[Q] Confused - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Basically, I finally got the ICS update on my S2.
I have been going through the forum but it's getting more and more confusing on where to start with rooting my S2. I just don't know where to look.
Basically, can anyone point out what I have to download for my phone? Here's the info:
Android version: 4.0.3
Baseband version: 19100XXLPS
Kernel version: 3.0.15-I9100XWLP7-CL340913 [email protected] #3
Build number: IML74K.XWLP7
I want to root it so I use the same firmware but just with root privileges.
Thank you.

Download the CF XWLP7 root kernel.
If that is hard to find out for you, no offense, but you might consider staying with stock.

Sorry but I am beginner! Everyone starts somewhere! Plus having so many links is very confusing..

Check out Chainfire's thread. Everything is explained there.

Cheers.

http://download.chainfire.eu/158/CF-Root/SGS2/CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.zip
Download that, flash it as the PDA in ODIN. Should take about ten seconds.

I have rooted my phone
What do you think I should now to install to improve my battery life?

install cyanogen mod 9

your stock kernel will not support you to make tweeks in voltage control applications, for that you need custom kernel whch allow you for that, but sum light applications are available in the market for power saver..like AnTuTu Battery Saver.

I've flashed HyDrOG3N-ICS along with the latest Siyah kernel and my battery life is a lot better than stock. If you're staying on a Samsung ROM, I'd try Speedmod. I had good results with that on GB but never tried it on ICS.

Thanks, But as u can see the kernel and baseband are different. Which kernel shd I use? And I don;t understand 95% of the article! lol. I am a super noob!! I appreciate if u can help me make sense of all these things.
KF1 Kernel a kernel is not a baseband .
Kernel is the bit between cpu and OS .Baseband is the modem for network/GPS .
As rooting voids your warranty you should understand what you are doing before carrying out the task .

Well, I have few rooted phones behind me, and honestly, I did not really understand the thread(which is supposed to be for noobs) either... I just picked up one of those Kernels(KF4) and flashed it, phone is working just fine, so I guess I picked up the correct one, however no idea whats the difference between them anyways

is this the file I shood use to root my phone.
Thanks Dansk
I happen to have a similar question!
I'm on 2.3.3/XWKF1 right now, if so, should I download CF-Root-SGS2_XW_OJV_KF1-v4.0-CWM4.zip?
But isn't it the KG1 that's gonna update me to 2.3.4?
This info to be exact...
PDA: I9100XWKF1
PHONE: I9100DXKF1

KG1 is just a kernel for andorid 2.3.4..and you need to upgrade rom to 2.3.4 as well.

Done
and thx again
This question maybe is very stupid, but i just want to get it clear....
This
"27-09-2011 XXKI3 Batista70 FoxHound Edition 2.0
-Based on the latest official firmware 2.3.5 WIPE
-Deodexed
-Zipalinged
- Abyss Kernel 1.6 By Angelom
• Adding CW Recovery 4.0.1.5
• ETC.........."
Means
That if I flash my phone with this Rom it will automatically change my kernel to the one described (abyss 1.6)?? and so, it will also change my CWM to the 4.0.1.5 version??"
Thx in advance

Not necessarily its just the kernel the chef recommends, but it may not work for you. I personally like speedmod. The battery life is superb with the rom your using.

Need Insecure Kernels for Orange UK

I want to root my s2 its on Kernel version BVKJ4 & Android Version 2.3.5. I dont no which one support this kernel
and i want to know if this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1095274 will support
I am new to rooting did read most info but scared abit
Thanks
You can root without the need to insecure kernel. The method is available in the root guide in the official firmware thread in the dev forum.
If you want to use an insecure kernel then you can use anyone of them, doesn't need to match your current firmware... just chose the latest one.
Thanks for the fast reply this mean i can use Lite'ning Rom v6.1 XXKH3 = http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1095274

Samsung Galaxy SII Rooting Help

Before I start, I just want to say I am completely new to the forums and this site in general, but look forward to being a part of the community. Cheers. :good:
Being a complete idiot at technology, I cannot seem to figure out how to root my Samsung Galaxy SII. The details of it are:
- Model Number: GT - I9100
- Android Version: 4.0.3 (ICS)
- Baseband Version: I9100DXLPA
- Kernel Version: [email protected] #3
- Build Number: IML74K.DXLPB
Can any kind soul provide this lonely fool on how to root his SGSII or a forum thread to how to? It seems that my baseband version is different and I cannot seem to find a root that works for it
Anyway, thanks in advance!
Hi,
Welcome to XDA.
You can learn how to root your SII running on ICS here.
Check this out.
One simple advice, read (or repeatedly reading) before asking any question. In xda, there are more than enough guides for rooting, probably more than my underwears.

