I finally managed to find the right fastboot file (I think) to get me back to stock on my Verizon RAZR Maxx. The RAZR utility wouldn't work, but RSD lite did...sort of. At the end of the program while the phone was rebooting it got hung in the boot loop. I returned to the menu using pwr/vol+- and selected normal boot, and I got through the boot screen. RSD was hung up so I just closed it. Now I'm trying to get root back using the RAZR utility and the ICS installer, and it keeps saying that the system can't find the file specified. I haven't read where anyone else has had this problem...am I missing something?
I read that you have to manually push files using terminal window.
http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/1598-how-to-guide-restore-root-after-installing-ics-leak/
Never mind dont think this explains your problem.
I had a similar problem. I got into a boot loop but was able to at least restart.
I installed voodoo and I think what I did is didnt install new super user and go from there. So I couldnt use the terminal commands. Not gonna start over at the moment.
Okay...just for giggles I used rsd lite to restore back to .748 2.3.5 instead of .173 2.3.6. Everything went very smooth, and I was able to use the phones update setting to update the firmware to .173 2.3.6 without a hitch. But still every time I try to use the razr utility to root it still says system cannot find path specified over n over again. I even downloaded root checker to make sure there were no remnants of root before reverting and all was good. I'm totally lost...please help.
have you tried using the "motofail" to root your 2.3.6?
Update your driver. Even if it is current still do it. That fixed my problem with using the utility.

Yup, that's more than likely the problem. I was having trouble at first and after installing the updated drivers (think the link is in the same post) everything worked perfectly.

I would like to thank everyone for their input and suggestions. I am finally running ICS on my RAZR Maxx!!! I went back and deleted the .rar files, re-extracted them using a different zip program, and the rest is history. I thought I would post my solution just in case it helps someone else down the road.

Hey guys. been following xda since HTC eris. i moved a little to quickly this time and now im stuck...
i will start from the beginning.
I purchased my phone not too long ago (last week) and immediately looked up the gingerbreak. went through the motions and seemed to acquire root (superuser.apk). i then tried using titanium backup. "no root privileges). not thinking, i received a ota notification. i then did it.
in result, i lost root (if i even had it), I've tried slow88lx from rootzwiki rooting program for 2.3.3, and RSD gives me a failure result "failed flashing process. failed flashing process. Unable to retrieve initialization values from INI file. (0x7029); phone connected" so i could sbf back to 2.2.2.
tried threads:[Q] Rooting Question, [Q] Dx2 Cant Root <similar problem, [SBF] Gingerbread SBF for MB870 Verizon Droid X2 [SBF], SBF TUTORIAL (Collection of instructions from various threads), Droid X2 OTA Gingerbread Root Guide <both one click and adb, UPDATED - [HOW-TO] SBF back to stock Froyo, Update to P3Droids Pre-Rooted GB Update, etc....
I am lost in limbo. phone works with all of its stock flaws. plz help.
Try redownloading all the files needed here again. Install and reboot both the phone and ur pc. If on Vista or Win7 right click RSD Lite and select "run as administrator" from the properties menu. If that still doesnt work report back with ur results please.
make sure you are using rsd 5.3. after you reinstall everything on your comp, connect the phone to a different usb port (sometimes that helps). make sure you put the phone in rsd mode. i would use the gingerbread sbf and the new one click root as well if i were you. and make sure you do a factory reset after you sbf.
Thx guys. RSD 5+ did the trick. Flashed to 2.3.3 and ota rooted.
Really appreciate the suggestions.

Thanks for letting us know you got it working!
The one click that droid-life posted for motorola devices worked without a hitch. I tried gingerbreak and had no luck either.
x2 was running stock 2.3, now running eclipse. liking it.
Hey, there seems to be a few of us(or maybe it's just me) confused about how we can root after the new update.
I just wanted to know if there was a confirmed safe way to restore root.
Thanks
Update:
Thanks to superkev. Manual way works. I can also confirm it also.
Also remember to keep your phone awake (ie. not in the locked screen)
superkev said:
I tried the manual instructions from here: http://briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-4g-root
Step 6 failed for me, possibly because I had used this method to root 2.3.4. The rest of it went perfectly. I think the 2.3.6 update changed the permissions of the su binary, so these instructions just reset that to what they're supposed to be. I am rooted again!

