Phone lag - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey folks,
So I am running a rooted TB with SoaB custom ROM and SSLauncher as my launcher. An issue that has now gotten out of hand is when I make a call. I am using the stock phone system, and when I access it, it comes up quick. BUT when I select a number to call, I can expect to wait between 10 to 15 seconds on average for the call to actually begin (screen changes to picture). Answering calls is instant, but making calls takes soo freaking long.
Anyone got any ideas?

I have found that this happens on some roms and not on others. You could try running a different dialer or running V6 Super charger if you have not yet, both might help. Also try switching up the kernel, governor settings, and bulletproofing the dialer app in using the V6 Script

I wonder if its ur launcher, i had no issues runnin it stock.

Im running V6, but don't know how to bulletproof it. I will try a different dialer.
Thanks.

anyone else experiencing this? Is this only for our galaxy S phones or are other phones experiencing this as well?
I don't want to do the lag fix cause I really don't know the long term affects of using it. reading posts about data corruption, programs not working, no clue if i have to revert when froyo comes out, copying back data if you run out of space manually? yeah, just a little too complicated for me in case something goes wrong.
oh btw, latest google voice update is on the market now, it has widgets now.
I do not have the lag fix, when I click Voice I can go...

I cant even start saying it no lag fix either.
Are mississippi's the standard for measuring lag on Android?
I only use my google voice for voice mail but it opens almost instantly and I'm not using a lag fix.
yes I have the same problem its takes really long to open the gvoice app...it didn't used to do that before the last update...it's kinda annoying

A friend of mine at work has a Droid X and it does the same on his phone. He would get some lag opening up the app and major lag on receiving the notifications as well. The notifications are fairly quick on my Vibrant. But sometimes opening up and even trying to enter a text in GV is painful.
Have any of you tried clearing the cache? It takes hella long on my mytouch but I assumed that's because the mytouch is hella slow. Perhaps not...
After awhile, GV is really ****ing up for me. It's the new update with the widgets and whatnot, I would stand by for a new update that fixes the lag.
it did it before the latest update. it's issue with the vibrant, not gv, especially after installing the lagfix and things were near instant.
Is anyone still getting lag in Google Voice? I'm running Bionix 1.7 with the Voodoo kernel, and everything is buttery smooth with the exception of Google Voice. It occurs even while composing text messages within GV ("hey how ar" -- 6 second lag -- then the rest of my keystrokes appear in rapid succession).
Running Bionix 1.9 NOT overclocked and NO lag fix, everything runs as fast as on my Nexus
I dont have any lag on the phone 90% of the time, BUT some apps I suppose are not made with Galaxy in mind and do lag. I am sure this has something with apps.
I've got absolutely no problems using GV. You can see what I'm running below

Yup, same here. I usually open up the task manager and it helps out a little bit. I've also noticed that the occasional reboot helps to prevent this.
I'm running 1.9 though.

I've had lag with GV going back to stock JFD, JFD with ext2 lag fix, and finally Bionix with ext4 (voodoo) lag fix. I'm wondering if it's just GV at this point

How heavily do you use GV? I have quite a few texts (a few threads at the 100 maximum per thread) in my inbox. I'm wondering if that's the cause.

Same for me. I use to dread using Google Voice because it was so slow to respond to everything. I did have a lot of text as well but with Bionix with OC/UV/VOODOO Kernel that issue is gone and I can actually use it again and not get mad with it's unresponsive behavior. Thank XDA!
Edit -- I honestly don't know what it could be. I don't remember it ever lagging when I had my Nexus One. It's still slow to open but everything is just more responsive that it doesn't bother me anymore.

After I updated it yesterday, it's the fastest I've seen it. Weird. Anything is better than it was though lol

no lag on Nexus and Vibrant. But i only use GV for voicemail.
I tested Nexus browser vs Vibrant and they also seemed to be the same. however 3rd party Xscope V5 browser worked fine on Nexus, but lagged alot on Vibrant.
Also noticed small lag with 3rd party keyboard that i am using.......
All lag was fixed with ext2 lagfix (voodoo lagfix helped too but not at much) but i dont want to use any fixes now. i just use stock browser now and everything else seems to work good

Well I get absolutely no lag anywhere except in GV. This has been the case with ext2 lag fix and ext4 (Voodoo). I think GV lag is dependent on GV text message usage then. I'm going to try synching GV to a new Google account

Hm this is interesting. Did you notice the issue went away with Bionix 1.9.1 specifically, or did some other event eliminate the lag?

