Hi everyone, first, this is my first post, new to the forums, at least as a registered user. I have a problem with my phone. I know most of you are wondering why I have not just read the other posts on the forums, but I have. I have attempted every solution to the problem posted previously.
Background: Phone: Samsung charge.
I was being impatient and did not want to wait for the gingerbread update form Verizon. I flashed the leaked gingerbread 2.3.4 onto my phone using odin. Everything went great. I was able to use my phone with no problems except shortened battery life, but nothing major. About a month ago the battery life was impossible to maintain and there were some software bugs, like clicks during calls, startup taking forever, around 2 minutes on average!, and random restarts that never happened before. I decided to look up some fixes and found that verizon and samsung had released GB 2.3.6 for the charge. I got excited and decided I wanted to get that, but I could not via OTA. I read some forum posts and they mentioned attempting a factory reset on the phone then trying OTA update. I went ahead with factory reset and everything went fine. My startup time is around 25 seconds now and no random clicks or gliches, but still not on 2.3.6, which was the whole point. I then decided to just flash the stock 2.3.6 rom to the phone.
Problem: When I plug my phone in to multiple computers it will charge but not connect to the computer. This means on my Mac it does not show as an external drive, which it has in the past. On my windows 7 machine it says that drivers were installed but could not be used (I can get the exact quote if needed.) I attempted to go into device manager and solve problem that way but it shows my phone as "unknown device". I have tried to enter download mode when hooked up to windows computers and no connection is found.
Possible solutions attempted and their outcomes:
1. As stated, I attempted the method shown in a thread on droid forums for installing the samsung drivers. I have attempted multiple times to install the drivers on my windows machine and the device remains "unknown".
2. I have attempted multiple cables on multiple computers, both mac and windows 7. No change.
3. I have installed adb and attempted to locate devices using adb devices command on mac. No devices found.
4. I have attempted all methods with both usb debugging checked and unchecked.
5. I have tried every possible usb port I have.
Ideas/questions I have had that I have no idea are possible or how to fix!
Would a factory reset take away the ability to connect to a computer from my phone. So, is there a piece of software in the build I have that controls the connection between the computer and the phone, an identifier of sorts, which is now missing, now that I have reset the leaked ROM.
Is there a way to flash a new ROM without connecting to a computer, via the sd card, and what is that? I have read some things in other posts but am too much of a n00b to understand most of them when using sdcards.
ANY help will be greatly appreciated. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! I have been at this for at least 6 hours, sifting through forums, searching google, attempting fixes that others have stated worked for them, only to fail every time. Thank you all.
have you try on a different pc?
maybe on your PC there is some problem with the drivers.
Moreover to connect via
adb u must enable Debug mode on your device in the application menu.
To flash kernel or other directly from your sd you can use the clockwordmode, but to install it you must before
install it and i fear you must use your cable connection

I have tried multiple PCs and a mac, even windows on bootcamp. I have installed drivers on every one, even uninstalled and reinstalled on one. One PC, my laptop was a fresh windows install (it was a linux box but I needed windows to use Odin). I was in debug mode and not in debug mode when attempting adb. Thanks for the suggestions though. As I said, I have tried numerous things and am completely stuck! so frustrating!
"I attempted to go into device manager and solve problem that way but it shows my phone as "unknown device"
Exactly there... you can try to force device to install a different driver.
Double click the unknown device then driver then update driver then find software in your computer then choose manually from a list of device drivers in your computer then show all devices you should see "android adb interface" or something related to google or android.
Try it... i hope this can help you.
I'm trying to use my 64-bit windows laptop to install the recently leaked ICS update on my SGH i717. Which as of now is only available as a .exe file. The problem is (confirmed by samsung tech support) that the i717 is incompatible with 64-bit windows, and isn't even recognized by my computer. Is there any way to remedy this? I do not have access to any 32-bit machines, and I really want this update!! Thankyou.
I installed the leak via the Odin exe. on my 64 bit machine with no problems.
Really? I can't even get my computer to recognize my phone, not even as usb storage. I've installed and reinstalled every driver I could find. I've even plugged it into a couple different computers. The best answer I could get was that it was because of the my windows version from the samsumg tech support woman. Is there a special driver out there or am I missing something?

