simply trying to find the files to load in ODIN that would allow someone to boot up to the stock (not rooted or debloated) setup of the TouchWiz update in late 2011.
I do not want to go back to honeycomb 3.1. Not sure how I can say it more plainly.
Does this exist? If not in ODIN, in a flashable zip?
here's a 3.2 stock (non rooted) ROM

The 'touchwiz update" was for 3.1.
3.2 came with touchwiz baked in.
If this is what you're looking for, then you're looking for the samsung android 3.2 update, not the "touchwiz update." I don't know how I could say this more clearly.
If you read my posts, I answered your question. What you're looking for does not exist. If you need stock (god knows why) just follow the many guides that already exist (or the instructions I gave earlier).
Anyways, I can't help you any further without pulling my hair out. Maybe someone else has more patience. Good luck.

Honestly man, it may be better to not answer at times.
You do not understand me. Perhaps I am not saying things clearly enough. O well.
I want the files to return a device to STOCK 3.2.... not 3.1 Honeycomb which is all I see. I consider "stock" to be an unaltered version of the update (or original) firmware... I also prefer to go to the latest "stock" setup, not 3.1 HC.
You said it does not exist, I laugh at that.
I would like this because many people:
a - ask this all the time
b - want it for servicing/warranty
c - prefer to return to stock before switching to a new rom.
I prefer to use ODIN since I know and like ODIN.
If this does not make sense, do not respond or sound rude please.

I believe this is KMM not KMN. If so you may get an update to KMN after you flash this
it is labeled as KMM but this would be the stock first instance of 3.2

I did check out that zip... It looked like it was the one Samsung pulled for wifi issues. I know like a week or so later they rolled it out again, but I did not know if there was a different build, I assumed so.
Thank you for posting that by the way, got carried away with all the other madness. Thanks!
note the wifi problem was due to the installer not the rom itself. if flashing and not installing via OTA or Kies - it should not have that problem

I give up - Seeking Help

Here is my issue. I have SGH-i777 - Plugged it into Kies - Updated to ICS - Found a Guide (not on here - stupid me) to Root my SGH-i777 on ICS.
It worked, but I noticed the GT-i9100 under the Galaxy S II logo with a yellow triangle at the bottom -however, the phone worked great until I stupidly used ROM Manager - Bricked my phone. I found a guide on here, but again...stupid me...didnt realize I was following a guide for the GT-i9100 resulting me in solving my issue and getting the phone to finally turn back...but only to think it was fully a GT-i9100. The only two keys on the bottom that worked, were my home button and the menu button on the bottom left. Nothing else.
I have searched and searched for this, and found a Post on here that advised me to Download the Odin3 I777 One Click No BL. Once I finally got my phone into download mode (which was a chore in itself) I finally was able to show SGH-i777 in My Kernel Version when I go into About Phone. HOWEVER - I still get the GT-i9100 under the logo during boot, my Auto Play window that pops up on my computer when phone gets plugged in via USB shows GT-i9100 and Kies tells me it can not update the device but at least it registers as SGH-i777
My questions are, how to get rid of whatever it is that shows up GT-i9100...so I guess how to start ALL OVER. And second, is how to properly get ICS or maybe even Jelly Bean - and if there is a root for it. What the proper steps are, so I dont end up in this mess again. Thanks in advance guys!
Triangle away from the appstore works to get rid of the triangle and such. You can also flash most if not all the roms here they are all ics or jb anymore I think

Hey buddy,
Looks like you took the long way haha. Alright, first of all we need to check if you are already rooted. Not sure if the one click no bl for you talk about was rooted or not.
If you determine you are rooted, you should be able to go into the android development forum, and flash any rom (be sure to follow instructions in OP).
If not, post back your android version, kernel info, and we'll go from there.
Ps, triangle away removes the triangle and gti9100 logo from startup, but you must be rooted and on ics (not sure if it works on jb, def no for gingerbread)

OP thanks for trying everything yourself first and learning from your mistakes before posting! You have no idea how many people don't put forth the effort you have done already. So as a reward, I'll provide you with nice easy links to get you back up and running again! :highfive:
This guide will help you get back to completely stock, unrooted Gingerbread (as if you just bought the phone). You can skip only the last step of that guide since you're actually keeping your phone. Then you can use this guide to start flashing custom ROMs without getting that triangle thing. I highly recommend reading both guides very thoroughly and multiple times so you understand everything. After doing so, feel free to ask questions about anything you don't understand from your reading and I'll do my best to help you out. And after you fully understand everything you are about to do, here's a list of ROMs, kernels, etc for your choice of flashing (most custom ROMs for this phone versions of ICS).