Launcher Pro - No call history

I installed Launcher Pro Plus on Das BAMF 1.3.2 and whenever i open up the phone/dialer the call history that normally displays behind the keypad is blank. If i select call history from the bottom, then switch back to the dialpad, the history will be displayed. Its a pain to have to switch back and forth every time i bring up the phone. This doesn't happen when using Sense as the default launcher. Anybody have any idea what causes this or how to fix it? Thanks for any help/ideas!
I am having this problem too, really irritating.
dbu over in the development forum posted this:
Note: there seems to be a little bug with all 3rd party launchers where if you you hit the phone button and the dialer pops up, the contact list is blank and the smart dial does not work. To remedy this long press phone, select a new application and restart Launcher Pro then add the phone back, you may also have to open up the dialer and try to dial a few numbers and delete them and the contacts should appear. Not really sure why this happens.
Going to give it a try and see how it goes.
Long press on the phone shortcut > Change Shortcut > Applications > Phone
I did it yesterday and it fixed it. Just change the icon back to what you want after and you should be all set. I haven't had an issue since I did this.
How's LP running for you? I was using LP paid, but after the last update, it runs like complete crap for me. (I'm on the BAMF ROM too).
Sense runs perfectly, but LP is laggy and FCs a lot. Makes my TBolt feel like my old G1, ugh.
I have been experiencing the same problem with Launcher Pro. Even stock my phone still did that. Like it was said above, type a number in and delete it and your recent calls will come up. I haven't installed a custom rom yet, I'm just running the stock root rom with the 1.4ghz kernal. It doesn't force close or run slow for me. I prefer it to sense.

Mine is a bit slow when I get texts and Handcent pops up. The screen unlocks, the window pops up, and it takes a while until the sms sound plays. I have been able to reply to the text and send it with time to spare before the sound plays. That's the only lag I've had really. I may try using the stock app and see if that clears it up.

I finally had to give up on LPP for now. Sucks too because I had my phone set up very nicely. I ended up with more issues using Handcent and LPP(with Das BAMF rom) and I tried GoSMS(hated it) and the stock app(also hated it).
I'll keep it loaded on my phone for now and see when it updates if anything changes.
I'm not using LP but handcent works fine for me.

I looked through the comments on the market for Handcent. Apparently there are a number of people experiencing the same issue I am regarding the lag. Maybe I'll uninstall it and reinstall it. If it's anything like a computer, it will work flawlessly after that.

[Q] Speedy V7 Automatic in Molten V2.2?

I'm considering flashing Molten 2.2. The main reason is it includes Speedy V7 scripts. I tried and failed to install the Speedy script before and hoped it would already be running in Molten 2.2. Is Speedy V7 just automatically installed and running on Molten 2.2, or are there steps I'll need to take to get Speedy running in Molten? Thanks.
It should work right out of the box

Thanks Ryman. I flashed it and only had a few minutes to play with it. I tried corporate sync and couldn't get connected. Probably my fault but had to flash back to stock just because this is my work phone.
I noticed the scrolling in the app drawer is much smoother than stock as well as home screen scrolling. That's probably my #3 problem with this phone.
#1 is I get stutters now and then in my video recording.
#2 is the jerky scrolling of the web browser.
Sometimes I wonder if the phone's software is just only using one processor core. My Samsung Galaxy S 4G (single core same speed) never stuttered taking video. Scrolling performance was about equal.
That's how it was back on froyo, but now with GB we got both cores engaged and if you use the CPU sliders in ROM ToolBox, you can make it go FASTER!! I keep it set to 1000 for both Max and min and keep it charged all day. I gain flying speeds, but also gain a battery life of 10 hours if that

I saw the sliders in Rom Toolbox but I thought I had read a while back that they have no effect because of the locked bootloader. Overclocking or even locking the clock at 1ghz would be great. Maybe it's time for me to get exited here and reflash.