Just install dagr8's saurom ICS. It's flashable via CWM and located in dev section.

I don't have a problem with my 64 bit system recognizing and mounting my i717. It didn't work at first, but it turned out that my stock samsung data cable was faulty. Used a different cable and haven't had an issue since.

Well I tried a few chords. Is there any root methods that I can do from the device without a computer?
Download the latest Kies.
Let it install and make sure you select the USB drivers.
Uninstall Kies because it's ****.
Leave drivers.
Replug handset (make sure debugging is on)
This should put you in the clear mate. If it doesn't, get the Android Development Kit for the proper ADB drivers
Go to shop development, look for the pre root kernel, download USB drivers. It works, but your computer doesn't have the drivers for the phone

Works for me on w7 64-bit as well... Don't remember doing anything special...

I am running Windows 7 Pro x64. No problems here.
You don't need to download kies. Just install these drivers;
http://download.cnet.com/20070905101545468-Samsung-Mobile-USB-Driver-exe/3000-18493_4-206977.html
I also installed it using 64 bit windows 7

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'll keep trying
That's a damn lie. I have a new 27" iMac with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit installed on it. I have successfully connected my Galaxy Note to the computer, every time.
There is a problem with how to get the computer to recognize your phone, that I never had with any of my HTC phones... With my HTC EVO's, all I had to do was connect my phone to a USB, and a bunch of options would automatically pop-up, asking me how I wanted to use my phone. I'd select the option to use my phone as a 'USB Storage Device,' and a few seconds later, my computer would automatically recognize my phone.
You can't seem to do it this way with Samsung phones. What you have to do, is:
MAKE SURE YOUR PHONE IS NOT ALREADY CONNECTED TO THE COMPUTER VIA USB!!! This is a must! Your computer will not recognize your phone if it's already connected BEFORE following the other steps.
Go to SETTINGS.
Select the first option (WIRELESS AND NETWORK).
Then you must select USB UTILITIES.
A screen saying "USB Mass Storage" will pop-up, and there will be a button you have to press stating, "CONNECT STORAGE TO PC."
Upon selecting "Connect Storage to PC," then and ONLY THEN, you will finally connect your phone to the USB.
If you follow these steps, after a few seconds, your computer will download any necessary drivers, and eventually it will recognize your phone. I am not sure why it's this difficult to do this on Samsung phones. Like I said, HTC phones are really simple. It doesn't matter when you connect the USB on HTC phones. Samsung, you can only connect it at a certain time. I hope this works for you.
I also run Windows 7 64 on my laptop, and have no problem with my Note. Odin, files transfers, Kies, everything works.
Steve
I used to use my old pen 4 desktop(one im typing from now) to do all my phone modding... When I bought my galaxy I thought that this machine was too sketchy and decided to use my win7 64bit xps laptop... Flawless.
Okay, so the samsung woman gave me the wrong information. Thanks Dr. Evo. I tryed your technique with no success. I haven't had any luck with anything. Could this possibly be a problem with my device? I'm considering a trip to the at&t store.
same here....
Funny... I'm now having the same issue on my laptop.... It connects fine to my 2k8 R2 x64 Server just fine. That one is an old and heavily upgraded Dell D9100 tower. I'm pretty sure I got it recognized on my ASUS U43J Bamboo laptop with Win7 Pro x64 when first got the phone. I've since reimaged and did a fresh install of the OS and drivers, and I'm certain that I reinstalled all the drivers and updates.
Tired the drivers built into KIES 2.0 - fail
Tried the USB_Driver_for_ATT_I717_Galaxy_Note_v1_3_2200_0 driver I used on my 2k8 server - fail
About to try some other drivers I found here. If something works, I'll report it...
***UPDATE***
Before trying any other drivers I decided to try one more thing...
With the phone connected via USB, shut the phone down, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on. On my laptop, PnP found three devices and installed the drivers when the phone powered on:
SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite Device
SGH-I717
SAMSUGN Mobile USB Modem
Kies 2.0 then saw the device... still sitting there saying "Connecting..." but at least I'm one step further...