Does both of this links work for my baseband version and kernel version? Is it universal?
FYI, the baseband have nothing to do with rooting, it is commonly known as the "Modem". You only need to pay attention to the firmware (aka ROM) and the kernel. Read the whole guide, understand the risk of not following instruction before you attempt to start anything.
Edit: Using CWM to root will not give you Yellow Triangle nor increase in binary counter, because it doesn't need you to flash an insecure kernel. (which is the method 1)
Use method 1 from 1st guide in my signature. You don't need CWM and it works for all ICS ROMs.

[Q] Assistance needed with first root of SG2 i9100

Hi guys. I have been a frequent visitor and learned alot about android and features. I am ready to root my galaxy s2 i9100
My details are :
Android version: 4.04
Model number gt-i9100
Baseband version: i9100XXLQ6
Kernal version: I9100xxlbq-cl911584
build number: IMM76D.XXLQB

I am not seeing the original kernal file up for download for my version. What else do I need for my root? Is there any advice such as best method and such. Thank you kindly everyone. Mods, if I posted in the wrong section, please move my thread to the correct location.
That's all you need mate. This kernel is declared safe by Chainfire but as any 4.0.4 kernel should not be used to wipe data because of possibility of emmc cap bug rendering your phone bricked. Root with this kernel but make sure to switch to custom safe one before attempting to wipe data.
Best of luck

Essentially flashing using a 4.04 firmware will brick the phone? or is it when I flash, it will be bad to flash using a 4.04 firmware? Sooo confused.
If anyone has the steps what I should do, please tell me. I am worried about bricking.
If I root the phone, when official JB comes out, will I be able to update?
any help guys? The thread isn't very clear what do I do if I have this kernal. Do I downgrade before rooting?
Insted of flashing that Cf root kernel with Odin or Cwm, flash Siyah 4.1.5.

I actually have the same HW version in my new SGS2 and I have checked with eMMC check (downloaded from Google Play) that my chip is safe from "brick bug"
Now the question is: which kernel to choose, CF or Siyah ? I'm planning to use CyanogenMod 10 on this phone, does kernel version matter at all in this case ?
/edit:
ROM will be either original CM10 or one of the variants (like HellyBean for example)

If GotBrickbug app by CF said your chip is safe than it shouldn't matter what kernel you use. Safe hardware.
Personally I always prefer rooting with CF kernels that match my FW version. Then if you're still unsure about the chip... flash siyah, go to advanced (while still in recovery) > reboot recovery. Then wipe data with siyah kernel just to be on the safe side. I always keep siyah 3.5.2 (the first transisiontl ics/jb kernel) for those purposes. CM10 built in kernels are all considered safe so that's the last time you'll ever be worried about it.
Best of luck, man
Thank you very much, I ran emmc check and I have a sane chip.
if I flash with the CF LBQ, what is my next step?

Samsung releases firmware in various regions and with varied carriers. So I bet that till it is officially released it will take time but when it does you will get OTA if your are on 'STOCK' ROM. but if you move away to custom rom then you will have to update manually.

To revert back assuming you didn't do backup before, download 4.0.4 firmware for your region on sammobile and flash it using odin.. Then to upgrade it when official update are up just hit OTA, kies, or flash it via odin the same way like you flash 4.0.4..
If you don't have idea how to flash then google it, theres plenty much tutorials out there.. hope it helps
Ohhhhhh. I get it. Flash using CF, or CM 10, use triangle app to remove warning triangle and if I need to unroot, flash with 4.04 (my region) using odin? Sound pretty simple. Am I missing any steps?

Actually I get confused myself hehe, by "Flash using CF, or CM 10" you mean flash what? The rest are ok..
Well, let's put this simple, Flash the CF-Root for your phone then you're rooted now, if you want to flash custom rom such as cm10 then flash it (the cm10 zip file to be flashed on recovery mode and don't forget to read the cm10 instruction before & after flashing), if you want to get rid of the triangle then do it with triangle away, finally to unroot and revert to stock, just flash stock firmware via odin..
Hi everyone! I just rooted my phone and it was sooo easy.
Thank you so much. Your advice and help definitely made it much easier than I though.
Yeah, welcome to the rooted world where you can explore more with your phone