No afaik you can use the sliders as a governer... I use setcpu to underclock when charging and trust me you don't wanna try and use the phone at 216mhz...
You cannot overclock the device though.

Just very curious as to why your install of speedy was a fail?
I can help u get it running if u would like to stay stock and try speedy...
Just let me know.
I can also help u get it running on any rom.
VERY easily done...
Make sure you have the option set to view hidden files. I flashed it like 5 times before I realized that haha
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
That was it. Just had to view hidden files. I ran Speedy a few days but then had an occasion to take a video today and it still pauses and stutters. Web page scrolling is still not smooth.
Try using ROM ToolBox CPU sliders to raise them up when you want to take videos.
Glad that worked, you flash it like crazy "why isn't it there?!?!?" And then your like "oh, it was already there" haha

AOKP messaging app

I have been having this issue for a long time now and it's gotten very aggravating- I don't know if this is news to anyone but basically every other few times i'm in my messaging app my text stops typing and I have to exit the messaging app and re enter to continue typing my message. This isn't an issue with the keyboard ( I use ICS standard keyboard) as I have tried several keyboards and had the same problem. I have done a complete wipe several times and I update AOKP every chance I get. Is this a known bug? Is there any solution to this? Thanks for your time.
Same thing happens on my Atrix running AOKP #37.

You lock your screen while on Messaging app, don't you? I noticed that any time the keyboard is up and the phone locks, it will cause that or another error where it accepts input for a certain amount and stop. The only way to fix both is to either back out of the app (usually press back button twice or home) or before you lock, go to home.

Yeah, I noticed it happens a lot when the screen is locked with the keyboard open. It happens in every app, happens to me on facebook and anything else I lock my screen on while the keyboard is up.
I switched to Serendipity 9.4 from AOKP and haven't seen an instance of it since. I noticed it happens on pure AOSP built roms and haven't seen it happen on any of the i9100 Sammy ports or i777 Sammy leaks.

+1, changed to serendipity and haven't looked back, a much more stable rom in my opinion

Yeah I tried serendipity and it seemed to be a pretty good rom, it's just that I can't leave aosp based roms because there is so much more customization built right in (in this instance aokp) and I don't like what Samsung did to ice cream sandwich really anyway... can anyone confirm that CM9 does this as well?

Any Non Stock Rom Reboots and Shows Green Screen Randomly

I'm having an issue with every rom except the stock rom with the phone automatically rebooting itself while doing simple tasks and showing a green screen. I tried enabling force gpu rendering etc but still getting this. Though with any stock roms (default rogers rom + the jb 4.1.2 for att etc) i dont occur this issue. What could be the problem?
Yeah this happens wayyy to often on 4.2.2 roms a little bit less on 4.1.x roms.

This is usual since we do not have the kernel source to make ROMS stable and not reboot. 4.2.2 ROMs are more stable then 4.1.2 so idk what you did there.

Rebooting on 4.2 ROMS
I'm having the same problem as OP with my i717 It happens bad on all of the 4.2 ROM's I've tried, and I know it's not the ROM. So far I've tried: Slim, Supernexus, CM10.1,ReVolt all of which I love! I really want to fix this. I start a game or other app and get a wildly flashing green, blue or sometimes black screen and then she reboots. Usually when opening a game or instagram, but not limited to those apps. It's hard for me to replicate the symptoms. Anyone else struggling with these symptoms on 4.2 roms? It seems less often on 4.1.2 ROM. When I restore a Blackstar ICS setup from twrp the phone runs beautifully. I've used darkside super-wipe hoping that would help. I've also tried changing recovery. Now I'm running out of things to try. I feel like somethings not being cleaned properly before install but I'm new so I don't really know.
Should I try using ODIN to flash a stock jelly bean firmware in order to sort of "start over fresh"?
I wish I could explain to everyone better my problem.

1) AOSP is unofficial so these is going to happen. 2) Is your screen flickering? 3) if so check HW overlays in dev options.

It happens to PACman ROMs too, try listening to music while attempting to cause the crash.. .There will be a loud beeping sound, followed by the greenish-blue screen, then the device will shut off, and reboot
I got the crash on trying to wake the device to unlock, and grabbed a logcat using Catlog.