I'm sorry my advice didn't help. I honestly have no idea what your issue could be. Are you still within your 30-day return window? If you were, I'd ask for a replacement phone, or if you bought your phone at an AT&T Store or BB, ask if anyone in the store has the ability to connect your phone to a laptop or computer in the store to see if they can get it to work.
For me it worked on 2 different Win 64 installs.
Here is what I did:
Install Kies. On the phone go to settings>apps>development and then check on USB debugging.
Phone connects perfectly. You can see the phone listed as a device in my computer. Clicking on it allows you to access both the USB storage and SD card.
To other poster saying you NEED to enable USB storage. You don't. It works in MTP mode.
Unplug all other usb hardware. Try another jack and cable. Don't use a hub. All virus and firewall software should be off. Log on to windows update with the phone plugged in and turned on. You might have to reboot and check again.
As stated in the title, my Windows 7 64-bit does not detect my SGS3 while in download mode. It does when I boot the phone and connect the USB cable. It also detects my wife's Galaxy S2 which I rooted some months ago. My SGS3 is not fully charged, only 15%. I have downloaded and installed the last USB drivers (1.5.40), but not Kies. Maybe I should wait until it is completely charged or it isn't necessary at all?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Well, I have done the following: I have connected the phone to another computer (a laptop), which has windows 7 32 bit but with an older version of the Samsung USB Drivers (1.4.103) and Odin detects the phone correctly. So It looks like using the 1.5.4.0 version of the drivers does not work. I'm going to uninstall the last version and reinstall the 1.4.103 version and see if it works. I'll post results here.
Solved!
It was a flawed usb cable!
It's not the stock usb cable that comes with the phone, it's a cable I had used for years with my older phone without problems.
When I tested the phone in the laptop, I used a different cable (the Samsung cable). That's the reason why it worked ok with the laptop.
Hi there,
I have the same problem. I am using the stock cable that came with the device. When I plug it into my laptop the phone detects that it is connected, however there is no response from my laptop. There is no device picked up in My Computer.
I'm sure this is just some n00b mistake I've made in some setting somewhere but I'll be damned if I can figure out what it is.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. (USB debugging is ticked).
Have you installed samsung kies to get the drivers for the sgs3?
I've just installed Samsung Kies this minute. The application is open however it seems to be stuck on the 'Connecting...' title screen...
Waiting.....
I've noticed that when I first plug it in, Windows searches for the drivers but is having trouble installing the SAMSUNG Mobile MTP Device.
[UPDATE]
... Just running device troubleshooter. Hopefully that will sort it out.
:s
[UPDATE, UPDATE]
Sorted it... Completely rebooted my laptop and then completely rebooted my phone. This time it installed the MTP Device successfully with no errors. Thanks for the help.
Hi guys!
I have a rooted international Galaxy S3 (i9300) phone with a custom rom: UltimaRom (version 8.x), and using XXELLA kernel (?) and XXELLA Modem version.
Since a while, I'm trying to manage the files in it (phone memory or sd card) from my computer, simply by using an USB cable (the one given with the phone or even other cables, it doesn't matter) and the standard MTP protocol, which is used by Google since Android 3.0. And, whatever I try to do, Windows doesn't seem to notice anything. In my device manager, nothing appears. Nothing either in the "My Computer" window, it just doesn't "exist". No reaction at all from Windows. The Phone's charging, but this is all it is.
And I have the same problem using another computer (like my own laptop, or my brother's one). All computers are running Windows 8 x64 Pro.
I tried to install, re install, delete, etc. all the phone drivers I have on this computer, tried to install Samsung Kies, tried some "mounting" apps on the Play Store, nothing's working.
What should I do to make it work?
Thanks a lot!
Might be stating the obvious but is your phone set at usb debugging? I have the same issue from time to time but when I unplug and plug back it fixes itself.
Hope you get your stuff fixed soon.