I can't seem to find any root information on bell atrix 2.3.6 either.
saw some unconfirmed reports that superoneclick worked, but it doesn't work for me just sits at "Failed to set prot mask"
and then "WaitforDevice" forever...
if anyone has legit root info for the bell atrix 2.3.6 posting it would be greatly appreciated.
All I want is to install it! But im in usa so I need someone to make a fruitcake of it for me. Oh and I have also read super one click is supposedly working for some.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
I've got super one click working but superuser keeps denying all my root permissions without giving me a prompt.
DANGER!
So I tried SuperOneClick 2.3.1 and got my Bell Atrix 2.3.6 rooted.... all seemed good and Root Checker told me I was rooted. Light Flow got Super User permission and I thought I was gold!
Then my phone started freezing up and rebooting. Now I can't use the phone because it is crashing every 30 seconds. I would say avoid SuperOneClick (at least this version) for now!!
Oh, and SuperOneClick won't unroot my device so I'm kind of stuck. I would rather not reset my device and have to reinstall all my apps (which are backed up with Titanium Back-up, but which of course needs root to work...).
I'm just trying GingerBreak to unroot so we'll see how that goes.....
---------- Post added at 02:51 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:44 AM ----------
... OK... so GingerBreak unrooted my phone but it is still completely hooped and the crashing woes continue... anyone with a solution on which system files I might be able to replace to fix this?!?!?
Aaaarrrg!
I tried wit Pete's first and it failed but super one click worked right from the first attempt. Before doing that though, I did a factory reset and started from scratch. Then I restored my apps only with TB. All is OK except that in market my apps list is empty with a message saying that my purchased apps will appear here. I have read that it is a known problem, but not necessarily with this update or because of rooting. In my experience super one click has otherwise been OK. Hope that helps. Don't have a solution for you except maybe trying to do a factory reset first if you are able to and then try again.

Hey thanks. Yes, I ended up having to do a reset from the boot menu (power+vol down) and do an 'Android Recovery' which apparently wipes the system files and reinstalls the OS. My TB backups are still sitting on the internal SD but I am hesitant to re-root so I can reinstall TB and restore... what build of SuperOneClick did you use?
I tried with SuperOneClick 2.3.1.0 (latest). It says that it worked, but even after rebooting, my apps are being denied root access.
UPDATE:
I tried the manual instructions from here: http://briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-4g-root
Step 6 failed for me, possibly because I had used this method to root 2.3.4. The rest of it went perfectly. I think the 2.3.6 update changed the permissions of the su binary, so these instructions just reset that to what they're supposed to be. I am rooted again!
I just updated to 2.3.6 and used the Briefmobile method to root and can also confirm that it is working. I had previously used this method to do 2.3.4 and had no issues on 2.3.6. Cheers
I might caution those who are not on AT&T about using the "manual" root method from BriefMobile. It was built with AT&T 2.3.4 files. Flashing the root.img in fastboot flashes those files to your /preinstall folder possibly hosing your Bell specific files. This has in the past, and possibly could in the future cause issues when trying to install future updates.
For those of you who have done it, can you look in /preinstall/md5 and see if you have att files?

superoneclick 2.3.1.0
this works flawlessly and on first attempt. so easy!
gingerbreak 1.2 didn't work this time, but it was useful to me for unrooting.
just make sure you do that before installing the update, and follow the superoneclick instructions.
too early to comment on battery life, and other than the keyboard I don't notice any aesthetic changes.

Remember to flash back the original preinstall image to avoid update issues.
Cheers!

That directory does contain some ATT and Cingular files. However, I used this method to root 2.3.4 and it didn't prevent me from installing the 2.3.6 update. I'm hoping I won't have any trouble going to ICS (fingers crossed that such a thing will even happen!)

Good deal. I had to help a few revert that folder when updating from 2.2.2 to 2.3.4 due to missing the gameloft stuff, but if it didn't effect your update that's good news.
Just in case, here's the 2.3.6 Bell stock preinstall.img to flash via moto-fastboot (thanks to NFHimself's new Gobstopper): http://www.megaupload.com/?d=C098P9IV

that's weird. you definitely don't need internet access to perform the root (i was offline), provided you have superoneclick and phone drivers installed i'd say. does the driver check feature complain about it too?
Yeah, i thought it was strange too. It doesn't give me that error with the driver check, only when it is going through the install process of the exe.
Sometimes you need to treat your phone like a computer when it starts acting weird, save yourself some hassle and just do a format/factory reset and start fresh.
i used Doomlord's Rooting Toolkit: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1319653 it worked in 30 sec
Link to the exact Superoneclick you used? I tried the Doomloader link but it's broken.
I have a Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx (XT912M - Verizon). I upgraded to the latest ICS through the system update and all was well. Then I rooted and installed Bootstrap Recovery with mattlgroff's Droid RAZR Utility 1.70 because I was looking to play with some ROMs. Unfortunately, they all said to use Safestrap instead of Bootstrap. So naturally, I looked up how to remove bootstrap, but I couldn't follow all the steps. I uninstalled the Bootstrap app, opened Root Explorer, looked for the /system/bin/hijack file to delete and couldn't find it, but I did delete /system/bin/logwrapper file and the /preinstall/recovery directory, but I also couldn't find /system/bin/logwrapper.bin file to rename it to logwrapper. Anyway, I figured maybe the app removed the other parts when I uninstalled it, so I rebooted and I've been unable to get back ever since. I've tied using mattlgroff's Droid RAZR Utility 1.7 to "Unbrick ICS 6.16.211" to no avail. For a while, I couldn't even get into System Recovery to charge the battery and I was getting a AP Fastboot recipe error, but with the help of something called Motofix, I was finally able to access System Recovery (and also to charge my battery), and clear that error. Anyway, I tried so many things, and nothing will flash correctly from RSD Lite, and I can't get any of the stock zips to install correctly from System Recovery. When I try to boot, it just goes black after the Motorola logo. What can I do? I'd be happy with Gingerbread at this point. I'm desperate to get my phone back. I'm probably missing all sorts of important calls and texts. Also, I have a trip to South America in a few days and I need my phone to be working before then. Help?