Why are you trying to be such a ****? Honestly except maybe motomudder's (sorry man ) there weren't any bs posts and none were necessary. You say you get tired if reading the same old crap of telling everyone to do what they agreed to when they signed up but when we tell people to do it over and over it annoys you? Nice double standards.

Could've been an ass, but the OP did take time to post alot of info, so I chose to take the light route.
Just search people, its really not that hard.

hello, also a new user here, with a situation similar to OP's
I had a working, rooted ICS by flashing the siyah kernel. Then I ran ROM manager and ruined everything
I used "I777UCKH7 OCD Root No BL" to get back to rooted gingerbread, but it's full of errors "android.process.acore unexpectedly ended"
I don't want to make it worse, which is why I'm asking you guys. Do I need CWM to do a system wipe? Should I reset/wipe my phone first, then flash an ICS ROM? What about kernels - how do I go from UCKH7 to UCLE5 (if that makes sense)?
my end goal is just a rooted ICS

From my understanding you can do a wipe data/factory reset from 3e recovery while on KH7.....I'd search it beforehand. but IIRC.
But if you want stock. flash stock.
we dont need a working system to be able to flash a ROM with Odin or CWM.

LOL...yes. This, and we should also add that if you flash a ROM for the 9100 on your 777 you need to buy all the recognized devs on the 777 forum a beer
To kernelsprite: i don't have an answer for you, but I'm fairly sure that the people who can help you will need some more info. Can you boot your phone? If not, can you get into recovery or download modes? What ROM did you have in place before you used ROM manager? Was it just stock?
Hopefully with this info someone more knowledgeable than me will be able to help.

[Q] Rooting SGH-i777 that has stock ICS installed

Alright, I'm a noob...(loved the intro video!) and I've spent an hour or so searching for rooting info for my device. Did find a good thread that was over a year old about rooting SGH-i777 with older android versions, but was afraid to follow THOSE directions since mine has newer version (Android 4.0.4). And I find other threads about rooting other versions of GS2...not the AT&T.
So far I've learned NOT to use ROM Manager, and not to look to Galaxy2Root for help...so I guess there's that. I don't want to be stupid here, but can someone direct me to a thread with Rooting instructions for my phone with ICS already on it, and recommended ROMs. I'd like to have more control over my phone and take advantage of JB releases that seem to be out with good reliability. I'm used to doing this sort of thing on computers, but not with Android. Had my phone for about 15 mos....my first Android.
Suggestions?
TIA...

This is so far easiest thing to do, however be careful, DO NOT, DO NOT,
choose the "one click" patch option which come first, as that will patch
the system and you will NOT be able to root again. and there is NO way
to un-patch. I was not being careful and now trapped.

Appreciate the suggesting. Been researching ExynosAbuse, and looks like it could cause camera not to work, and in the compatibility list, though the Galaxy Sii 9100 is listed, the SGH-i777 is not...seems like a concern to me.

I am also a noob when it comes to anything mobile. I got my GS2 last year (first android as well), and I've since updated to 4.0.4. I have also done some research on rooting(after my fiance keeps bugging me about "fixing" our gs2s due to them always turning off) but I was uncertain on what rom to use. I have no experience with phones, and I don't want to do something stupid and break our phones. I know that I am supposed to " use exynos abuse", but that's pretty much all I know/can find without reading every page on the 80 page threads. Are there any suggestions on a stable(ish) rom for us both to use/how easy is it to "use exynos abuse"? (without doing what tyhust did) We are fine with our ICS and I wont venture into the world of Jellybean yet... (maybe once I acquire some more experience)
Thanks in advance, and for the site in general, there is a TON of information on here...

I'm also a noob... so if I want to down grade to 4.0.3 rooted from 4.0.4 stock, should I use ucle5_stock_rooted.tar with Odin?
Is is necessary to wipe since both are ICS?
Thanks!

Yes, that should be the tar you use. Make sure it's from this thread. You should be okay without wiping, but if you have problems, I'd suggest flashing 2.3.4 and wiping from recovery once on 2.3.4; reason being, stock ICS kernel may brick your phone if you wipe with it (see linked thread for details on this eMMC superbrick bug).
OP, if you're uncertain about ExynosAbuse, try this method instead. I know it works, I used it myself very recently, albeit I was already on 4.0.3 and had not upgraded.