Yes, USB Debugging is enabled.

That's odd.. I use Ultima ROM and have updated to 8.1.1. I just checked just to make sure (my last update was done OTA) and yeah, computer recognized phone right away.. heard a little computer sound and everything. I am also running Windows 8
The base changed in v8. If you haven't done a fac reset since then you should try that.
Ok I just tried to make a factory reset, nothing changes...
Oh, and if that can help: when the phone's booting, Windows says "Unrecognized device". When it's booted up, it disapears.
Anyone ?
Drivers...
I used these drivers.
It worked for me...

Work for me too! THX
Thanks for your help !
Unfortunately it didn't work for me.... :/
Any other ideas ?
Sorry to keep rising this thread but this issue is really annoying... :/
Up
I still have the same problem. No other ideas please ?

Does Easy UMS work?
Can you connect via adb?
Does Odin recognize the phone?
If no to all of the above, try a different cable / port

Thank you for your response !
- Easy UMS doesn't seem to work, even if the app doesn't show any error on the phone
- How do I connect via ADB ? I tried to connect the phone while it is in Download Mode, nothing appears on Windows or Odin
- As I said, in Download Mode, Odin doesn't seems to recognize anything...
And of course, I already tried to change the cable, the USB port, or even the computer i'm connecting the phone to...
Thanks again for your help
Starting to sound like a damaged micro USB port on the phone possibly, or a driver's problem
Oh, and there's a thing: when I reboot the phone, while the Samsung logo appears on the screen with the short jingle, the PC makes 3 or 4 times a sound like something has been plugged, and showes a "Unrecognized device" warning window. When the boot is finished, and the rom is loaded, everything just disappears and no sound is any longer made by the PC.
Also, please note that when I connect the phone to the PC (using the same PC, cable and USB port of course), the phone charges up just like before, without any problem.
have you tried the old drivers?
search Google for " Samsung USB drivers 1.4.6.0 "
disconnect your computer from the internet
Install the drivers.
don't reconnect to the internet.
connect your phone and let windows find the drivers
Hi everyone, I've been having some serious problems with the usb connection of my samsung galaxy fame (GT-S6810L)
1) I intended to root the phone, but the adb console wouldnt recognise the phone
2) I intended to flash a new rom from odin and maybe root later ... but odin didnt recognise it neither
3) Finallly, I gave up and said to myself "**** it, im sticking with this rom, with my tablet i dont need gaming, so i dont need rooting ...". But when I went to load some music into the phone .... oh yes, the computer didnt recognise the mass usb storage system !
I tried with 3 different cables, all usb ports and A LOT of drivers (official and unnoficial) i found out there ... i also tried the generic ones i used to root my chinese tablet thorugh ADB, but no luck. I havent tried Kies because my pc is a piece of s$%& and it could possibly explode
I think the problem would be in the drivers, because i tried plugin in another phone (samsung galaxy Y pro, GT-B5510L) and the pc didnt recognise it as well
The worst of all is that when I plug the phone into my pc, it recognises that im pluging in something, but I cant work on it
This is what I get:
(i cant post the links of the pictures, but the hardware manager shows a new menu that goes "Android Phone" with a submenu that goes "Samsung Android Interface")
I NEED help, please ............. I might throw this piece of crap in any moment
Thanks in advance
PD: i have winXP 32bit

Did you select the option of USB Debugging mode enabled when connecting to ADB??
If you didn't, then try connecting by enabling that.
As you said no other samsung devices are connecting, then you surely install driver softwares.
Here's the link to the Samsung USB Driver: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956
If you have installed Samsung Kies, disable it first and then try to connect it in Odin or ADB!!
Press thanks if I have helped you.
Yes, i turned on USB debbuging (i rooted my tablet through ADB). I turned it back off when i tried to use mass storage, as well as double checked if the usb thetering was oof (it was)
Ive never installed kies because my pc is pretty crappy (not even 1gb ram)
Ill give that driver a try and let you know, thank you !
EDIT -------------
Those were the drivers !! I love you man !