Funny that you suggest this file because it's exactly the one I ended up using before checking for a reply on this thread. Haha
If anyone else out there on Verizon RAZR MAXX (MOTXT912M) is stuck in a similar situation, you just need the correct firmware.

My girlfriend has her Photon stock rooted and locked but her OTA update continues to fail. Anyone know why?
It's probably because it's rooted.

Root shouldn't matter (at least it didn't used to). Has she deleted any system apps? The update looks for them, and if they're gone the update fails.

I had trouble with my Photon 4G and this latest update. I rooted mine using the One Click Root (OCR) method. I kept getting the "Software Update Failed" message for the 2.3.5 update. My wife's phone which is 100% factory updated just fine on the first try (go figure... :silly.
As you always see on here, PERFORM THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I do NOT take responsibility for any issues caused by following this process. It is sad that this even has to be stated on a forum for developers.
Here's what I did to get mine to update properly:
1) Perform a full contacts, application, and system backup using Titanium Backup (or use whatever backup you want) Just in case.
2) Download the latest version of RSD Lite you can find. This was one of the hardest steps as copies of it can be difficult to locate. Ask Google and ye shall receive... I actually found it using Bing, though. I would love to just go to Motorola and say "here's my money" for this, like I did with flashing/modding software back in the Razr V3 days.
3) Download the appropriate Motorola USB drivers I was able to locate End User Driver Installation 5.9.0 for 64bit. This is another ask Google, Bing ...
4) Use RSD Lite to reflash the exact same SBF you are currently using. I got the SBF from this post. This did NOT delete or reset any contacts, however it does require reauthentification to the network.
5) After your phone resets after the SBF has flashed successfully, attempt the "Update Motorola Software" action under Settings--> About phone--> System updates.
6) If you want to re-root, use the Photon Torpedo method. This is EASY and I should have just done it this way to begin with instead of being lazy and using OCR. OCR is nice, but would not do it again based on my experience with it. The simplest way isn't always the best.
I hope this helps.
I also heard the ota update doesn't like 198_7.
I am still waiting on updating, crossing fingers the devs break some serious ground.

Yeah. I still have mine, but I'm getting ready to retire it.
soon we will all know what moto did to razr for the last time ;p just be patient ;p
I didn't get an invite. No matter to me since there's likely nothing new [exciting] except possibly losing root. Not willing to risk it at this time anyhow.
No Invite either
Despite beign on the Motorola support group.
Regardless, now the RAZR is relegated to my wife. I am just too sick of waiting for nothing from MOTO.
The Devs here have done a great job, but I need the HDMI, and with "Noto" not releasing the code no one has been able to make an updated ROM with HDMI.
Happy with my new Sony xPeria ZL. (Never thought I would go to SONY, but I love the 5" HD screen, Great battery, Great camera)
Good luck with the RAZR's and the soak test. Please post your results/ findings. Maybe it will be worth commign back (but I doubt it)

Unfortunately, only new motos will be upgraded. Moto G is already receiving kit kat, despite being launched nearly 2 months ago

I did take the update last night and it did break my root. He's a quick summary:
1. Did a check for updates and was notified that 165 was available. I postponed.
2. Downloaded/installed Voodoo OTA Root Keeper. I backed up root but didn't temp remove it.
3. Uninstalled SS 3.65
4. Installed the 165 update, checked root and it was broken.
5. Tried reinstalling root with voodoo and it wouldn't take.
6. Used Matt's Utility to restore root and it took successfully - I don't know why but for me, Matt's utility only runs if it's unzipped to my C; drive (not my desktop) and I have to put my phone storage in MTP mode, not mass storage.
7. Matt's Utility restored root just fine but when I went ahead and tried reinstalling SS 3.65, I put my phone into a Moto Logo Boot Loop. :crying:
8. Thought I was done for - starting checking on the status of my warranty and insurance deductable but the forums helped dig me out of the mess by getting me to the AP Fastboot screen.
At the end of it I had to completely wipe and reinstall stock JB using Matt's Utility, re-installed the 165 update, re-rooted (again w/ Matt's Utility and NO issues doing so on top of the 165 update) re-installed all user apps, and finally re-installed SS 3.65 with NO issues on top of the 165 update. Haven't re-created a slot 1 and re-loaded CM 11 just yet but i don't expect there to be any issues going further.
In retrospect I think the Moto Logo Boot Loop was a function of something that got corrupted when trying to re-install SS 3.65 on top of it all, perhaps because I dodn't bother to wipe caches or even do a re-start between some of the major steps outlined above.
* I do recommend taking the time to wipe caches and reboot after uninstalling custom recoveries if you're heading down this path.