This is a good thread.
I had the same issues with 4.0.4 and i found it was a live wallpaper app (water drops) causing my random "power off". Since switching to a different live wall paper, i have had NO random "shut downs".
I still want to root my S2 and this is the best thread i have found that addresses the stock 4.0.4
good luck.
Well, after a week of no shut downs, my phone just shut off. So i guess the live wallpaper was not the issue.
Back to the drawing board
Not to hijack the thread or anything but I'm new to this phone too. I understand the rooting process on ICS what I don't understand is installing a custom recovery and kernel. Why do you have to use a gingerbread kernel and why can you not just use stock? I've always just rooted, installed custom recovery and flashed roms on Verizon phones so installing a custom kernel to achieve custom recovery is foreign to me. I've been reading the stickies but I don't understand this....is it only to avoid the flash counter being tripped? Is there a easier way to install the recovery or am I making this harder than it needs to be? Thanks for any help!

Our phone has recovery baked into the kernel. For what reason I don't know but I'm sure its a good one as just flashing recovery is IMO easier.
Thanks. Last question. After installing a gingerbread kernel and the baked in recovery do I need to install a new kernel to flash a jb or ics rom. Sorry for the noob questions. Thanks for your help.

If you're just trying to get into recovery to flash something then any kernel will do. Since the system won't need to boot up with that kernel installed you're just flashing one to enter recovery.

So I want to install a gb kernel and recovery only so I can flash a custom rom that comes with kernel and recovery, correct? So before flashing the gb kernel in mobile Odin I should have a rom already downloaded on the sd card so I can immediately flash that? I'm sorry for all the questions this is drastically different from what I'm used to.

How to start rooting my Vibrant

Hey, I've been lurking around here for awhile and I'm a complete noob when it comes to rooting. I see all these super one click root access programs and other root programs however they don't seem dependable or they seem outdated.
Is there a really good thread or resource for a complete beginner I can look at so I can start rooting my Samsung Vibrant (2.2) ??? I would really appreciate it.

May I ask, do you want to stay in Android 2.2 rooted or do you want something else? For general information there are several threads scattered in the General, Q&A and Development forums for this device:
1. ★★★ NOOB GUIDE :: Root :: Odin :: Files :: Guides ★★★
2. [REF] The Official XDA Vibrant Bible Thread -ROMS/KERNELS/MODEMS/MODS/ETC
3. [PROGRAM] AIO Vibrant Toolbox 2.5 *Beginners Start Here* Also for advanced users
Those should get you started. You need to read those to know the what to do and what not to do.

And no I want to upgrade it to the latest Android OS possible for Vibrant, I'm assuming in rooting terms they are called ROMs ?

The terms are in one of those threads. ROMs are the operating system you are running. Custom ROMs are systems such as CyanogenMod (CM) and the like. If you want to go up the ladder to Android 4.4.4 KitKat, then you should first find any Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS, Android 4.0.x) ROM and flash it, once you're on the recovery
then you can flash a 4.4.4 ROM such as CM11. I suggest reading those in order to familiarize yourself with the terms and how-tos. It's even more organized than when I began rooting and exploring Android back in October 2010.
might want to mention the EU bug ICS is known for, its a real pita if you get hit with it. I would skip ICS if you're still stock I'd go to GB, JB, followed by kitkat.

just supposed to flash the ics ROM for the kernel and recovery then flash the kitkat rom right after so there won't be any time to catch the virus. I recommend using ics passion.

Its not needed I've done it numerous times already with out any issues when ever i felt like starting fresh from stock. flashing ics for recovery and kernel just to get to 4.4+? sorry but i don't think so, you're thinking of CM10.2... one can go back to stock (Froyo) jump to GB followed by JB and of course KK pretty easily without the need to flash ICS. how can you say just by flashing ICS right after wont get you hit with the ICS bug? just flashing ICS once will risk you getting the EU bug.
I agree. If there is no need to flash ICS, then why put yourself in the possibility of getting hit by EU. Believe me, I have done extensive work on trying crack that bug with multiple people in the Captivate/Fascinate sections for nearly 2 years and to-date there is no "cure".
I thought you had to go online to get the bug. Oh well I stand corrected, didn't know you could go to JB from GB without issues
